When I do the "NG" exercise my voice cuts off at the mid pitch. When I do the exercise covering the mouth, the sound goes up and down. I'm in real bad shape. Why does this happen?
It did. there's still a way to go. I had surgery to remove lesions from my vocal cords a couple of years ago and this has affected my speaking and singing voice, making them hoarse and weak. At the time I was provided with very brief speech therapy session and a printed sheet describing similar exercises, but I'm sorry to say I let things lapse. In my book, nothing beats imitation and I really like the way you explain these drills, so I am determined to give my voice another chance to improve and it seems likely that your exercises will be very beneficial. Thank you.
It's interesting how i can sing for hours without straining my voice but just 5 minutes of reading aloud strangles me. I guess it's because I don't know how to supporty speaking by my chest and uses my throat instead.
Thank you so much for you contribution for maintaining healthy vocals Katarina. I just came from a doctor with diagnosis of a "stomach acid" for the loss of my voice. It was a blessing to come across with you on the TH-cam. Thank you again.
Hello, I am a teacher with more than 7 classes a day. I can really feel the strain in my throat when I speak during my last class. Thank you so much for making this video.
I lost my speech over 2 months. All tests for stroke, EMG came back normal. They are baffled. I can feel my soft palate isn't working properly. I cannot blow out through mouth only - such as whistling. I am going through all of your videos so I can strengthen my soft palate. Thank you for all you do - I am hoping they can figure out my issue soon!
While repeating the exercises about 4 times my voice started to feel a bit strained, but after finishing the whole exercise my voice went from a 4/10 to a 7/10 and it made speaking A LOT easier. Love your videos since it includes exercises that are easy to follow along.
Thank you for your very kind words. I am very happy to hear that you are finding my videos helpful. That was my intent when I post these videos - help people who deal with MTD.
Wow thank you for this video and tips!!🙏😊 I'm a singer myself, often watching your videos to remind myself of all these great tools you're giving us... I already knew the first two exercises, but the third one is new and I absolutely love it!! Thank you!!🙏 Keep making these great videos💖🤗
Thank you for uploading videos like these, Ms. Katarina.. I really appreciate it. I will be needing the tips from your videos similar to this one because my new job will require me to use my voice non-stop for 8 hours a day, 5x a week, so goodluck to my voice and to me. 😅😂 but thanks again.. ☺️🙏🏾
I am happy to hear that you are finding my videos helpful. I suggest that you "steal" a few minutes here and there to rest your voice or do something for your voice that can release tension. I wish you all the best.
Thank you again, Katarina. Your exercises are helping and I plan on signing up for your monthly service. Meanwhile, a question...and I realize it may be hard to answer, depending on one's exact condition. But let me say I'm a dedicated singer-songwriter and I have a whopping case of MTD, for sure. I have MTD in spite of being a well trained singer. I think it is my speaking voice that is the culprit, not necessarily my singing. . My question is, how many times per day should I do these exercises to encourage healing? All the best to you!
It is very individual how often. Everyone needs something else. It also depends on the type of exercise and whether it is beneficial to the person. But generally speaking (without knowing any details about you), the more frequent short sessions (a few minutes long) throughout the day, the better. If you found an exercise that feels really good because it can release tension (which feels good), why wouldn't you do it several times a day? But of course, if you are a busy person and you may not be able to dedicate the time, then do as much as you can (if it's only a few minutes a day, then that's what you can do but of course, the progress will be slower).
Hi Katarina. Thank you very much for your very efficient videos!!I feel big tension while speak or sing. Also I have some teeth grinding even day time. And I've noticed that often I press my jaws in a bite to to hard. Can you please tell me more about it and how to reliese this tension. My thought hurts when I speak and sing..and the voice is squeaky when aspecially I am worrying. Thank you very much!
Sorry to hear about your vocal troubles. Regarding teeth grinding, consult a dentist, they may have good advice or they can even create a night guard to prevent you from grinding your teeth. Regarding the tension in your jaw, becoming aware of it and jaw massage should progressively help. But I feel that there is more to your problem than that. I highly recommend that you have your voice assessed by a laryngologist so that you know what is going on at the level of the vocal folds. Once you know, you can then receive appropriate care that you deserve.
Thank you Katrina for your video. It’s really helpful. I am from India and working as a teacher. I’m using portable mic for taking classes. The classes last for 7 continuous hours in a day sometimes. My problem is I feel pain on the sides of my stomach ( hope it’s lungs) during my speech. Can I solve this problem practising this exercise? Please help me.
I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing pain when speaking. These exercises will not help with pain in your torso. I would try some breathing or postural exercises to lessen the effort in these muscles.
Good question! When you are sustaining the sounds, try to do it on one breath but you don't need to break records. When you are doing sirens, breathe in as needed.
SUper useful video! I do the NG one as a warm up before gigs, but I will definitely include the motor and man over the mouth ones from now on.. Thanks for sharing!
Hello Mam ..may be due to over singing or singing with not so good sound monitoring i am now having problem hitting high note... Its like im really singing good in lower or mid Octave but becomes vrry thin or shaky in high octave . What might be the reason amd solution. Could you please help me. I've very imp song recording next week
Sorry to hear about your vocal troubles. There can be numerous reasons for your vocal problem. Maybe it's an acute problem after overworking your voice and after four days (you left this comment 4 days ago) your voice is back to normal. How is your voice feeling today?
I’ve found my neck muscles getting tight when talking sometimes and have a hoarse voice quite often if not all the time I also feel like I have a dry mouth and postnasal drip a lot so I need to go and get it checked with my gp but after doing these exercises I find it easier to talk on my muscles but my voice sounds quite hoarse afterwards is this something that would be normal?
If your voice sounds hoarse after doing vocal exercise, then you are probably not doing them in the way they are intended to be. If you are dealing with voice issues, I suggest that you have your voice checked by a laryngologist and then maybe you will be recommended voice therapy. Working with a voice therapist can be helpful in finding the "right" way to do vocal exercises.
When I do the "NG" exercise my voice cuts off at the mid pitch. When I do the exercise covering the mouth, the sound goes up and down. I'm in real bad shape. Why does this happen?
It is very common for the voice to cut off at mid pitch if this is your first time doing it. This is a skill that needs to be practiced. Basically, what is happening, there is a switch in the mechanism of making different sound of different pitches and there is a specific place in the range where this happens. "Push" less or use less air when going through this point. For the third exercise, use less breath/air to make the sound. By covering your mouth, you may be creating too much back pressure that affects the length of the vocal folds and changes the pitch. I hope this helps.
Coughing means that you are using too much effort. Ease on the air you are using as well as on the muscle effort you use to produce the sound. In your case, less is better. You seem to be trying too hard.
Very useful exercises thank you Katarina madam. How to come out from whispering voice to normal voice ? Please make a video on this. This is useful for so many people. Also upload breathing exercises. Thank you madam.
I think it is vocal issue, some times automatically it is going into whispering, morning times I am able to speak normally some times during the day while speaking it is going to whispering without my control.
@@healthyvoicetips I mean I'm following the rules of breath work 🤷. However I've recently found one thing that's helpful me massively and it's a really cool vocal hack I don't see much of here on TH-cam. I need to buck up the courage to start TH-cam and talk about it. Thanks for the response
Valerie, for NG the airflow comes only through the nose. You are right that my mouth is open but I use only nasal resonance (airflow) for this exercise. Great question.
@@healthyvoicetips excellent, thank you! And I was making the higher pitch noise through more nasal and head voice if that’s correct as well? I think I was on the right path because I didn’t get pain :)
Thank you for watching. Did your voice feel better after these exercises? Let me know.

That would be an interesting question to investigate. You may be onto something.
i'm exactly the same! it's so frustrating..
i have the same issue.
Omg same here❤
These simple, quick exercises really helped me immediately: my voice sounds stronger, louder, clearer, less raspy, less throat scratchy.

Hi! Thanks for the helpful and good explained Video! You're a great Teacher!
I have a Question: Why cover the Mouth with a Hand and not just close it?
You still want some air to go through. You don't want completely to stop the air.
@@healthyvoicetips Thanks, now I understand.... (-;
Hello mam can you make a video to correct vocal stiffness due to singing
These three exercises could help with that too.

Too much back pressure. Ease on the pressure you apply with your hand over the mouth. That should help.
Very helpful
