      Just an idea but I think you should do this with elite level beatboxers the sounds some of them make is insane and some of them have amazing inward bass there's an amazing beatboxer with the arguably the best inward bass on the planet called King Inertia and he's from the US I think it would make a brilliant video

      He's not doing anything that long time death, black, doom, or symphonic metal bands have already been doing. Heck the band is not doing anything new.
      Blackend death metal had been around for ages. Winds of Plauge was doing what his band is doing. The list goes on.
      A number of these bands are very overrated for not breaking new ground. Meanwhile bands Fleashgod, Dark Tranquility, Mors, etc get little credit for the paths they paved.

What is even more amazing when you think about it is how the muscles have to tighten into the right shape but will be loose enough to vibrate correctly to get those sounds. • @SpaceMarshalGyorni
      @SpaceMarshalGyorni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      Of course she was moved. Science is pretty vast already, and new discoveries tend to be tiny and incremental. Most PhDs will look at some tiny facet of something, dig just a tiny bit deeper into an already well-established theory of their respective fields. Do you have any idea how rare it is for a scientist to do something truly original, to lay groundwork on something that's literally never been done before?
      The most amazing thing about this is not what it shows - it's how many questions it creates. Interesting, unanswered, and fundamentally *new* questions. When that old guy at the end of the video said it's gonna take them years to analyze the footage and model what's going on, he wasn't joking, nor exaggerating. It is literally going to take years. There are so many roads of inquiry opening up here, there will be genuine research based on this for a long fucking time. More than a few students will work in that lab and base their master's and doctoral theses on this. All because people on the internet, just for shits and giggles, pushed an opera singer to comment on increasingly extreme metal vocals.

    Rock and metal vocalists are prone to vocal chord injuries, and this kind of research is super helpful. Seeing what his vocal chords are doing is so eye opening. This really explains why proper technique is so important. Bringing your vocal chords that close together, paired with that amount of air pressure, can go awry, just saying. Yes, I've injured myself in the past...
    Thanks for doing this, and thanks to Will for putting himself through this for science. He's an absolute legend.

    Thank you for this!! For those of us teaching this stuff technically, anytime we get to see a legit scope of a harsh vocalist is very valuable! A lot of his sounds are what I often call a “low fry” because they’re mostly some version of compressed/closed folds and tissues involved in the tone though it sounds deep and low to the listener. I have a theory that Phil Bozeman’s gutteral lows are created in a similar physiological manner. Thanks again for showing the world some legit harsh vocal research! 🤘👏👏👏

      False cord means the vocal folds are opening more but the false folds/aryepiglottic fold are coming together and vibrating above them. So in this case I think false cord used in pretty much all his screams. In pure fry the false folds would remain open as they are not engaged and not hide the vocal folds from view, and the vocal folds would be closed more to make the distortion. Its also possible to use false cord + fry where both are closed and I think he does a lot of that. Unfortunately it would not be possible to see how constricted the vocal folds are as they are under the other tissue but you can hear the difference between fry and false cord so you can kind of tell how much closure there is in the vocal folds themselves by the sound. Its also interesting to note when you actually sing words in either there is some opening and closing of the vocal folds in both fry and false cord but I think fry is constricting the vocal folds themselves more throughout the process of singing.

    • @XwoooahX
      @XwoooahX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Also sorry for the paragraph. I could talk about this all day because it took me two years to learn to do harsh vocals and I did tons of research and had to really understand what was happening in my throat to get why some things worked and other things didn't! I learned that I had tried breath distortion early on where everything is open and you are blowing tons of air and basically I would feel like I was hyperventilating after doing it a few minutes. Understanding some closure has to occur to hold back air in the throat, either by vocal folds or by the false folds and tissue above was key to doing death metal and black metal songs without killing myself!

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@XwoooahX Yes! Any sort of closed folds across the top of the trachea will control the release of air even in a loud sound. Open fold sounds have us running out of air quickly. We don’t necessarily have to close the false cords to do a “false cord” sound. Most of the people I teach are doing a type false cord sound with both the vocal folds and false folds in a open position. A good example would be to check out Lauren Hart’s endoscopy on TH-cam. So I think it would be nice to have two names for the sounds. One name for false cords together, one name for false cords apart.

The respect that a deathcore metallist and a highly technically trained opera singer has for one another here can teach us all something.
    Thank you for your hard work, and thank you for this documentary.

    The metal musician community(especially the vocalists) finally gets the respect it deserves. People finally see how much skill and talent is required when vocalists belt out those "Cookie Monster" Vocals. Yeah I hate that label too. Thanx for the video.

      In some ways, the human voice the most difficult instrument to master, because it requires internal skill of the anatomy. Truly impressive.

    That asymmetrical twisting motion he did to achieve some sounds had me so stunned and in awe. It was just a wicked thing to see. Thanks to the both of you for doing this.

    As a Speech and Language Pathologist and a Metal girl, I will DEFINITELY be at the premiere!!! That will be SO ENJOYABLE to watch! 😍😍😍😍
    Edit: the video is not over yet and I already need someone to lift my jaw for me 😱 Will Ramos is A UNPARALLELED BEAST!!! 🤘🏾

    As a metal, Lorna Shore and of course Will Ramos fan. I found this extremely interesting. Will and Dickie Allen got me into the tunnel throat style of vocals and its interesting to see how the muscles in the throat work in order to make these guttural sounds, then using the mouth and tongue to create the tunnel effect. Its fascinating.

    My jaw fell to the floor and stayed there the entire time I watched his vocal chords in action. Amazing and unreal. Thanks Will Ramos for letting us visually check out your incredible voice. Hands down one of the coolest videos I've ever seen on TH-cam ngl.

    This needs to be one a series. Bring in more vocalists, record with room mics also. Then compare similar sounds to the videos of each respective vocalist. It would make an amazing data set for research.

      I agree with this. They should get Fred Nylist or Guillaume Vilenueve on here. They have the most insane whistle screams.

      I actually think it'd be more interesting to see more "classic" death metal vocalists like Corpsegrinder or John Tardy, to see if there's a difference in technique.
