We are ultimately aiming to have more good choices than the bad and that can only really come from practice.” I needed to hear this. Your video and teaching are excellent. I learned more in this video than I have in many I’ve paid for. Thank you and good luck on your painting journey!
You're very kind for making a video this detailed. I sometimes like the sketch too much I'm afraid to ruin it with paint but this has inspired me to actually sit and practice gouache portraits... Also I'm usually lazy because pencil sketches are way faster than setting up all the painting supplies and I'm very impatient 😅
I am the same with not wanting to set up the paints sometimes 😆 Thanks so much for watching! I hope you get the chance to get those gouache paints out and have some fun! 💛
I like that you kept the mixing palette so we could see how you mix the paint, it makes a lote easier to learn and capture how the paints react and interact with each other. Love your work, thanks for the video💕
This video is so incredibly helpful, concise, and jam-packed with no-nonsense instruction! So much of TH-cam is full of long, boring, videos that can’t decide if they are instructive or aesthetic-asmr. I learned so much in just 9 minutes!

When you picked up that lilac gouache, my eyes widened with recognition! An incredible video!!
I always have a hard time wrapping my head around cool and warm colors (especially with blues!). Thank you for talking about this a little more in depth, I think that solved some issues for me ♥🙏🏻

I really enjoyed this video! I appreciate how you used small blocks of color to represent darks and lights, knowing that the finishing touches can be added in the end. This portrait was so interesting to watch!❤ Thank you!😊
I agree, a huge step up in my drawing game came when i blacked in the blacks first and then worked from that, it signifficantly cuts down the amount of time it takes to get to the mid-tones you need.

I always struggle with the lower rim of the eye for some reason many woman refer to this as "the water line" for applying eyeliner it usually is pink but you still have to maintain the edge of the eyeball if that makes any sense? I rarely see any artists addressing this. Thank you so much for this tutorial! I love love love your painting style and you always explain things in a way I connect with!
Hi! You are a wonderful teacher, your explanations are clear, and the “hints” sprinkled in are a bonus! I’m a watercolorist, experimenting with gouache, on my way to liking it. One question I have. . . why do you choose acrylic based gouache instead of water based? Though you said this video was a bit long, I would have stayed glued to the screen even at twice the length!! Thanks for your generosity in giving us these videos. 😍🎨
Wow!! Amazing portrait and amazing video, Em! I learned a ton watching this. Even though I mainly use oils, I still picked up really good tips especially in color mixing. I also don't use black in my paintings, and just mixing raw umber and blue to achieve the darkest colours, so I'm pretty excited when I heard you also do that! Haha! Your tips in choosing reference photos are also very very important! Thank you so much! ☺️🙂

I’m scared when mixing a color, that i dont have enough of the color and i wont be able to mix the same color again. I got worried when u mixed such a tiny amount for the skin🫣
Yeah, me too! And then I end up with a bunch of color I just clean off the pallette
, we all do. Instead of wasting that paint, i started to stain different sheets of paper as the background of other paintings.
Measure the individual colours in measuring spoons and record it.

Acabo de descubrir tu canal ..me encantó como explicas que color mezclar y como aplicarlo paso a paso ,sigo a muchos pero tú eres la única que realmente muestra como usar los colores y lo mejor como mezclarlos para lograr el color
Gracias.

I'm so glad you made this process video with such well thought-out explanations for each step. Probably one of the best I've seen. Thank you so much. I definitely subscribed midway through the video.
Thanks for all your ideas, especially your thoughts on references. Really helps out!
I am so glad! Thanks for watching! 😄
Beautiful portrait! Thanks for explaining everything so well, like the effects of mixing warm with warm and cool with cool vs cool with warm, really helpful!
I am so glad! 💗 Thank you so much!!
Thank you soooo much for this lesson. You are a true gem in sharing your talent and knowledge with us. Please, if possible do more portrait tutorials, when you can.
From this old artist...you are extremely knowledgeable and talented for such a young artist.
Thank you so much! Happy to share knowledge with old and young artists alike! 😊
You are such an incredible artist!!! I love your flat brush techniques!!!😊
Thank you so much! 😊
This adorable video made it into my recommendations, and I'm so glad it did! I've been falling in love with gouache lately, and I seem to be trying to start painting portraits, but the fear of ruining the sketch stops me, I've only tried doing landscapes from references. Thank you very much for the video!
Thank you so much for your kind words! 💗 The only way to learn how to paint portraits in gouache, is to try! Even if you fail, keep trying and try to enjoy the process! 😊
I've honestly never learned this much from a single video thank you so much?
Emily I'm honestly deeply thankful for your channel and being opened to share your knowledge with us. Many people won't do it and that´s very kind from you

Omg seeing all these amazing artists on youtube makes my channel feel like nothing 😂❤ I love your work
I always struggle with the lower rim of the eye for some reason many woman refer to this as "the water line" for applying eyeliner it usually is pink but you still have to maintain the edge of the eyeball if that makes any sense? I rarely see any artists addressing this.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I love love love your painting style and you always explain things in a way I connect with!
Thank you for a great video demo. Please keep doing more of these. 🌱
Great stuff, finally youtube recommends a pro.
Thank you!

your voice is such an asmr sound huhu idk but i feel so much comfortable with your content overall ❤
Aw I'm so glad! Thank you! ❤️
Thank you so much Jessica!! I love the ultramarine blue and umber combo for black, I never touch my tube of ivory black 😅 I just keep it around in case I want to try the Zorn palette someday! Thanks for leaving such a sweet comment ❤️ If anyone else is reading this, go subscribe to Jessica!! Do it!!
@@emhuesart OMG! Me too!! I have ivory black as my just-in-case😄 and thank you so much for supporting my channel too! ☺️🥰 You're so sweet! 🙏🏼🧡
solid understanding of light/shadow and form. very good work.
Thank you so much! 😊
Just did my first portrait in gouache, and this helped me so much! Super fun, I’m going to have to paint more portraits. Thank you for making such an in depth video, I think a lot of your tips can apply to other mediums too, and I learned a lot for mixing skin tones 💖🥳
This was so thorough but easy to digest. Awesome instruction!
I forget how many times I have already seen this video, it's helped me soooo much.
And I love her pronunciation, it's so clean, the english isn't my natial language in addition to learning the goal of the video I am training my english too★
This is so great to hear! I am glad you can practice two things with one video 😄
