    Very good and concise comparison. I would love to see a panning comparison. Doing a smooth slow or medium speed panning on a tripod, with the background in focus, for both cameras. I have found that in all the YT footage I have seen so far, the A7sIII tends to create a "choppy" feeling for camera movement, and instead of a smooth movement there seems to be a succession of still images.

    I think the S1H won this comparison. In almost every case, the Lumix was clearer, sharper, and had more realism. I own both and I trust the Panasonic more to deliver quality footage. Did I mention that Sony IBIS is horrendous.

    Very informative, Dustin. I sense, both are outstanding cameras for videos, with the Sony AF being a class by itself.
    As a S1H owner I was surprised to see the S1H performing much better in low noise and high ISO.
    Would I have bought the S1H when the Sony A7s III had already been in the market? Yes and No. The S1H is heavy and bulky, especially on a gimbal, but it is robust and can record for hours in the sun, etc...
    So, as you mentioned: excellent cameras for specific users.

    Awesome video! I'm looking into the A7siii for its lowlight and autofocus specs. During the lowlight portion, I couldn't help but think that if I'm cranking the sony's ISO that high, that I might as well take advantage of the dual native ISO, and switch it to ISO 12,800 and just adjust my shutter/aperture accordingly to get an overall cleaner image.

    One thing that camera reviews never seem to talk about are the system requirements for editing, vfx and grading of 6k footage in different file formats. I mainly shoot 4k on a GH4 in V Log L on an Atomos Ninja V in 10 bit ProRes, as well as internal 8bit H264. About 18 months ago, I upgraded my 2013 Macbook Pro to a 2019 Mac Mini specced for editing duties with the i7 chip, 32Gb RAM and an external GPU (Vega 64 in a Sonnet housing). This set up is coping really well with my current cameras and footage in Final Cut Pro X and Davinci Resolve. What do you think are the minimum computer requirements for working with 6k footage from these cameras? Many thanks.

      @@pathtooptimalhealth Thanks. I've already swapped to Resolve! I bought the speed editor when it was bundled with Resolve Studio. It also works nicely with Lumafusion's exporting now. The only real advantage of a BM Assist would be raw as you say, for those times I needed the dynamic range - but I'll wait and see how good the GH6 is first... given it has extended DR, that may be all I need.
      I'm currently thinking of the GH6 for obvious reasons: my Sigma art zooms with MB speedbooster, and Ninja V would pair nicely, and I'm loving the internal codec options and workflow should be pretty much the same.

    Good comparison. Its hard to really read color space comparisons when we don't know what color temp settings you're using. It might be interesting comparison to balance for one light source and then the other. Also, you had a really bad lens flare on S1H during the Dynamic range test which will definitely fill in your black levels. EDIT: the flare was in both, but I barely noticed it on the A7, what lens were you using?

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was pretty much at 5600 the whole time with a few at 4200 or so and 3200 at night. The Sony had the G Master 16-35 and the S1H the Sigma 35. Possible the Sigma may flare a bit more, but not by much. Ideally would of liked to have a Panasonic lens but I didn’t have access to one

    • @samsamalin216
      @samsamalin216 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And this began the road to where I returned my S1H and switched to the Sony. The S1H contrast wasn't there, Dustin showed me that. Thanks Dustin, you saved me. The S1H 6k or the 26mp wasn't going to make up for that. The Sony stabilization works, the AF can provide creative control of focus, it's overheating is barely minor, the Sigma lens I pay for actually does autofocus on it --- where is the downside? Anamorphic, maybe next time. Color? Sony has made giant leaps, it's as good as Panny. The high iso noise can be easily fixed in post if you use raw external. The Atomos also provides waveforms and vectorscopes. And seeing the 120 fps, there's no going back.

    Bro, you already got so much better with eye movements! And the new studio space is super clean already.
    I’ve always preferred Panasonic’s color science, UI, and overall video package better than Sony’s. There’s something about Lumix that makes their images look traditionally cinematic. Whereas, Sony always appeared more “contemporary” (more TH-cam-ish/video-ish cinematic).. I hope that makes sense.
    A7sIII is a better hybrid camera. Great stills, amazing AF, Great video.
    S1H is a specialty camera that’s hybrid capable. Good stills. Shit AF. Pro-grade video.
    If someone is just looking for an amazing camera to upload content to TH-cam, then I’d say the A7sIII is better suited. Edit: this is due to its AF & great run and gun style.
    If you’re looking to branch your content/films out to larger platforms (S1H is Netflix approved) & looking to film commercial content, then S1H is the way to go. Edit: This is due to S1H typically needing a bit more precise & controlled environment. Hopefully this changes with future firmware updates.

    Available latitude on the S1H is actually much higher on the S1H due to its much better noise reduction (no mush, no smearing, no ghosting - but lots of texture and detail instead) and higher pixel count/downscaling. Around 2 stops more available dynamic range according to Slashcam.

The S1H and S5 are the only ones that give you true unlimited recording time. There's reasons not to be real concerned about the AFC on the Panny, but there's no way to get around having to plan a shoot around when your camera is going to heat up and need cooled down.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro

      @@below90hz it’s actually not even close to Canon mirrorless when it comes to overheating. Sure it will overheat eventually, but probably only if you shoot in 4K 120. Also the S5 does not have unlimited recording. Only the S1H does. The S5 you have to stop and hit the record button again

      To confirm, you did your test for the sony at 12800 with the same speed lense ? It's just that I've seen other comparison videos where the difference was not this drastic and I'm making a purchase decision soon and this left me a bit confused.

    • @JohannesBuc
      @JohannesBuc ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alanthinks No, he stopped down the lens so he could match exposure. And I think that's is a bit misleading, because you think the s1h looks better so you draw the conclution that the s1h is the better lowlight camera.
      But I think he handled the a7s3 wrong. Frist thing, I woudn't shoot slog during night, because slog sucks in the shadows (as you can see in the video). And at night, almost everything is shadow, exept the highlights you are protecting from blowing out. So I would use a diffrent Picture Profile at night.
      And the second thing that i think could be executed better in this comparison is that he should have respected how to expose for Slog. He shouldn't have stopped down so much in camera an rather brought the exposure down in post to the level of the s1h and we probably would have got a way cleaner image out of the a7s3.
      So I would say that this comparison is pretty flawed and not representive.
      So I'm not sure if it is there to trash the a7s3 or to mislead or to justify the s1h or if it is just a flawed test without intend?
      In conclusion i can say that I think both cameras are good and I aswell am thinking about which of these cameras i should get. But I don't think this video helped me with that decision.

      @@DustinArmstrongPro It was a little ironic sorry ;) Lots of cameras have good image quality for sure. Many TH-camrs love Sony for its undeniable qualities but also because Sony has aggressive marketing to them. And sometimes that lacks objectivity (not for you). However, I don't think that the most important thing in the production of a film is the broadcast on you tube. We see a lot of "videasts" making beautiful 4k landscape images with great music, but it's to wow friends and followers. And without great stories beautiful pictures are not worth much. The goal of a production for me is profitable broadcasting. And this goes through television or cinema broadcasting modes for the lucky ones. Netflix is not the benchmark in terms of qualitative choice of cameras, but it has specifications and that's how it is. But there are also plenty of international shows for the exchange and sale of TV programs, like MIPTV at Cannes, french riviera. For feature film cinema you need Arri or Red anyway ... that's my humble opinion.

    Perhaps the question should be....which camera would you use more often than the other?

    I own 2x S1H fron Panny, and I love them! but.... their autofocus is the worst...!! I own a PAN Fz1000, an FZ2500, G7 and GH4 an they are superb! in autofocus... S1H is more of a production camera packaged into a friendly shape, up to 6K 422 10bit 24fps, also it is NETFLIX approved. So I guess Im buying some sony gear for wedding on the weekend and sticking to s1H for corporate work.

    Sony user here, first I will agree, colour science on the Panasonic is better, I just cant argue here, reason I wouldn't get the S1H ? Mainly AF, yes most of us today are spoiled and dont MF, if I did MF then the S1H was a very tempting camera. Another thing and this is very important is the HUGE third party lenses Sony system has, amazing lenses that cost in most cases about half compared to the Sony OEM. But Panasonic colour science is definitely impressive.

    At 11:02 when you switched to active on the a7SIII it looks like you deliberately shook the camera as the shot started out extremely smooth like every single other review I've seen but then it looks just like the footage with no stabilization. Also, doing low light comparisons in standard PP at f4-f5 is not a good representation of either camera's capability.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely did not deliberately shake the camera. The S1H has better IBIS no question. Sony's IBIS has always been a weak point. It's better than previous models but still not up to pair with some other brands. Why is it not a good representation? Some quality lenses out there can go to f/4 and changing f stop isn't going to affect noise. I'm also confused why you think shooting in the standard profile is not a good representation of either camera's capability?

    Having owned both, I really love the Sh1 and believe it to be a better cinema camera, It’s also a 24mp stills camera. Having said that I no longer have the Sh1 and am going with the A73. Why? Simple, Phase detect auto focus. Now before anyone says real film makers manual focus, I would say thanks for the patronising pep talk but at that price give me phase detect auto focus and let me decide how i want to shoot. Even simpler and I hope Panasonic / Lumix are listening,, stop being stubborn and give the next S1H the best auto focus. If they had with the S1H they would have sold 50x more volume and it would have been the best hybrid mirrorless camera. The S1H is too niche in it’s audience like a cinema camera would be, but they gave it a DSLR style body and a flip screen and so pander to the audience and customer demographic you are aiming at and don’t pull your punches. Having made such an amazing camera I fail to believe Panasonic can’t develop phase detect with the contrast detect. The little S1 would have sold more than any other camera if they had gone in that direction. Panasonic need to admit defeat. Unless there is another reason we don’t know about as to why they won’t I just don’t get it. Anyway the Sony A7s3 is the way to go for anyone looking at that “ style “ of camera. Curve ball.... Black magic pocket cinema 6k has the best image in my opinion. Black magic are you listening? Give us phase detect auto focus and let us decide when to use it!!!! 🤣 let’s face it they are all great cameras!

    Technicality the a7SIII wins but the s1H just has a better “film” look
    Like you said, there both winners and it depends on the user’s preferences

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't say in technicality the A7sIII wins. It has technicalities that the A7sIII doesn't have. And the S1H doesn't have technicalities the A7sIII does have. Like you said just is preference. I do like the look more on the S1H straight out of camera though

    • @Airestotle09
      @Airestotle09 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DustinArmstrongPro I meant technicality meaning rolling shutter and auto focus because there so much better on the Sony. Also dynamic range looks a bit better since the shadows are cleaner. But again if your going for that “film look” s1H takes the cake.

    To me the Sony A 7 S 3 is a joke since the Panasonic S 5 came out which can record 5.9 K external to an Atmos Ninja and not just 4.2 K as the Sony S 3 which really does not justify to shoot external over internal. And the Sony A 1 for $6,500 is just way to expensive. Both the S1H and Canon R5 are $2,500 less which is about the price for a Lumix S Pro 24/70 or Canon RF 28/70 lens. The thing with the FX 3 is that they promise 14 bit external recording, but on the Atmos Homepage it states that ProResRaw is always in 12 bit, which seems to me that this statement of Sony is more of a marketing trick than the truth ? Of course this is only my personal humble opinion 😊🎬

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't say the A7sIII is a joke, but there are definitely some other very compelling options out there that give more/alot of the a lot of the same features for a similar price or even cheaper. Definitely is a marketing trick. It can do 16 bit externally but I don't think anything exists that can do 16 bit only 12. Appreciate the comment🙏
