  • [9/11] Only a few drams left of the American whiskey mini series and it's time for another extremely recognisable dram.
With its distinctive bottle shape and top dipped in red wax, most whisky fans will have at least seen Makers Mark on the shelves even if they haven't tried it.
It's a wheated bourbon, so in addition to corn and malt the next addition is wheat rather than rye. It's also relatively cheap at around £25-30 in the UK.
    Definitely recommended

I once forgot a bottle of MM in a trunk of my car on a hot summer for about a month. The heat brought out the unique roasted popcorn covered in honey and caramel flavor. It was so awesome, that I nearly finished the whole bottle in one sitting. I tried fresh one, it's nowhere near as good. So I made 4 more bottles the same way. It's in my top 5 whiskeys ever since.
I tried plenty of rye whiskeys and turned out rye is just not my thing. So when it comes to American whiskeys I'm mostly fishing for corn and wheat, like MM.

Maker's Mark has a special place in my heart. I know there are better bourbons but I just love it...and honestly sometimes enjoy it more the 200 bottles of scotch I have had. Not all the time...just when I am in a certain mood. If you haven't tried the cask strength it is fantastic.

Upon touring Makers Mark one will not find the industrial physical layout of some distilleries. Makers Marks still does things the old way, they still rotate barrels from top to bottom using the same recipe since 1954, 16% red winter wheat, and 14% malted barley. The Cask Strength is wonderful indeed. I visited the distillery (45 miles from my house) this fall and was surprised to find I could purchase the Makers 101 (Gold embossed lettering on bottle) for $55...I purchased 2 but should have purchased the max of 4. Just opened it a few weeks ago and it is lovely.

MM is great. 6-7 years old. Very approachable and pleasent, but also complex enough to keep you interested.

It's not bad at all but you can get Four Roses Small Batch, Jim Beam Black or Evan Williams Black for quite a bit less here in Sweden, which makes MM a bit overpriced for what it is. I wish it were about 100 SEK (£7) cheaper. That would make it perfect.

Great review! MM is one of my favorite mixers. Shops all over this area including supermarkets are always well stocked with this nice bourbon.

I usually have a bottle of MM in the bar, but always have MM46. Pricier but is my go to daily sipper. The MM Cask Strength is fantastic and seems to be available everywhere, except Canada of course. Another Wheated Bourbon that is nicely priced is Larceny by Heaven Hill, TWE sells it by the litre. Sadly not available in Ontario. Bernheim Wheat Whisky is another one you might try but that is 51%+ Wheat, very smooth.
    Cheers

Don't forget the Larceny, very underrated Wheater and in the 1 litre size :)

Nice review Vin..but i have to say..and of course it is just my opinion but Makers is far from Bottom shelf bourbon. ..it came in the top for the Scotch test dummies bourbon shootout !... i like Makers..sometimes I get like a fresh cut hay vibe..weird.

ah...i see...wasnt trying to be rude..haha. i think i would like your folks supermarket shelves over our liqour store shelves...if Makers is on the bottom it save me from making the mistake of buying what may be a garbage bottle .hahaha

For me this as that nice vanilla, toffee taste but doesn’t seem overly sweet and still as some burn/kick. Woodford reserve which is rated as one of the best by many in the £20-30 range for me was little to bubblegum and bit overly sickly with the sweetness/ vanilla.Makers for me gets the balance better and the wheatness does have that uniqueness and difference to Rye in how the sweetness comes out.
