Great stuff Brian. Getting Dave Coleman on your channel plus doing a 2024 video review with the soft top BBR option ( even though you don't love the Recarro seats ) was really interesting on those canyon roads ! I think these changes have got me to move off the fence & sell the 2016 MX-5 soft top with the Brembo / BBS wheels. Going to the Mazda dealer to talk. 😎
Wait wait wait - This is THE Dave Coleman of Sport Compact Car magazine?? This guy is an absolute legend. I used to nerd out SO MUCH every time he got a technical article or teardown in that magazine. Awesome stuff, Brian.
Same here! I was just casually scrolling through TH-cam and immediately stopped and clicked as soon as I saw the name. An absolute legend. I'm 41 now and luckily kept most of my SCC magazines, and now share these treasures with my 15 year old son. So glad I stumbled upon this!

If you ever wanted to know why the Miata is so iconic and fun to drive ... just look at how much effort they put into the smallest of inputs into the steering, diff, etc. This is why this car is so much fun and why I love mine. Thanks Mazda!
Agreed. It was interesting when he said this is an old car, and it is by modern car turnover standards, and how they can focus on fine tuning it. Makes total sense.
yeah same. "...oh Dave. Don't stop. Go deep...in detail. Ah yeah, tell me about how you play with toe-in and limited slip lock-up. You don't need dampening on the steering rack..."
My earliest recollections of Dave Coleman were in my mid-late teens in the mid 90s. Used to search the store shelves for the latest copy of Sport Compact Car every month, until I got my own subscription for years. The technical and editorial style between Dave, Josh J and Mike Kojima featuring exhaustive dyno based product comparisons, realistic project cars and intelligent, informative, humorous articles (The Dave Point/Angle) were the pinnacle of automotive journalism to me. Also can't forget Dave basically starting the (rattle can) flat black paint job that began the diy and later, the OEM trend. Glad to see him doing well decades later (time really lays rubber!) and still hanging with Mazda!👍

YES! My first Miata was a brand new 2001 SE BRG with the Nardi package and removable hard top. I’ve owned 5 more Miatas since then, currently own a Polymetal grey ‘21 RF Club BBR. Love it!
This is the problem with these requests.. I had a cloth interior '94, so my dream ND would be BRG with black leather. But I can totally understand wanting tan!
Mr Coleman. I would use adaptive cruise control on a manual Miata. I don’t care what anyone else says. Also bring better colors and a classic red. Also get rid of shark fin
I'm planning to buy a ND3 near the end of its run and I'd definitely buy that color scheme, although I'd prefer a slightly darker brown rather than tan, which doesn't wear as well since it's so light.

This is brilliant! I love the details which were shared around the diff and its effect on transitions. Thank you for recording and sharing! FWIW I have been able to signifiicantly improve steering return on my ND1 with lower caster and a wider track / more positive scrub radius (from wheels with reduced offset / spacers).

I got a 2024 ND3 Homura in May.Its so much nicer to drive than my 2021 ND2.I don't track it or anything due to being 60.Get one if you can.You won't regret it at all.
These improvements, do they relate only to the LSD+Bielshein top of the range model? Was the base model (no lsd, regular shocks) also re-tuned? Do all grades received the same settings?
jesus christ. i'm saving this video for future reference, even if this car is 2 generations ahead of mine. if Dave Coleman comes to Montreal, i'm paying for all his beverages just to listen to him talk about miatas all night long.

Why doesn't G-Vectoring control work on a rear wheel drive car? Reducing the torque shifts load to the front wheels regardless, so I thought it'd improve the contact patch and provide sharper steering.
Well, gee, if I knew Coleman was dissatisfied with the ND2's steering and limited slip differential, I might have waited for the '24 ND3 before buying a 2023. Not that I'm dissatisfied with the car I have...
Used to have GT86 & BRZ now in an i20N (UK based). Does the Miata have the same low COG feeling of the twins or is it impossible to have that feeling without a flat engine? I ask as i used to love that low COG feeling of my old cars and worried that if i get an MX5 it will feel too floppy...
Dave Coleman, if you read this would LOVE it if you can jump on a thread on miata forum called "New ND3 owner, what's the first mod you'd do to improve steering feel & turn-in?" and share your tips on setup for those crazy steering feedback maximalists among us. 😂
Some of this is well over my head, but some interesting points. First of all, the fact that this is an "old car" means they know it extremely well, and can continue to sweat and refine details to make it even better. The fact that they care enough to sweat the details and continue to refine is impressive. Not sure how many other car makers are this fastidious.
Mr Dave Coleman doesn't exactly look small. Why make the ND so small that people over 8'3 don't fit? And why is a Mazda 3 that big that 9' is not a problem? Really puzzled...
Who authorized the awful hump in the passenger side floor? Whose idea was it not to put a real glovebox? Who decided on the terrible color selection? Don't even get me started on the god-awful cupholders. Why does everybody have to put lowering springs after they buy it. After all these decades this car is going in the wrong direction.
Sorry, but I've never heard of Dave Coleman. I hope he enjoys his new MX5. He doesn't look like the type that would drive a car like this. Maybe he should buy something less aggressive, perhaps a KIA Soul?

That's great, Mr

Why doesn't G-Vectoring control work on a rear wheel drive car? Reducing the torque shifts load to the front wheels regardless, so I thought it'd improve the contact patch and provide sharper steering.
I don't know the specific answer to that question, but I suspect that GVC has been developed for the FWD/AWD-only Mazdas.
Well, gee, if I knew Coleman was dissatisfied with the ND2's steering and limited slip differential, I might have waited for the '24 ND3 before buying a 2023. Not that I'm dissatisfied with the car I have...
So is the Asemetric lsd noticeable. Because that will determine me buying one of these. Otherwise its too dangerous on the twisties
If you think an MX-5 is dangerous in any corner, you shouldn’t go anywhere near an automobile.

Nothing to worry about. The orientation of the engine has little to do with CG. That’s a lot of marketing nonsense repeated by journalists.

not really, the whole pont of the mx5 was that it was upscalable in so many ways :)

But what is going on with the Hayabusa Miata??? We all need to know!
Could someone please help add the caption for this video?
Just wondering, is it possible to swap a Nd3 steering column into a ND2?
Why?
@@BrianMakse So we ND2 owners can enjoy the improvement of steering without having to buy a new ND3🤣
@@starikki even if you could swap it in, you aren’t getting the different software tune to go with it
