Nissan Ariya 87kwh - First drive impressions including range and efficiency test.

  • This is my first real drive in a Nissan Ariya so a chance to share some of my first impressions of the car plus as I'm doing a drive of over 100 miles it will be a good opportunity to gauge the efficiency and real-world range capabilities of this version - the 87kwh (useable) 2 wheel drive variant.
    The specification is good. Features some things a Tesla Model Y doesn't have including opening sunroof, apple car play, vented cooled seats, heads up display and more. The cabin is comfortable and spacious, the ride is better than a model Y, it's refined too, but how will it compare against a Tesla Model Y Dual Motor or Standard Range for efficiency and range.

    I drove my Ariya from London to Leicester last week using ProPilot and everyone agreed the Ariya is a better driver than me.

    My daily drive is the Ariya 87kw evolve. In the summer on motorway journeys I was setting out in the morning with 326 predicted range, outward journey 3.8mile/kWh, 4.0mile/kWh return leg, total trip miles 283.9 with 41 miles remaining. That's Gateshead to Chesterfield and back in a day with no need to charge on route. What helped boost the return leg range were a couple of 50mph speed limit zones on the motorway other than that stuck to the speed limit. FYI you wont get 350 miles very easily unless you hypermile and then use the spare 20 emergency miles when you drop below zero. Interesting to hear you say more comfy than Tesla's as I was disappointed in how firm the Ariya ride is compared with my previous Saloon Car, though Im getting used to it and beginning to appreciate how good the Ariya is. Ive done 11k miles in the Ariya now and really like its practicalities of space and ease of getting in and out. The Ariya really suits my use case.

      Hey, can I ask what the adaptive cruise is like? I had a Qashqai recently as a rental and the AAC was jarring - it overreacted a lot (e.g. braking too hard when a car came into my lane but some distance ahead). The AAC on my 2018 Audi A4 is far smoother. I like a lot about these new Nissans but that was a killer for me as I used the feature all the time.

      @roberthennersten-manley6597 Hi, I came from a Lexus IS300H, its adaptive cruise was smooth. The Ariya's AAC is not well mannered, you can select cruise with or without the adaptive distance keeping by a long press of the blue button though.

    The wife runs the 63kw model. Its ok. It does perfectly well. As our first EV, we ordered it because it was a little different looking to what else what outhere and we didnt particularly want a Tesla. (at the time)
    On delivery day we were both surprised at the size of it. Its quite large dwarfing our neighbours Rav4 on a '53 plate and has ample room for the kids. (They love the heated seats at the back!)
    As an EV its not bad and does a fine job. Id suggest that its a decent allrounder. Its doesnt do anything spectacular and wont excite the driver much but hits the spot where needed.

    I think a major consideration when buying any car especially an EV , is 2nd hand car prices/depreciation after say after 1 year/3 year , btw love the channel

      The Leaf successor is reported to be out in 2026, the Ariya was never planned as such.

      Would you choose this over a Model Y? It’s quieter, smoother, cooling seats and anomalous? I’m not sure it would be less expensive or if the residual value would be comparable? The 2024/5 Jupiter Model Y will probably have cooled seats and be a few £££ cheaper with even more range. Time will tell.

      I have a Tesla 3 and my wife has a Zoe, whenever she's on a long journey shes wishes her car charged as fast as mine, to the point that shes now asking to use my car on those 200+ miles trips

    Very good first time review. It would be interesting to have a follow up when you have got more familiar with it and perhaps worked out what you don’t like…What is the cost compared to its rivals? Cheers.

    Was vaguely tempted by one of these, partly because they're one of the few cars to offer 22kw charging as an option.

    Another great video Rich. I think with range tests, based on avg consumption and battery usage, I don’t think this is a great gauge for estimating range. The last 20% is always smaller than the top 20% so I think if you are to do a ‘range test’ then 100%-0% (or as close to) is the best way to determine its best example or worst case scenario range with a consistent speed (like motorway 70mph). Hope that makes sense? Keep up the great work, loving the content on behind the scenes/living with series at RSEV.

      People mostly drive between 85% to 30% and then go for a recharge.

      Why would last 20% be smaller than top 20%…? I’ve only driven one EV where it’s felt the % useage wasn’t linear.
      But I don’t have the time to drive 300 miles just to test it. I’m not a full time TH-camr, so this is fitting in with my main work. It’s enough to get a good handle on what it’s capable of. Another day will always give different results anyeay

      Hi Rich - thanks for taking the time to respond.
      I appreciate you’re not a full time TH-camr and you have a business to run, I really do. However, you do provide valuable information to the consumer, consumers who are finding their way to your channel (and other channels) as they jump into EVs for the first time through salary sacrifice, PCP, subscriptions and new/used ownership. I’m sure you’d agree, that there’s a lot of misrepresentation of what ‘real world range’ is in an EV.
      I myself purchased my Tesla model 3 LR from watching your (and others’) reviews and most recently I purchased an MG4 SE SR to be a fully EV family. I just returned from driving to Paris and back in it. That’s where, for a non-tesla journey, an understanding of your ‘real’ range really matters.
      I know that MG4 in both battery chemistries don’t have linear energy usage, they’re top-heavy. I know this as I’ve been in the situation in both variants driving from 100-3% at consistent motorway speed. The last 15% it drops off a cliff. Without the luxury of Tesla’s routing system doing all the math, I’m sure for most (non-tesla owners) will be caught short or have a failed charger which leads to nearly using a full battery.
      I’d love to know which vehicle you experienced which wasn’t linear.
      I’m just trying to point out that a ‘Range test’ should be more thorough, almost a worst-case scenario, using a simple set of consistent rules. A % of the battery or avg consumption to calculate the range IMO isn’t accurate and shouldn’t be labelled a ‘range test’. I do appreciate everything you and your team do on the channel, I find it a great source of information and really enjoy the monthly solar and weekly running of an EV business.

    Great video again. Just looked at your website seems to be priced similar to model y . Also looking at the website you have no entry level ev vw up , mg , kia, Hyundai is this because of no demand / supply for them or lack of storage

      I DO get the cheaper EVs too, just not as many as the Teslas and sold out at the moment…

    Thank you for this great review. I was considering putting an Ayria on my shortlist. It will be near the top now. I do wonder if I might be better off with the £5k cheaper 63kwh hour version suit me better? Would the smaller battery version be noticeably more efficient?

      It’s a good all rounder with brilliant spec. Battery size choice depends on what you need. Or is a used with big battery like this better than a new small battery perhaps?

      I got the 87kWh one due to a launch offer that was too good but I was looking initially to go for the 63kWh one which would have been enough for my needs, but now that I have the 87kWh one I'm glad I did, it's just great to have that extra battery, if you have spare money of course.

    Very competent; saw it a few months back in good spec with blue leather interior… looked amazing!
    Some have mentioned screen resolution and quirky buttons, and perhaps exterior design could be bettered, but I’d definitely put this on my Shortlist in LRSM/19s form!

    We really liked the look of it and the specs but a deal breaker was the fact the rear seats didn't do a 40:20:40 split which is such a shame and low cost thing to include

    Always great to get your opinion on BEVs, with your experience. I was checking the efficiency of my Model S 85D on the trip journey screen last weekend. I'm in italy now so its telling me that for the last 20,000km, I've averaged 175 Wh/km, which I think works out to 5.7km per kW or about 3.5 miles per kW. And given that I generally just get on with it ie not hypermileing, I don't think that's too bad at all. It's a big shame that Nissan didn't do a follow up to the Leaf ie family hatch.

    Great review Richard! I'm going back and forth between the Ariya Evolve 87 kWh 2WD and the Ioniq 5 Premium 77 kWh 2WD, will be ordering one of them this week! I don't like the ride on the Ioniq 5 Ultimate as the 20" alloy wheels made the car feel too heavy for me. So I would be getting a lot more bang for buck with the Ariya but I can't get away from the 5 star Ioniq 5 reviews across the board! Which would you go for out of interest?

    Another great video, Richard. We really liked the look of the Ariya when we first saw it at Fully Charged Live 2022, particularly the high quality interior and passenger space. However, I bought a Model Y in the end for 2 main reasons: 1. There is much more boot space in the Tesla (it is a much better family holiday car); and 2. Supercharger availability and integration.

    285wh/mi is exactly what I average in my Model Y so seems pretty much identical to me. Although I'm usually driving with my wife, child and a bit of luggage in the car which would have a small impact.

    At the time, I was looking at a Tesla Y, which costs 75k today. The Tesla Y I would want is 65k, and you save 7.5k on taxes. With my Ariya, it was about 48k, which would save you about 9k. So there really is no need for the 7.5k savings. I can take my Nissan to the local dealer, while with the Tesla, you don't know. It could be 3 weeks or 6 months. So, considering all the +/-, I went with the Ariya, and it does what I need it to do. The Ariya is just more practical, and the screens are a bit laggy at times, but the information is in a familiar spot, and you don't have to fiddle with a screen for basic tasks. If Tesla lowers the price tag a bit, I might consider a Y.

    Tesla are just great at getting 4 miles/kWh at 70MPH and I think we need more cars with great efficiency. Also smaller cars would be great.

      I’ll be honest, I’ve a 2022 mod 3 LR, there isn’t a creak or rattle anywhere in it. Same with paint and panels, perfect.

      I’ve had it 3 years now and it’s been brilliant.
      I’m now switching to the Ariya .
      Doubt I’ll get anywhere near 4mkwh from the Nissan.
      Can’t have a Tesla because it’s above my pay grade ….😀.

    I find the the adaptive cruise control much better than Tesla autopilot, mainly because of the capacitive steering wheel - no more tugging at the wheel and it suddenly disengaging. Much more refined than a Model Y, wireless Apple CarPlay, 22kW AC charging, HUD.

    i haven't taken the plunge to full electric yet but im now in my second full hybrid - when you give range figures could you possibly in some way convert that to mpg- im in a new Renault austral range of 683 per tank of £65 and it will do that - i would love to go full electric but in Staffordshire the only chargers we see are at super markets and on the m6 which are always full

      Your Austral then roughly speaking averages c. 74mpg? Impressive if so.
      Well if I charge from my solar then the running cost is zero per mile (excludes depreciation etc).
      If I didn’t have solar and were to pay £0.08/kWh cheap overnight then your 683 miles (very specific number, is that quoted range or actual range?) would be costing c. £15.60
      If you were paying full maximum domestic tariff c. £0.27 would be c. £52.00
      Assuming you can charge at home, it doesn’t matter what public charges are near you.

      thank you for your reply and yes it is an actually mileage i filled the car 4 weeks ago when we got it and did a first tank to empty and got 677miles so less than 10 clamed mileage - new car tight engine so pretty impressed that they told the truth on claimed figures - my trip usually shows between 60-70 mpg around town and 60mpg on motorway so your figure of 74 is way better than i thought thank you Richard please keep up the content because as soon as Staffordshire get more chargers then i think a full electric would suit us fine but for now our only option in what Renault call a strong hybrid@@RSEV

    0 to 60 is 4.8 seconds, not 7. Granted depends on the version of the car to get that speed.

    Just started watching video but first comment. A Kona 64kWh has 272 mile range at 90% at this time of year (308 miles @ 100%) compared to 254 miles.

    I am the proud owner of a Nissan Ariya Evolve. The Major Drawback with the EV is that the smart key keeps all 4 doors locked while parked in a secure garage. Please help!!!!! It is not necessary to keep the EV locked while parked in the garage

    Replaced efficiency with a big battery and a few trinkets to distract from good design. Not sufficiently better than my eNiro which is a 1st gen design. Will get old fast, if it hasn’t already. Too much of an ICE derived car.
    For the money new, it’d be a model Y every time, or an EV6, or an Ionic5.

      Nothing in the Ariya is derived from an ICE platform, it's more efficient than similarly sized cars so can't see the "replaced efficiency" anywhere, I'm doing more than 300 miles on it easily without touching the reserve even.

    Every EV that does not have full integrated access to the TESLA supercharger network, will have the headache of a poor charging network in the UK. I have seen so many videos, Long journeys dependent on public charging outside of TESLA are a NIGHTMARE! -- I wish other manufacturers had the foresight to have their own supercharging networks. Tesla cars may not be as good as other EVs in quality and ride, but they have monopolized the EV market, taking away the anxiety and stress of charging. BYD needs to take notice and do the same. I wonder why VW, MERCEDES, AUDI SKODA, group have not created a supercharging network? CAP electricity charging rates for members

    I had a test drive in the small battery version and was terribly disappointed compared to the Model Y, I found the ride distinctly uncomfortable even compared to the Model Y and the most disappointing aspect is the lack of one pedal driving, they have ruined e-Pedal compared to the Leaf.

      Model Y is a total minimalist. Has absolutely no luxury amenities. Rides harsh and noisy. It’s an iPad on Wheels. No Thank you!
