The musicality was BEAUTIFUL. I love that he opened up Vegas style and ended reminding us he’s very Atlanta. The out fit change was dope. The decoys were so well done.

Calvin, I noticed that the White viewers were disappointed that Justin Beiber or Taylor Swift was not part of the show. Usher made it clear that he wanted to emphasize Black artists and culture, yet people needed White features or hip-hop. It's R & B people deal with it.

YES! 💙💙💙 The Jackson State Band was Awesome! I told my hubby that's Jackson State. I know the Sonic Boom of the South, when I hear it. He replied, that's probably an Atlanta band. 😳 I said, what, who? Nobody tops Jackson State. I said, you're from South Mississippi, sir! Stop it! He has always claimed to be a musician but I've never hear him play.
Well, he played for Ole Miss back in the day, so that's that.🤦🏽‍♀️
When I married this Sippi man, I told him I had never seen Jackson State's Band perform. He surprised me and took me to the Jackson/Alcorn game. L'awd, Jackson State shut it down. Alcorn, though quite decent, ought not have tried it against Jackson State on Homecoming Day. 😂🤣 💙💙💙

Why do people keep saying this? It’s not a flex bc the truth is audiences actually prefer the sound of pre-recorded vocals more. They don’t prefer the huffing and puffing 😅 people were complaining about the sound because it _was_ live.

When all the athletes are on PEDs, you as a natural athlete look like you don’t perform as well bc you’re not using enhancements. That’s where we’re at now. A mix of live and pre-record is superior, The pre-record keeps the voice front and centre of the mix at all times, the sound dynamics are just better, especially with so much dancing. I loved the halftime performance and I think it's because I'm part of a generation that grew up watching music videos with choreography. So watching Usher do the shoulder roll or the tick made me as happy as listening to him sing and seeing the guest acts. That being said, the more I watch the halftime show the more I appreciate the intricacies of the performance. There was so much going on that another video of the show from different angles would prove to be just as entertaining. Usher is one of the last showmen, if not the last one for a while so I hope everyone gives him his flowers when he can appreciate it.

I think folks today are far too analytical about EVERYTHING. Good music is just that. I thought it was a good show. Some WF don't like it because they weren't in it and it wasn't a more pop star like Rhianna or others whose songs are more in their wheel house. Some younger folks didn't like it because they've been groomed on autotune and theatrics and not real performances. Those who enjoy R&B liked it. Usher is a little past my era but he is still R & B and his mike was on. I loved the band, but that's because I'm a JSU Sonic Boom fan. It was great seeing them there and I appreciate that Usher unabashedly celebrated Black culture. And, you can tell some folks never slow danced because they seem to believe a man touching a woman or holding her means more than it does. *lol*

I don’t think this needed a bigger production but it’s the super bowl so people are gonna expect it ig. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t epic or large tho, you don’t need things flying everywhere or a million set pieces to have good cinematography. I liked that Usher’s show striked a good balance between production and performance, I think the best shows always have that mix (MJ and Prince come to mind). Overall, definitely the best show this decade so far and probably ranks in my top 10 all time as well. We gotta remember, the halftime show as we know it only existed for like 30 years and a good 8 straight of those (excluding prince) were boring af after the Janet/JT incident.

Unless you are absolutely clueless about Usher I find to very hard to believe that people had actual complaints about this performance. Like you said, less is sometimes more. I thought he killed it with what he had. Then again, I'm from Atlanta, so I was appreciating the cultural references. Skating is to Atlanta culture what square dancing is to Texas culture. Seeing that at the halftime alone made it mean so much more.

@@r.johnson1170 I was kinda surprised people weren’t talking about the skating segment more, like that is madly impressive!! I feel like if he had done this show 10 years ago it would’ve been received a lot better, whether that’s indicative of our standards rising or being lowered over the past decade is up to you lol. I’d say, at least when it comes to the super bowl, we’ve started to expect spectacle to carry the performance more than the artist themselves, not necessarily my vibe but it is what it is. Then again, it’s not like this performance was panned. A lot of people recognized it for what it was, which is outstanding.

    Great analyses, bro.
Usher is the best singer/dancer of his generation male or female. He has the unique ability to execute intricate dance sequences while simultaneously executing challenging vocal sequences LIVE (No pre-recorded lead tracks, lip sync, auto-tunes, AI etc.) which makes his half-time performance more impressive and one of the greatest of all time due to the degree of difficulty & quality. When you put performance over preference and combine the level of difficulty with quality, Usher's half-time performance in my opinion surpasses his predecessors including Dr. Dre, Bruno Mars, Beyoncé, Rihanna's etc.
For years, Usher has been the only mainstream singer/dancer that has TRULY committed to singing & dancing LIVE. His performance was physically the most impressive half-time performances I've ever seen. Despite how physical his performance was in nature, his breath-control & vocal stability was extraordinary. Usher is EXTREMELY underappreciated for an artist of his level. Those who dare criticize his performance typically harbor bias and are profoundly ignorant.

it down a bit to forced on the other things going on around.

This may be an unpopular opinion but for performances like the Superbowl I don't mind and at times prefer prerecords or a mix btwn live and prerecords. Especially if you're going to put so much emphasis on dancing. Either cut the dancing down so you can sing and breathe better or dance full out using prerecords.
That said, Usher had a fun performance, I sang along the whole time and he's gotten a nice boost to his back catalog and I'm happy to see it.

You made a lot of valid points @Calvin Michaels. Although I didn't love everything about the performance, Usher still put on a great show. Thankfully, Apple Music fixed all the audio issues so one can't hear any inconsistencies (even in Alicia Keys' vocals lol). Regarding the playlist, an entertainer who did it right is Madonna. The main reason I mentioned her is because she has 30+ years of international hit songs. However, during her Superbowl performance, she only selected a few songs and didn't cram everything together. Everything blended well and the guest performers had the right spotlight as well (Nicki Minaj, MIA, CEELO GREEN). And I almost forgot the choir at the end of the show.
Once again, people are entitled to their opinion. At last year's Halftime show, the only thing that stood out for me was the playlist and Rihanna's dancers. I couldn't care less about her performance or the production. On a positive note, I'm glad Usher is trending on social media again. Unfortunately, the entertainment industry is very ageist and fickle. Nevertheless, Usher has proven his relevancy with the success of his Las Vegas Residency and in demand tour tickets.

    (After watching it back today)
▪︎ I personally feel Usher should have stayed elevated, only touching the field to go up the stairs for "Superstar".
▪︎ The show would have been more "polished" starting at the 2min 30sec mark.
▪︎ Some of the elements of the first 2mins should have been spread out.
    For example:
▪︎ I would have loved if the Vegas cabaret section had single camera focuses.
▪︎ There were people on Stilts!!! My way should have had more "shine".
▪︎ Rigth before he introduced A.Keys. Where were the dancers (there were only 2-3 in addition to Usher)?

The set design and the set list needed to be reconsidered. Alicia was sour as usual. Lil Jon’s song was unnecessary. If Beyoncé can do the Super Bowl twice, so can Usher lol. The fact that people forgot he’s already been on that stage is proof him and Beyoncé are not the same league
