Congratulations! Summiting Kili is a huge accomplishment and shouldn't be taken lightly! I summited back in 2015 at age 41. I was the very last hiker to summit. Just like you guys I did the Macheme Route in the middle of November. It only rained from Shira Camp to Lava Tower. After that we were above the clouds. While it was wet going during the raining season offers the advantage of very, very few crowds. There were only 16 hikers going from all the tour groups. During the high season I was told there can be as many as 300. I basically had the mountain to myself! If you can take the rain hiking in the raining season has it's own brand of allure. Something you won't get fighting in the crowds.

By far the best simply put how to prepare to trek kili video! I’ve been watching your kili series and was wondering and wondering if or when you would announce which tour company you went with. I was so pleasantly surprised that you went with KA! That company has been at the top of my list since I was 18!
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH for sharing your experience with us!
Hopefully I’ll get to summit in 2022 after I graduate college! Fingers crossed!

It's really amazing to see how many different ways there are to climb Kilimanjaro. I probably would take the same (or a similar) route you guys did with it having a higher success rate for reaching the summit. Thank you for the video! If I decide to take this on one day, at least I know what to expect and how much planning is required.

You’ve done a good job putting together this series of videos especially the prep and gear ones. I chose the Lemosho route in 2019 for exactly the reason you mentioned which was more time to acclimatize. I was 70 when I summited which I attributed to a dedicated training program, staying hydrated during the trek (4-5 liters of water and electrolytes) per day and using the pole, pole approach. I also used Diamox. It has side effects like numbing and tingling in the extremities and may upset some hikers stomachs. It also acts as a diuretic which means you will be up peeing a few times during the night. This leads to not sleeping well which of course contributes to fatigue as the days pass. I did keep a dedicated Nalgene pee bottle in the tent to avoid those midnight toilet trips. I also kept my spare batteries and camera in my sleeping bag to keep them from freezing. It was an incredible experience despite the crowds and the guides and porters are so amazing. I think because of your age you might be able to get by with less training but for those over 40/50 it’s so important to be really conditioned. I don’t think you want to underestimate the mental component of the trek. Fatigue and bad weather can really affect your mindset so being fit and hydrated really will help. Keep having adventures and stay safe in the crazy times😎

One thing I did when I climbed Kilimanjaro last year was climb Mount Meru a few days before. It is, in itself, an amazing hike and it helped a ton with acclimating to altitude. Also, I climbed via the Northern Circuit including a night at Crater Camp. Made for a short summit day and I would definitly recommand that if it's possible for you. While the Northern Circuit sees less vegetation, the type of vegetation we missed on Kilimanjaro we had seen on Meru.

very similar experiences when I did EBC trek in Nepal. I always stayed at the back as I'm just naturally slower and that's ok, I made it there. I also had some sugar drops (for diabetics specifically) for when I needed a boost even though I'm not a diabetic I lost my appetite and it helped me. I found it more of a mental struggle more than anything, but working on your cardio I found to be the biggest factor in helping me succeed. My thighs were like steel when I came down and I could breathe which felt wonderful. Go slow, book a good tour provider and have a strong desire to summit. Can't wait until I actually do Kili soon!

Loved this video! I was supposed to climb the mountain this summer but it was cancelled because of COVID-19 :(. I now moved it to next year and I will follow the Northern Circuit. I am already kind of nervous because I'm from the Netherlands which is a country that is possibly the flattest in the world and most points are below sea level. I do have some experience with hiking in the mountains of France, Spain and Italy but I am of course not used to height. I train like 2 or 3 times a week and then I will like row or cycle, so I think I'll be kind of fine with the cardio part, but the thought of climbing Kilimanjaro still makes me very nervous hahah. Long story short: I really loved this, and thank you so much for all the information (though I still have a year to prepare)

Question for the Q&A: Did you find the crowds took away from the experience at all? Or did you find that having other people around with a common goal (i.e. summiting) made the experience better? I'm an avid hiker and I like being alone on the trails, but I'm curious how this experience differs from a normal hike!

What a great series of videos…thank you. Wondering if you have heard about altitude tents, and how effective they are for pre-trip acclimatization? How many more of the 7 summits to go? Which 1 is next?
U could always also try for the 7 '2ed summits' (K2, Logan, Kenya, Tyree etc.), the 7 '3rd summits', the 7 highest volcanos, the list goes on, like the 14 peaks >8K metres.

Wow very nice video guys! My two cents. It seems I've been on summit two weeks after you and it was Much less crowded. We've also taken the Machame route based on time and statistics. Of our group of three we all taken Diamax and all summited with no major issues. We've opted our if renting gear, although you can come to Tanzania in t-shirt and shorts and rent all the equipment I and my friends prefer gear we know and can trust. Our biggest issue with all tours was that all touring agencies advice you to stay in Mochi, which is basically starting point for all tourist. We decided to stay in Arusha, which is 1-1,5 h drive farer than Mochi to Machame gate, but it an Actual big city with nice hotels, restaurants and much less crowded with clibers.

    • @heynadine

What gear were the porters actually carrying for you? It seems almost pampered at times, not you personally but videos I've seen before. I thought that Mount Kosciuszko was the easiest of all continents - it was like my daily training route (I am living in the Alpine area). o.k if Puncak Jaya was meant as the highest, then...right Kilimanjaro was the easiest, BUT the summit was very tricky, someone who had no experience mountaineering came to the top but the experienced alpinist couldn't - the catch was "just take it easy and slow...".

We had 2 cameras. Sony a6400 with a 10-18mm lens, and Sony a7III with 24-70mm. Our tour provider was Kandoo Adventures

Thanks for the video! Very helpful. Qq, when you say 7 days, it is out and back, right? Not only 7 days to the summit.

Hi Nadine! Thanks for the informative video. Can you talk about what it was like climbing Kilimanjaro and being vegan? Was your tour provider accommodating and were the meals substantial enough? Did you pack your own snacks? Fellow vegan here and I’m thinking about climbing Kilimanjaro! ☺️. Thanks!!!

How did the Apple Watch work on the mountain? Did you use it to track your hike? Battery life? Did you use the workout feature for hiking?

we used it, but it ended up dying on the summit night! and I had to charge it everynight! But I found it quite handy :)

Where do you do #1 and #2?
Behind the tree 😂, diapers, portable toilets?

Hey guys, you have a fan from Brazil here. Do you think the hiking is possible for someone who has patellar chondromalacia(knee condition)? And which route is less painfull for the knees?

I think one thing to note that's important is that, some people live at various altitudes, for example people whom live in Florida may have never seen a mountain in their life, will have a significantly harder time, opposed to Denver CO they live mile high, and have 14ers accessible to practice.

Hey Nadine, watching your videos gave me the courage to travel by myself a couple of years ago. Now I am considering Kilimanjaro. Just wondering if you encountered any older solo women on your Kilimanjaro trek? I am 54. Also, any reason why you went with the tour company you did as opposed to a Canadian tour company? I have looked at the KPAP website and not really sure how to choose a tour provider.

There was a 60 year old lady in our group who summited along with us! She is quite and active person and hikes regularly, but she didn't seem to have any problem keeping up with the group. We saw several other older people on the mountain. The hike isn't super demanding or technically difficult, it's a long, slow grind.
We chose our tour provider mainly because the dates they had available worked perfectly for our plans. They also were KPAP approved and they had very good reviews which made us feel like we were in good hands. I'd recommend checking the tour company reviews on Trip Advisor before making any decisions. Hope this helps, good luck!

@@mattofstie9298 Thanks for the speedy response. I am pretty active and run and hike so I am not so concerned about that, more so being a solo female traveller. Thanks also for the info on the tour company and will definitely check out reviews before booking anything. I don't know if tours are even taking place this year or next, due to covid 19 but this is a trip that has definitely sparked some interest.

what did the guides carry for you guys specifically? AND did you have to bring a tent, and did you guys bring poles? Finally: how to deal with rude pushy tourists (my mom was pushed in Bath, England and we told off the lady in front of a crowd and it was SO rewarding)

my daughter is making a 10 days trek and I am so worried for her. she does hike all the time but this is not your ordinary hike even for people who professionally hike. it's also VERY EXPENSIVE, I think so three of them are going. I want to tell her not to go but she is going anyways...as always..
