    Can I just say how much I enjoyed hearing you and Dennis have a really substantive (i.e., no bull****) talk about specific technical issues. I know how much of a pain it is to edit something like this (especially when show the specific technical issues like temporal ghosting on-screen) but this level of in-depth geekery is so interesting. At least to me--and probably many others. Nice work and carry on, Gerald!

    Have been waiting for you to do this comparison. I run the GH5 and love that camera. Right now, it meets all my needs, but I am eyeing the S1H for all the reasons you listed at the end. As for the auto focus in the Lumix line, much of it comes down to settings. I have tweaked mine out to the point that the auto focus is negligible...so AF is not an issue when I use it. I use MF most of the time on all my cameras.

    I'm a very happy S1H owner. No regrets to it. Been using it along side the EVA1 for a while and it just fits with my production path really well (Broadcast TV, Indie Film, Work, etc.) For me time code has been a huge bonus (Between working with both of those cameras and the Zoom F6 recorder.) So, yeah. I fit that use case you describe and to me it seemed like it was the full fledged evolution of the GH5, where as the S1 never really completely ticked that box. But that's just me and my workload. Each person is gonna be different and you did a really excellent job here breaking this all down in terms of which cam is best suited to which user. Cheers mane.

    Great video! Big thanks to @Dennis Schmitz also for keeping the Panasonic feet to the fire re: the ghosting. It's a real problem and I hope they get it sorted soon, along with the issue some people are having with corrupted files. I know the GH5 had it and it got fixed in firmware with v2.0, so it's more a question of when. Hopefully around NAB time (even though it's cancelled).
    I chose the S1H myself as I'm a narrative filmmaker who needs DCI4K etc, plus the OLPF stops moire. Not to mention unlimited recording time and no compromises re: modes etc.

    Hello Gerald. I am an S1 user and i figured out i was in the same situation when i bought my mac mini after watching tons of reviews comparing mac mini 2018 to macbook lineup, and this goes as follows. First of all, not all of us have that amount of money to spend up front, therefore in both cases, the initial investment goes down significantly, being able to later upgrade peripherals as necessary. I just didn.t have an extra 1500$ for the s1h, i miss the shutter angle mainly, audio is not an issue to me since i have a zoom recorder, neither is the better articulating screen on s1h. if s1 did not have the same native dual iso, i would have most definitely gone for the s1h. the s1 has a 5k record option, kind of hidden but really useful if you plan on further stabilising your shots in post. All i wish for is to get the shutter angle on s1 in some future update and raw capability over hdmi as well. Not to mention, 10bit is way more important to me then good autofocus, and this get rid of sony option. I have worked with sony a lot via rentals, but the camera is a nightmare when it comes to menu style and button layout, i always found myself with a headache even when trying to do simple things like changing the white balance. Love this camera, totally happy with my s1, miss that shutter angle a lot though. Thanks for the video, big thumbs up and keep it up!

    Amazing video Gerald! When I made the choice to get the S1H over the S1, the 4k60 and HD120 10-bit options were the main reasons. I don't like shooting V-log in 8-bit as I get varied results, and as a documentary shooter it's hard to expose every shot perfectly. Having 10-bit for all shooting modes allows me to shoot in V-log all the time for my shooting situations and speeds up my workflow a lot. Also coming from the GH4 and GH5s, the articulating screen was something I didn't want to lose. Sometimes I'm filming in such a tight spot that I have to move my screen in a very awkward position just to get the shot. Without an articulating screen, this isn't possible.

      its not , you can use a mirror , infect a mirror is in my kit , because when i shoot with on camera flash , and want to bounce it i use a mirror and its much easier then grabbing the bag , setting up commander , stand , the flash , get it all to work and then shoot , sometimes there is no time for that , so i use a mirror or a mirror like surface . I also cut off one LED light bulb plastic cover , its round and i cut it off put it on flash as a disperser , there are also flashes that can be purchased like this , but most are branded and expensive , and no one is paying me to work . I already lost half of my lenses , they broke , and if someone doesn't pay something they will not get the images , and maybe then they will realize something they got for free , is not free , gear brakes , even if you do it for family like i do . My friend has a flash for his crop Nikon body , and it has a round disperser on top , makes a lot of difference but he is payed but the local governor , to take pictures of him for media . so he got 400$ flash for nothing , i on the other hand use a mirror , and a cut of light bulb disperser .Point being , there is always a way .

    Hi! I appreciate all the work you do for these videos!!
    I love how that "Netflix Approved" Camera list has become a thing. Sometimes it is not clarified that this list for is projects that Netflix is funding or have been alerted are in production and the producers want the film to be considered for acquisition. A bit more important the]an the actual camera is the very detailed workflow they want you to use including file name conventions so when you hand over the finished film you also have to hand over every bit of the raw elements so they can version it or re-cut it..., Netflix buys anything if it fits into their criteria shot on anything but prefer stuff that is considered broadcast quality in SD or HD. The bigger concern for narrative filmmakers and documentary shooters should be if you are using camera and sound equipment for a final cut that will eventually be projected in a theater for a film festival, but then again almost anything shot can be made to look OK on a cinema screen if its processed post properly...., All those effects that you see in Marvel movies are done in 2K then up-scaled otherwise it would takes 3 times as long to render......, or is it 4 times...? BTW,Hello from Toronto!

    Thanks for this video bro, I am selling my GH5 setup and I was torn on the 2 camera's. My buddy got the S1 when it came out. I am getting the S1H now. Just to many little features like shutter angle and true 24p the 6k was the biggest for me, as a solo operator the framing options are huge for me. The only problem for me now is the Sony A7S3 because they fixed all the short comings. I am not invested in any FF system so deciding these days is tough. I would like to see a video on buying your first FF camera in 2020=)

    Amazing content Gerald! Your channel is one of my favorites. I would like to ask something about Dual Gain Iso, when I am filming the best results I can get with the S1 is in 800 Iso and 4000 Iso? Intermediate isos are worse?

    Thank you for making this video! I've been debating upgrading. I'm personally liking the color of the S1H footage better than A7III footage. I wish the A7III looked more like a Venice color profile, but yeah that's a different price point lol. Overall, the S1H fits more of my budget and I already have a Ninja V and I know Atomos is working with them on support for raw.

    The S1 is on sale at BHphoto body only for $1,997
    .99. The V-LOG software upgrade comes free too. So you're saving $700 in total right there and that money can be put towards a nice lens.

    Waiting for a S1H II with 4K 120, little more dynamic range and no rolling shutter. Also would be great to have a built in variable electronic ND

    DVX200 had the same problems with ghosting and this was completely removed by turning off the NR. It's surprising that this issue still affects Panasonic cameras given their attention to detail with all other aspects.

      yeah, now with latest S1 updates I don't know if it's better than S5, and much closer to S1H?

    • @idlemindsmedia
      @idlemindsmedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@KamilKeenanVisuals with current firmware the s1 is definitely better than the s5 and theres almost no reason to get the s1H panasonic basically made their high end s series obsolete through firmware other than the ALL-I options. While I do love both my s1 and s5 the battery life, screen brightness and clarity, extra internal recording options, and full size hdmi output/xqd card slot of the s1 bring it ahead of the s5.

      @@idlemindsmedia hi can you help me please? I am curious if the S1 after most recent update can do both 24fps AND 60fps @ 10-bit internally? Secondly, I am used to h.264 on my gh5, and I am a little concerned with the h.265 that the S1 uses. Can you share your experience? Is h.265 at all recording modes or just 10-bit 4k60? Also I do not have a Ninja so I would be doing everything internally

    • @idlemindsmedia
      @idlemindsmedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billem16 so I came from the gh5 as well but I primarily use the mov format which does support all the way to c4k 60p at 10 bit and I don’t have any issues editing . It will also do 6k 30p internally at 10 bit if you need it to!

    It's 2023 and I still prefer my 2019 purchased S1 for video (especially now with the BRAW output using the Blackmagic video assist 12G). Yes it's that good - I'm amazed every time I drop a clip into DaVinci. I've tried almost every new camera on the market. Poor video autofocus doesn't bother me because I only use manual. The only real issue for me is the weight...if I'm feeling tired it can be a drag to hold this thing up for extended periods.
