    I wish the light laser combo had more focus (namely from holster companies). I know is a big cost increase on the lights but adds a lot to something you already chose to bolt to your gun.

    I had a Para-Ordnance .45ACP several years ago that had a Crimson Trace laser grip on it ( bought it used ). It was fun to piddle around with and actually painted close enough to POI to be useful. After I traded that gun away I thought about getting a laser to mount on something but never did it. Procrastination is my middle name. It may be that lasers will come back into fashion but I'm thinking that the red dot craze has superceded it to the point that few will jump back on that bandwagon.

    Great point on lasers, Graham. I carry an S&W 442 with Crimson Trace laser and feel great that I have it on there. For a long time I subscribed to the "visible lasers r bad, ur projecting to your attacker exactly where u r" mantra. Nowadays, I think in certain cases, there's no disadvantage to having one, especially in close quarters/bad breath distance self-defense. I'm about to go off on a tangent... but a few years ago, and maybe still today, there was a popular drill where you dramatically lift up your shirt, draw, and hipfire blast a USPSA target 2-5 ft away... instead of relying on what's virtually blind fire, why would the ability to aim with a visible laser be a bad thing in situations like that? Painting the target and at least having some visual cue as to where your shots will land is better than complete blind fire. I totally agree they can be useful in minimizing how much of yourself you expose.
    There a some caveats to this, though, and some good reasons why the laser hasn't met its full potential even after all this time on the market. First off? Lasers need to make ergonomic sense. They need to be powered on automatically - screw reaching for a button to turn it on, no one's got the time for that. They'd need to fit holsters without much hassle, so maybe grip-mounted ones would be best. They need to be durable and hold zero - even newer lasers by CT and Viridian can crap out. I work as an armorer for a local shop and have helped so many folks RMAing CT lasers, it's sad. Thankfully, my 442's has held up well. And though battery life has vastly improved with red dot sights, I'm not sure if battery life has gotten better with visible lasers, though I could be wrong. Anyway, yeah, I'm totally with you on the potential of lasers.
    As for what I think what's next for handguns...? This might be thinking far, far ahead, but what came to mind were novel handgun designs with non-reciprocating optics mounts. As good as pistol-mounted optics have become, they're still not bulletproof, and I'm not sure they ever will be. Sheared optics screws, electronics that get discombobulated at 5-digit round counts still happen on a regular basis. I think putting the optic on a non-reciprocating part of the pistol's upper, say something like a Desert Eagle configuration where the barrel and optics mounting are on the front portion, with a separate part of the upper that reciprocates and takes the G-force of recoil, would trivialize optics-related issues. One day, one way or another, we'll get there!

    I remember seeing a guy practicing hip fire with a laser a long, long time ago (when the range rules were a little more lax) and he was hitting just as accurately as the guys with proper form. Now I dont doubt he had lots and lots of hours behind doing that but the laser was a great asset to that technique. I think lasers being able to correct for these kinds of "improper" but very common firing scenarios is something often overlooked. but what do I know? I'm just some dude.

    I am new to firearms...as a seller (been a buyer/user for 24+ years); had a couple trying different compact/subcompact 9mm's & the M&P Shield Plus without rail to attach a light became a repetitive concern...I took out my pocket flashlight and demonstrated the Harris hold with an empty & clear handgun; you'd think I was drunk and came up with a goofy idea by the way they looked at me with their expressions;
    I luv being the 'basic or low tech' shooter on the gun line...the more high tech shit ya attach to a firearm is more shit that can fail!

  • @onpsxmember
    @onpsxmember 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The ones that use NV are mostly focused on rifles with their dbawls^^. L&L combos for rails are out there, they can't fit in the rds, the ones in the grips are weak, wash out in the sun.
    Rds are being pushed more out of the box with collab contracts. There'll be a footprint fight of sorts.
    What I hope to see is getting dots on revolvers that have a short sight radius. Something small like the Leupold. The other is seeing lots of small center fire rounds in moon clips. There has to be a combo that doesn't suck out of a shorter barrel.
    The multi dot reticles are already on their way to rifles at a high price, there is no reason to see those on pistols at those price tags.
    A combination of fibre optic and battery powered rds might be a way to get the outer ring without draining the battery that only handles the dot. With all the pcc options, there should be more dots with drop compensation reticles for 9x19mm.

    The lasers idea is interesting, and absolutely a possibility to see those come back. Personally I have not seen much benefit from lasers for anything other than a training aid for muzzle awareness and/or seeing what the gun is doing through the trigger press and recoil. I think we're going to start seeing truly integrated optics akkin to the holosun SCS either coming from the factory pre-installed, or as an actual permanent feature of the slide itself.

      Lasers are definitely more useful for seeing how your handling of the gun affects accuracy, and in a self defense situation you are going to get more out of a laser than a red dot. Overall, I'd say a laser is incredibly practical for a handgun in defense against human aggressors.

    I chuckle over a lot of these things; I watched micro-9s become a big deal and what came next? Bigger versions of the micro 9s, because people found the tiny ones hard to shoot. I've long said a laser is only useful if you already know how to shoot. I was recently reminded of the corollary- that they ARE useful if you do know how to shoot. Is their comeback the next big thing? I don't know, but it could be. Another possible 'next big thing' that has already started is modularity. Why stop with a chassis? Why not have optional lights, lasers, RDS as manufacturer's options with designs integrated into the form-factor of the gun? If you're offering optional grip modules like Sig does why not offer one with an integrated light or light/laser combination? Frames set up for add-on features like 'gas pedals'. We're already heading this direction with grip inserts and grip modules. It seems a logical extension of what users are already doing and if properly styled it could impart a tacti-cool 'Cyberpunk' esthetic that might appeal to a lot of folks. Advances in additive manufacturing could play right into this; manufacturer's wouldn't need go to the often crippling expense of tooling-up to offer a lot of options.

    I would love to see a return of "intuitive" sights. I can't recall the name of it at the moment, but there was a company in the early aughts making a pyramid shaped sight. Line the top of the pyramid to the bottom of the pyramid and put the tip on your target, and you were good. I recall them being very good for new shooters, as it was more intuitive than other styles. They also were smoother, and snagged on things less.
    On the subject of lasers, the 5mw limit is pretty close to the point where your blink reflex will protect your eye from damage from the laser. Doesn't take much power above that to start risking permanent damage. That said, a laser diode with proper cooling can be as bright as any LED. The tech is fairly mature these days (More so than 20 years ago when I was futzing with them for my thesis project.) and they're getting very energy efficient. It wouldn't be too hard to make a 50mw in the form factor of the crimson trace you were showing. Battery life would be short, but some of the solid state battery tech is getting ready for this sort of use.

      @ I think the recoil mgmt mitigation and the “fun” factor increasing folks appetite to train more, and EDC what they train with, will mitigate any “your shirt may catch on fire” issues. In my circle of friends and just about everyone I shoot with in matches, almost 100% of them CCW pistols with chunk ports or inline ports or v-ports etc. T1C, Monsoon Tactical, Vudoo and many others have made comp’s kewl :) Just my individual viewpoint…

    My first laser gun was back in the 90's and I still have it, is a S&W Sigma with a Laser Max guide rod laser. It is a great location for a laser the only problem is that it is not adjustable.
    I also have a SIg SP2340 with a Crimson Trace Laser Grip, I got the gun in the late 90's but the laser was purchased around 2007 I think. I don't rely on lasers that much but back then they were cool because of Hollywood. I still keep them because they are rare novelties.

    Yup, completely agree with the laser idea. A 10mm DA/SA w/ a manual decocker like the Sig P220 but with a double-stack instead of a single-stack magazine. This is my dream gun setup. Umm, more slim grip variants like the PDP F. .40 S&W will probably make a resurgence because it is so cheap and plentiful. I think it really got a bad rap the last 8 or so years, thanks to MAC lol. More 8-shot cylinder .357 magnum revolvers. I think the Platypus is going to take over the double-stack 1911 market and they will keep expanding their customization options. In a few years, we might even see a 10mm option for the Platypus and a steel frame version. I think we're going to witness the Kimberization of HK for better & for worse in the next few years. I think we are going to see some more ultimate do-it-all optics come outta Holosun. Of course, we're going to see the Gen 6 Glocks come out most likely featuring metal sights & an improved trigger. Walther is already going down the Kimber/SIG route with the release of the PDP Pro-x pmm comp. I think CZ will release a P-10F/C Nocturne version soon.

    My gut says the next thing will be smaller, more affordable versions of the XM-157 military, smart optic, sighting system that calculates holdover for distance shooting and shows you were to hold to get your hits. The tech is already out, just very exclusive and expensive. As we know, time will make most technologies more affordable and compact. What'd I'd like to see is more people moving back to irons.
