    Hey everyone! There's something I missed out in this video - The S5 has a recording limit of 30 mins when recording 10bit 4K, however there's no record limit when recording 10bit 4K in the S1. Please bear in mind that this is only for 24/25/30p though.... Both camera's have a 30 min record limit in 4K 50/60p
    Hope this clarifies things!

      Yes and you also missed a few other stuff. I too am deciding between the two so I have done some of my research. So if you wanna do more run and gun handheld shooting the s1 has better stabilization than the s5. You did just mention the no recording limit on the s1 that the s5 doesn't have. Besides the difference in flip screen its objective and I think both implementation are good. The s5 flip screen does have a disadvantage when it comes to connectivity as the screen is then obstructed when u have a Mic and headphone plugged in the socket where the s1 doesn't have that problem. To the credit of the s5 which is what's bizarre to me, is the s5 is a lower end camera but comes with v-log pre-installed, whilst the s1 you still need to pay for the upgrade. That's one of the main differences for me where the s5 wins especially when you factor in pricing.

    I think your reviews are very thoughtful and intelligent. I have the S5 and would love the S1R for its viewfinder and 47.3MP, but I have no issues with the S5 viewfinder, and it's great for manual focus. And the 24MP is plenty enough for my actual needs. Btw, while I bought the S5 for it's fully articulated LCD screen for driver's licence selfie, I find the screen gets in the way when all I want to do is take a low shot with the camera held both hands down low. A simple tilt screen is easier to us. I should mention I'm 84 and some body movements are not possible for me which are easy for you who are young, so far.

    • @oneeyedphotographer

      I have an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. It too has a flippy screen, and I do sometimes put the body on the ground. The flippy screen on that's fine. I haven't done the same with my G9 (yet).

      I'm just 55.. but also have the S5 and e-m1ii. The s5 has become a favorite, esp as I do a nightly photo walk after work when light level drop, the sensor and ibis work great. I'm used to pentax gear esp the k1 do don't mind bigger sized bodies as I prefer ergonomics over slightly smaller. But like the op I'm interested in the s1r but I don't want to have to support the qcd cards just for that one camera. Maybe I just have to wait for an s2r version that takes both qcd and cf type b ...

    Thanks for these videos. I realize I'm late to the S5 / S1 debate but really wasn't paying that much attention to either until the GH6 was released and I went down the rabbit hole of - do I upgrade my GH5? GH6 vs GH5 comparison videos got me into GH6 vs S5 and I started paying more attention to the new full frame options that weren't the S1H, and that I could afford. Somewhere along the way I bought a Ninja V thinking it would at least get me 10-bit 4K60p for my GH5. Maybe I was still ok in MFT land. Nope. I realized what the Ninja V can do with the full frame cameras and it's back to camera-envy time. At any rate, I just shipped off my GH5, my BMPCC4K and a bunch of glass and adapters for an S5 and the Panasonic f/4 24-105 to try out the ecosystem. I probably found your channel, consumed most, if not all, of your videos within a very short period of time, and they were a big help understanding the developing full frame landscape, the limitations and best practices for AF, and understanding most sides of most debates just a little bit better. And the reality is: I'm still not sure if I want to swap my order last minute for the S1 just because of the full size HDMI. Had a GH4 and was thrilled to step up to full size HDMI with the GH5. Nothing a cage and clamp can't solve though. 90% sticking with the S5. Don't care that much about the record limits and the EVF as a more video-centric shooter with a Ninja V.

    Bought S5 after S1, particularly with this nice review, *and totally disagree with you.* ("I would go with S5 over S1"). Image quality might be the same, BUT...... and this is very huge "but" - S5 is like a toy and build construction is MUCH cheaper in quality. Viewfinder as well is not comparable to S1, at all. I knew that it's lower res, but actual qulity difference is drastic. I would defenetelly and absolutely go with S1 instead of S5.... Difference in the build quality is dramatic. It's like another brand and another level of camera. The only pros is turnable monitor.... Size is not much smaller as well, just about the same. So the only one single point to buy S5 over S1 if you very limited in budget, but even if this case I would borrow the rest and buy S1..... So, review is kind of misleading a little bit.

      I went for the S5 too over the S1, but I find the viewfinder hard to work with. Especially when you were glasses. It’s also so dark when you compare it to other camera’s.

    Thanks for your well done Video!
    Weight, Flippy Screen and 2 SD card slots might be preferrable for many users.
    One downside of the S%, that the excellent 24-105 f4 is the kit lens for the S1 only.
    If you want a 1 lens kit to start with I prefer the S1 with said lens. The tank like built quality plus the full size HDMI is very appealing. This is a camera that lasts. Flippy screens are always delicate to handle. For criticalVideo focus an external monitor is anyway the way to go.

    If anyone cares, from a long time user: The EVF turned out to be a big deal which I did not expect in the beginning, which is why I now own both S1 and S5. If you're into video and use manual lenses and/or make use of the excellent adaptibility of vintage and manual lenses like M-mount lenses - you WILL want the better EVF. The same is also true if your eyesight isn't 100% anymore. Both screens are super fast and lag-free, but with the focus peaking being so-so on the S5, the EVFs resolution is not enough for critical focus with manual lenses or makes it a LOT more tricky to be spot on.
    Also, if you do not film/shoot yourself all the time or spend most of the time taking pictures in the most extreme poses - the screen of the S1 turned out to be much more ergonomic for me after all (esp. with cables running out of the left side of the camera).

    Thanks for the video, Josh. One other thought is that the S5 has a 30-minute time limit on some of the internal recording modes (I think it's the 4K 10-bit modes), while the S1 doesn't. I guess that is the main reason I keep my S1 instead of trading it for a (second) S5, in case I want to record an interview or a wedding ceremony and I expect it is going to go longer than 30 minutes. On the other hand, kind of bummed the internal 6K of the S1 is only 8-bit and has a 15-minute limit, because I would have liked to use the 6K for re-framing those (long) interviews and ceremonies.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey! So if you want to record longer than 30 mins with the S5 you totally can, but only in 8bit. Personally I never shoot longer than 10 mins at a time so for me it's never been an issue, however I can understand where you're coming from!

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Hugh, thanks for watching mate! The S1's IBIS is moderately superior, but I don't think that comes down to specs... I think it comes down more so to the added weight of the camera. Even if the spec sheets say it has an extra 1/2-1stop of IBIS (I'm unsure at this point because it's different everywhere you look), I think that makes less of a difference than the added weight does for handheld shooting.
      The S5 has marginally better AF i'd say, but only in video. the difference isn't too major though when you've set up the AF settings properly for the situation you're shooting in, and, in my testing, I've got very similar results!

    Full HDMI port is the biggest argument for S1, if you use external recorder/monitor. The micro HDMI port of the S5 will break, it is just a matter of time. With full size HDMI the S5 would be perfect.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I agree with you here to be honest. I use external monitors all day every day with the micro HDMI port and so far it's handling it just fine. But all it takes is one knock and then it's an expensive bill to get the Micro HDMI port fixed or replaced.
      Honestly though, we can't complain too much since the form factor of the S5 is so much smaller and it's a lot better for my work. Let's just hope the micro hdmi holds up!

      I would agree but there’s no incentive for LUMIX to push the limits. They have a user base that’s willing to wait so they’ll juice them for as long as they can with subpar features and incremental upgrades. Look at the GH5mkii and the supposed “second coming of Christ” camera, GH6. I want M43 to live but it’s on life support while they keep claiming “M43? Oh, everything’s fine”.

    • @elephantgrass631
      @elephantgrass631 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eduardocardona6608 True but prices can be competitive if there were more players in the market innovating. There's no incentive for that. I remember Nokia claiming that Apple will fail in the phone market because "you can't just walk into the phone market with no experience and be successful". This is where Nokia's market research killed them.
      Don't get me wrong, I agree with you with what's happening now, but if a big company that was bored decided to buy say, Blackmagic Designs or Lumix's imaging division (which makes jack for money and doesn't even show up on the yearly report. It's lumped into the "other" revenue slice beside home appliances slice in the pie), lose a bunch of money at the start only to come through with a camera breakthrough, that would be great.
      Unfortunately, that breakthrough would only be worth it if it were mainstream. And the mainstream want better phone cameras, not interchangeable lens mirrorless.
      Your statement about the art proves this. It doesn't matter about the gear. It matters what's made WITH the gear.

Anyway, how do you feel about the flip screen on the S5 vs tilt on S1. My decision is basically down to this Bc all the video specs I care about now seem to be pretty matched on both cameras. I do 80% photo 20% video. I feel like I’m going to get so annoyed having to flip out and over just to look down vs the tilt screen I can just pop out quick and look down. Do ppl just get used to the flippy screen after awhile being off axis? The flip screen has never been an issue for me for stills. It allows you to be a lot more flexible when shooting at different heights and angles, and can also be used in the same conventional ways as the standard tilt screen.
      Granted, you may have to use it off to the side for some angles, but this really hasn't bothered me at all!

The d pad buttons are way harder to press than the S5 and also when you touch them they rattle a little. Is that normal? Also just taken the lens cap off to check the sensor and there is a few marks on the top left part. Is this the actual sensor or just a curtain that protects the sensor. If so then not too fussed. If it’s the sensor then it will go back. Cheers.

    @TimGanderPhotographer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey Josh, thanks for all the info, wow you packed a lot in! I had to take speed to keep up ;-)
    I see elsewhere in the comments some concern about the micro HDMI port being vulnerable to damage. Do you think a cable clamp would help? Also, at 11:00 - that's a bonkers rig! I have the Tascam DR 70D which I fix under my camera where it's easier to see the controls and display and it doesn't become a destabilising side-weight. I'd consider the Panasonic XLR attachment thingy (very nifty), but then if I ever switch away from Panasonic, it wouldn't work with anything else plus I like that the Tascam can run a parallel track at a lower volume to give me a safety track should the main audio clip out unexpectedly.
    You've put my mind at rest about a few things. I was looking at the Canon offerings, but they're either a bit meh, or hopelessly expensive for people who need two bodies (preferably matched). I think the S5 will be my first non-Canon work camera since the mid 1990s!

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hahaha! Yeah I need to slow down sometimes hahaha!
      Yes defo, a cable clamp will alleviate that issues nicely since it'll make the cable more secure in place.
      I actually never use my camera like that haha - that rig was just for illustration! ;D
      I think you'll be a very happy camper with the S5. You get a lot for your money and it's built to last!

      @TimGanderPhotographer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm on the cusp of buying two S5 bodies. However, I'll keep a couple of Canon lenses to use with my EOS 1N film camera. Now THAT'S a camera built to last!
      Keep up the good work. I hope shooting work is picking up for you too.

    Thanks mate!!! Great video. Just a couple of questions....Am I correct in thinking the S5 can only continually record in 4K 8bit? The S5 only has the red recording square on the monitor whilst recording and in regards to how the camera records footage to Media, does it break the footage into 4gb chunks similar to the GH4??

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey James! Glad you liked the video - yeah sure would love to answer these questions:
      Yes, you'd be right in saying that you can only record 8bit 4K for over 30 mins.
      The red square is an option you can set in the menu and it'll only appear when you're recording as a bigger/better way to ensure the user that. it is indeed in rec mode.
      I haven't had the S5 break the footage into 4gb chunks... It all records as one file!

      @@KeithSklower of course, but that's a significant extra expense, especially considering batteries and SSD's, not to mention having to ensure those batteries are charged, the extra weight in the bag, and having to rig it all up. The appeal of these cameras (for me) is the 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 internal recording, combined with the IBIS. Simple, compact, and run and gun right out of the bag. I can't believe that you dont find using the S5 viewfinder vs the S1 a bid deal. The viewfinder in the S5 is awful and impossible to nail focus when shooting video. I've updated from the GH5 to the S5 recently, and although physically they look quite alike the Gh5 feels so much nicer and better ergonomically when working with it. With the S5 I found myself changing the shooter speed and pressing buttons by mistake all the time. The grip doesn't feel as good as the gh5. I have owned Canon cameras with battery grips. The battery grips hold two batteries external to the camera body. Those batteries are held in a cartridge which is easy to remove and replace.
    I would like to see a similar implementation for memory cartridges, a field-replaceable cartridge system. I might be offered one or two CFExoress cards, one or two SDXC cards with the obvious one of each. I don't think I need the speed of CFExpress, but having two monster SDXC cards would be cool.
    Conceivably, the cameras could have permanent SSD storage, 64 or 128 GB perhaps, to serve as a buffer while data are transferred to removeable memory cards. The SSD should offer all the speed (and more) of CFExpress, while allowing the use of lower spec SDXC cards.

    Josh, thanks for your presentation--clear and concise, and I appreciate the time stamps, as I only do video.
    You are right about the EVFs. On paper it looks like the S1 takes the prize, but in reality the EVF of the S5 seems, well, not that bad. You can certainly see well enough for most of what you do.
    Going on regarding the EVF, there are some significant differences a young guy like you may not take note of. The S1 diopter falls well short of +4.0. That's a real problem for someone like me, who hates to shoot with my glasses and MUST have the +4.0 diopter in order to see focus. To solve the problem I had to buy the top quality S1/S1H rubber eye cup and place a +2 diopter over it with some Sugru---THEN the EVF looked great. Very remiss of Panasonic to make an expensive camera and short customers on the Diopter adjustment.
    ....but there's more.
    The Peaking feature on the S1 is TERRIBLE. It seems to work fine when setting focus (I'm primarily a manual focus shooter). But the minute you hit record the peaking shockingly diminishes---in some profiles it seems hardly viewable---to the point of vanishing. BIG problem if you want to track a subject with manual focus.
    The sum force of the diopter issue and the horrific focus peaking were deal breakers for me. The S1H was great...but the menus were FAR more than I needed, and there was so much I did not use that got in the way of finding what you actually needed I sold the S1H...sad to say. Plus, it was too heavy, and would wear me out in the Texas summer.
    The S5 strikes a wonderful happy medium, with good (NOT great) peaking, an adequate EVF with sufficient diopter strength---so for me, it's a keeper---yet I have not found any of the full frame cameras with such an elegant image and colors as what I get from the GH5S---what a great camera! Image and colors out of the camera that exceeds what I can get from the Canon cameras.
    Panasonic great company. But, perhaps you can answer one question for me: did Panasonic FIX the terrible peaking on the S1 with the updates?
    Finally, I want to say to you I'm NOT the Lone Ranger. There are lots of run and gun shooters who prefer to shoot manual focus and reply on focus assist tools like punch in and peaking. Let me encourage you to include information that would be helpful to them in your subsequent videos. I think the big companies don't really want that. They want you to spend a fortune on their ULTRA expensive lenses---most of which are focus by wire and, by definition, useless for video. I actually don't own a native Panasonic full frame lens. For me creative video is crippled by enslavement to AF systems. Results are almost always more "cinematic" and creative when you pull focus manually.
    Sorry this is so long. Thanks for wading through it and for a good, clear presentation.

      Hello William, thank you for your lovely comment and for taking the time to watch my video!
      The EVF thing I haven't noticed at all actually, but that's largely due to the fact that I don't need to adjust it much at all and it's already pretty clear for me straight out of the box. I can see what you're saying though and that must be so frustrating!
      The focus peaking on both the S1 and the S5 is a little weaker than I'd like to be honest, even with the update. I normally use an external monitor and the peaking options are a lot better for me and my workflow. I have seen the same phenomenon where the peaking seems to diminish massively once you press record... very strange!

      Josh Cameron yea. That doesn’t happen on the GH5 or 5S. What a strange crippling.

    I got an s5 and use your AF recommended settings mixed with pav saying to use 1area human detection. So far I’m happy! Does the s1 perform the same with AF or is the s5 better because it’s newer?

    Thank you for such a detail video. Does the Lumix S1 change to crop area for 4k50/60fps as same as S5?

      Hey Kien! Thanks for watching! Yes it does crop in at 4k 50/60p :)

      @@JoshCameron Thanks for the information. And with 6K internal recording, which is the right memory card for S1? That should be a XQD or Sd Card U3 is just fine?
      Thanks again! (I already have a S5 and want to try some cool features that only have in the S1)

      They're pretty similar to be honest! The S5 would probably have the slight edge though for video :)
