  • DPS has become the strongest role in Overwatch 2 with the removal of the Second Tank. However, a common sentiment is that the role can not carry games. This video will highlight the abstract concepts that shape our Overwatch 2 decision making that most DPS players will not get by just playing more, or clicking heads. If I did my job correctly, this video will guaranteed open your eyes onto the proper perspective of how to approach the game.

      @@sujo8880 What I said is exactly what the quote is for. If you have a terrible healer, then you have to adjust yourself and make the best of it. If you have a bad Moira, then it means you can't just go in blindly. You have to play more defensively now. Again, "Play with the team you have".

    • @Wulfereene
      @Wulfereene ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I like to compare it with poker. While royal flush is the best play, you often go for pairs or full house or other things instead. Because you don't do what is the general best, you look at your hand and make the best of what you have. In overwatch we have seen guides, gm players, league and whatever. And in your ranked game there usually is something that would be good or even best to do. But only if everyone follows that plan. But doing the right thing solo rather loses the fight. So you always need to look and adapt.
      That still doesn't mean we can win every match. If you are not a gm player in bronze, you won't carry so hard. But you tip the odds on Yue favor. If you manage 66% win rate, that's great and overall you will climb. So if you have that bad Moira or charging reinhard, maybe you cannot turn this one around. Your Fotos try things, at least you learn or train something. But if you have a dva that goes on dumb, well try either doing with her, at least multipy the chaos of the fight and the damage done. The enemy can focus one dva down, but not so easily a dive of 3. Or maybe you can flank. Pick off the supports while dva occupies everyone. If your can kill both supports in change for your dva, the rest of you 4 can win the remaining fight.
      My personal problem is, I play support. And it feels like I'm this rule you have the least opportunity to make your own plays. You can keep dumb teammates alive and hope they win their duel with your help. But it's not easy to make your own picks without losing more than you gain. Sure you can try to snipe as and, but you don't heal while you do. Same of you go in as a Lucio. Zen can do some damage, but is easy to counter by a dive or sniper. Support is also the role who needs to watch the crap their teammates do the most. As a tank you usually Frontline and don't see much what happens behind and on the side. You just wonder where everyone is when you die. As a dps, you might be on your own flank or duel. But the supports get to see all the orange outlines of their low health team as they scatter in different directions and get all kinds of walls in the way so you cannot heal them.

    i think the biggest mistake that alot of people are making is that they have the idea that your team is supposed to follow up on whatever you're doing, and that you're the one who's meant to make plays.
    whats better, 4 players having to be aware of what their dps is doing OR 1 player being aware of what the rest of their team is doing? Instead of trying to make your own openings, if you just play off of your team then you'll instantly find improvement

      I've felt much more in control of the game as a dps, as a tank I see myself as pushing my dps players' potential as high as possible. Sometimes it just happens they have none but that's the game, that's soloQ.
      Anyway, as tanks you should try to adapt to your dps sometimes too. I've felt adaptation was something that needs to be learned when too many times I feel like we gotta go forward, there's an opportunity, but dps are busy in the backline (for good or bad reasons)

    Honestly this video made me realize something. I recently started thinking "hey, i should just stay with team", behind rein shield for instance, since I started dying when trying to flank. • @zeph6182
      @zeph6182 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      It's very true. The problem isn't that you're flanking, it's that you're flanking without looking to accomplish something in particular, or just with bad timing, like engaging as soon as your team starts to back up.
      Flanking is also just hard, the minute you disappear to go flank the enemy team might use their cooldowns to take space from your teammates (as they are receiving 20% less pressure from your absence- or even 33% less if your supports aren't doing damage), and if that happens right as you engage they will have just enough space away from your team that they will all turn to focus you down quickly.
      I could watch A10's vids on this all day tbh, but the thing is that these concepts are so abstract in regular gameplay that it's hard to have them be an intuitive reflex. I think it's even harder to learn this just because dying on its own will never teach you it or even remind you of it.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice something for that improvement. You can be doing everything you can to win a game, but unfortunately, your teammates are lacking in brain cells and your forced to sacrifice the win for a loss. This is one of the reasons that I loved when OW1 had open queue as well as random heroes. It was different, interesting and fun when I would get in a situation like playing Reaper and facing an entire team of Widows, Hanzos, Soldiers, McCrees, etc and having to learn the hard way how to deal with those characters despite being at a disadvantage. Similarly was playing on a team with say no tanks or no supports, where you would (for no tanks) have to learn positioning and using cover effectively or (for no supports) learning where all the med-packs were. Obviously you wouldnt want to play with these kinds of teams in comp, but for practice they were fantastic, since you could learn things that would be far more difficult to learn otherwise that were SUPER handy when playing serious matches (like facing teams full of his counter-picks as Reaper, since obviously youd never actually face a team full of Widows and Hanzos in comp, but if you could learn to deal with them like that, then facing one or two of them in a comp match wouldnt seem nearly as intimidating).
      Forcing yourself to learn to deal with problems in non-ideal scenarios for your character and/or team comp REALLY helps with mastering a character specifically as well as the game in general. Its easy to learn/play a character when you are in an ideal scenario for them, but its MUCH harder to learn/play a character when in a position of weakness/vulnerability, especially if you never actually force yourself to deal with those situations and instead swap characters or something like that.

    Also make sure to ignore calls from your teammates that you are doing to much alone. I had this so many times where I played off angle or flanked as dps and got a lot of value out of it, but when it doesnt work out my team flames me for playing alone. I think most people are still used to the old 6v6 meta where you almost all the time had to move as one to win a match. I don't want to say that you never have to group but I feel like in OW2 the dps playstyle has definitely shifted due to the tank changes mentioned in the video.
    And it is obviously important that you train your capability to 1v1 or even 1v2 because you have to get used to dealing with the enemy alone if you go for these plays. You will lose a lot of duels in the beginning, but if you never go for it you will also never improve.

      Sounds like you were exactly the type of DPS that needed to listen to this. As a healer, it is incredibly annoying when the DPS both leave the team, get one "value" kill, then blame us when they die and we don't "take advantage" of their "opening". Sorry to say, but charging into the back lines and killing that Kiriko then dying yourself is actually BAD for your team. Hanging somewhere by your team, hidden or in the open, then waiting for your tank to make an opening so you can SAFELY kill the Kiriko is much better, and hell, you might even be able to get the other support too if the tank does a good enough job at keeping the heat off of you.
      "Make sure to ignore calls from your teammates that you are doing too much alone" crazy that this is real advice you're giving for a team based game. I think DPS players are really letting the lack of shields get to their heads, it's made you guys play this game like it's a death match. Again, if you want to flank people, do what the video said. Force them to make the choice to either face you or you're team, it will do a hell of a lot more than running in alone and getting a single kill

    • @Shobu55
      @Shobu55 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Miriam_J_ You interpet too much into my statement and make assumptions of which you can't know if they are true or not. Both sides have their right to exist. On the one hand you have to go for flanks or off angle plays, because otherwise you don't get ahead or get an advantage over the opponent, on the other hand you can also play with your own team towards certain areas. Each situation has to be considered individually.
      I tend to adjust my playstyle to the knowledge and actions of my opponents. If I see the opportunity to go for a 1v2, 1v2 or even 1v3 I will do it since it can give me a huge lead when I succeed.
      I can not stress enough that this game is a competitive shooter that needs you to improve and improving is only possible if you try to limit test and go for these duels.
      I started out as a Zarya only player in OW1 and hit T500 in Season 3 after that I decided to transition to dps and got shit on pretty hard due to the fact that my aim was garbage. After I invested time into aim practice and duel practice I climbed up to Masters and evetuelly GM aswell. I did this with multiple accounts (7) to learn different heroes.
      The important point in my statement regarding teammates is that you should not be too influenced by arguments that some random player says. Make your own mind.

    One thing that this highlights that I "default on" a lot is mistaking "I am a dps I am supposed to flank" with waiting for openings. Many times I flank and get punished. This video helped me realize i need to chill out and take a look at my team and evaluate whats going on. Is the space neutral for me to go in or am I about to int?
    thanks

    • @Real_Nutella
      @Real_Nutella ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well are you flanking and poking/doing DMG or are you just inting into the enemy backline, wasting your cooldowns and feeding? You don't need to flank and use your cooldowns unless your tank is forcing the enemy cooldowns. Remember that. With bad team mates, play reactively not proactively. With good teammates, play proactively and always look for those flanks if you know your supports will follow up with you

    • @sunny2523
      @sunny2523 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kiltacular280 it depends mostly. doing it with kiriko isn't a terrible idea, as if you have good aim you can assist with damage along with heal the flanker and tp if it's needed. there is also another support to heal the remaining people not flanking. but spreading your team that thin could easily result in a loss of the fight if it's not coordinated properly. just approach that strat at your own risk and make sure the entire team knows that your about to leave to assist the flank.

    • @dhamin8168
      @dhamin8168 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiltacular280 You can but you have to do it much more safe than a dps. You have to make sure you’re not as easy to punish and that you can get back to your team safely.
      For Kiriko a really good tip is to spam kunai from off angles and have ur tp available to get back safely. You can also flank if you can coordinate it with another member of ur team

    Don't know yet whether I'll commit to climbing in OW2, but I really appreciate you and everyone who make videos just like this for comp games. Fundamentals awareness as reference and starting points actually creates something to improve upon. Without awareness, it's difficult or sometimes impossible to gain important or necessary skills to compete, and the concepts here can be applied to so many games besides OW. I used to hate most fighting games, and I was a passionate but very mediocre Smash Bros. player. Once introduced to core fundamental concepts in Smash, I rapidly improved and suddenly became aware of specific things to look for in my game, even for more traditional FGs like Street Fighter and Guilty Gear, now some of my favorite games to compete or improve in.
    TL;DR: Very informative and useful. Thanks! Keep it up!

    imo the most crucial thing that people don't do (in my experience) is communicating with the voice chat, communicating is crucial because it helps your team understand what you're trying to do and letting them know the crucial things which can help win the fight

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed. I've seen so many players have good plans and plays in mind, but they fail in execution because they didn't communicate their intention to their team so they lack the proper follow-up - or they didn't realize they were heading in too quickly for others to keep up, etc. Good plans are best, when you're not the only one who knows about it.
      Played with my buddy yesterday, he was tank I was support. We were pushed back hard on Kings Row in streets and he was backed into an alleyway - while i was on the opposite side of the main street. I called for him to pass using his cooldowns, while I would cover him with heals. This clearly went against his plan he had in mind, but I didn't realize he was planning something because he didn't mention it until then - apparently he wanted to bait the enemy team into the alleyway and ult them, which would also have given me a free anti-nade from the opposite side into their backline. But lack of communication meant I tried to force him into a play he didn't want to commit to, and in that hesitation he got caught out of position and we lost the fight entirely. A single comment about that bait plan would likely have won that fight for us 3v5.
      And it's also equally on me, because he's a newer player and I should look out for his moves, his ult charge, ask him about his intentions more proactively, etc. All just goes to show, communication is truly undervalued and undercared for by a lot of players.

    • @_Mefu.
      @_Mefu. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MISTER SIR Yeah, most people forget that they're in a team and often forget that just their death alone can screw up a team fight (if you even have team fights). We aren't alone on the battlefield and taking on the whole enemy team is almost impossible.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@_Mefu. Yea unnecessary deaths from not playing with their team is probably the main cause for why silver and gold players don't rank up. Since OW2 I've been queueing ranked support with my friends (used to be diamond on all roles but I only really care for my dps rank). My friends are still kinda fresh to the game so when we queue ranked we play mostly in silver lobbies in OW2, and literally every single fight, one or more team members take fights and risks they don't have to. 9/10 times when someone dies, it was self caused death - not actually the enemy being better players. People going in 1-v-many and forgetting to look where the rest of their team is, overstaying their welcome when others fall back, etc etc. Overall awareness and discipline is just entirely absent.

      Since ow 2 I have dropped a few ranks to plat. What frustrates me the most as a support is that my tanks keep blaming heals while they forget their positioning. They can hide on team space but don’t think that supports will sacrifice their life for a impossible team fight.
