  • Appearing as “Clavord” in the Doomsday Book, this one was described in John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles of 1887 as having a population of 439, with 2,076 acres of land. Heinrich Mutschmann, writing in 1913, thought that the place-name referred to the clay soil of the township.
More modern thoughts on the name however are inclined to the view that the name seems to contain the Olde English word, “clawu”, meaning thus 'Claw of land enclosure'. The claw-shaped feature may be the low, curving hill here. Agriculture was still dominant in the 1880s but by that time there had been an increase in the service industry.
Arguably both an amenity AND an interesting feature, the church of St. Peter here could have gone in either section in this episode, owing to something pretty impressive you’ll find on the walls inside. Since filming this, I’ve learned how to pronounce the name of artist behind the murals in the church!
Whilst the murals are the biggest feature on offer, if you walk down the lane opposite the church you’ll come to a bridge over a stretch of water we’ve met before - the Chesterfield Canal, built between 1771 and 1777 to connect Chesterfield to the River Trent.
In all this was a pleasant walk around one of Bassetlaw’s hidden gems. The murals and the canal put this one high on my recommended list guys. This is CLAYWORTH.

    CLAYWORTH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - A school bus operator is/was located in Clayworth, called Unity Coaches
    - The beck, even though it looks dry now, has a history of flooding! There's even a TH-cam video about it

Lovely to watch and see the village again. Loved the village throughout my early childhood and the in the early 2000's, as our family home for 50 years was the house overlooking Greys Bridge (black and white chequered bridge at the Wiseton end of the village).

I wondered if you would mention death lane, I've also wondered where it got its name. Our school bus operators are located in Clatworth, called unity coaches. Check TH-cam for a video of the beck flooding where you was.

Hard to believe there was ever in any water in it. It looked like it was permanently dry now

Where did you park in order to visit the church and murals?

Right next to the church up against the wall

@@TheVillageIdiot I went today, but it felt a bit dodgy parking close to the wall, as it seemed a bit of a tight bend. So I parked up further down the road. Did you have fun trying to work out the mesh door at the church entrance?
