Why is my slice only with my longer clubs? My slice begins to appear around the 5 iron and gets worse the longer the club. I slice it very consistently 50 yards overall my swing per club is very consistent driver is 200 yards forward 50 right and 9 iron is always straight and 110 yards. First ever you tube comment but felt the need to after just getting back from 18 holes and trying this on the range before. Slice has gone completely has given me a drive of 250 to 280 dead straight.( not including the one when the 2 woman behind watched me shank one completly) game changer for me. Thank you.

16 handicapper here and last year I was shooting in the high 80’s/low 90’s. Went to Belek in March and implemented some of your techniques. Since our club reopened I’m now shooting 80-83, with some massive room for improvement. Thanks to your guides. Absolutely the best coach out there. The guide you posted in about January/February about the wear in the glove of your palm and the weak grip, it actually felt like you were speaking directly to me! Amazing and thank you.
I used to play alot of golf in my youth, and was hitting the worst slices you could possible imagine. I took lessons and trained like a mad man to try to solve the problem but without any result. It got so bad that i actually stopped playing. That was 13 years ago! I saw your 4 other videos on how to fix the slice and decided to try it out on my farm. It went straight as a bullet, took my old clubs to the nearby golf club and went to try it out on the range. The results were magnificent! I kid you not it changed my whole view on golf, and i directly went in and bought a new membership as well as some new clubs. Been playing golf on a level that i, in the past, only could dream on! Thank you and keep up the good work!
All I have to say is WOW and THANK YOU! I have been playing golf for years with only irons in my bag. I can hit irons far and straight, but slice my driver hard 100% of the time. Recently I took my driver and wood to the range to "work" on my slice. I ended up slicing the entire bucket of balls trying all sorts of different things. A few days later I stumbled on this video and figured it wouldn't hurt to give it another go with these tips. First hit went completely straight and far! I couldn't believe my eyes. A couple buckets over a few days and my slice is gone. My drive went from 190 yard average with my 4 iron to 250-280 yards with my driver overnight. Rick Shiels I can't thank you enough!
Rick, i know this video is yonks old but..... i developed a slice in my game approx 6 rounds ago. Tried all sorts, closing the face, standing differently but nothing worked. Then after nearly booking a lesson with our local pro, i watched your video. Boy what a difference straight away. Confidence is back and hitting straighter than ever. Thank you so much. Al
Rick, thank you so much for this video. I implemented the drills in today’s round. Once everything started left, adjusted my aim and then it happened...my first ever eagle! 250 yard drive and a 40 yard chip into the cup! Thank you so much for the videos!!
Recently picked the game back up after a few years off and relocating to Canada in 2019. Had lessons back in the north of England when I was growing up and played a lot throughout my 20s. Best I got up to was a bogey player and shot an 85 as my best ever score. Just a note from Vancouver to say thank you, Rick. I’m a new subscriber and have been watching a lot of your stuff over the past few weeks, in between range visits and a few rounds! This video made me realise I had a weak grip and was slicing my drives (rather than what I thought was just a natural fade). A simple tweak using these tips and I’m hitting straighter and longer - at least 30-40 yards on my drives. Appreciate this video is two years old, but the advice is timeless. Keep up the great content and thanks for helping me fall in love with this great game again!
Haven't used a driver in years Purley because of the slice. Either slice it way right into the woods Or catch it perfect and hit it straight left into the woods.
I couldn’t believe how quickly using these tips took the slice out of tee shots!! I have so much more confidence in my driver rather than settling for an iron on the tee. Thanks a lot Rick!!
This video literally fixed my slice!!! It was all in the hand position. “Strengthening my grip” made everything hook and from there I eased it to straight. I can’t thank you enough!!!
Exact same for me, using his 2 knuckle method I actually find it very hard to slice now because its a lot harder to twist your wrist to open the club face, thus making it hard to slice now
My wife thinks I'm a good golfer because the one time we went together I had the game of my life. Now she wants to go with me more often and I'm frantically watching all the youtube tips I can find in the vain hope that I can maintain that facade.
I've had an awful slice for YEARS to the point I'd hardly hit my driver at all ,and when I did, I'd use the "aim WAAAY to the left Kentucky windage shot and hope for the best!...I'd use a 2 or 3 iron before my driver. I watched this video twice and just got back from the range. After less than 25 balls, I was driving straight as an arrow getting at least 200 yards! Exactly as Rick said, I started to hit to the left, then with a few more balls, I got the alignment right and BOOM!! There it was !! It also helped with my irons. Thanks a million!!!
This video absolutely fixed my slice I’ve had for over 10 years. I had managed to learn get it down to a playable fade but now I’m hitting straight/slight draws longer and more predictable! Thanks for a great lesson!
Rick...I've been playing golf for 40+ years and i've always had a fade/slice that I've tried to correct with quicker wrist and/or stance, not much luck to say the least! I watched your video the other night and had to try a few things you suggested, placing the towel just outside of the club takeaway path and rolling the arms instead of the wrists. It worked liked a champ after a few tries with the driver, once I was used to it, I increased clubhead speed and throwing some power into it.....WOW! I actually think I was drawing the ball as the wind was right to left (im left handed) and I was hitting it straight as an arrow for the most part...this put a huge smile on my face!!! Thank you for the great tips!!
Got my dad’s clubs after he passed ten years back, dusted them off this summer, kept slicing it at the range. I only wanted to do the clubs justice, learn how to hit the ball well, maybe play a round, but your love for the game rubbed off on me. I think I’m going to play more regularly now! Thanks
Rick you legend. I've been really struggle with a slice since an arm op, but watched this last night and headed to range after work today... Incredible results. Not one went right out of 50 balls. Cheers mate.
I've been slicing the ball for years..just got back from the course and I'm hitting it straight and getting more distance, well chuffed! Thanks Rick, hopefully I can maintain cheers
Jiggzie91same here. Took the forearm tip t o the course at the weekend and went from hitting 200 to ripping a 3 wood 275 uphill. Only problem there was the burn at 275 I don’t normally reach😂😂
Probably the best video I've seen to address this problem. When I was 12 I drove the green on a 270 yard par 4. Had loads of potential but as as I got bigger and stronger my swing became worse and worse. My slice is so bad I ended up giving up golf altogether. But over the last year I've been dying to get back into it. Can't wait to get out on the range and put these tips into practice
The tip about moving the ball more towards the toe of the club quite literally fixed my slice instantaneously. I can't believe I've been slicing my driver for 15 years when the fix (at least for me) was that simple. I literally practiced this with about a dozen balls before teeing off for 18 holes today, and then confidently took the driver out of the bag and hit a perfect little draw on every hole... I couldn't even belive it. I can't thank you enough for this video and I'm so pumped I found the channel.
Lemme tell you, I went out and tried some this stuff today to fix my slice. At first I was trying to do ALL of the tips at once and was only getting worse, but once I just focused on one thing, the grip adjustment alone made a night and day difference. Thank you for the advice!
Rick, thankyou! The reminder to use the grip you’ve suggested has solved my slicing. It’s still a work in progress to remind myself to move that grip further round, once that becomes muscle memory we are in business.
The grip change alone was a game changer. It feels really weird at first and the results are mixed but I had my best overall round of driving the ball. I’ll start focusing other tips little by little. Love your content Rick, I’ve never been able to be consistent off the tee until I saw your videos, you’re a great instructor!
All these negative comments. These are such simple tips. Take your time at the range. I started slicing nearly every ball. Watched this, went to the range and in 45 balls I was hitting 5-6 consistent 200 yard drives (I know that’s not far) but the point is, he knows what he’s talking about. Beautiful video.
So just practice swing the motions to gain muscle memory. Then it wont be a matter of remembering the tasks. For me, my slice was due to holding the club wrong. I changed up the posture and it started going straight, not thinking about it either. It might not work for everyone, but it's a good start.
You probably only need to remember a couple of these. For me it's the outside-in swing when I'm trying to really rip it(which is every time I hit my driver, lol), I'll subconsiously try to pull the clubhead towards me on the down swing to generate more speed. If you take the club away to the outside, you will swing from the inside, a golf swing is like a tight figure 8, not a flat plane.
Tried what Rick said to fix my slice and it worked on the very first swing! Continued to use it during a round and hit 80% of my drives straight down the middle . I’m so thankful.
Will take those to the range and work through them one by one to see the effect.... it may be after simply changing to a stronger grip it’s improved!... if not, will try number 2 and so on!... Thanks Rick 👌🏼
Rick i am just a right handed hobby golfer and have no clue what my handicap is but the tip to be able to see 3 knuckles on my left hand as completely fixed my inconsistent drives that typically where a horrible slice. I no longer have to fear my driver and enjoy the game a lot more. Thanks for all the videos and tips you put out.
I have watched this video multiple times over the last 2 days. Today I went out and finally was hitting it straight. You fixed a problem I have had since I was 13. I'm 35 now. Thank you so much for making this video!! That was the most fun ive had playing golf that I can remember .
I watched this video twice and went out to Top Golf…..I strengthened my grip and focused on crossing my forearms over. I was hitting balls right down the middle. This was the best golf advice I’ve ever received. Thanks for the tips 👌🏽
No joke, I quit playing years ago because of how bad my slice was and this video brought me back to the game. Anytime I feel my slice starting to creep back in, I review this video, figure out where my swing is going wrong, and get it corrected. This is the best slice coaching I ever received.
0:30 the first step is best advice ever heard. New golfer bought set of clubs an let’s say my shot was HORRENDOUS nicest way to say it. Came home watched this. Next day went to course ever ball went straight thank you!! Hope this video makes it way to all the new golfers was such a big help in the right direction
Perfect timing for the start of the season. The last time you did this it helped and this was a good refresher for my game tomorrow morning so I stay out of the fescue
Brilliant video, thanks Rick. I was working on this with my coach tonight on our floodlit golf range, before I saw this. He asked me to do a couple of extra bits but it still works. As a slicer he asked my to put my trail foot back 2 inches to open up the stance. Also to have the thumb on the right side of the club for the bottom hand. He also showed me the grip strengthening on the top hand. This all works. I used to be a drivers, hybrids and 3 Woods only girl, and try not to use the shallow irons. But my irons were good tonight. Thank you so much. 😃
Gotta thank you for the video. I only play 2-3 times a year since having kids. My slice was horrible, I watched this video twice and I wish I could show you my shot tracking from the range before and after. Massive improvement!
finally something that has worked for me. i am still hitting a little to the right but MUCH straighter. No extreme slice which was always present to the point i was about to give up!
Hook or slice pretty much the same thing, all that differs is whether closed or open face at impact. Prob got a over top swing with closed face. Watch Rick's vid for fixing it. Easily fixed. Fixed mine by weakening the lower hand grip . I have a neutral grip
@@AlexanderMacleod I started drawing/hooking when I started playing again since lockdown. Got filmed at my last lesson and it ended up being that my swing was waaay too flat at the top, with the club pointing at about 10 o clock when viewing from behind (as in camera to facing down the range). Hadnt done that since I first started playing. Took the swing back up high where it should be and kept everything else the same, instant fix and hitting it straight.
Rick you’re the BEST! Literally spent 2 hours at the range just on my Driver with the most wicked slice.. pulled up your video and had it down in a matter of 2 hits. THANKS RICK!!
I am almost 50 years old and have played a cut, often slice my entire life. I have watched to hundreds of videos. I have not taken a lesson. This is the first video that changed my swing. Many people say the same thing as Rick is saying but somehow this one got through. I am not sure what he did to make it click. Maybe it was the camera angle of what he is teaching. I dont know what it was but thank you Rick!!! I can now draw the ball. My problem is I am afraid to play my cut now as I am afraid of losing my draw. LOL
Went to the driving range with all this in mind and the video loaded on my cell phone. All this REALLY help and got rid of my slice !! I had a few that still went to the right but they were more of a baby fade than a slice. But the majority of my driver shots were more of a draw and A LOT STRAIGHTER !!! I will be spending the next few weeks at the range every day to get this swing to become consistent ! Thank you for this instruction !!
I have to say I’ve been slicing my driver for around ten years now even had pro lessons but nothing helped and I resorted to a 3 iron off the tee recently. Watched this plus a golf life video on the same topic and I’ve just hit 70 odd drives at the range and only sliced about 5. Thank you Rick for fixing a 10 year slice!!! 🎉
All of these tips I'd heard before and used but have never been able to fully fix my slice. Except for the second tip. I have never even realized it, but I cock my right wrist back as soon as I begin my backswing, and it was so noticeable when you pointed that tip out. It would immediately open the club face and unless I overcompensated enough with the other tips, it'd slice. So Mr. Shiels, you've done what no one could, my slice is cured. Thank you!
Hey @Rick Shiels Golf, got back into Golf last year and i've played a couple of times and never touched my driver because of the Slice Problem. Listened to it this morning and went to hit some balls tonight... WOW! Straight as a dart my Friend, thanks for your good Videos!
I am a massive slicer of the ball...don't play that much. Playing with my Dad (who loves his golf) and suggested I get some practice in. Guessing he wants a decent game. I went to the driving range today and tried tip 1. No more slice. Excellent advice, thank you Rick. I forgot the other 4 tips. Golf is so easy.
Thanks heaps Rick I tried these tips with driver today and hooked everything today but not one slice. What made my day was that I changed my grip to this on all clubs and gained 20 metres (22 yards) on all of them and dead straight!! You are a legend!
Rick, I’ve used these tips and man, I gotta tell ya, I’m driving the ball better than ever right now. Previous years, almost every drive was a slice. This year, the ball is going straight, the odd time goes left, but for the most part it’s going straight, and far. Thank you very much for these tips. Your videos are very easy to take in and understand. Again, thank you...keep them coming Rick!
Rick. You are a magician. I use to hit so many slices with everything in thr bag, this right here not only squared me up but I'm hitting distances at +30 and +40 yards then I was before.
Hi Rick, this video DEFINITELY helped me. It took me a few weeks but I totally 100% fixed a life-long slide. I am smashing the ball right up the middle about 180, which is a lot for me! I'm so happy I'm getting so much more accuracy and distance. Thank you and I have shared the video with many others.
Rick, I applied your technique to my irons, 27 degree 5 hybrid, 12 deg driver/3 wood and driver. On my patio the back of my net is about 20 feet from the TEE. The sound and feel of the ball strike was interesting. The immediate feedback from the spray powder on the driver was amazing. I was on the upper toe. I look forward to getting to the driving range to determine the trajectory. I'll keep you briefed. ed
Have been golfing for years and over time my drives have become worse when it comes to slicing. Before getting lessons, I stumbled upon your video. I made the grip change and it helped tremendously. Just got done at the range. If you see this, thank you! I owe ya one.
Rick, just had to add a comment. Thanks for this video, your knuckle tip helped soooo much. Played my nine hole course twice today and hit everything straight just by using your knuckle lesson. The hardest hole on course is 450 and I had par twice. Missed birdie by inches second time!! My golf friends couldn’t believe the difference. Thanks again. I am sending this video to my son. He is a big hitter but an even bigger slicer.
This one video, mainly the first step with the left hand placement has changed my life, after slicing the driver for 15 years to now hitting it straight 9/10 times, (10th time being a slight pull which is fine). Cheers Rick!
This video really helped me fix my slice with my Driver. I went to the range today and hit my first 3 mintues of Driver shots with a huge slice. I remembered some of the tips Rick gave on this channel and it helped keep my drives straight or with a draw for the rest of the day. Thanks Rick!
If this video helped you please subscribe and share with at least one friend!
This is exactly what I need. Used to hit a draw but since returning from lockdown I've gone all slicey and couldnt work out why👌
Thanks Mr. Rick Im about to go to the range and practice.
Nice vid fire 🔥
I need these 5 tips as a 1-page infographic PDF I can pull up on my phone during these early-season range days. Love it! Thanks, Rick!

I kid you not it changed my whole view on golf, and i directly went in and bought a new membership as well as some new clubs. Been playing golf on a level that i, in the past, only could dream on! Thank you and keep up the good work!
The hardest part of taking advice is having to do it all the opposite way as a lefty 😅

Fuck bro golf is hard enough.
Some of the best advice I have ever had, you deserve 1 mil subs Rick!!
What Ethan said --- can't wait to follow this. Subscribed and rang the bell. :)
shill account?
175 disliking this clearly watched this went to the range and sliced the first shot
me
Sliced 70-80 percent of the bucket actually. Guess lessons are needed 🤷🏽♂️
Haven't used a driver in years Purley because of the slice.
Either slice it way right into the woods
Or catch it perfect and hit it straight left into the woods.
@@grumpy-dad3701 ahaha I would do the same
I couldn’t believe how quickly using these tips took the slice out of tee shots!! I have so much more confidence in my driver rather than settling for an iron on the tee. Thanks a lot Rick!!
This video literally fixed my slice!!! It was all in the hand position. “Strengthening my grip” made everything hook and from there I eased it to straight. I can’t thank you enough!!!
Exact same for me, using his 2 knuckle method I actually find it very hard to slice now because its a lot harder to twist your wrist to open the club face, thus making it hard to slice now
I've just started and I find this guys advice the best yet. Short, concise, not too much talking and plenty of shots to back up his info. Thanks!.
Which of the 5 tips fixed it for you?
I tried this out today, thank you so much!!!!! I got my first birdie today !!!!!!
Wow. Unbelievably great video. Thank you, so much!
I've been slicing the ball for years..just got back from the course and I'm hitting it straight and getting more distance, well chuffed! Thanks Rick, hopefully I can maintain cheers
That’s awesome well done Ian! 🙌
Tuck that right elbow Ian! Glue it to your side on the downswing .
Great video Rick and the team. Fix my slices
This video single handedly changed from me slicing 90% of my drives around 200 yards to hitting down the fareway 280.. 👌
Wow! I hope I can duplicate that. Which tip do you think was best? Which was hardest to replicate?
bobcat224 try # 2 first. I used to open face during take-away causing a weak fade....difference is about 55 yrds!
Quality
Jiggzie91same here. Took the forearm tip t o the course at the weekend and went from hitting 200 to ripping a 3 wood 275 uphill. Only problem there was the burn at 275 I don’t normally reach😂😂
Same... the tip that changed mine was the grip. I haven't even thought about the others, because the change in grip worked first time out!
Watched this video today 1 hour before my game. Did the first 2 steps and nailed it straight down the fairway 80% of the time! Thank you so much!!!!
Much better watching this than all those advertisements with special techniques developed by former pro coaches lol
Lemme tell you, I went out and tried some this stuff today to fix my slice. At first I was trying to do ALL of the tips at once and was only getting worse, but once I just focused on one thing, the grip adjustment alone made a night and day difference. Thank you for the advice!
"When you launch your head cover 20 yards onto a busy driving range".
You can stick some tee pegs through a towel if you're really worried about that like tent stakes. I've done that before. If you catch it, you'll know.
😂
legend.
Tbf
I’ve done it with an 8 iron once
Lol, I bet you won’t do that again
Nice! Now I only have five more things to circulate in my head as I'm setting up my shots. 🙄
So just practice swing the motions to gain muscle memory. Then it wont be a matter of remembering the tasks.
For me, my slice was due to holding the club wrong. I changed up the posture and it started going straight, not thinking about it either. It might not work for everyone, but it's a good start.
That's exactly what i thought
i’m playing tomorrow or the next day and i’m gonna write these on my hand briefly to try to remember them
On top of foot placement look down arms stiff bend knees slightly don’t let them move and don’t roll your hips
This is what Golfers need a detailed brake down of the grip and the swing.
They also need to see their swing on camera. And find out which of these things is causing the issue
I have watched this video multiple times over the last 2 days. Today I went out and finally was hitting it straight. You fixed a problem I have had since I was 13. I'm 35 now. Thank you so much for making this video!! That was the most fun ive had playing golf that I can remember .
I haven’t sliced the ball since 2019. That was the last time I played golf
same
I watched this video twice and went out to Top Golf…..I strengthened my grip and focused on crossing my forearms over. I was hitting balls right down the middle. This was the best golf advice I’ve ever received. Thanks for the tips 👌🏽
Literally everything said I’ve got a tendency of doing so this is great help
Same. He’s a great teacher
the strengthening of the grip portion is an absolute GAME CHANGER. It instantly fixed my slice ...thanks!
Hey Rick, almost at one mil. Second. I can't wait, already can tell its a great vid.
No joke, I quit playing years ago because of how bad my slice was and this video brought me back to the game. Anytime I feel my slice starting to creep back in, I review this video, figure out where my swing is going wrong, and get it corrected. This is the best slice coaching I ever received.
Idk why I'm even watching this, I don't even play golf
Recommended?
Same, but ohwell pretty much ended up watching all his videos, felling like i could take tiger on now ✊✊
Get yourselves out on the course guys
Look at the bright side, you can stun your friends advising them on how to fix their devastating slice
buggub buggub BBB ookiooooooimninm
To The person who disliked this vid: I bet u aren’t here for learning
does it really bother you that someone dislikes a video.... lol
Also tip 4 should be the first to change. Open face has nothing to do with the slice, open clubface to the path does.
True, although this one was more succinct.
Sometimes it could be click the wrong button without realizing it
These will be getting used on Wednesday! Let's hope for an improvement :)
Gotta thank you for the video. I only play 2-3 times a year since having kids.
My slice was horrible, I watched this video twice and I wish I could show you my shot tracking from the range before and after. Massive improvement!
fixed my slice first shot ended up out driving my dad
lol my dad drives it 300 it'll take me a bit more than fixing my slice to beat him
Jman 2_0 lol my dad can’t even break 200
Luke Bowman my dad can drive 150 on a good day🤣🤣
I don't have a dad
i reckon most of these comments are just shills
finally something that has worked for me. i am still hitting a little to the right but MUCH straighter. No extreme slice which was always present to the point i was about to give up!
This would be perfect if I wasnt hooking it at the moment 😂
Same!
Hook or slice pretty much the same thing, all that differs is whether closed or open face at impact. Prob got a over top swing with closed face. Watch Rick's vid for fixing it. Easily fixed. Fixed mine by weakening the lower hand grip . I have a neutral grip
Same here. Everything is hooking for me except I managed to slice one drive today but i had to feel that to get rid of the hook.
Took the swing back up high where it should be and kept everything else the same, instant fix and hitting it straight.
same lmaooo
Thanks!
Dustin Johnson is a freak of nature. He's got an extremely bowed wrist... ouch!
no - it's just his natural way of swinging. Doing it when your body is not accustomed to it would be freakish
Dustin is amazing but you couldn’t teach somebody to do what he does and you wouldn’t want to.
Perfect timing mate. I have been slicing and desperately needed these back to basics. Can't wait to get on the practice range tomorrow.
I was watching a different video and I saw this and saw slice in the title and instantly clicked on it
Thank you so much! I’ve had a bad slice for years. This instantly fixed it and I played my best game today.
Threw my club and it still sliced
Rick you’re the BEST! Literally spent 2 hours at the range just on my Driver with the most wicked slice.. pulled up your video and had it down in a matter of 2 hits. THANKS RICK!!
Broke someone’s window with my slice maybe I soulda watched this before my round today 😬
Rip
I am almost 50 years old and have played a cut, often slice my entire life. I have watched to hundreds of videos. I have not taken a lesson. This is the first video that changed my swing. Many people say the same thing as Rick is saying but somehow this one got through. I am not sure what he did to make it click. Maybe it was the camera angle of what he is teaching. I dont know what it was but thank you Rick!!! I can now draw the ball. My problem is I am afraid to play my cut now as I am afraid of losing my draw. LOL
The 0 dislikes are the people who don't slice the ball anymore because they watched this video!
Rick Shiels is my unofficial golf coach. Love this guy!
Best video I've ever seen on fixing a slice (and in less than 9 minutes!). Well done Rick.
This and your driver guide actually helped a lot. Recorded my swing and was able to look at it piece by piece and make adjustments. Appreciate it man.
Reaffirming tips and ways to help us amateurs build and keep a golf swing is always a help. Good video, thanks.
Thank you!
That’s awesome to hear! 🙌
I'll keep you briefed. ed
The extra 4 minutes were worth it watching this video over the shorter ones. May go watch the 4 part series now. Thank you, Rick!
Have been golfing for years and over time my drives have become worse when it comes to slicing. Before getting lessons, I stumbled upon your video. I made the grip change and it helped tremendously. Just got done at the range. If you see this, thank you! I owe ya one.
This worked perfect for me! The best video I've seen on this.
What I like about your videos , is that you explain everything so easily.
Keep up the good work rick
Rick Shields videos are the most thorough and helpful of any I’ve seen.
This video really helped me fix my slice with my Driver. I went to the range today and hit my first 3 mintues of Driver shots with a huge slice. I remembered some of the tips Rick gave on this channel and it helped keep my drives straight or with a draw for the rest of the day. Thanks Rick!
I watched your slice fixing videos at least 20 times and today I finally started hitting driver straight. Thank you!
Rick mate you have single handedly improved my golf game from a 25 handicap to scratch within about a 2 year span. Can't thank you enough.
