Ah the good old days, when you knew where your stuff was in the "office", hows the house updating going all good I hope and incase you missed it, the idea for more desk space I had was to put like a pull out draw with collapsable legs under maybe, hope it helps enjoy the new found peace there.
It's gotta be worth trying to remove the battery(and shorting the pins), I assume it's the southbridge that is battery backed not the bios chip(since its non-volatile)
Well then, I got a PS5 few days ago, and I was deciding how to put it and my wife who has not very much tech knowledge says: “Don’t put it vertically it can leak liquid metal!” Thanks Phill, now my PS has to be horizontal 😂😂😂😂
When you put a video like this I get scared and start hoping I'm not the moron you're referring to. Then I remember I don't even work with electronics and I feel relieved.
One says, that this SPI flash can be easily reprogrammed with any dump of the same Mobo revision, because they do not have any keys/protection. The only thing matters - is it disc version or not.
When i was just starting out (audio gear manufacturing), i actually had a forum perplexed for a few weeks, and subsequently caused a UK electronics distributor to pull a product, because it was 60/40 Sn/Pb in the WRONG ratio, but not clearly marked at all! And being sold alongside other electronics solders. Things would work very intermittently. I'm lucky the forumites helped figure that out, else i would have lost all confidence!
I was really hoping you could get this one going. It sucks. I know it has got you really thinking about the cause of failure! Maybe just scarp it and move on. Great videos keep up the good work.
gutted you couldn't fix this one mate but im sure we will see it again and i do apriciate you post the video even when you aren't successful other channels dont bother posting a video when they cant do what they set out to do i like your videos because when i start watching i dont know if you will fix it or not keeps things interesting
I used oatey #95 Flux on a $22 guitar pedal project. I'll have to go open it and see if it's all chewed up. Lol. I did have 91% IPA I was cleaning with immediately after though. Haha . Thank christ it was only a personal project.
I know exactly how you feel. A lot of people don't know what they're doing and risk damaging their console or risk harming themselves (especially with power supplies). Electronics are not to be taken lightly!
phil I admire you 100 percent in your ability as a pro technician but I have said before to stop buying other peoples attempts at repair and throwing money away unnecessarily away. start purchasing from a trusted supplier they are out there if you look hard enough especially Ireland has a massive supply of consoles if you know how to look for them..hit me up if you need help with this I'm more than happy to help you.
Can't you test the caps around the encoder to test it? I've found that when I had a bad one, the caps surrounding it were testing short to ground.. also there's a few components on the opposite side of the Southbridge that will short to ground that could've been tested? I only know that from your older videos. 👍
i can't understand sony decided to use liquid metal in the first place, its good when you have skills to work with it,but lots of people just don't and destroy there ps5 with try to refresh,i did a few delids on pc cpu's and it worked fine, but on a console, don't think it the good decision to use it there.
If you were to do a demonstration on not using plumbers flux, Fry's powerflow would be a more dramatic demonstration as it's self cleans pipes unlike laco which from plumbing point of view I quite natural.
As I had said in part 1, it seemed to have had a 5 or 6 second BLOD before it became a beep without turning on. Makes me wonder if the solder balls under the Southbridge are not making a great contact with the board or if that Southbridge is just bad but not showing any shorts.
with your 'forgetful' bit about the encoder - I find marking something if I have changed/remade the connection with a white dot pen works wonders when coming back to a project after a day or two :) Great content as always.
@@RobBob555 its literally a second with a dab white dot pen when replacing items over more than 1 session. But OK, he spent more time on the item because he forgot he replaced it...
I love your work but your statement around 'society as a hole' bothered me a bit. Yes, whoever done the work used the wrong materials, equipment, etc. Maybe they were just learning, as you did once. You got better. Trial and error helps improve experience. I understand your annoyance but isn't it better people try to recover things; instead of binning them? We all have to start somewhere. I love repairing things but am only getting into smd/microsoldering. I'm going to make mistakes but thanks to your videos and positive guidance , I think I can keep things out of the dump. Again, this is not an attack on you and I do understand your annoyance; but.. Familiarity breeds contempt. Please keep up the good work on repairing, instead of consuming. Also, I didn't work on that board, so it wasn't me :) I just much prefer when your positive and happy. Makes for better viewing and better learning.
Did you fix the console that you had to reball 3 or 4 times a few days ago, because you put the chip on in the wrong orientation the first time you tried?
I used plumbers flux when I began soldering, at least it was on a Mega Drive and because it was pre 2020 I only paid £20 for it and the board was already cracked to desolder the crystal and put on a PAL console, when I went back into the original console a few months later it was rusted! I will make it clear I did use IPA and a toothbrush after soldering so I knew at least that much.
Could be a few different things - there's a way to get an error code from it that will give you an idea of what the problem is (search "PS3 SYSCON"). If it's an old fat model there's a good chance it's due to bad caps, which can be replaced relatively easily.
They varied so much between machines it's not possible to use someone else's profile.. Different room temps, variables.. Its just a practice and trial error.

Not you specifically Phil, but don't repair vids embolden people to give it a go and sometimes end up like that board? You can't fix stupid, you can only try to remedy ignorance.
There are so many repair videos out there, the stupid ones who are going to cock it up have already been emboldened. 😂 Good for business for Phil (except in cases like this), though!
