So, one question that didn't get addressed that I'd like to know is: How much of this study/documentary/video will be available to those of us who are unfortunately unable to contribute directly to the study? Will there be free content we can see and help spread the word with just as loyal fans of both channels and metal in general?
This is such an amazing project!! I can't wait to see what you can put out. Much love for doing so much for the metal scene!! I'd love for you to think about adding Alex the Terrible and Justin Bonitz to a second waze of artist if you can. Alex has an amazingly deep and powerful voice that he can fill a show without a mic. Bonitz can change how he does harsh and clean so fast and so much that it's unlike most artists. Again, thanks for all you are doing!!
I bet Voice therapists (just like my mom) would get a huge kick out of these studies. It'll help so many people, just not only Metal singers but also in speech therapies and so on 🤩
@@akiraalbireo397 exactly. I work with children that have all the other relative means to speak, and the understanding etc, but can't form the words, they're just able to make the 'sound' of the words. When everything else is present and correct as it were, why does the vocabulary fail. It's super interesting!
Never in my life could you have told me a opera singer who wasn’t a fan of metal would have such an impact on the metal community and then lead the charge of groundbreaking research to further grow metal 🤘🏻
ladies and gentlemen, we've done it. we turned Elizabeth into a full blown metalhead. I'm not really a big fan of harsh vocals, but studies like this will legitimize that vocal technique as a singing style. and it's being spearheaded by a highly trained opera singer, how awesome is that. a lot of people used to think, oh that's just screaming any one can do that. studies like this will show the skill that it really takes to do it in a healthy way. as others have said this may possibly affect general speech pathology as well.
This research could help in other vocal and speech areas. Especially after vocal chord injuries surgeries, children who can't talk properly to see if their issues are to do with voice box, larynx, tongue etc. It's so interesting!
I loved hearing Tank say that listening to harsh vocals can be relaxing to him. I find it can be soothing at times. For me, it can cut though my anxiety and filter out the mental fog/static that fills my brain when I am stressed/anxious. If I need to concentrate on something, listening Jinjer keeps me focused. it sounds counter intuitive, but it works for me.
I've seen it described as 'metal is the sandpaper to my rough edges' and I love that analogy because it really encapsulates why many of us find comfort in metal and harsh vocals
I’m so excited for all of this! I donated because just $2 for access to those papers is probably the cheapest paywall I’ve ever come across in research. Well worth it!
Totally! Thank you so much for that, and know that in a month or two, I'm going to release the first study with Will to all backers, including the $2 tiers. It's not a part of this Kickstarter, but it was on the pilot study... so I want to share!
Wow, that's a great deal for those! I haven't donated yet, but I think I may have to. I am currently a student, but I'm going to mourn the loss of access to all the scholarly databases when I graduate. This could help appease my curiosity without the $30-50 price tag per paper I usually see.
@@christineg8151 I feel you. I finished college quite a few years ago now and I sorely miss having all of that free access to research papers and journals!
What really gets me excited about this is the possibilities for treatments to come out of it. She's better now, but my mom suffered from paralysis of the vocal cords for about 4 years. Studies like this might find alternative treatment options to literally give people their voices back... and that's amazing!
Nice to see you two talking about this exciting project. I hope it helps getting the funding at least to the first stretch goal to pay for the mentioned videographer.
Would love to see George Corpsegrinder Fisher on this study at some point. I'm sure if you just put a claw machine in front of him, he'll do whatever you want.
Thats so exciting! I have a disability that affects my speech. Sometimes, i can't speak at all and just have to write everything. Seeing this research going forward makes me so happy bc that means people like me might be able to communicate better our voices in the future!
For true scientific research, the larger the n( number of results, participants, patients, etc.) the more reliable the results. Thus- kudos and best wishes on such a landmark study!
Very cool project @TheCharismaticVoice and awesome that you bring it to light Tank. As a researcher I know how hard and it is to get funding and it is truly inspiring to see crowdfunded science take flight and be managed properly. Elizabeth mentioned it but didn't give it the importance it deserves. The fact that they're funding it through a nonprofit also means that they CAN share the raw data openly. Many funding agencies still won't allow that.
And so often the amount & types of academic research are limited to the entities who fund it, many times with ulterior motives to produce a specific outcome that benefits a particular company, product or other way to make the funding entity money. This study is so different & I’m super excited to support it.

Two of my favorite child-adjacent insomniacs. As a donor and a true, professional, nerd of the head and neck region, I am really excited. Those electrodes.... a whole different level above acupuncture. "Tea Kettle Scream"... LOVE IT! Very physio-descriptive. Love this discussion and content and research. If I win the lottery in the next few days (right, sure) I'll be tossing in a few more bucks for the fly-on-the-wall donator option... but there's no chance of THAT happening, lol.
I've been following this since the sessions with Will Ramos. I'm exremely interested to find out what they learn from Tatiana, in particular. Devin Townsend would be incredible for the project, as his clean singing is SO incredible! There are just so many artists I'd be fascinated with... Alex Terrible, for example - I discovered his channel well before STP was a thing.
I love thinking of this study as studying the metal community in an anthropological way. We're studying how this language is made, naming it (Cookie Monster, pig squeal) so we can teach it to a younger generation, so the language can survive and evolve.

Her enthusiasm about this project makes me excited for the project. Understanding that she came from an opera-style background and is now assisting with a study on harsh vocals is very cool.
I hope they can add Mayu from Nemophila (Japan). She has unique, and instantly recognisable vocals and can switch seamlessly from harsh to clean, plus a few variations. I'll admit that I was never overly keen on harsh vocals until I discovered Mayu. Check out Dissension and Ama-te-ras if you haven't seen her perform, on Nemophila's channel.
So happy to see this interview! I watched Elizabeth’s video a couple of weeks ago and it’s fantastic that you’re helping expand interest in this study. Thanks for what you do!
Of all the music reactors I've heard, I think you might be the best interviewer. Most of the others get to a point where the conversation gets fairly comfortable, but I typically have to sit through some awkward pauses and clumsy questions in order to get to the more comfortable part. With this interview, you gave a great intro and then it was super comfortable with how you brought in Elizabeth and then immediately started asking good questions at a good pace and with the right amount of you adding your two cents as well. Kudos.
i love this, they got almost half a million for the project, hope the videos/documentary are worth it but im also very happy there's good science and communication that's gonna come out of this.
It would be cool to talk to Chris from Lord of the Lost, I think he also doesn't know the ins and outs of what he does when growling. Also, Marcela Bovio, if I am not mistaken, teaches growls here in the Netherlands
Just incredible!! Elizabeth is going to make a real contribution to vocal research. Kudos to her and the artists who have said yes to do this, thanks Tank for highlighting this project, #SimplyAmazing
I am so stoked to see how this turns out. I am absolutely fascinated with this stuff!! I also would love for people to understand why I love harsh vocals, and why those vocalists are so incredibly talented. I hope it brings some greater appreciation to harsh vocals.
The biggest thing I want to get out of this for me is learning a truly safe and sustainable way to do harsh vocals. I have learned how to do really distorted cleans (think Crawling by Linkin Park) and can do them all day from the lessons and tutorials I’ve seen. Because there is so much info for the regular vocal cords. I can do harsh vocals and they sound good, but I can tell from a short session that it’s not sustainable and I get mixed messages from online tutorials because no one really knows how it works
Thank you Tank for highlighting this important project- this is why your content is unique. Donated because this is a super important research that deserves support from music lovers. The MRI footage is going to be wild 😮
i love The Charismatic Voice. Excited to find your channel. Excited about this vocal research too. As a clean vocalist, I find the harsh vocals done in a healthy way intriguing. It is almost like a medical trial here where the larger the group, the better slice of singers can be depicted. So cool. I hope down the line we can find out the theories and practices that work with music/vocal therapy to help those of us with some sort of mental thing going on function better..
These singers have demonstrated staying power in what they do. Finding out how they do it is so important for many reasons but definitely one would be to help people do it in a healthy way. Between vocal issues with doing those things improperly and hearting loss issues personal physical health in the music industry has not always been something that has gotten a lot of attention. It can be a sensitive subject because if a singer lets on that they are having problems it can cause a perception that damages their reputation. Technology has been key in addressing many issues with hearing so now it's time to do the same with vocal issues.
I mean you have all the different versions of "black metal" singing, all the kinds of different guttural vocals in various forms of death metal, all the metalcore and deathcore stuff, hardcore and whatever Jaari Maenpa from Wintersun does (with perfect enunciation and interchange between clean vocals and Rob Halford-like screaming).
I am over the moon excited in seeing how this research will be :D I think as many say in the comments below this is fantastic and a wonderful idea and I am really grateful to both Tank and The Charismatic Voice in sharing this with us! And Yes I totally agree with both that finding out why you become calm of listening to Metal, this conversation I have so many times with my folks as they never really understand that. And putting that to the test and seeing a result I hope will be really interesting. All the best of luck with the research \m/
I'm not a singer, but I'm very happy to see this project, and I am in fact a first day contributor to it. (and I hardly EVER contribute to Kickstarter campaigns.)
I was at a meet and greet with Jinjer, just yesterday and someone asked Tati about her participation in this study and then I see this video today. BTW, if you have the opportunity to and can afford it, I recommend everyone to get the VIP experience. It’s not like the typical meet and greet, where you are hearded by the band and get an autograph. You get to hear two songs in sound check, hang out with the band on stage for about 15 minutes, then have an autograph session and a professional photo taken with the band. The whole band is very friendly and will discuss almost anything with you
Thank you for arranging this conversation which reminded me I hadn’t yet signed up - I got distracted during the original campaign & somehow forgot. 💜💜💜
Its crazy that this came out the day after I had the pleasure of meeting Jinjer and someone asked Tatiana about this and how she felt about doing this she just said that she was nervous about doing it
Man, I would love to see Devin Townsend do this. Also, being in SLC, I kinda hope that maybe if Melissa Bonny is out here, maybe one of her bands will tour out here :)
Awesome! I didn't love harsh vocals until Fleshgod Apocalypse, when there were other clear melodic lines, letting the vocal instrumeny shine in new ways.
It’s actually kind of insane the amount of gatekeeping has been going around since the launch from people who, following my own logic, should be the first to get excited about how this could open up doors to the research findings actually being public and mainstream. It made me feel very disappointed in a lot of people who I expected to know better, but alas, I guess they want metal to keep being this small, scrutinized and looked down upon thing. Whatever floats their boat, I guess.
@@levischorpioen I was raised in the “pro audio” religious system that believed in magical mic preamps, tonewood in electric guitars, any mic not used by hitler is inferior, measurements don’t mean anything, all sorts of science denial. It took years to shake it off in any meaningful way. My penance is now trying to debunk this stuff and create products based on reason, critical thinking band evidence based audio. I’m still swimming upstream against my own indoctrination
I am so excited for this study. I have been following the Charismatic Voices work on harsh vocal research since the first video with Will. Tank - you did a great job allowing Elizabeth chance to clarify the purpose and the intent of the study. Thank you both for this video. I have recently been looking extensively into the nervous system and how conditions or malfunctions in it can affect our physical and mental health, so the end of this interview about sound and/or frequency being used as music therapy was fascinating. I wonder if it has to do with stimulation of the vagus nerve, which acts as a sensory or system reset?
First time I heard Slipknot I couldn’t help being aware of the varying vocal styles and voice control and thinking how does he do that. Having a better idea of how the voice works in multiple scenarios can only have multiple other, unseen, un imagined positive results too!
I've back you Elizabeth, I'm excited, and hoping will prevent people blowing out their voice. It's sad when it happens, especially when the band breaks-up because of it. There are a few singers I'd love to see added... Totally wishful thinking... But, The lead singer from 'I See Stars' does very high singing, like falsetto type thing, and harsh vocals.
You should ask Tom Keifer from the 80's rock band Cinderella to join your program. He has had voice issues in the past. Love his music. Check out his videos. I saw him in concert in April! He is still amazing!!❤
A side effect from this that i dont know if people have brought up is band duration. Im not a musician, but i have favorite bands, its just natural. But less than perfect techniques can lead to bodies breaking, its natural across all types of work, but this can help keep vocalists in the game longer, and more music coming! I do hope she could get a black metal vocalist at some point, but im all for whoever they bring in
Unfortunately due to circumstances I cannot contribute to this project, but this is genuinely a good idea. The more people understand various vocal techniques, then people can learn a safe way to do them, if they so desire. Also medical science will benefit cause they may learn more about the vocal structures than ever known before

I can do harsh vocals and they sound good, but I can tell from a short session that it’s not sustainable and I get mixed messages from online tutorials because no one really knows how it works
crazy going from music reactions on YT to some amazing efforts in the metal community!
Top notch interviewing skills, Tank!
Elizabeth, thank you for your passion that is fueling this project! Really amazing stuff!
I'm a contribater to the kickstarter. THANKS so much on making a video on this. Travis is why I donated! Awesome!!!
Already watched all about this on her channel but will happily sit and watch through this! Lets get more attention on this project
Thanks Tank! for helping get the word out!!~~
very cool to see you covering this as well Tank!
What a great project!
This is super intriguing. Excited to see how this plays out.
Tank, this is awesome. Thanks for posting about Elizabeth’s work!
The whole band is very friendly and will discuss almost anything with you
I absolutely lovet that you two are some of the more communicative reactor channels on YT.
Once the techniques are better understood, it can help many kids avoid damaging their voices.
Well about Music therapy. Birds also scream or sing all day. 🤣😋 Thanks Tank
Both great youtubers and professionals, on top of great wholesome people.
Somewhere ther is a purple EV-1 guitar in there too.
Wow... That is so cool. I can't wait to see the documentary.
Thank you for arranging this conversation which reminded me I hadn’t yet signed up - I got distracted during the original campaign & somehow forgot. 💜💜💜
I love Elizabeth's channel. This is a cross over I was not expecting but one I love
Its crazy that this came out the day after I had the pleasure of meeting Jinjer and someone asked Tatiana about this and how she felt about doing this she just said that she was nervous about doing it
i think courtney from spiritbox would be another interesting one to look at for this. she has a pretty powerful voice
Man, I would love to see Devin Townsend do this. Also, being in SLC, I kinda hope that maybe if Melissa Bonny is out here, maybe one of her bands will tour out here :)
Thought I saw his pic in the thumbnail, so I'm hoping he's in. He had a great interview with her, so I wouldn't be surprised
Awesome! I didn't love harsh vocals until Fleshgod Apocalypse, when there were other clear melodic lines, letting the vocal instrumeny shine in new ways.
Such a cool project.
This is awesome! There is so much religious dumbshittery in music tech, any time actual scientific or reason methods are used we actually advance
You two worked great together.
This is soo cool!!!! Very, very interesting!!!!
I don't even know anything about vocals in general but this research is so cool to see
I am so excited for this study.
This and Driver 61 working on driving a car upside-down are the two best projects on youtube.
You look like this Tompkin foo, he was an excellent friend of mine. Just like him your a mangot in my books tank!
A side effect from this that i dont know if people have brought up is band duration. Im not a musician, but i have favorite bands, its just natural. But less than perfect techniques can lead to bodies breaking, its natural across all types of work, but this can help keep vocalists in the game longer, and more music coming! I do hope she could get a black metal vocalist at some point, but im all for whoever they bring in
Saw Parkway drive in Melbourne (australia this week). Winstons voice was done by the end of the show, and still had a heap of shows left.
This is such a cool idea I had to get involved right away
She is about to change the metal community forever
this is sick af
Unfortunately due to circumstances I cannot contribute to this project, but this is genuinely a good idea. The more people understand various vocal techniques, then people can learn a safe way to do them, if they so desire. Also medical science will benefit cause they may learn more about the vocal structures than ever known before
YOOOO Devin Townsend wanting to get in on this is killer!!!!
I can't wait to see these videos
