Memories of a 1994 visit to Australia. Flying with Ansett on the first leg of a Perth-Ayers Rock-Alice Springs-Cairns routing in the HS146. There were several families with younger children on board, and the pilot allowed them to visit the flight deck. He then invited others if they wished, and I went forward. The 146 had a giant-size windscreen for the pilots, and as I looked through and down, I could see Ayers Rock coming up over the horizon in front of us, still about 100 miles away.
Oh wow - that sounds amazing! My flight was originally routed via Uluru / Ayer’s Rock but was changed to go via Alice Springs instead. I do miss Ansett.
Thanks Jayden!☺️ I only found out about the mould issue at Darwin Qantas Club after watching your video or I would have mentioned that too. 😷 Yeah, the handshake was surprising. I’m guessing maybe the passenger was a pilot too or something. 🧐
Thanks - yeah, the scenery was stunning. 😍 The Red Centre is so beautiful. I definitely had mixed emotions about seeing those aircraft, on the one hand it’s sad as you say, on the other it’s incredible to see so many wide bodies from an array of international airlines parked in one place, particularly when that place is the middle of Australia. ✈️
This video came up in my recommendation, and I'm not disappointed. As an antipodephile (which might be a word I just made up...) I miss australia so much. I've subscribed and wish you the best
This is the first time I've watched one of your reviews as it came up, since i watch a lot of these trip reports. Very well done. I like the amount of detail and that you aren't cramming it all into a 5 minute video. You got me interested from the beginning so I didn't skip or move onto another video so keep doing these videos in your special way. I appreciate you breaking the video into its respective chapters. You get bonus points for the complete landing and take off views and especially the ground taxiing which many other trip reporters cut and edit heavily. As far as things I would say to improve upon when possible would be perhaps show the lounges in more detail, like what exact food and drink options there would be. As a foodie, I really love to see what choices the lounges offer - is it finger food or proper plated choices, what alcohol choices are there? I'd like to know all that. Also if there are food/drink menus onboard, to show those in detail so we can see the choices. You could take photos and then show each menu page for a few seconds so those of us that are interested can pause to read and others can just skip the few seconds. Great job overall and look forward to many more!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate you taking the time to provide such detailed feedback. Yes, making trip reports can be a bit of a juggling act because some people apprciate certain inclusions while others complain about them. Ha! Yes, will take note of more details in the lounge in the future. Unfortunately there's no printed menus on Australian domestic flights - the crew just tell you the options. :)
Oh right - yes, I think connecting domestic flights can have a connection time as short as 30 minutes (depending on the airport). But with a flight like this one (which wasn’t a connecting flight but the same flight, same aircraft, same crew), they need 45 minutes given the time it takes to deboard passengers (20 mins) / unload baggage and then board passengers (20 mins) / new baggage.
stopovers have been reasonably common on flights from the top end for some time now-I caught a darwin to adelaide flight in 2019(so pre-pandemic)which stopped at ayers rock
Great video and really well presented. Liked & subscribed. A few years ago I also did the Darwin - Alice Springs - Adelaide milk run but at that time on Virgin Australia (which they don't do anymore). Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing more of your videos!
Yes, it was great. I had friends in economy and they said they got a muesli bar as their meal - but otherwise they said it was fine. Also felt lucky on timing given NT closed the border temporarily after the recent outbreak here in SA.
Being a massive sports fan I fly around the country every 2-3 weeks for matches. But in this pandemic era where borders have been closed & flights cancelled, I am finding myself watching this with a sense of wonder & fascination. Is anyone finding themselves doing exactly the same thing? 🤨
So glad you enjoyed it ... even if it’s only because you can’t travel right now. Hopefully things will return to normal in the months ahead. Thank you.

Thanks so much Pete - really appreciate that. :) Yeah, I used to be a journalist so I try to incorporate things people might not know into my videos. Ha, yes, re the weather. I noticed many people are not wearing masks, are masks not mandatory in Australia? I live in Portugal and here you have to were them if your are in a public building at all time
Because there is almost no community transmission in Australia, face masks are not required in most Australian states. They are recommended when flying but not compulsory. 😷
So just so I have this right, if you "backtrack", you name the runway in use (ie that you're going to take off from), rather than the runway in the direction of taxi?
@@FromtheWindowSeat yeah that's correct..it used to confuse me. If you think of the word 'track' being the magnetic direction of travel, then the opposite of that track is the 'backtrack' (+ or - 180 degrees). So if you are backtracking runway 09, which is aligned about 090 degrees magnetic, then you are 'backtracking' or travelling 270 degrees magnetic during the taxi. If wind conditions allow, both runways can be used at uncontrolled airfields. Broadcasting you are backtracking a runway allows others pilots listening on the airfield frequency to understand what you are intending to do for your take off. It helps them build a mental picture of the situation at the airfield prior to arriving and if necessary make adjustments for the extra time the runway is occupied by the departing aircraft. Hope this helps?
Did you find the layover annoying or happy to see the extra scenery? I notice a lot of flights have stopovers at the moment, just need to make sure to read the particulars or you may cop an unwanted 25 hour layover somewhere!
Because I enjoy flying, for me it was a bonus. Two flights in one and only a 45 minute stopover. So wasn’t like I was hanging around waiting at all. Win-win. Ha.
I've been wanting to do this flight in business class for the longest time, but the closure of QFC in Darwin has stopped me from doing it. This is literally the only domestic flight with a stopover!

Interesting that other facilities are open in Darwin airport, wonder how the mould issue is isolated to just the Qantas lounge when it was caused by the Air Con being off all throughout the airport. 🤔 Enjoyed the review. 👍
I think a lot of the cost cutting is due to billion dollar losses during COVID. Really in Aus we are lucky that Qantas are more or less able to survive on their own as the government isn't going to bankroll the airline like other countries have...subsidising certain "important" routes is about as far as they seem willing to go, so sure cut back on some things is ok. Not sure how much dollars 12 free drinks saves per flight...test will be whether these cuts are removed once the bulk of pandemic is over? it has been interesting as I live in Weipa FNQ and at various times during Pandemic we have had more weekly flights to Cairns than some of the capital city pairs!
