Hey, ABS actually stands for Anti-lock Braking System. It prevents wheels from locking up (it does lock them up for a split second periodically for presure measurements) and thus keeping them at the peak of static friction, not alowing them to go into kinetic friction (when the tire is sliding). Static friction is higher than kinetic friction, so it reduces the stopping distance on hard surfaces. It also alows use of bigger brakes. And alows steering uneder maximum braking.
