@@TheCod3r hey bro can I talk to you personally got a question/ need some guidance on repair a hdd on a Xbox s even willing to pay you for your help.. how can I get in personal contact with you.. thanks for your time bro
tips from a retroconsole expert: all screws were originals. so don't worry about that. the power supply is simple to repair. those are notorius to go bad due to 2 small capacitors on the high side voltage. specifically C3 and C20. if you change those caps you have a new working PSU, trust me. and the PSU is original as well.
Thanks for the info buddy. I'll take a look at the psu when I work on part two tonight. I still have it sat on my bench lol. Thanks for the tips too. As you can see I'm new to this so every tip will help me get better 😉
@@TheCod3r don't worry, i'm here to help and cover your back in your retroconsole journey
@@RVNR2022 thanks buddy
Good to see you working on the PS2 any older generation console repair is great to see :)
And apparently not many people know this but just as the ps2 powers on, the tower block animation effect that you see, depending on how many tower blocks there are, represents the amount of games played on the ps2, and the height of a particular tower represents that games progress.
I can't remember if it only does this with a memory card in. Or if it does it all the time. Man, hard to believe it's been over 23 years since this beast of a console came out!
@@kulilin3104 You might be correct as this would be the main way that the console would remember that type of data.
FYI, you need to check both parts of the DVD drive as it's a DVD and CD drive combined, usually after fixing these for years, the CD part tends to fail. You could try the trim pots on the laser itself, but, having replaced many its usually a laser swap. Was involved in modding these.
You don't have to replace the battery. When you go to adjust the date, press X then go to Seconds, press up and down, then X again. The seconds will start moving, you can then set proper time and as long as the console is connected to the mains it will keep the settings even with dead battery. These aren't economically viable to fix now, but their prices are slowly increasing. I sold a PS2 recently with two joysticks for 65€ (considering I paid 15€ for the whole package) which was in similar condition to the second one you tested. Might want to keep them rather than scrap for parts, who knows how much they'll be worth in the future.
Who wants to do that every boot up though? The battery only takes like 10 mins to get to and replace while u can clean everythingout there. I also put new thermal pads in to since mine was blowing cold air only(not a good sign)
The PS2 is the best console one of my favorites consoles ever made by Sony 😍😍
The one system where it attempts to spin up but then stops, try cleaning the laser and adjusting the variable resistor. I usually record the resistance from the factory and then gradually reduce the resistance by 10% at a time until it starts to read again. I’ve been repairing game consoles for over 10 years. Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, ps1, ps2 and so on generally do the same thing if the laser is failing.
It`s always nice to see old consoles. I`d polish the cases, install network adaptor + ssd, maybe some nice chip if they are still available (or just go for the freeboot), and you can get some nice money out of them.
I was 19 when I got mine, May 2001. Twisted Metal: Black and Madden 2001 Seemed like the pinnacle of gaming. Still have it complete in box.
Great video phil
When replacing the laser make sure to desolder the anti static solder blob before install or it wont work.
I love seeing the retro consoles yes not a big money maker but still cool video non the less
not a big money maker........YET.
The one that doesn't spin the disc has a bad laser.
You can get 3rd party 400C lasers off of ebay etc for pretty cheap, but you might need to update the disc drive firmware to make it work better if it originally had a different type of laser.
As you have a freemcboot card, you should be able to boot stuff off of a USB stick i believe, so it would be as easy as swapping the laser, downloading a program for flashing the firmware, dropping it onto a USB stick and running it on the PS2
21:39 if the blue dots on screen are not spinning but stuck like in the ps2 in that frame the CMOS battery is dead
I have fix 2 of them jus last week, my kind of video a little retro stuff 😁😁😁
Logo not spinning - just set clock after battery replacement. Disc drive try to start only - laser is dead or need calibrating or ribbon is broken or even anything else linked to laser not working. Thats just mean Disc drive don't see CD/DVD. It only speed up if see something.
Great to see an older repair. I enjoy those too. Love how the battery had a ps logo on it! Been there since the beginning of time😅
Don't forget to test the disc drive with both cd rom and dvd rom games, ps2 can read one and not the other, my ps2 reads dvd rom but not cd rom
I'm always amazed watching these repair videos . Thx 🎉
Thanks mate, much appreciated
Loving the new videos with random stuff. A lot of people like working on electronics (such as myself) but don't work on consoles all the time or ever really. This stuff gives the obballs like me something else beside your console stuff to watch :) looking forward to that video of the TV you were drying out!
I have a ps2 that have the network adaptor paired with 120gb ide hard drive and freemcboot. Not once i ever changed the cmos battery and it went flat. Disk drive still works
Hello Phil! I think it's great that you take a look at old treasures like this. Thanks for your videos and good luck in everything you do!
The ps2 is such an amazing system. 007 nightfire and matrix were some of my go to games!
Nice to see someone given these lovely old consoles a new life.
Love to see the retro repairs phill, hope to see more soon
Don't forget you can always play an audio CD in it
Great video Phil, nice to see you getting to play with the retro consoles. Looking forward to pt2 👍
If you don't have a spinning circle at the main menu it just means the time is not set. Even with a dead battery you can have the time and date working as long as you don't disconnect the console from the mains.
A saga mega drive would be a cool fix for a vintage console
I was hoping you'd check the expansion bays... I used to hide some 'stuff' in those
I love the retro stuff
Ps2 is just gold to fix! ❤🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
hi, if it can be of help to you, I have repaired about ten of them specifically to be able to repair the power supply you have to check that the zener diodes are not shorted, all of them but specifically it starts with ZD1 or ZD3 they are located near the filter capacitor and then replace the 33uF 35V capacitor C3 which usually has an ESR. You'll see that you can repair it with little effort 😉

For 24 years old they are beautiful. I was 18 or 19 when they came out.
If I remember correctly some one back in 2000 put a bunch of these together and made a super computer.
They are indeed. I love my PS2 Slim, it really brings back memories when I fire it up. The super computer thing sounds cool, I might have to look that up lol
@@TheCod3r PlayStation 2, the Air Force used 1,760 Sony PlayStation 3 consoles. They called it the "Condor Cluster," and it was the Department of Defense's fastest computer. They did something similar with the PS2.
Phil, You do such a great job with anything you try to repair. You success rate has got to be at least 90%. I would love to see more live videos. Are you still on Twitch?
Thanks buddy. I've taken a break from live streams for now, but I will get back to them in the next month or so. I'm just getting my life in order first and trying to sort my new workshop too
You know what... It would be cool if you did a video on what different components are on typical home appliance circuitboards and how to test them. Most people will be working on junk that breaks around the house rather than consoles all the time.
I bet the wires for the disc drive were not fully in. The trick is to reconnect them before you actually put the metal plate on
Hi Phil love watching your video just wondering as you have 6 of them you should do custom paint on one of them be good content
Dead CMOS battery does NOT make a difference whether it loads the disc or not. I have 4 phat and 5 slims and all of the batteries are dead (you can tell by the spinning icon on the load screen) and they all load discs fine
The disc drive not working because of the motherboard battery doesn't make any sense to me. Generally the battery just keeps the real time clock, if you have a good disc drive it should work regardless of the battery. All your saves would say January 1, 2000 though :p
After replacing the cmos battery the animation in the background didn't move until I changed the date and time.
I will never know why they still do not build access points to the battery, even on motherboards now they hide them behind the heatsinks.
Awesome Cod3r! Some of those are old and crusty, like me.
I’ve been tinkering with my ps2 system. Changed the battery and a new thermal pad, and a new laser cause the old laser wasn’t reading the cd purple back disc.
Hey phil loved this ,but it hurts my feelings. about 3 yrs ago I threw away about 15 to 20 of thoses ps2s.
psu's have two caps that go bad and cause issues with no power, just do a fully cap kit on them and that will fix the psu
Phat PS2 with the HDD adapter make great retro consoles.
you have to set the time and then the logo will spin after changing the battery
It will still play games if the CMOS battery goes bad. I have been working on PS2's since they released.. never had that issue.
hello so im searching for ps4 pro (old motherboard) parts and case, i have only the motherboard and the metal plates with the heatsinck
@TheCod3r I have nintendo switch v1 that doesnt want to stay in sleep mode. when i turn on auto sleep, it keeps sleeping and waking up. did you have this similar issue? i know i have defective wifi ic because it cannot detect wifi and bluetooth. but it doesnt matter since im going to mod it anyway. i already search the internet but i cant seem to find the fix. i will wait for your reply, thanks.
A console where when the CMOS battery dies you don't lose access to your games.
Oh a playstation 2 slim 💯🆒
Good joob thanks
PS2 rusted all around, broken video connector, still works fine. Ps5, 1 water drop and dies instantly, needs cpu reball.
With the PS2 that warranty sticker always looks like they've been torn, they do not hold up well... So do not go by that.
I still have my ps2 from 1day before launch and kept it in immaculate condition
Yeah it really is an amazing system. Probably Sony's last decent console IMO lol
@@TheCod3r yup.. I also chipped it with a neo2 chip i believe. It was a long time ago :)
But its still working great!
@cfq.tufanuf7601 nice mate. I have my slim modded too but I didn't do it so I don't know what it has done to it. It has am SD card mod and Free McBoot but I'm not sure what else it has lol
I’d like to see the original Xbox being repaired
I'll see what I can do bud. I have a couple in the loft so I need to get a controller and cables for them first
@@TheCod3r I have the controller for it but the console I’ve got doesn’t work anymore. You’re welcome to.
How much would you charge to repair a 3ds with no power and possible water damage and a Nintendo ds with a faulty game card slot
I wouldn't want to work on a 3DS to be honest mate. I don't have any parts for them and they're a pain to work on
You'll probably make more money selling the parts, things like the feet sell for a surprising amount
Pls how can I fix my display porlm
@TheCod3r Hi Phil, how to I get a Switch repaired. I have logged a couple of repair requests but didn’t get a reply. I want to get the switch repaired for my son as he recently lost his best friend and this would help to lift his spirits! Cheers.
What, no FIFA discs laying around?
If I didn't live on the other side of the world I would buy a ps2 from you but the postage wouldn't make it worth while
How about you go to ps3 diffrent models for the next video.
Shouldn't you have a silver plaque from TH-cam now?
Sadly all PS2s will eventually succumb to dead CPU as the substrate fails!
