  • Here’s a small village located 4 miles north-east of Retford, sitting with its eastern back to Hollins Hill which, at 223 feet, is the highest point in the area. Its Western boundary is drawn by the River Idle. This is a linear village about a mile in length running from North to South.
One of its most delightful assets is its close alignment to the Chesterfield Canal which affords wonderful walks that in turn link to a large network of local footpaths. It’s primarily a farming settlement, so the paths can be muddy in wet weather. Some public rights of way pass through private land here too.
The history of this parish was been recorded in a booklet published in 1985, researched and written by Dr Rosemary E. Anderson. Some of the information in this video comes from that booklet via the parish councils website. Much like in Clayworth, the reliance on agriculture here has become less and less over time. Depending on the time of the year, this one has an abundance of blackberries, sloes, damsons and rose hips growing wild.
There’s a sad but very interesting piece of history for you here. Three men from this village never returned from WWI. One of the three men, Robert Emson, was the son of the blacksmith here. His is one of the names inscribed on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme Battlefield. There’s a war memorial in the churchyard as you might expect.
In all this is a beautiful, almost undiscovered part of Nottinghamshire which merges with it’s neighbour almost as if it were one contagious settlement. Welcome to HAYTON.

    HAYTON ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - The Ruination-Redemption sign is quite the interesting feature and this is what it means. It's one mile to the nearest pub, that being The Gate at Clarborough, whilst Redemption, 1,000 miles away, is a long way to escape the evils of drinking alcohol.
    - The stone alongside the canal with 34 on it is a milestone, marking 34 miles from Chesterfield. These are scattered all along the towpath from Chesterfield to West Stockwith
    - Church Lane was the heart of the village in the 1960s and 70s. The lights in the churchyard number three. They were commissioned for a local policeman to make
