The Joy of Driving: Supercharged Mazda MX-5 Adventure | Henry Catchpole - The Driver’s Seat

  • What a breath of fresh air! In this episode, Henry Catchpole drives a supercharged Mazda MX-5 from renowned tuners BBR GTi. Proving that fast fun can still be affordable in this age of mega-expensive hypercars and restomods, Hagerty heads to some incredible roads in Wales that suit the little Mazda perfectly.
Producing 250bhp and 220lb ft of torque, the Stage 2 Supercharger kit makes a palpable difference to the ND generation Mazda (2015-19 model years), dropping the 0-60mph time to 5.1 seconds. This particular car also has a suspension upgrade with Koni dampers, new OZ Ultraleggera wheels and a bigger brake kit.
The end result is a fabulous enhancement of everything that makes the standard MX-5 great. It still feels nicely useable (the way it fits so neatly on these narrow roads is a case in point), the linearity of the power delivery is maintained and the gearshift remains a delight at any speed, but when you find the right situation you have performance that feels in a very different league.
We also look at the reasons driving with the roof down can actually be good for you. A study (albeit with a fairly small sample size) carried out at Cranfield University in association with FIAT has put some numbers to the fluctuations in things like happiness and stress when you drive with the top down. The results seems conclusive - especially when delivered by someone wearing a Tweed waistcoat and a spotty bowtie.
We hope you enjoy the episode - let us know in the comments down below if there are other rivals to the MX-5 that you would like us to try. @arekb5951 I've been saying it for years to people who prefer big heavy machines that go fast when you mash the throttle on the motorway like saloons or SUVs, it's okay to like that but that's not proper driving enjoyment... that's just a small part of the driving experience.

I'm in Australia and I've embarked on my de rigeur mid-life crisis (who am I kidding... it's an end of life crisis - I'm 73). I've bought a brand new bog standard MX5 (Deep Crystal Blue Mica, hard-top, BBS wheels) which is expected in the country in mid-September. Can't wait to get in it, run the top down, don a baseball cap (also de rigeur) and head off down some of Victoria's best roads.
As usual Hagerty and Henry, 11 out of 10 for the quality of the video.

Going through a sudden change in weather conditions on a mountain road and experiencing drops in temperature around you is one of those things you don't even know about until you drive in the mountains with the top down. You can actually feel different pockets of atmosphere changing around you on a winding road, where sudden gusts of chilly air wash over you as you head downhill in a tree covered valley, only to crest a summit moments later with clear and sunny skies above. I imagine it's what birds experience in flight and it's about as close as you can get to that feeling on four wheels, and it's something you won't experience in a car with a fixed roof no matter how many of the windows you roll down in an attempt to pretend it's a convertible. Right now, my attainable dream car is an NC2 (MY '09-12) Miata PRHT with upgraded wheels, tires, suspension, and brakes, followed by intake, exhaust, and finally a supercharger. The 3rd generation is me enough to have modem features and an available hard top but old enough to be affordable. Those specific models years have the best looks IMO. The order of upgrades is simply correct AFAIK. I prefer a blower over a turbo for the more predictable throttle response. I rented an EcoBoost Ford, and I figured out that I don't like turbo lag.

Wonderful car. And that gear change! The engine loved getting thrashed... The steering kinda dead, yeah, but I really didnt mind that at all...

As a weekend canyon carver in Los Angeles, my Miata gets driven fairly quickly through the turns . Outside of modifying the suspension and fitting the car with wider wheels and stickier tires you really don’t need more power though it can help but could get you trouble too. The MX5 is more about balance and agility.

Last year I got a fantastic MX-5 2.0 ND Sport Soft Top, fantastic car, nice design, drives great especially with some modifications like Ohlins R&T Manifolds map Exhaust filter Anti bump steer kit
Anti-roll tensioning adjustment rods Motorsport (End Links), the car consumes little fuel and is fun to drive with a volumetric compressor or the turbo would be even faster but it would increase the price by at least 5k and 45k for a Miata are starting to be a lot of money for a non-luxurious Spyder, the MX-5 ND is fun even with 160\180 hp. I had one before
Lotus Elise S I kept it for 4 years, a wonderful car but the Miata 2.0 ND doesn't make me regret it too much, among other things, I have more fun with the Miata because I can drift much more easily while with the Lotus Elise S I was afraid of do damage since it's all super expensive

He didn't mention the details; the suspension upgrade is the same I had fitted on my MX-5 nd by BBR last month.
    - Koni Sport adjustable dampers, but revalved by BBR
    - BBR spec progressive lowering springs
    - BBR specific geometry setup
I've done 300 miles since the upgrade, giving the new components time to settle and bed in...
    Thoughts...
    - just one negative; the low speed ride and bump absorption is a bit firm, perhaps this will settle better as it all beds in more, though this is still the case after 300 miles. HOWEVER, I still have yet to try backing off the damper setting from the current medium, I hope and think setting it to soft will iron out this gripe
    - but in all other ways; mid and high speed ride/absorption, cornering flatness, initial and mid-corner turn-in response and holding are just greatly improved. In particular I'm floored by how it behaves when imputing more lock to tighten the line still further mid-corner when pushing on; it just obeys and tucks right in beautifully, where before the rear tyres would scrub and push wide
    ----------
Assuming my upcoming damper adjustment to softer gets rid of that firmness without compromising the positives, I think this is a great upgrade. As it stands, the firm low speed ride is tolerable and the overall net improvements are fantastic.

They are finally supercharging ND2 in America. The problem is the smaller fuel injectors causing not enough fuel to get to the combustion chamber when it's supercharged. It means they've had to program the rev limit back to 7000rpm instead of the ND2 standard 7500rpm. Still it's a big jump in hp to supercharge.

I own a ND1, since a few years ago. When i bought it, i didnt have a car, and i thought in selling it in a few years (about now) because they dont really depreciate. However i decided to keep it forever, the feeling of driving in a twisty road, with roof open is great, i dont need to go on extreme speeds to enjoy playing with it, it looks fantastic, and its really cheap to maintain. The only problem is if will be able to get in and out when i age, but hell, i love the car, and i dont need more power

What a wonderful Video! Thank you very much for the input and those beautiful landscape shots.
They're the same thoughts I got the last 2 years. I bought a Opel Speedster 2.2 with a after market exhaust and open Air filter. Good loudness, some rare real small crackles when you lift the gas at certain revs AND "low-ish" power compared to other sport's cars. But the beautiful thing is: you can rev it out legally on normal streets. In the Forests, on great back roads. It's just so much fun. It seems to be louder than it is fast, but that's what makes it so great - because it feels also faster than you really are. The pure feeling through the suspension... Ah, now I want to drive again. But it's raining😮‍💨
What I wanted to say: numbers doesn't matter. The feeling, driving the car, matters! Even 7s to 100kph can feel so orgasmic just by the sound and the rattles throughout the chassis.
That's what I like about magazines like Hagerty and Carfection. They teach you to not forget about the importance of the FEELING while driving. You don't have to drive a 400.000€ McLaren 720s. You can have even more FUN with a wayyyyy cheaper car - I had more fun with a 22.500€ car. Just be open an explore your feeling while driving different cars.
    Have a great time!
