  • Time to go to the second of the two civil parishes with town status in the district of Bassetlaw, and this one's probably got just as much of not more to comment on than Harworth and Bircotes, yet is much smaller and has a completely different history.
From the Old Town lock up, one of only two remaining in Nottinghamshire, to the Windmill which dominates the skyline this one has things to look at no matter where you are in the town. Sitting on the Great North Road (although these days the old Great North Road is now the B1164 with most traffic opting to go by the A1), there are many old coaching inns here. The A1 road cut the town in half when it was built with pieces of the stretch between Retford and Newark coming from as far afield as Norwich!
Then there's the Read Grammar School which has a very interesting history in itself, founded by Charles Read in 1669, the man who don't want to be a wealthy shipper in Hull, it served as the town grammar school until 1915. It's also been a library and council offices and now it's empty. Speaking of school there is more than just that to look at. There are two other schools, one a current Primary School the other one the one it replaced known as the Girls National School.
If you want a little bit more of a modern history of this place all you have to do is drive up Ollerton Road where you will find the BT Tower right next to Westfield Farm Solar Farm but it's events of the past that have shaped this town. Thanks to friendly Nottinghamshire locals I was able to have a look around inside two of this town's museums.
Enjoy the trip around one of the most amazing towns in the East Midlands - TUXFORD.

    TUXFORD ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - The Victorian Lamp looks a lot different now to the original lamp that was in the Market Place before it was restored
    - The brook at the bottom of Eldon Street was commonly know as the Fever Dyke

Just happened across this by chance and would like to thank you for the memories. I never lived in Tuxford, but my Great Aunt and Uncle ran the Sun Inn for a few years in the 1950's and I remember staying there as a kid.
In those days, the Great North Road ran right past the pub. The Newcastle was still a hotel and the main competition. If I remember rightly, the space behind the Sun (now a car park ?) still had the old stable buildings from the coaching days.
My Aunt (their daughter) worked as typist at the local police station, which I think was somewhere down Newark Road on the left. The sergeant offered to lock me in the cell just for the experience. I declined !
As a little'un, there was a lot I never touched on and I'm grateful for the info on your film, particularly what's available for the tourist.
One respectful comment. I think you'll find the device outside the lock-up is a pillory, not stocks.

The culverted ditch you mentioned at the bottom of Eldon Street would have been where the original ford was. I knew the watercourse as "godboke dike" when I lived there (1950s and 60s) but I haven't found a reference to that name on a map, nor the right way to spell it.

Does anyone know where station cottages would have been? My grandfather worked on the railway and lived there a few years.

That "Victorian Lamp" isn't the original "Victorian Lamp" that was there when I was growing up! If they "restored" it as it claims then they completely changed the way it looks! I've not actually read what it says but I can assure you that it looked totally different to how it looks now.

Did you notice that Newcastle street widens as you approach the old prison ? This was so coaches (horse drawn) could turn round when calling at The Newcastle Arms inn

You completely missed the old railway works south of the town and the Network Rail Test Track from Shirebrook. Also the Chantry House near the church.

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually I knew the works were there. Theres only so much I can fit into half an hour. Dont like my vids going over 30 mins if I can help it. Something had to give, and I figured the railway can be mentioned elsewhere. In fact the test track gets a mention in the Fledborough video
