HOLTON LE CLAY: East Lindsey Parish #31 of 188
EAST LINDSEY PARISH #31: HOLTON LE CLAY
Holton le Clay - “Hill Spur Farmstead in the Clay”
Hello again East Lindsey and hello again Grimsby. I’m willing to bet if you live in the Southern reaches of the port town, you may well be familiar with this place. Located just off the A16 between Grimsby and Boston is the large village of Holton le Clay, a residential suburb-like settlement, or it is these days at least. Holton le Clay was once a tiny hamlet, but such was the speed of Grimsby’s expansion over the last century, its now more than three times the size. There are some really good landmarks here though, its not all modern suburbia.
The most obvious is the former railway line, which swiped its way through Holton from Grimsby to Louth. Holton had two stations on it, one in the village and one to the South. We’ll see what remains of one of them in this episode. Another standout feature of this place is its village hall, named the Hornets Nest, in honour of the RAF squadron that flew from a nearby airfield. There are three pubs, two playing fields, and a gorgeous church that dates back to the 11th century.
And the whole thing is twinned with the suburb of Sarge-Les-Le-Mans, in Sarthe, in North Western France. People love living here - and two famous ones once did - scientist Richard Collins and parasport athlete Hollie Arnold.
It’s a great place all ends up, lets go and see why!

    Leicestershire County Council's Public Rights of Way map shows a Public Footpath heading north to just short of the church. 🤔

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yes it does - but that's the confusing bit. It is, as you say, JUST SHORT. That means theoretically, the part between the road and where the footpath ends is seemingly private. That would explain the sign on the gate at the very least.

      Mixture of both. I was really good at Geography in school. Like, insanely good. I was absolutely hopeless at things like English (which is why I have zero confidence in any script I write), but with a map, I was your man. The history stuff, I've had to to teach myself that for the most part. I know more now than I did four years ago that's for sure

      @TheVillageIdiot I know that. But having the town status doesn't make it a town as far as amenities are concerned, I live here in Caistor, I prefer to see it as a village..its has more of a village vibe...if Caistors a town then Grimsby surely is a city🤣🤣🤣

    Great video. My Mum lives in Cranswick, her father was born and lived on Mill Street, Hutton, he had 10 siblings one of which was Herbert Johnson author of A Tale of Two Villages. The clock you were looking for is a sun dial clock on the site of the old school on the village green. It’s flat on the ground so you have to look down to see it. It’s close to where you were stood near the telephone box which has recently been converted into a take-one, leave-one library. You’ll have to come back for another look! 😊

    I understand what you mean about the driving, I was on holiday on the Isle of Skye in May and the Scottish Highlands, although beautiful, has some very difficult and dodgy roads. One island I drove on was the Isle of Raasay, located just off Skye and reached by ferry, where all the roads are few and narrow. Not to mention the potholes and poor road conditions in certain parts.

    I grew up in Keyworth in the 50's and 60''s. It was a lovely place to live. My Mum and Dad are buried in that graveyard where you ended up. Great to see that most of the beautiful old buildings have survived the ravages and realities of the modern aesthetic. Even the "Wimpey estate" doesn't look too bad now that it has some roof moss and aging. Though I've lived in Canada for nearly 50 years and none of my relatives or friends still live there, Keyworth still feels like my true home. Thanks for the trip, literally down memory lane.
