It is sad seeing these planes being retired as they have such an elegance to them. I spent many hours on BA 747's flying between London Heathrow and Phoenix Arizona. It always felt so good being in them even if I was in economy class. One of the best times was flying out over Scotland (home) and heading outt over the Atlantic ocean and down below was St Kilda.

I have seen every 747 that graced Heathrow carrying the BOAC and all subsequent BAW liveries I have been watching them come and as new and old planes, and have always looked upon then as technical master pieces, wonders of '60'S engineering. Dunsfold is only 12 miles from my home, but being that close to the queen is no substitute for have her soar over us, earning her keep. Farewell my queen.

I saw the last KLM 747 take off from Toronto a few months ago. I never grew tired of seeing the 747's while working on the ramp at Pearson. The KLM and BA liveries are my all time favourites! The 747 was also the very first aircraft I ever flew on. This was back in 1986 - it was an Olympic airways flight from Toronto to Athens with a quick stop in Montreal. The most beautiful commercial aircraft ever produced in my opinion. Thank you for sharing this Sam!

“Do you think the plane’s gonna make it?”
Is that even a question? It’s the 747, it’s gone through so much. Of course it would be able to land for its final flight. The end of an era. Always sad when 747s retires. Especially now since it’s British Airways. Love the retro liveries, the Landor one is my favorite. So generous of them to let you tour. The skies won’t be the same without its Queen

From what I understand it was because they wanted to replace the safer 4 engine planes with more fuel efficient 2 engine planes. One benefit is supposed to be that the 2 engine planes are supposed to be able to fly longer without refueling so it should be possible to fly more places direct without a stopover. The reality is that I have not seen any routes that had a stopover change to a direct flight when they replace a 747 route with a 2 engine plane. I think the cost of fuel was probably the only reason.

Every multiple engine failure in airline history has had a common cause, this more engines would not have helped.

The first time when I saw a B747 in person while standing on the airport ground was a few years ago and I don't remember which airport it was, when it had passed by I was just in awe of the size and stood there till she passed by completely. It was a Luftansa B747. Unfortunately hadn't had the luck to fly in one.

I can still remember my first trip to Asia, an economy flight on the BA 747 Jumbo from Heathrow to HongKong KaiTak in summer 1994. The beautiful air hostess Jane or Janice Lau did a great job. Three weeks later, when I flew back to Europe, she was working in business class and I never saw her again. I had the pleasure of flying in the upper deck Business on the BA 747 in the BOAC livery on February 28, 2020 from Heathrow to O’Hare. We departed from the B Gates at Heathrow Terminal 5. It looks like it may have been one of the last remaining revenue flights of that aircraft due to the virus. It was my first, and only time flying in the upper deck of a 747 and I only wish I could have savored it more if would have known it was going to probably be the last time. Watching this final flight and shutdown brought a tear.

If it wasn’t for that trip, we would have never gotten on the 747. Can’t thank my brother enough for making that trip happen.
