Awesome to hear you also enjoyed a great time with them and the Machame Route, a true life changing experience. Not sure what you did next be we lay on the beach in Zanzibar for 3 days, well deserved at the time.
Just finished my trip of the machame route in 6 days. It was truly amazing and soo hard to push myself. I got food poisoning and bad altitude sickness but feel soo amazing for finishing
Are boots required, or would rugged trail shoes be ok?? I live in the USA, in Colorado, and hike a lot of the mountains around here, and that’s what I wear for all of those.
Rugged trail shoes would be fine, as far as trail hiking goes which I also do a lot of it's not difficult terrain, however it all depends on the time of year and conditions. The hardest and coldest day is the summit morning and you could be there when it is raining and possibly snowing - if so I would make sure you have waterproof boots versus low cut summer style shoes. That's just my opinion.
I’m trying to go in the last couple weeks of August. I would be bringing boots, just in case, and thicker socks, that I wear skiing usually. Use those for summit morning if it’s too cold for the shoes. The shoes are waterproof as well, I just love how comfortable they are.
@@matts_green thanks, it was amazing. Gerald was my guide as well, it was only me and one other person on the trip, so we had a much smaller crew than you did. The flights to get there were long for me. DEN-JFK-AMS-JRO on the way there, and JRO-DAR-AMS-CDG-ATL-DEN on the way back. Summit day for us started at 11:30pm, both of us made it, and we descended all the way to mweka camp afterwards, that was pushing my body beyond anything else I have ever done. I took off on the way back at 9:55 pm on a Saturday (local time), I wasn’t back home until midnight Sunday/Monday (local time in Denver). I walked in the door at midnight exactly, and was asleep by 12:15. Anyways, already looking at where I want to go next.
Hi Jeff, thanks for enjoying my video. I did the trip through G Adventures and this is the link to the tour: www.gadventures.com.au/trips/mt-kilimanjaro-trek-machame-8-day-route/DTM8/ - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them as an organisation and have done other adventure tours with them around the world.
hello Matt, did you have a packing list for the trip? And where could i find it? Were you carrying alot of that gear yourself? Great footage by the way.
strumminskull thanks for your kind words. I have another video here of what I packed - th-cam.com/video/k9OgpMNcnmA/w-d-xo.html I think what you take will depend on time of year. You can’t do any trip up Killi individually, since 2006 you have to be on an organised crew and part of that is the porters carrying your main gear. I just carried my day pack with me. And really you don’t use a lot of clothes. If you’re climbing soon, good luck. Have fun.
Matt: I just wanted to commend you on a great production. The fact that you have such great audio with your GoPro is a testament to good videography. I have watched a fair number of GoPro filmed productions and 99% have had crappy audio. Bravo! I do have questions on your preparations to climb Kili. Did you and your mates take any medications or supplements for altitude sickness? If yes, what was it? What other things did you do to help with pre-acclimation? Thanks, B.H.
Hey Bama, thanks for your comments, I think it is also a credit to the latest GoPro which is an amazing small piece of equipment. I was prepared with medication for malaria and attitude tablets however advised at the time by the crew leading the trek that nothing was necessary, your choice. Best thing on the mountain really is water in my opinion. Otherwise lots of walking, hiking as preparation for a few months leading up to the trip.
Thanks Matt for the feedback. I was looking to see if you had tried other more natural prep steps such as taking supplemental iron (for red blood cell growth) and Gingko (for headache prevention) before starting the climb. Best wishes and cheers! B.H.
Really enjoyed your video Matt! I’m going on the hike to Kili next week and also going to use GoPro for the first time! Do you have any tips for shooting the video and keeping the camera alive? Where do you mount the camera while hiking? I heard that in freezing temperatures the battery doesn’t last well. Thank you!
Hi Chenlu Zhou, have a great time, it will be an unforgettable experience. I always held my GoPro and used a Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod trying to keep my hand as still as possible whenever I filmed. I had 3 batteries in total and you should not have any problems with your batteries. The only time is when it may be a concern is on summit morning and when you reach "THE TOP". Just keep the batteries and camera warm and close to your body. When I filmed on the summit I filmed quickly as it was freezing!!! Best of luck.
Hi Joe, any thoughts on my video? I'm not sure where you live but I got the following boots, which I wore for a few months before the trip to wear them in and they were brilliant. They were from an Australian retailer: www.kathmandu.com.au/footwear/brand/oboz-footwear/oboz-bridger-men-s-bdry-boots.html

Gerald and his Dream Team! Just climbed the Machame with them 3 weeks ago, amazing experience with the best crew ever!

I continued onto a few safaris in the Serengeti area, then made my way over to Zimbabwe and South Africa, all with G of course =D
Nice video. Brings back memories. I did the same route in 2012. Pole Pole.
