My plate has been a little full, but I was able to catch this documentary. A lot of nonsense happening globally. Needed something happy to share.

Loved the doc. Lionel Ritchie had to be dog tired. He hosted an awards show, performed, won awards, and then had to be the point man at the recording.
The Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder scene is a great example of how extroverts can help introverts come out of their shell, not through force, but gentle encouragement. Bob Dylan went from timid to smiling and hugging everyone.
I absolutely loved that scene, Dylan a total legend was feeling out of place and time but it seems he had a friendship with Stevie. He just openly in front of everyone asked" Stevie, can you play some for me?" Stevie went the extra mile to mimic his voice and give a guide for comfort. I also appreciate Quincy and Lionel telling him it was " " "perfect"when he finished...and it was just perfectly Dylan. The love in the room was real.
My favorite part of the film. They were so kind to him. 🥲
Speaking of introvert even MJ is a introvert 😂but when it comes performing.

This documentary was great to watch. I laughed throughout and cried when Bob Dylan asked Stevie Wonder to help him rehearse his part . Seeing artists collecting each others autographs, there were so many beautiful moments.
All of the artists did well especially given the circumstances. The imperfections made the song feel real. Watching the creative process unfold is magical.
Calvin you are so correct about music history being taught! I was born in '96 and I remember watching "I love the 70s/80s" "100 greatest music artists of all time" and "top 50 music video of the year" specials in vh1 and MTV. Also VH1 Soul would play older rnb/soul songs 24/7 and all these things filled in the gaps musically my parents could not.
My show was Pop-up Video. So many random facts - so many feels.
I was looking forward to your review. The Motown artists all had clear and powerful voices no matter their range. The Mowtown machine training and development gave them a level of professionalism you hardly see today.
James Ingram should have had more success than he did. His voice hits deep even now. So silky smooth. RIP
I was 20 years old when this song was released. I clearly remember when the song was played one day on all radio stations. All those artists coming together for one cause.
Just finished it and clicked your review SO FAST. The diligence of music artists back in those days was something else.
This was definitely our I Believe I Can Fly. We were singing We Are The World at every school program.😂 I loved the doc. The last month or so I had been watching the original video of the making of the song here on TH-cam. I didn’t even know Netflix was doing this one.
We definitely sang this song at every important school function. What a time that was❤

I liked this doc better than Thriller 40. The vocal arranger Tom Bahler deserves all the praise. Felt for Bob Dylan who was out of his depth. I wish they had interviewed Stevie and Diana Ross and any of the other Jacksons who were there and could speak to MJ’s perspective
It was produced by Richie and it added to the original "making of" documentary mainly.just his perspective.
Hey brother! You are absolutely right when you said we don’t consume music the same anymore, and tbh, we don’t consume content the same in general anymore-hence why there is so much of a disconnect across all of us as humans in this era.
It is a brilliant documentary. I laughed, I cried and laughed and cried some more.

Song was beautiful, favorite part of the documentary was them singing “DayO” in unison and harry belafonte just in the back cackling. The communion was pure. The biggest shame was that Bob Marley wasn’t alive to be apart of this. I truly think Bob and maybe a Prince guitar solo in addition to this masterpiece would’ve been absolutely godly.
Seriously Calvin, that was a room full of musical Giants!!! 🫅🏿🤴🏿🫅🏻🤴🏽 This song RULED the air waves when I was young!!! It stayed on heavy rotation morning noon and night on the radio and videos🤦🏾♀️ We sang this along with I Believe The Children are our Future (Whitney Houston) at all the 6 & 8th grade promotions🎉❤😊

I’m glad you talked about this! I watched last night! I’m just amazed at the totality of Michaels talent. Not only was he a great dancer and performer but also great vocalist, writer and producer! Him and Lionel came up with a great song for a great cause! Stevie had me cracking up😂 I didn’t realize he was such a jokester! When it got to the part where he was tryna get everyone to sing in Swahili I was like “respectfully Stevie no lol” IDK what cyndi lauper was doing but she could have sat this one out. Overall it was a great watch and too have that many stars come together at that time for a great cause! Legendary

You're so right about the records sounding so polished. I remember people laughing at Adele for cracking on her song To Be Loved from 2021’s 30. She recorded it in one take allegedly.
I watched it because of you. And I smiled from beginning to end. I loved every minute of it. I felt like it was so short.
Just watched this morning. I loved it. I was in tears throughout most of it. Just seeing all those artists in the same room and the behind the scenes stuff brought me joy. The tribute to Harry was so heartwarming. I’m not a fan of Lionel Ritchie but he did good as the coordinator. It’s amazing what you can pull off without access to the internet. See kids .. we managed!!

Loved it . I wish there were a multi episode sit down with all of those people. Like just their stories and history .. hilights and everything in between.
@CalvinMichaels I almost skipped this review cause I thought you were a bit too young to care deeply about this 80s project but you did a great job and I was proved wrong. Great documentary. I've always known the backstory to this project for many years. What's new for me in this documentary is hearing from the recording engineers, camera men, admin staff etc. interesting perspectives.
I love your enthusiasm for music and desire for knowledge... I'll definitely look for this documentary.
I LOVED the doc. I was 8 or 9 when WATW came out, and it was a whole event. This brought back great memories. The only thing that bothered me was when Sheila E accused Lionel & company of using her to get Prince to come. I remember her saying once before that Prince sent her as a representation of him because he wasn't coming due to them not letting him play a guitar solo & doing it how he wanted. I love Prince & Sheila, but it wasn't about them. It was about the cause, and I feel like they made it more about themselves. It was going to be a magical & historic night with or without them. SN: I was surprised with how much Bob Dylan struggled too. I'm not familiar with his music, but I know who he is. But Bob can't sing at all imo. I'm sorry, but that was horrible. Bless his heart 😊. It was a sweet moment though when he asked Stevie for help. Hearing Michael's raw vocals and witnessing him arranging his vocals while everyone else was at the AMAs was absolutely magical🥰. I miss him so much 😥❤
Yeah Bob was never known for his singing. 😅 more for his words. Interesting take on Sheila E and Prince. I didn't know that. I thought it was shady how it went down according to her in the documentary. But you are right. I guess she should've been satisfied just being in the chorus. 😅
Bob is celebrated as a great songwriter & not so much as a singer. In fact, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature a few years ago. He's the first musician or songwriter to ever achieve that honor. 👍🏽
I remember when this song came out. They played it to death on the radio. I remember one day I turned on the radio and WATW was literally on every radio station at the same time. I couldn't escape it unless I turned off the radio.
I enjoyed the documentary. It brought back a lot of memories. I was 11 years old at the time and obsessed with Michael Jackson. 😄 I remember watching a documentary around the time that the song was released so I didn't really learn anything new. However, this was a nice documentary.

For some reason, about 2/3 weeks ago, this song came across my mind & I played it multiple times over the span of about 5 days. And now I find out that there’s a documentary. Weird! I was about 6/7 when that song came out

Since *_"We Are The World",_* I also feel the closest we came to a newer-style super group was the 2008 Cancer Awareness song *_"Just Stand Up"._* I liked that song and felt the unity amongst the different artists. The only thing is that I don't feel it was really promoted as well.
Oh I loved it!!! The song came out 2 year after I was born ❤but I never knew they did my girl Sheila E like that it made me kind of sad to see that. The documentary was so good and brought back so many memories from that time
That's how she felt. I don't think that really happened exactly that way. Only because she's said something totally different before.
@LuvScorpio I think I believe her because if not I think they would have clarified during the doc but they didn't. At least she was on the song i would love to hear how it would have sounded if Sheila and Prince had a small solo.

I was interested in seeing this documentary cuz my memory of this is from the in living color skit of this song.
As 80s baby/90s kid I will always miss the VH1 behind the music shows. Music history is good to know cuz it’s wild how similar problems/issues always seem to happen for better or worst.
so glad to find a review by a young person on this, who actually KNOWS his stuff to actually review the material.
the only thing i wish had happened was that Whitney was "somebody" enough by that time to be invited to join...and definitely do a verse (or two).
truthfully, I couldn't imagine Prince doing that part for him that ended up being done by Huey Lewis. Huey just sounded so perfect...I couldn't imagine how Prince would've done it...although I wouldn't mind actually hearing it.
Other artists, whom I think were pretty significant at the time that didn't get an invite: EWF's Maurice White and Philip Bailey (who was at the AMAs), Kool & the Gang's JT Taylor and Robert Kool Bell (they were part of Band Aid), Dolly Parton, Chaka Khan and Peter Cetera.
oh, and I do wish that it was JANET..instead of LaToya joining the chorus that night.
It was a great watch. I laughed and cried at times. Only Quincy Jones could’ve pulled that production off. Prince should’ve been on that song but his ego wouldn’t let him smh
Great video/review of GNIP. I absolutely loved the documentary! I’ve actually watched it twice!! Couple of comments… I think those involved depended heavily on who they had for an agent. Most had the same one. Interesting… Also, important to note, the part sung by Huey Lewis was originally planned for Prince. When he was a No Show, they asked Huey to do it on the fly with no practice or prep. Talk about pressure! And yet, he nailed it & I can’t imagine that part of the song sung any differently! Again, great video. Thanks!!
I really enjoyed this documentary. I had to watch before watching the review. I am 31 and I don't know how I know this song but I do. Coincidentally about 2 weeks ago I had gotten a speaker as a late Christmas gift to go with my record player. One of the records I listened to to test it out was the We Are the World vinyl that my younger sister had given to me which she had gotten from our grandma. After watching the documentary and seeing the behind the scences I am more happy that I have it.
Sheila E. was right. They did use her to get to prince, but she should had known she was outclassed when she walked into the room. She was lucky to be in the room. They were nice to let her stay even though Prince did not cone

Loved this doc. Truly the best pop group ever. Also Dan Aykroyd as well. Reason being like I had to school my wife. Go watch The Blues Brothers him and John Belushi they sung their parts.

I loved everything about this documentary. Very impressed with Lionel Ritchie. I knew he wrote the song with MJ but forgot he hosted the AMA's that same night. Well done he by all! Sheila E should have been happy to be in the room. No way, was she getting a verse😆

I am a black female from the Caribbean and I was a child when WATW came out and I think the only artist I wasn't too familiar with was Bob Dillon. I have been a music junkie all my life and I just remember this song so fondly for what it was, I never loved it but it was a great project. I miss MJ so much...
I always find myself looking for Whitney's voice in one of these historic moments! I don't think she was quite on the scene as a major star yet but WOW I can imagine what they would have done with that inspirational voice in this song!
Calvin we all love Latoya , but Back on the day Arsenio Hall went hard on our girl. Back on his talk said he constantly made fun of her, saying who let Latoya in that line up. He said he wanted to grab her by that headband and drag her out of that line! Haha!

Ya know, What I like about you Calvin? You get RIGHT Into the content! None of the upsell crap that others do, but saying that...I enjoyed the documentary. I really found it funny that Stevie thought he was going to be writing, and it was already done lol. Anyway, I loved the heart that the artists brought to the project...EXCEPT Wayland Jennings. LOL
I would've run out of the house but later called Michael and cursed him out for letting that boa constrictor sneak up on me. #HISS lol Stevie should've shown up 3 weeks prior or mentioned the Swahili line during the demo recording. I'm glad Smokey spoke up. I always thought maybe Michael was having a diva moment in the video because he was featured alone. I didn't know he had arrived early to record his part while everyone else was at the AMAs. My bad, fave. lol I didn't remember that Lionel hosted that year but I did remember hating the fact that he kept saying outrageous throughout the show and I was fascinated by Shelia E. They turned the lights down low during her performance and all you saw were the drum sticks. Anyhoo...it was good to see Huey be so light hearted about his part because in the original documentary they showed a good 10 minutes of them messing up. I never paid attention to Bob Dylan's speaking voice until he spoke to Stevie with the clearest voice. Then he went on to sing all Bob Dylan-y They featured his part a little more in the original doc. too. lol I really hate that I don't keep up with other genres of music now. Even as a kid I could name multiple songs from almost all of the artists featured. The sheet music with all of their signatures should be in the Grammy museum.
Happy New Year Calvin🎉 So glad I didn’t get rid of my Netflix now, this is definitely a must watch for me. Although We Are The World was a much better song with my favourite artists, I would also be interested to see Bob Geldolf do a look back and behind the scenes for their Feed The World single too

Yes they played her but she still shouldn't have felt some kind of way because she knew she was only invited because she was close to Prince plus she was a newcomer at the time in a crowd of legends.

Saw this yesterday and loved it! Agree on all points you said. Ita different now because there's so much content to consume that appeals to different kinds of audiences that there are few outlets that can appeal to everyone. And the desire to perfect the artists' voice all the time is hindering artistry. Whays funny about tue Swahili thing tlis that it was scrapped for this version because Geldof thought it wouldn't attract those who can give nor does Ethiopia speak in Swahili. But there was some Haitian Creole in the Haiti relief version.
Also, y'all didn't catch the AMA categories? "Favorite BLACK MALE"?!!?😮 Y'all.

I agree with you -- music is not a collective experience, because music can be personalized to one's taste more now.
I feel bad for people who only listen to a specific music genre when music is universal and it's great to listen to music in different genres.
I realize Janet Jackson and James DeBarge had an estranged relationship with the Jackson’s, which is why Miss Jackson didn’t appear and LaToya did. I can’t understand however why El DeBarge wasn’t invited to participate.
The insights were very interesting. Wish young kids today understood these legends.

She was barely out at the time WATW was recorded. Her debut album hadn't even dropped yet; "You Give Good Love" was just starting to climb the charts.

I should watch this documentary🧐. I thought WATW would be like that 'Perfect Day' celebrity collaboration song. PD was alright but it had a disingenuous edge to it that bothered me, I couldn't get around it so I left the song alone. Haven't heard either song in yonks, like since I was in single digits🤨...
