  • For the 66th and last time, welcome to Bassetlaw! Despite the parish’s name, the main village here is actually Ranby. That’s where our main walk around is going to be here. Ranby is a small village next to the Chesterfield Canal and adjacent to the A1 on the A620, which bends South towards its junction with the A1.
Ranby’s most interesting piece of history comes in the form of its church, the oak altar coming from the Mausoleum at West Markham and the altar cross and candlesticks were from the house chapel at Morton Hall. It also has a portable silver font which was a gift and had been used for many years at a church in Canada.
HM Prison Ranby is located on the A620 to Retford. It’s has a fair share of updates over the last few years and houses an increasing number of inmates. It also explains why most of the residents of Ranby don’t live in the village too. It was converted in the early 1970s from its original use as a World War II British Army camp.
This is an area is well known for its connection with the Pilgrim Fathers too. Richard Clyfton was parson here between 1586 and 1605 and lived at the then rectory which is now Haygarth House. Two of his friends were William Brewster and William Bradford, both we’ve met previously in Scrooby and Austerfield respectively
So this is the last piece of what’s been a fabulous 66 piece puzzle…welcome to BABWORTH.

    BABWORTH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - This is from a long time TVI fan (Heidi Thomas Waisanen) who lives in the USA, copied straight from the message I recieved:
"My family lived on the Babworth Estate when my great-grandfather accepted a gardening position in the late 1880s.
"They lived there until WWI and his services were no longer needed. He was an Army Medic and the eldest son was a king’s guard in the 18th Huzzars.
"My grandfather remembered the POW camp near here. (I’m guessing Ranby) He and another brother saw German soldiers running through the woods after escaping from a train headed to the camp.
"When Retford was being bombed during the war, my family didn’t know the extent of damage to Retford. My great-grandmother, Frances Ellis, made her children walk from Babworth to Retford for Sunday School.
"When the children got to town, many buildings had been damaged or destroyed. They went back home to inform their mother that there was no Sunday School that day.
"One of the bells added to Babworth- All Saints, was in memory of my great-aunt, Edith Ellis, the first wife of Percy Ellis. (1950s)
Thank you for letting me share my family history"

brought back memories there, lived in Ranby until I joined the army, went to both schools, as you mention and show the Chesterfield Canal the house I grew up in is to the left of the bridge. As a small child the prison was home to a tank transporter regiment, incidentally, in Bulford, Wiltshire, the current home of tank transporters, their HQ building is called Ranby. I remember doing a project on the Pilgrim Fathers, helped by the Rector Edmund Jessop, an authority on them, also an author of a book about them, there is a 'mouse' dormitory at Ranby House School. and then I see Edmund Jessop's name on the info board....

Just watched this one, Andy, am dipping into different areas picking out ones I haven't seen yet. Love the poster idea, don't know if you got any feedback on them, but I would certainly be interested.
