Hey mate, Yeah the primer and paint can withstand up to about 300 to 400 degrees Celsius which can easily hold up around an engine.
Hey, thanks. This gun is a Waicom spray gun with a 1.2mm spray nozzle. I use it for base and clear. I use it because it was given to me as a gift. Any spray gun will give a good finish the more expensive guns last alot longer.

i liked how you dropped the piece and didn't miss a beat and just kept sanding. good stuff. Not sure if I'm a fan of the "ghost chrome". it looked really nice all black.
When painting plastic, always scuff and apply plastic primer first. You can go straight to colour after that or for a smoother finish apply the hifill primer.
what are your thoughts on high heat paint for these parts?
@coletsmith1 Yes the hiffill primer will fill in the rough plastic and make it smooth. As long as you give it a good sand it will end up like glass. This paint was 2k auto paint.
Give it a go, if your gun is setup correctly and mixtures are right then you should get a good finish. You may need to sand and buff to get a nice gloss finish though.
@kypro Yep its heat proof. You could paint this stuff on the engine block and it would hold. I did it on Brake calipers and it still looks good.
Use 600g or 800g wet to scuff the plastics but the grey scuffing pad is ideal. The paste is called scuff stuff or prepping paste or matting paste. There are a few different names for it.
This video isnt in real time. It was painted months before the first and last part were filmed.
Hello, Yes using the filler primer is the best way to get it smooth. Otherwise use spray putty.
Bruno Oliveira There is heaps of coats but its only if you want the chrome effect. A simple colour would only require a primer and topcoat.
Yes but it is expensive. It is sold at some auto shops in California maybe they can ship it to you. I can find out where it is available if you like.
***** hey mate, yes you can get the same result using spray cans. There is a 2K clear in a can or the Upol 1K clear in a can is also super glossy. Cheers
Because I was only clearing over the Ghost chrome. The black was already cleared 6:10. The ghost chrome is applied over a gloss/cleared black surface.

What were all of the paints you used in this? I'm trying to find the plastic primer and the high fill primer, especially.

Whats the difference between a hifill primer to a regular primer?is the former much thicker? Is it really necessary to use a high temp paint?

Nice video but my motorbike has inner plastic panels in black and there not shiny they had that black front bumper rough touch and I want to spray it and make it glossy like you have done there so will I have to spray on filler primer and then sand it down so it's flat and all level so when I spray glossy black and then clear coat I will see y self in the panel ? If you don’t have access to an air compressor and spray paint gun. Can shaker cans do the same thing?
I have a question which i get different answers every time. After you lay your color (base coat) do you sand it back before applying the clear with acrylic ?
would spraying a rubber cover on an engine be the same process?? I have a 2020 toyota supra and it has a big rubber over on the middle

Were those heat resistant paint or high heat type of paints or just regular paint?
On plastic car bumpers, are you suppose to sand down the paint as well and then start the steps from this video? I know there's a video on this but it doesn't talk about already painted parts.

I want to paint my engine cover on my 08 Silverado like that, but the previous owner painted it and it looks bad. Do I have to sand the paint all off to the plastic. Like start all over?
@JAKtheMAKK I know I need to buy a proper mic im using my phone to record then sending to the computer. If I raise the volume in editing it gets all distorted. Im goin to buy one now..
customspraymods why do you put plastic primer on then the hi fill primer? Do you need to do this? Is that plastic primer clear? Is that primer used so the hi fill primer will stick?
How long did it took you to paint properly my clear coats doesnt get into the shine even did 3 coats but i did not use primer and not sand it ?
Always use plastic primer on plastic, it won't stick properly without it. When using clear coat, go in one direction and don't just spray all over, and be somewhat generous with each coat. Overspray will cause the clear coat to not shine and instead be rough.
So with people that don't have air guns, will it be good done in spray cans?
Is the plastic primer heat resistant? And the color paint...does that have to be heat resistant too?

my engine cover is very rough from the factory, do I just use alot of filler primer to get it really smooth for paint?
And what grade of sandpaper would you use to scuff? Also the name of the paste type thing you used to scuff with...sorry i'm a noob.

I saw the first spray you put on the cover dried very quickly. Is there an advantage to painting in the sun or should it be avoided? Pros and Cons to it?
I'm planning to do this on my 350Z engine cover. So is it necessary to use both primer and adhesion promoter? If so, which comes first?
Quick question. If using mirror chrome, do you need to cut and buff after the three coats of clear?

I just painted my brakes can I use the same caliper paint on the this plastic hood part? or do I need to purchase the plastic paint? lol

Is it me or does it look more like polished metal? It might be because of what I'm watching it on. I must say though that is a very smooth finish.
Mate ive seen a few of your videos and they're great just a question I have a dune buggy and was gona spray it black gloss but hav'nt ever done it before (only done cans) and I tryed to do a side pannel with cans and evan on a warm day it just not a good finish was going to buy a beginner spraygun off ebay for £30 with a priming and spraying nosel kit but do you think I could do it my dads a mechanic and knows people in that paint trade so paint and thinners isnt hard to thanks

Normal paint is fine, it can withstand engine temp.

Why did you spray the clear then the chrome?
So the paint sticks to the primer better, since the primer is shiny it may cause runs in your base coat.
@MEERKATmichael Hello, I have asked 3 different professional spray painters this also I asked the paint manufacturer. And no you dont have to sand between coats or before clear. Just wait 10 min then clear it. :)

@lonewolf74 Hey, This is my way of setting up the fan on the spray gun a handspan away from the gun and a hand span wide.
Why use sandpaper AND paste? wont not just sandpaper ?
Is it really worth the hassle for just the engine cover? Won't cleaning, applying prime and painting do?

why is it when i mention hi fill nobody knows what im talking about?
Nope, its been 6 months now and it still looks exactly the same.
My question is, why would you spray with a gun that was dirty? Its obvious by the upside down tear shape the spray pattern had when you tested it on the cardboard box. Oh another thing about the parts stand you were using. Instead of wrapping it in masking paper and tape which definitely causes dirt and airflow restrictions around the part, how about wrapping it in tin foil and save tape and paper, plus your jobs will come out cleaner.
My 2 cents
You've gotta hand paint that with a brush OR you can do it the hard way, tape up around the "V6" and paint it that way. Your choice.
