Most importantly, congrats to Ann Wilson, who announced last week that she has completed her chemotherapy treatments, and is preparing to go back out on the road next year. Stay well Ann, and we look forward to you rocking on for years to come.
As someone who seen Heart live a few years ago for the 5th time, they are still worth going and seeing if you are lucky enough to get a chance! I urge anyone who hasn't seen them live to go while you can, if she does go back on tour. You won't be disappointed at all.

Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s longtime collaborator) wrote this. He offered the song to Stevie Nicks but she passed on it. This & Alone were HUGE hits for Heart in the 80s. They pretty much ruled MTV back then.
@@madsatyrI like the music, beat, and the feeling it engenders. The subject matter is a little off to me. I’m not going to whine about or give up a song , just because of a little less stellar song. Which one of us does difficult things perfectly, time after time. Not a play to Cyndi Lauper.
@@madsatyr Same here. When I got to my first permanent duty station in the Air Force, "We Built This City" was on the air. I have memories of listening to this at night with no lights but the LEDs on my roommate's stereo. Reminds me of the first days of me really being an adult, out from under parents and out of the nanny state of Air Force training.
Nancy Wilson sang the lead on this one and she can sing too. She's usually singing harmony and it's nice to hear her on lead. This song was one of their biggest power ballads as well. Also, Heart doesn't get enough love, the Wilson sisters are such legends.
I was literally just gonna put about the same comment. When you see them live, it's Nancy singing lead on this, not Ann. Nancy can sing damn near as good as her sister.
I met Heart by accident many years ago in Dublin. I was working there and they stayed at the same hotel. They were in the bar after the gig and someone I was talking to noticed them. He went over and asked them if they’d do a song at the piano! Cheeky or what? Anyway, the keyboard player immediately got up and waltzed over to the piano followed by a smiling Nancy. They did about 40 minutes of standards and Nancy absolutely belted them out. She has one hell of a voice and she was six feet away from me. I’d never been a fan and still haven’t bought a single Heart song. However, my admiration for Nancy and her voice is enormous. She seemed really nice too 😊
They're great sports to do 40mins AFTER already doing a gig. I've worked with a small band who, after the concert and meet and greets with fans, just wanted to chill and calm down. Professionals are on a next level, and the ones that absolutely love music for music sake even more so.
Fun story I've heard about the recording of this song. Apparently on the day of recording, Nancy had a cold. If you listen carefully to her vocal on the chorus you can hear a delightfully raspy, gravely quality to her voice. The producers loved it- even if she never really sounded like that again.
What is even more impressive is that Nancy says she had a brutal head cold when recording this song. They tried recordings after she recovered, but none of them matched this one (I guess the cold giving her that raspy, passionate sound they wanted).
Rick Beato (on his channel) makes a lot of Top 20 lists of guitar superlatives - best metal riffs, best electric solos, etc. He plays them himself, he's very skilled and knowledgable. The one time I saw him use the original was in his Top 20 Acoustic Intros. He said "I don't dare even try it." Then played a clip of Nancy's Crazy On You intro, of course.
My godmother passed away from covid during the pandemic. Heart was one of her very favorite bands. Her birthday is today, October 8th. What are the chances of that! Thanks for unknowingly picking the perfect group for today review!
You heard it while grocery shopping and like me will stop in your tracks in the isles and completely forget what you were shopping for. One of the best songs from Heart
This song is Nancy’s big song of the 80’s. It’s great to see her see her sing it with a mandolin in concert now. She’s an amazing talent in her own right. These two sisters are everything!!!
Nancy doesn't get nearly enough credit for her stringed instrument playing. Heart has always had great guitarists involved with the band but Nancy wrote a lot of those riffs
In her own right? She's a beast! Ever since I was a kid and learning the guitar (Heart riffs from the 70s) in the guitar community, she's always been knows as a phenomenal guitarist. She's never been one of those names that's like, she's pretty good at guitar ... for a girl ... No, just, 'She's a bad ass on guitar.
@@SubCultureMEDIAHilbert I meant as a vocalist. Don’t get it twisted. Pretty girl? Heart only did “sexy look” videos in the 80’s because they were told they had to. I think of them as anything but just their looks. Nancy is more than just a guitar god, too, that’s all. She rates, period.
Did you realize you’ve sometimes been reacting to three Wilson sisters? Ann and Nancy have an older sister named Lynn. She provided backup vocals on some songs, participated in live performances and also in costume design.
Nancy Wilson was such an inspiration as a young girl. Nancy played guitar when women really weren't "supposed to", so I learned guitar and drums. So happy to see her getting some love here.
Nancy also gave Eddie Van Halen his 1st acoustic guitar that he used in shows. The story is that they were just hanging out after a show one night and she asked him how he wrote on an acoustic guitar and then used his Frankenstrat to transform it. He said he didn't own an acoustic, so she grabbed one if her own, gave ut to him, and they did some jamming, which Edward used a lot in his later compositions
Nancy is the lead vocalist on the whole song she usually has 2 per album. If you want your socks blown off listen to "Nada One" from Dog and Butterfly. Just listen to the studio/record version. She has only recently started playing it live.
Nancy does the entire lead on this song. People get confused by the video because Ann is mouthing some of the words. There's a fantastic live version video out there from 2002 I'd highly recommend.
I really wish that Ann hadn't mouthed the words during Nancy's lead vocals, leading many to believe that the sisters were singing them together .. Nancy got so few chances to have the vocal spotlight on her, particularly in Heart's big hits, and I actually think it was a bit selfish of Ann to not let people know the great lead here was all Nancy.
You’re right in your description of this song at the end when you say it’s “beautiful”, because above all, that’s what I think every time I hear this masterpiece.
It has to be tough when your sister is beyond amazing, but she is incredible. This is one of my favorite of their songs, and I'm glad Nancy got a chance to shine vocally.
MTV had only existed for 5 short years back then (August 1981). The music videos were umm, basic. It was the end of the 80’s videos really became their own art form, almost separate from the songs at times. The early videos were basically attempts to capture the song live with some simple video tricks, they only had a few tricks. Fall into the water, then reverse the film and they rise up. Reminds me of the Monkees videos Forward & backwards😂
I'd love to hear an interview with you and Heart. Your interviews are atypical and make the artists think about what they may do naturally or without thinking. Always a facinating watch. I suspect Ann Wilson is very deliberate, but no one ever gets past the, "your voice is amazing!" in the interviews Ive seen.
I have seen an interview with Ann hosted by the Professor of Rock. Adam did complement Ann on her amazing, one-of-a-kind voice and her response was a kind of "Ahh, shucks" sort of thing. The real takeaway from that interview was that Ann's voice is as compelling and captivating in the spoken word as it is in song. Such a full, rich and 'lived-in' sound, like Ann has taken the mantra of 'comfortable in my skin' and adapted it for her voice. Someone here in chat suggested interviewing Ann & Nancy. I second that! ❤
Still one of my Favorites by Heart, there were many others of course but the harmonies on this and "Will you be there" just give me the chills. I love it!
Right, tapping utilizes hammer-ons and pull-offs to achieve various effects but, in the case of this song, the sound is absolutely a synth, not a guitar. There are plenty of examples in music video history of members of the band depicted as playing numerous things that they didn't actually play in the recording of their respective music. The members of the band simply need/want to be included in the visuals. We must trust our ears, not our eyes!
When it's used for things like "Eruption", or "Beat It", it's called finger-tapping. But when it's used like in this video, it's called "just fake something for the camera because we don't have a keyboard set up to mime the synths." The continuity of the instruments and vocals in this video was very sketchy.
@@leehanson1416also in Spanish Fly. They’re like harmonic taps. But in this case it does sound like synth and the guitarist is just doing some cool miming.
Your vids are great cause it gives me a new appreciation for songs I've heard a million times. Obviously after every analysis you do I listen to the full song (HQ headphones make a gigantic difference) and it's near to hearing it for the first time again. Thanks for that. It's very much appreciated.
Nancy Wilson was a teenage crush of mine. She was awesome and beautiful for 13 year old me. I think Heart is such a great band, and the Wilson sisters were one of the most talented and beautiful siblings in rock and roll. I still like listening to their music.
I've heard this song thousands of times; it's an incredible piece. I've always had great difficultly in determining the difference in their voices. They're very slightly different, but which is which? I could never tell.
I was obsessed with this song when it was first released. I'd play it over and over (back when we had cassette tapes and you'd have to stop and rewind each time to hear it again). I can't remember any movies I've ever seen using this song, but I've certainly heard it played overhead when I'm walking through a grocery store. It's a nice relaxing song, perfect for that environment. :)
I was in high school late 80s, graduated in 1989 - I see the big hair now and think how ridiculous it was, and how much work to get it there! But I definitely have some hidden pictures of my own done full tilt. The shoulder pads were a nightmare, though - I have linebacker shoulders to start with.
I saw this tour in 1986 in Fort Worth, TX. When this song began, the entire crowd had an energy that was building up to that first vocal fray you described. When Nancy finally gets to that note, the ENTIRE crowd let out a significant sigh of relief. It was breathtaking to know that everyone was waiting for that same note, fray and all.
There still a force in music, when this song came out in the 80s and there record with all these hits was amazing, I was with my girlfriend whom I grew up with, when we broke up Ann and Nancy gave me peace because I so loved my jennifer I then realized you can't posses someone and call them your own after all we are free souls as and free in this country which is a blessing, Ann and Nancy were and are among my favorites from the eightees there music touched many souls including mine, we come here on earth because we have lessons to learn and I learned
Nancy is singing the whole song and Anne is going background. The reason Nancy’s voice sounds gravity is because she had a cold but the record producer loved the sound. She was quoted as saying they wanted her to catch another cold for another song.
Since you asked! This is very much a Nancy song, and one of the few instances she gets to showcase her voice compared to Ann. Also, the video is deceptive; I don’t know if they cut in shots of Ann singing the verses so people weren’t confused that this is indeed Heart, but Ann is primarily is backup on the track, doing the “pre-peat” in later verses, and so on. This is more obvious in the live versions: th-cam.com/video/Eukmzm9iWZ0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CusPZ9mr7fQOLN0r There’s also this behind-the-scenes video of Nancy recording the track: th-cam.com/video/q31-_ufXiQY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pg8IQTt3PnGdw63N Hahaha so sorry for the infodump, but I went down a Heart rabbit hole about a year ago - possibly when you were covering some of their ‘70s work. Just so wild a band can reinvent themselves for an era but still BE themselves through and through, and the Wilsons in particular still being powerhouses in the 21st century. Absolutely incredible performers and songwriters.
@@amydameron3928 for sure. The lead vocal on this is definitely all Nancy, but the use of Ann's harmonies is immaculate. They are both amazing but this is a showcase for Nancy's vocals.
😊YES!! I was coming here to say the same thing! It's a MUST see!! It's stunning, and it will definitely clear up who's singing what on this song for Elizabeth. Nancy's voice is stunning!!🤗
One thing I always liked about this song is they don't do the standard call-and-respond echo that a lead/backup singer will do. They do a respond-and-call instead. For instance when Ann says "Weaker in my eyesight" in the background just before Nancy sings the same line as lead.
I am of the opinion that all first reactions should be the studio version. You can't appreciate how good a live version is until you have something to compare it to. I haven't seen that live version so I will be checking it out but stick with studio versions for reactions.
You can't win as a react channel sometimes. lol If she did that live version then people on the comments would be spamming how she should have done the studio version. lol We often forget we grew up on these bands, and have dissected every part of their content and art. We put unfair expectations on a first reaction. Since we have seen all of it, we pick what we think is best and project it onto the react content creator. I feel the same when people get angry or annoyed that a person doesn't get the full meaning of a song on first listen. As if we haven't heard the songs ourselves 1000s of times. Expecting a react channel to get a song perfect on a first blind listen is just unfair. But people get attached to music and it sort of make them take it personally, even though they shouldn't. lol
Agreed, the Seattle concert is a great display of their sound. Heart did a wonderful performance of These Dreams, Alone, The Battle of Evermore, and others in that concert. On These Dreams it's really clear who is singing what as opposed to the 1980's video.
This song was my introduction to Heart. I was on a 747 in 1986 flying to the US to work for a year, and this track was played in the earphones. I was instantly in love and as soon as I was able, I went out and bought their albums. Been a fan ever since.
I feel like if you put Nancy Wilson in any other band the band members would be doing everything they could to make her the lead vocalist. It just so happens she's in a band with her sister Ann Wilson, who legit is one of the greatest voices of all time. How on earth can you have two singers in one band as good as the Wilson sisters?
Please please watch them sing this "live in Seattle" you will absolutely fall in love with the subtle changes they made, and just how beautiful it is when sung live.
I always liked Heart- never LOVED them, but liked them & saw them live once or twice long ago- but I agree w/ Dog and Butterfly being special. Totally not the kind of song I usually go crazy over, but there's always been something, I have no idea what, that that song simply did for me like no other sweet, ballady type song ever did. Anyway. Just saying.
@@andychisarick6879 Dog & Butterfly is a tremendous song and one I think Elizabeth should analyze (if she hasn't already). Although, she'd probably be in tears by the end of it.
@@andychisarick6879it's the overall structure of the music, the sweetness of the lyrics, and, mostly, it's the exquisite layers of voice soaring, falling, floating, and gently cascading down, softly, sweetly, to the loving embrace of the cool green grasses. At least it's soothing.
@@JoanieBC Your comment here itself has all the makings of a Heart ballad. Exquisitively structured, w/ elegant prose- or is it elegantly structured & exquisite prose? Either way you should put it to music ASAP! In the meantime, & in all seriousness, I suggest you listen to a song called On The Road To Freedom, from an album of the same name by Alvin Lee & Mylon Lefevre. From the early 70s, it's like a lot of Heart's music in that, if it catches you in just the right mood, it can make you cry. Or maybe if it catches you in just the wrong mood. Whatever. Anyway I really would be interested in your opinion, if you care to give it a listen. Thanks! Andy
I’ve recently become a big fan of your reactions, absolutely the best quality reaction videos. But from I’ve seen it just blows my mind that you haven’t reacted to “The Mars Volta “ yet. I seriously don’t understand how they haven’t made it on your channel yet. I guarantee %100 you will love them. Pick anything they do
This is far and away in my top three Heart songs, and I love that we hear Nancy more in it. This is the radio edit, there's a whole other verse they cut out near the beginning in the long version, which I love because this song is so lush and fantastical, and I love to wallow in it for as long as possible.
Nancy Wilson is amazing in her own right. Never gets enough credit. You've got to see the various videos there are out there of her singing this song or just talkng about how she plays the guitar on various songs. Endlessly fascinating.
Did you know that Nancy Wilson was the girl in the car laughing at Judge Reinhold's character while in the pirate suit in Fast Times at Ridgemont High? At the time of filming, Nancy was dating Cameron Crowe - the guy who wrote the screenplay for Fast Times, so she got a cameo. At any rate, I'm still trying to get STEVE PERRY from Journey to be reviewed. He has not been reviewed once. This is the fifth time Heart has been reviewed. They deserve it, but I can't believe no reaction has been done for STEVE PERRY for several years now. Can anyone help me out? I'd like to see Feeling That Way/Anytime reviewed since Gregg Rollie's voice enhances each other.
I'm with Ya on this one, Kurt. But if you want to start with Steve Perry, gotta go back to Lights. Then we can cover the greats like Faithfully and Open Arms. The harmonies on Feeling That Way/Anytime are some of the greatest I have ever heard. Good choice!
The live version of Journey's song "Mother, Father" is a song that Elizabeth should react to. She'd be blown away. If you have a TH-cam channel called The Charismatic Voice, it behooves one to react to Journey. Steve Perry's Voice is as Charismatic as it gets.
@@davidahart2113 I agree with choosing 'Mother, Father'. I don't know if it is true or not, but I once heard that Perry's vocals on the album cut were done first take, only take.
These Dreams was written by Bernie Taupin and originally offered to Stevie Nicks. Nancy had to work hard to persuade the band to record it and for her to sing the lead vocals.
You know this song because it's written in everyone's DNA. These have to be the longest stretches I've seen Elizabeth let a song run, and it doesn't surprise me that this is the song.
This brings back so many memories of my high school years. I think I was a junior or senior when this came out. I distinctly remember one of my friends going to see Heart in concert after this album came out. Los Angeles, mid-80s, the hair, the clothes and then this song shows up out of nowhere. So different from anything we had heard from Anne and Nancy before or since. The day after the concert, my friend brought in a glossy, concert book to 5th period. I wasn't the only one who was jealous as we pored over every single page. Good times.
If a person can't fall in love with the Wilson sisters vocals there's something wrong with their ears and heart. Fantastic, fabulous all the way. Ever since the first album. Personal favourite for me after all these decades is---- Magic Man.
I used to know a long time member of the group Heart and he told me that the members of the band would joke/mess around with Ann because the first Heart single to ever go to #1 was this song and it is Nancy singing instead of Ann.
So excited. Been waiting a long time for You to come back to Heart. Especially breaking down Nancy's turn. Your breakdowns of Heart are UNDOUBTEDLY my FAVORITES. Thank You!
I heard that when this was recorded, Nancy had a bit of a cold and it added to the gravely-ness. Sounded like Nancy didn't like this take, but everyone else loved it
the guitar technique is called tapped harmonics. You have to tap exactly 12 frets above the fretted notes. You can also pluck the notes with the ringfinger while touching the strings lightly with the tip of the index finger 12 frets above. That technique was developed by Lenny Breau and is often used by Tommy Emmanuel. If you alternate between fretted notes and harmonics it is called harp harmonics.
One Heart song that features Nancy as the lead vocalist with Ann as her back-up. It's almost hard to distinguish Nancy's voice from Ann's. Nancy had a cold during recording and tried to re-record, but the first recording was the best.
I know people stole my thunder already, but YES, Nancy famously had a cold the day she recorded this. In fact, she hated the scratchiness of her voice, but the band LOVED it. So they kept it in. Also, Queensryche Unplugged PLEASE! It's been too long since you've reacted to Geoff Tate. I recommend 'The Killing Words.'
My mom and I used to sing Amazing Grace in harmony and our voices were so similar and in sync I swear it was like I could feel her voice bouncing around in my own head and chest when we sang together. It was weird and wonderful and I miss singing with her with all my heart. (no pun intended)
The raspy moments are Nancy, the video is a little misleading, if you check out the live version in Seattle from 2002 you'll see. Nancy does lead vocals on a really good song called Stranded also.
Nancy Is singing lead on this track. She was sick on this day in studio and did not like this take {that vocal fry}. She wanted to rerecord it but EVERYONE said HELL NO and it became their first #1 hit.
I saw Heart live in Penticton several years ago. An absolutely amazing experience. Ann and Nancy are absolute forces of nature when it comes to music. I firmly believe that Ann Wilson is the greatest rock vocalist of all time. I'm curious as to what your take would be on The Tea Party. Specifically Heaven Coming Down. Quite an amazingly unique voice.
These power ballads were my first time hearing Heart back in the 80’s wasn’t until I moved to the US and listened to classic rock stations I heard their stuff from the 70’s which totally rocks Oooooooh BARRACUDA🎸
Barracuda is on my all time favourite compositions and performances. I have it on the same playlist as stuff by the likes of Nat King Cole, TMBG, Albert King, Tchaïkovski, Shostakovich, The Stones... and many more of the greatest composers and performers.
When I was a teen in the 80s, "These Dreams" was a huge hit on the radio and at dances. Reports indicate that Nancy recorded this song with a cold, which gave her voice a wonderful gravel quality. Thankks for the nostalgia and analysis. This is perhaps the best rock ballad of all rime.
Nancy sings lead throughout. The rasp in here voice is mainly because she had a cold when she sang on this take. She tried several more takes later on, but could never match this version, so they kept it. Going to see Heart this March in Sacramento, first time in almost 50 years for me, very excited! And if you to hear more from great female voices, more songs from The Warning would be appreciated. They released a new album in June, and they are breaking all over the world. They just toured Europe a few months back and just announced 3 shows in Brazil next year. And I don't believe you have reacted to a song where Paulina sings the lead; her vocals on "23" will amaze you.
From Song Facts. Nancy Wilson sang lead on this track. Her sister Ann typically handled lead vocals, but when they heard the demo the group thought it suited Nancy's voice. Nancy had a nasty cold when she first recorded her vocals, but their producer Ron Nevison liked some of the raspiness. When Nancy was feeling better, they recorded more takes in her healthy voice, with Nancy doing her best to re-create the raspy parts Nevison liked.
Nancy had a head cold while recording the song, so those effects you mentioned were probably a side effect of her congestion. After she got better, she tried to re-record the song. But she couldn't duplicate the effects. So the producers opted to keep the original recording.
Elizabeth, I greatly enjoy your channel. It is such a joy to see your reactions to hearing a lot of this music for the first time. I also greatly appreciate the vocal analysis. Being a vocalist myself, though admittedly not the greatest, I've been taking pointers from your analyses in order to improve. Thank you so much. I love this song... but I didn't know until watching this very video that the official music video that was utilized as source material, which undoubtedly was played on MTV hundreds of times, skips an entire verse. There is a second verse before the first chorus on the album version, and having never actually seen the official music video before, it was very noticeable, not to mention quite jarring, to me. It's only another 25 seconds... it makes no sense to cut it out when there is a very atmospheric transition that takes place Verse 1 and Verse 2 before going into the first chorus, and I feel this particular edit of the song suffers on account of its absence. If anyone is interested in hearing the missing part, I found a video of the "unsullied by MTV or the short sighted Capitol Records execs who thought that 4 minutes 15 seconds is too long for a successful single " version (a.k.a. the album version), and put the link below. th-cam.com/video/d9q7KnvVnrM/w-d-xo.html I was very intrigued to learn that this song was co-written by Bernie Taupin (who wrote all of Elton John's best stuff), and it was originally intended for and offered to Stevie Nicks, who had no interest in recording it. Thank goodness the Wilson sisters and their bandmates had the good sense that Stevie lacked in that moment, and to be honest, even though I like Stevie Nicks, I don't think she really could have done this song as well as Nancy and Ann do.
The guitar technique is just called tapping. And it does kind of have a carbonated quality to it in this context. Usually it's more Eddie Van Halen and less Schweppes effervescence. And no, getting your electric guitars wet will not electrocute you. It's a passive signal with very low power. With that said it can really damage one. Not just with the wood expanding and contracting, but you can corrode the components.
There is an excellent youtube video named “Nancy In the Studio These Dreams ‘85” which shows Nancy’s recording session for this song. Looks like it was informally recorded on VHS tape by people at the studio. Lots of multiple takes of different parts of the song, followed by her listening to the playback. The video and sound does go out of synch as the tape goes on, but still amazing to see.
One of the best singers in the world, and it was my favourite go to songs for when going through a break up , which wasn’t that often but we all love to strong and deep. Nancy Wilson had a strong cold when they first recorded this song, and when they went to go to re-record it but they couldn’t get the sound again so they went for the first recording. Thank you the Professor of Rock.
This song always makes me want to write D&D adventures. Probably because that's what I was up to back in the days that this was on heavy radio rotation.
My girlfriend at the time had Michael Hutchins andVince Niel, I had Nancy Wilson. All fair, she's still fetching. Please do their version of Battle of Evermore for them belting out together.

Heard Nancy herself say exactly that in an interview
This
Nancy also made most of, if not all, of the music in Almost Famous.
@@jimmybuttons7125along with Cameron Crowe, Peter Frampton and Mike McCready
That is fantastic!
This is a Nancy song. Here, Ann is doing harmonys. Love love love 💕 it !!!
My godmother passed away from covid during the pandemic. Heart was one of her very favorite bands. Her birthday is today, October 8th. What are the chances of that! Thanks for unknowingly picking the perfect group for today review!
I’m so sorry for you loss 😢

Sorry for Your Loss! 💔😢🥀
@@neilpatrickhairless amen
In her own right? She's a beast! Ever since I was a kid and learning the guitar (Heart riffs from the 70s) in the guitar community, she's always been knows as a phenomenal guitarist. She's never been one of those names that's like, she's pretty good at guitar ... for a girl ... No, just, 'She's a bad ass on guitar.
@@neilpatrickhairless Wait.. what?
@@SubCultureMEDIAHilbert I meant as a vocalist. Don’t get it twisted. Pretty girl? Heart only did “sexy look” videos in the 80’s because they were told they had to. I think of them as anything but just their looks. Nancy is more than just a guitar god, too, that’s all. She rates, period.
Did you realize you’ve sometimes been reacting to three Wilson sisters? Ann and Nancy have an older sister named Lynn. She provided backup vocals on some songs, participated in live performances and also in costume design.
but this one uses Nancy.
Wow, I never knew about Lynn. Thanks for the info!
@@kenkonwick6660 I remember this story! Have you heard “4 Edward”? Nancy wrote it, it’s beautiful
@laurahigdon4741 yes I did, ty fir reminding me of it
Tell Lita ford women can't play guitars.
I wish Nancy would have sang a few more songs she has a beautiful voice herself.
Yep! "Alive in Seattle".
The "Live in Seattle" performance is excellent. I would also highly recommend it.
And is more polished but Nancy is more breathy and gravely at times
I really wish that Ann hadn't mouthed the words during Nancy's lead vocals, leading many to believe that the sisters were singing them together .. Nancy got so few chances to have the vocal spotlight on her, particularly in Heart's big hits, and I actually think it was a bit selfish of Ann to not let people know the great lead here was all Nancy.
You’re right in your description of this song at the end when you say it’s “beautiful”, because above all, that’s what I think every time I hear this masterpiece.
I always thought Nancy never got enough credit for her amazing vocals.
It has to be tough when your sister is beyond amazing, but she is incredible. This is one of my favorite of their songs, and I'm glad Nancy got a chance to shine vocally.
The only reason Nancy is such an underrated vocalist is that she normally sings beside her sister, the almighty powerhouse! Both are phenomenal...
Nancy is fantastic 100%🤟💙
If Nancy had been in any other band she would have been the lead singer for sure!
A fantastic guitarist as well. Plus, she brought sex appeal to the band.
You should watch a live version. Nancy always delivers. ❤
This music video is the most 80s thing of all time and I love it.
I can't get over all the guitars being played when you can only hear synths playing lol
Reminds me of the Monkees videos Forward & backwards😂
like my high school years poked me in the shoulder and said “remember me?”
Can't get more '80s than those shoulder pads!
I used to hear this song all the time from a commercial in the early 2000s. It was a part of the ultimate love song collection. Miss childhood
Indeed.
Still one of my Favorites by Heart, there were many others of course but the harmonies on this and "Will you be there" just give me the chills. I love it!
The "raindrop' effect on the guitar is called finger-tapping. Thanks for looking at this iconic band.
If not synth, likely artificial harmonics, like the short solo in "Dance the Night Away" by Van Halen.
@@leehanson1416also in Spanish Fly. They’re like harmonic taps. But in this case it does sound like synth and the guitarist is just doing some cool miming.
It's a sequencer playing a synth mimicking a 'pizzicato' -string sound ( violin ) mixed with a marimba (I think)....
Your vids are great cause it gives me a new appreciation for songs I've heard a million times. Obviously after every analysis you do I listen to the full song (HQ headphones make a gigantic difference) and it's near to hearing it for the first time again. Thanks for that. It's very much appreciated.
Nancy Wilson is a rock goddess, with a wonderful voice, in her own right, and a tremendously under appreciated guitarist. He’s the total package.
I agree she is very underappreciated as a guitarist
She's the second best singer in Heart and probably about the 5th best female rock singer overall.
Nancy Wilson was a teenage crush of mine. She was awesome and beautiful for 13 year old me. I think Heart is such a great band, and the Wilson sisters were one of the most talented and beautiful siblings in rock and roll. I still like listening to their music.
@@rolltiderman timeless music
@@rolltiderman I was 15 when this song came out and my wall was covered with Nancy posters (and Lita Ford and Dorro Pesch)
I've heard this song thousands of times; it's an incredible piece. I've always had great difficultly in determining the difference in their voices. They're very slightly different, but which is which? I could never tell.
I just wanted to mention how I appreciate seeing your cheerful smile. It always cheers me up.
Same🤟🤟
I was obsessed with this song when it was first released. :)
Shoulder Pads and Paul Mitchell's 'Freeze and Shine' hairspray....definitely the mid 80's.
I was in high school late 80s, graduated in 1989 - I see the big hair now and think how ridiculous it was, and how much work to get it there! But I definitely have some hidden pictures of my own done full tilt. The shoulder pads were a nightmare, though - I have linebacker shoulders to start with.
Us poor girls used Aqua Net Extra Super Hold, lol.
The best female fronted band in rock! Ann&Nancy.
I always loved this song... and watching the video is a flashback to the 80s. The 80s and 90s were some amazing decades to grow up in.
Love Nancy's voice!
Did you mean gravelly, not gravity?
Since you asked! This is very much a Nancy song, and one of the few instances she gets to showcase her voice compared to Ann. Also, the video is deceptive; I don’t know if they cut in shots of Ann singing the verses so people weren’t confused that this is indeed Heart, but Ann is primarily is backup on the track, doing the “pre-peat” in later verses, and so on. This is more obvious in the live versions: th-cam.com/video/Eukmzm9iWZ0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CusPZ9mr7fQOLN0r
There’s also this behind-the-scenes video of Nancy recording the track: th-cam.com/video/q31-_ufXiQY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pg8IQTt3PnGdw63N
Hahaha so sorry for the infodump, but I went down a Heart rabbit hole about a year ago - possibly when you were covering some of their ‘70s work. Just so wild a band can reinvent themselves for an era but still BE themselves through and through, and the Wilsons in particular still being powerhouses in the 21st century. Absolutely incredible performers and songwriters.
The Live in Seattle concert from 2002 version of this song is absolutely stellar and I actually like it much more than the video and album version.
A must see and will clear up who's singing what. Love this version more than og too.
Ann sings with perfection in mind... Nancy sings with feeling in mind...that's the difference I hear and have for almost 40yrs. Love Heart!!
One thing I always liked about this song is they don't do the standard call-and-respond echo that a lead/backup singer will do. They do a respond-and-call instead. For instance when Ann says "Weaker in my eyesight" in the background just before Nancy sings the same line as lead.
I have always thought of this as, “Fore Shadowing”.. Ann is giving the next line away..
Yes, it's Nancy, she has a great voice and the two together is amazing.
What a missed opportunity!! The live Seattle video shows what Nancy can do. Beautiful and underappreciated voice. One of my absolute faves.
The version of Alone from this show is amazing as well!
Nancy Wilson has always been so under-rated as a singer. She's got a fantastic voice and this is one of my favourite Heart tracks.
This song was my introduction to Heart. I was on a 747 in 1986 flying to the US to work for a year, and this track was played in the earphones. I was instantly in love and as soon as I was able, I went out and bought their albums. Been a fan ever since.
Fun fact - this was their first #1 hit which is ironic since Nancy is the lead and Anne is the back-up.
I always wondered if Ann was a little jealous that Nancy had a number one hit, but then a couple years later, Ann got her number one!
Alone, I stand by the idea that Heart's version of Alone, is the power ballad perfected.
That's Nancy doing the lead vocals anns in there as well, beautiful, this is a beautiful song
"Dog & Butterfly" and "Dreamboat Annie" and this song are what made me love Heart.
@@andychisarick6879
Dog & Butterfly is a tremendous song and one I think Elizabeth should analyze (if she hasn't already). Although, she'd probably be in tears by the end of it.
I really love Nancy’s harmonies on the chorus, especially on the last “butterfly”!
I guarantee
%100 you will love them.
Steve perry definitely
The live version of Journey's song "Mother, Father" is a song that Elizabeth should react to. She'd be blown away.
If you have a TH-cam channel called The Charismatic Voice, it behooves one to react to Journey. Steve Perry's Voice is as Charismatic as it gets.
She hasn't done Journey yet? Wow. Good call out - you can pick a dozen songs off the bat. Still They Ride would probably be my top choice.
Lita Ford is another rock lady. She did a duet with Ozzy. The means of the song is close my eyes forever.
My favorite Lita song is the song "Lisa" she wrote for her Mom.
@@neilpatrickhairless Lisa always brings me to tears.
One of my favorite Heart songs is "Dog and Butterfly." Makes me cry every time. If you haven't already listened to it you should.
This is the song that brought Heart back into the mainstream in the 80s. "Alone" solidified it.
I used to know a long time member of the group Heart and he told me that the members of the band would joke/mess around with Ann because the first Heart single to ever go to #1 was this song and it is Nancy singing instead of Ann.
And, not written by Heart.
@@privatename123yes written by Bernie Taupin who is the song writer paired with Elton John.
I suggest you compare this to the 2002 Heart - These Dreams (Live In Seattle) Nancy sings lead on this sound.
So excited. Been waiting a long time for You to come back to Heart. Especially breaking down Nancy's turn. Your breakdowns of Heart are UNDOUBTEDLY my FAVORITES. Thank You!
This is one of those songs that gives me chills.
Hands down the best female rock vocalist ever and one of the best rock vocalists. Majestic voice.
And Nancy Wilson sang it with a cold. Ann Wilson sang backup in this one!
Yes, Nancy is the primary vocalist in this song.
Ann Wilson, one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time 🎉definitely my favourite female singer
Also, Nancy had a cold when she recorded this from what I remember back in the 80's. Also, also, we would kill to achieve hair this epic!!!😂
I saw this concert live in the Budokan (Tokyo) when I was stationed there with the US Army. Awesome show, and Ann's voice has always been amazing.
I heard that when this was recorded, Nancy had a bit of a cold and it added to the gravely-ness. Sounded like Nancy didn't like this take, but everyone else loved it
I saw them on that tour. They sound even better live. They played so many songs that night. It was amazing.
the guitar technique is called tapped harmonics.
Nancy had a cold during recording and tried to re-record, but the first recording was the best.
yep and the record company said they prefered her voice with the cold
You have to watch the live in Seattle version!
Nancy Is singing lead on this track. She was sick on this day in studio and did not like this take {that vocal fry}. She wanted to rerecord it but EVERYONE said HELL NO and it became their first #1 hit.
Oooh..a chance to hear Nancy! This will be great. #WeneedNancy!

@@suzannejane1035 I like that one, too!
These power ballads were my first time hearing Heart back in the 80’s wasn’t until I moved to the US and listened to classic rock stations I heard their stuff from the 70’s which totally rocks
Oooooooh BARRACUDA🎸
Barracuda is on my all time favourite compositions and performances. I have it on the same playlist as stuff by the likes of Nat King Cole, TMBG, Albert King, Tchaïkovski, Shostakovich, The Stones... and many more of the greatest composers and performers.
When I was a teen in the 80s, "These Dreams" was a huge hit on the radio and at dances. Reports indicate that Nancy recorded this song with a cold, which gave her voice a wonderful gravel quality. Thankks for the nostalgia and analysis. This is perhaps the best rock ballad of all rime.
Ann and Nancy had another band in the 90s called the Lovemongers and Nancy has solo work, both are excellent.
Every time I hear that song, I’d get goosebumps all over! Still gets it more than 40 years later! ❤
The raindrops were finger taps from guitarist Howard Leese - who was originally the main keyboardist for the group.
Nancy had a head cold while recording the song, so those effects you mentioned were probably a side effect of her congestion. After she got better, she tried to re-record the song. But she couldn't duplicate the effects. So the producers opted to keep the original recording.
I was lucky enough to see them in concert shortly before the tour was cancelled. They're so talented!

I was very intrigued to learn that this song was co-written by Bernie Taupin (who wrote all of Elton John's best stuff), and it was originally intended for and offered to Stevie Nicks, who had no interest in recording it.
Love this song. I believe Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics.
Absolutely!❤
I'd like to hear Stevie do it.
Watch the live version from Seattle. Ann is an incredible talent but Nancy has a beautiful voice too.
This song always makes me want to write D&D adventures. Probably because that's what I was up to back in the days that this was on heavy radio rotation.
Heart is an all time fave. Adore them across all their time periods. They deserve so much more attention than they get
My girlfriend at the time had Michael Hutchins andVince Niel, I had Nancy Wilson. All fair, she's still fetching. Please do their version of Battle of Evermore for them belting out together.
Nancy has aged a lot better than the other 2....esp Michael. Lol agreed with Battle.
@@shegocrazy yes! I’ve been hoping for battle of evermore, too!
