- First let me say that this project was very well put together and presented. Kudos to the entire team and all those who played a role In creating this project.
So here’s my reaction to the new Netflix limited series “When They See us” centered on the events surrounding the Central Park Five. There is a spoiler or two however this is more so a conversation about the events surrounding the Central Park Five as opposed to a series review.
Two additional notes. When addressing “Antron” I kept calling him “Antoine”. That’s the name of an old childhood friend so I kept saying the wrong name.
Also I misgendered Korey’s sibling. Apologies for any confusion.
A very hard watch but so many layers to unfold and conversations to be had.

The craziest thing to me was how none of them knew each other. Yusef and Korey were the only ones who were friends. Who meets up with 5 strangers to rape someone? How does it happen?
Right! Apparently the innocence of black people is more unbelievable to these people than the ridiculous story they fed those children. I've only completed episode one [taking my time with this one], but watching Linda and the other detectives SEE how their story made no sense and that there's no way it happened the way they imagined, to see them then strategize on how to change the story instead of accepting the apparent truth of those kids innocence was rage inducing and just plain scary.
The Little Blerdmaid I’m still amazed at how they were convicted on absolutely NO evidence. None of the boys confessions even lined up together. This is a true miscarriage of justice and I’m still hurt by it.

Iris E I saw a comment on Twitter that said the boys were still guilty because they were at the scene of a crime. So does that mean everyone who was in Central Park (which spans over 843 acres) that night is guilty too? It’s insane what people will say to make something wrong right.

The political and economic system for black people
I'm wanting to know how or what can we do to change this system. Protesting, or voting ain't it.. I'm really sickened by how our people are being treated in a country our ancestors physically built.

I cried so badly because I couldn't bear to watch the whole documentary with my family is so heartbroken to me this lead detective of SUV should have been out doing her job correctly of she would have found the real rapist and killer she could have saved a lot of The Other Woman lives but she's just cured about media attention and being a big-time races and because of that five young boys lost a childhood and their freedom and Corey are headed to worst oh my God how could this happen
I felt the same way. I am so angry I want to torture the folks who did it to them. The day my husband back down to a white man is the day I will kill his ass myself. I am soooooo tired of racism. Even though Korey is older than mr, I just want to coddle him.
It’s also worth noting that Matias Reyes (the real rapist/murderer) went on to assault several more people and even kill someone as a result of those boys being scapegoated. 🤦🏾♀️ Smh.
Matias Reyes committed many additional crimes, but the CP5 did rob, assault numerous people and they did rape the jogger. Much of the DNA evidence was inconclusive. A semen soaked sock matched Reyes, doesn't mean the CP5 are innocent. They confessed to what they did and told the cops things the cops didn't know at the time. Guilty.

That bothered me also! That DA knew they could not have done that and sat back and watched them create suspects...the evidence didn't even make sense to her but she never fought for them

@@deshanaewilliams2464 no, I am familar with the case though. Patrol cops arrested the boys for robberies and assaults around the park. One of the boys told them he didn't kill her. Another said he just got laid. Passerby finds the jogger and then the boys makes written and video confessions with parents present. Guilty!

Period!! Children at that...none of them handled the situation like it could be their own child! Only the officer in prison who looked out for Korey thought of him as if it could be his son going through it. Smh 💔

I watched all 4 episodes Saturday. I cried off & on in episodes 2& 3, but episode 4 broke me down. I remember when this happened, and now I’m a mother of 2 teenage sons and the thought of this happening to them is unbearable. I pray for peace for all of those men.

Yaa Malima No, my sons didn’t watch with me, my 15 yr old daughter did though. I told my sons to watch it. They’re 18 & 20, but they naively think that it couldn’t happen to them. I listen to a podcast called Wrongful Convictions, so I know this happens more often than not.

1sotrue I wouldn’t recommend you watch it if you’re going away on vacation. It will totally mess up your mood. But if you will be local during your vacation then watch it but you will need to take breaks in between because it is a lot to take in all at once. 😥
The woman Felicity Huffman played needs to sit in prison, she irritated me so much. I was so upset watching it, I nearly cried 😢😭. I loved the portrayal of Korey and Kevin 💕🙏🏾

Thank you for reviewing. I personally am not strong enough to watch these type of series (When They See Us.) My heart almost broke in half with khalif Browder story. I knew personally.2 black teenage boys 14 and 16 got falsely accused in 1986 and.sent to Riker's Island. They never came back the same. They were a walking shell of themselves. One got on crack after Rikers.. Twenty years later When I found out I was pregnant with twins black boys I moved from NYC and bought a house in SC that has an excellent school system. In fact it is rated #1. I put my boys in karate since the age of 5. One of them has a black belt. They are now 17 and one has a full ride scholarship to 4 year college. Since the age of 8 I talked to them about police and the law system. At the age of 12 I had them research and study SC law and made them learn their rights as an American and then I made them research cases with black boys to teach them their real rights and experience as a black boy in America. When my 2 friends came home from Rikers, you can tell they went through hell and their story got stuck in my head and soul when I was pregnant so I made it my mission to prepare and educate my boys so at least they have a chance in this world. So I love to give them boys ( my 2 friends), Trayvon M, and Khalief B a shout out and your lives were not in vain your lives made a difference and a positive change in our future young men.
Please watch and watch with children to see how they view this experience with what they see in their every day lives.
If you have children, you can't afford not to see it.

Linda Fairstein became a popular mystery writer based on her experiences which makes sense since had experience making up s**t. She won an award for her writing but it was rescinded after protests over her involvement in the Central Park Five case. So basically she's lived a pleasant existence since then.

I feel like the settlement wasn't full justice, the corrupt individuals in the justice system were never charged, they broke more laws than the boys did...and there is actual proof they did...they should each individually be held responsible..this goes beyond malpractice, or negligence...should be tried as criminal...

You may not be able to have the conviction expunged. Even if you do have it expunged, there may be certain exceptions where certain individuals may still be able to access this information. Therefore, your decision can foreseeably follow you around for the rest of your life."

I watched the whole series last night and it's so sad what happened to those five boys. The Justice system is really messed up. Those dirty cops, Elizabeth and the other lady all need to be in jail for what they did to those boys. Tangerine (Trump) needs to be held accountable for what he did. Good Video.

I'm so glad you spoke on Antron's father and how he, essentially, failed his son. That part probably pissed me off the most. Antron was in a picture perfect position. He had his parents there to protect him from the beginning and instead of asking for an attorney from the jump his dad allowed those men to berate that kid all because he feared losing his job (according to the series). That really got to me man.

This mini series... whew! I will say I loved the component that Jharrel Jerome played Korey Wise from boyhood to adulthood. They were all BOYS when they were sentenced and that part of them needed validation and protection. We can't look at it as "lost". It must be recaptured and preserved so we remember this can't keep happening. This movie highlighted that so much for me. I had so many tears, emotions, and questions with this movie.
I knew the facts of story but this definitely stirred up something different in me in a different way. I was literally screaming at the TV when the prosecutor brought to light that Korey had been truant for so long and THEN wants to make him read and is SHOCKED when he can't read that damn forced signed confession. The city needs to pay so much more than the settlement that they did, and a portion of it should come via that incumbent jester in the white house...

@@luvburden5743 l understand how you feel. While it was difficult to watch, l think it should be required viewing. Those boys didn't have the choice to opt out of their situation. The feelings that l experienced pale in comparison to what they had to endure, so l almost felt like it was my duty to to power through the rage, pain, overwhelming sadness, etc. Without a doubt a miscarriage of justice. The system failed them and l wanted to see just how that unfolded and all the players involved. I'm just so happy that despite the hell they went through they are all incredible, resilient, beautiful kings!! Do what is best for you, but l think you should at least attempt to get through it. It really is a masterpiece. Ava did that!!!!
Definitely worth the watch! In parts and maybe do something lighthearted afterwards. I watched into the spiderverse with the kid to get out of my feelings.

I am the same way....I watched the 1st 2 episodes and I was depressed for over a week...like just felt overwhelmingly angry...I still haven't finished it and I really don't think I can...
You never fully understand how corrupted the system is until you watch this series. After watching all the episodes I was angry that these kids lost their childhood because the police saw an easy target. No amount of money could ever heal the trauma they dealt with and the time they lost.

The $41 million settlement was divided among all of them, Korey Wise got the largest amount but it was also divided among the attorneys, so each of them got even less than we would assume.
This is the best review I have seen so far. Thank you so sharing and being so honest. I absolutely agree with everything that you said.
I saw the documentary twice and really enjoyed the humanizing aspect of all the characters. Kevin and his trombone and sisters, Korey and his beautiful relationships with others, Raymond and his struggle to find work but still found an amazing, positive, lovely relationship. I can go on and on.
I will continue to educate myself and do whatever I can to be a safe space for POC.

I was 25 and I can remember the fear back then. It bought back vivid memories. The news was saturated with this story. An Inveesment Banker rapes by a pack of animals. The media fed the horrible narrative. The series is a must see but heart wrenching. Blessings to all of them especially Korey Wise.

Felicity was fantastic in this series. She gave us the true Farstein. Look, Felicity admitted to her guilt and wrong doing with paying money to help her daughter get into college. On the other hand aunt Becky is still claiming her innocence. Farstein got the ball rolling to convict the 5 young boys and Felicity played that Evil witch(I can't even call her a woman) who is a racist along with the cops. I have no problems with Felicity.

I tried to mentally prepare myself for the last few weeks. Watched all 4 parts & have been encouraging everyone to experience it. Every single person who played a role in the trauma those children experienced will pay; maybe not in this life; but Hell is real.
What’s even more sickening is in the ‘confession’ tapes Lederer keeps on asking “did the police give you sth to drink”, “did the police give you sth to eat”, “are you feeling well” clearly putting the soda cans in frame to pretend like they’ve been oh so good to the boys while in reality moments before they were physically and mentally abused and coerced into confessing something they didn’t do

When you watch interviews of these men it's heartbreaking. Korey Wise has been destroyed. His PTSD is so bad he has a hard time answering questions and staying on topic. I hope he has a therapist. I just want to hug him and say, I'm so sorry for you pain.
I couldn't even watch your video to the end, when you started talking about Cory I couldn't take anymore so there's no way I could watch the Netflix series. I'm a black South African woman but seeing the manner in which the American "justice system" handles black boys and men my heart breaks. Being black in this world is such a unifying experience. I feel as though whenever black people encounter each other in a white world there's a nod. I may not know you, but I get it.

It's been 5 days since I watched it. Man, I'm still spiritually shook from it. Devaney and the actors/actresses did a phenomenal job.
The $41 million settlement was shockingly inadequate. It should have been 41 m to each man, not split 5 ways. The men had to pay their attorneys out of that settlement; why didn't the City pay the lawyers? For that matter, why did the lawyers charge - this should have been pro bono. Unbelievable. On top of improved settlements, each child and grandchild should have full tuition to college and a professional school. I would want to leave the US ! There is less racism in Europe, or at least a different kind. I was a student in NYC at this time and it was madness. Cyrus Vance still maintains that there was no wrongdoing. Disgusting.
I was a teenager when this happened, I remember it well. This was really my eye opening to how Black males are treated in the judicial system. I remember crying when they were convicted. Parents of young Black and minority children should sit down with their kids and watch this.

Ava does not disappoint when it came to capturing the souls and character of those 5 Kings. I cried at each of their stories before they came home. I felt sooooo bad, broken hearted that they had missed their teen years and adolescent years. 😢I was so proud of King Corey Wise, he never let the system control him into lying💞💪👏🙌💞
I had to mentally prepare myself to watch this today because I knew I would be mad and crying in the first five minutes. This was such a powerful series and thank to Ava for putting it out. The amount of non POC who watched it and reacted to it has so many of them waking up to an never ending problem in the justice system
Thank you for your break down of this documentary Calvin. I always enjoy your thoughts and comments. I watched the 20/20 version and I'm still numb, angry and disgusted with that entire NY system. I Dont need to view anymore versions of it. Like you, Cory also broke my heart, watching him being mentally abused without any empathy for his mental capacity. For those police officers to admit they were wrong, would also mean admitting they lied and coerced those boys and that will NEVER happen.

Please watch, it's a must! This was the first time I paid attention to it because I was a little younger than these guys. I may have heard of them when it happened but didn't pay attention to their cases. And when they were released, it still didn't catch my attention like their actual story presented today. This situation definitely had my attention today cause I'm a lot older and have seen a few situations as I grew up and I fully overstood their emotions and how we as a people get treated past and present. You don't want to miss their story being told how they need it told💞
Rousse Bidon I think you should watch and definitely give yourself a break between the episodes because of the emotional impact. I was 21 yrs old when this happened and only knew what was communicated in the media back then. This film provided an opportunity for the story to be told by these young men and their stories should never be forgotten.
Take a break every few minutes.

The recent Howard Beach Jogger case is another case I feel is eerily similar to the Central Park 5 case...I believe Chanel Lewis(the man sentenced to life in prison recently) got railroaded & taken advantage of bkuz of his disability just like Korey Wise💯👌
