This was the best, most practical intro to gouache I’ve seen. Even being comfortable with the medium, I learned something and picked up a few new tricks. Well done!
I was an art student many years ago and it only just occurred to me that we used guache but at no point was I given any tips. I learnt more in 10 minutes of watching this video than my first year of art college. Thank you.
I am completely new to painting in general. I’ve dabbled in painting when I was a kid using acrylics, but it’s been many years since I’ve touched a paintbrush. It might be crazy to start with gouache, but I’m so drawn to it. Thank you for this incredible tutorial! I’ve ordered my supplies and I’ll be starting here!
This is a wonderful media. Very natrual, logical and clean. You don't even need soap to clean it up. You can paint over what you painted and is also somewhat removal able. It is spontaneous and very forgiving. Definantely a worthy artistic adventure. I encourage you to give it a try.
This is the most helpful video I’ve found. Just bought a 24 set of gouache, and after going through a blind attempt earlier to just learn things on my own, I quickly felt _very_ confused. And then I found your video! Thanks so much for making such a simple yet informative beginners video. More power to you! ☺️
We all start somewhere. I’m glad to be here with a lot of other beginners trying something new!! No matter what age or where you’re at in life never stop learning As Jake the dog said: “sucking at something is the first step to being kinda good at something”
I’m SO excited to start painting with gouache! 29 years old and this whole dedicating time to creating is super new to me, but I’m so drawn to gouache! This video was soooo helpful and informative. Heading to the art store this week. Thank you!
I love watercolour painting and have dabbled with acrylic, this video sold me on gouache as it’s a beautiful blend of both. I can’t wait to dive into this medium, thank you for your channel 🤗
Thanks , I have been painting for about 55 years on oil, acrylic and watercolor,,,but just bought some gouache. You have taught me some great things to start out . I humbly thank you as I start.
I used gouache as a pro illustrator and comix artist from 1990 till 2005 when I digitalized almost fully my workflow. I studied painting in the art school and used many different mediums. High quality gouache has a terrific resistance in time compared to other colors on paper.
PERRRRR FECT! Every instruction video should be like this. Clear and precise matter of fact presentation. Also insightful where technique and how to-stuff is concerned. In other words: the ideal starting point! It has made me enthousiast to pick it up again! Thank you!
I'm just gonna cry. I've been searching a good tutorial for gouache but in my language I couldn't find any, not a single. And you where the answer to everything. Thank you so so much for this. You are a great teacher and finally I can get this technique.
i went to art school after graduating high school and the first thing we had to do was get a gouache set and i had never even heard of it before. i ended up learning alot of what you demonstrated just through experimentation, but a crash course would have been great! nice video and paintings
I’ve been having such a hard time painting lately. I’m subscribed to your Patreon and I always watch the videos but rarely paint anything. I think I really needed something simple like this to break out my paints again. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Having same issue & feeling like have “painters block” & could be having very stressful time & not physically well & trying to care for my 92 year old mother & feeling just overwhelmed & never used gouache & now realized can’t use over acrylic paint as if water touches it like water color. Maybe just getting to sick to continue but miss it very much.
This is the best gouache introduction I’ve seen! It’s to the point, quick and easy to start with! Love it! Off to the store to buy my first gouache set!
Thank you so much for softly and smartly getting us into this procedures. You’ve made it look attractive and comfortable even though it’s not easy and I appreciate it so much that you got right into it, showed every part practically for beginners like me 🦋🙏
I've had my gouache and watercolour set for months already and among the two, I like gouache. It feels more painterly and more convenient than watercolour, and although it's a bit harder to use, I do like the challenge. Gouache is like if acrylic could be reactivated.
Oh, gosh! I feel like watercolors are so much more challenging because of the lack of control! Lol As a former acrylic-only artist, gouache is the Heavenly blend of both mediums I already loved. ❤
STILL the best Intro to Gouache on TH-cam. Precise, clear steps from the basics, to taking this knowledge and creating some small, doable works of art. Very practical and as a watercolor artist, you’ve helped me understand what I was doing wrong (too much water and too many “trying to fix it” strokes making it worse!! 😩😂) Thank you so, so very much!! ❤🖌️👩🏻🎨🎨❤
Absolutely perfect introduction to the most difficult medium. I've wanted to find a tutorial with all the basics and now I have. Your explanations and demos are class. Thank you so much for your help. Very much appreciated 🙏
Does anyone else feel that she could also be one of those self meditating count therapists for sleeping. I swear her voice is so soft, and very calming. However, a great teacher as well. Kudos
In high school I watercolored a lot, and now I've graduated university and wanted to try painting with something thicker than watercolor. You inspired me and helped me figure out that gouache was what I was looking for! Thank you and I'll try all this out!
Yesterday I bought gouache for the first time i searched how to use it and now i made 5 gouche paintings and they are extremely beautiful i used blending technique, the star and the mist, bleeding, glazing, thank you so much and you earned a new subscriber 💗
Finally some some can tell me the differences among acrylic, gouache and watercolor! And also the technique of layering of gouache and watercolor. I’ve been painting with acrylic for many years and want to try watercolor and gouache as well. I knew watercolor could be reactivated but saw many videoes just demonstrating layering without telling the trick. And nobody could answer me the difference between gouache and watercolor (I even asked them.) so I never worked up the courage to try them.
Thank you!! I was using acrylic techniques and applications and wondered why my first gouache painging looked terrible. I followed your tips and managed to replicate the forest painting you did!!
1:13 LOVE this info but two things: 1) “cleaning off the palette” is just wasting paint. Use it up, collect it in a composition book of “unwasted paint”, have a sketchbook for using up the paint. Mix it all together and make “palette grey” and make some monochromatic sketches. There’s SO much that can be done with paint leftover from a painting session. 2) WHY bother having two water jars if you’re dirtying BOTH of them up? The whole point of having two is to have one for cleaning brushes and the other for CLEAN water to mix colors, wet the paper, etc.
Hullo Jess, This is a wonderful introduction to Gouache! You present the qualities of gouache and basic pragmatic techniques that will give everyone a great start to working with gouache, thank you.
Have painted in watercolours for 11 years and now want to try gouache for fun….? With this video I can see I have some challenges ahead, but you have given me confidence! a big thank you for this! I think 40 years of oil painting will help the learning curve and watching more of your videos. 😂 Excellent teaching style. Clear, concise with explanations of where to achieve success and explanations of where you might go wrong. As well as encouraging statements. 🎉 look forward to binge watching and taking out the set of gouache I have yet to open… ❤
Thanks for this! Very informative! I've never used gouache before and decided to try it and had no idea how to use it so I am very happy ot have found this tutorial!
an Aussie! always such a shock to hear my accent when its usually a Brit on an American. I'm just starting out with gouache, but I like it so far, you gave great explanations. Have you noticed how Brits pronounce Gouache? so funny.
I’m stuck in lockdown for ages, not painted in years.. not very good at it either! But today I bought some paint, some pads and brushes and hope to get some practice in. Wanting to try something new and this looks really fun. Thank you for the tutorial and tips!
i received a gouache gift set for my birthday, tried to use it like acrylic and wasn't immediately good at it so i hadn't touched it until today. this tutorial was really what i needed to figure out what i was doing wrong to let myself enjoy a new medium
Thank you for being so technical and detailed. Before finding this video I tried watching a couple of other gouache tutorials but they were just someone painting some random thing without explaining basic stuff, like how much water to use or why. I have many years of experience with acrylics and watercolours, so I need to know exactly how to change my technique for gouache and this tutorial has given me some good tips to get started.
Oh wow, I had never even thought to regularly spritz my palette while using gouache! That's been one of my biggest peeves--my mixed paint dries out and then needs to be reactivated, but it just isn't the same afterward, and I end up giving up and mixing more paint. Such a simple tip, but you've saved me so much headache! Thank you, thank you!!
How lucky to have landed on this one as the first video I've watched. So glad I looked into what gouache is - I'm looking forward to trying it out with your mini tutorial of 6 little paintings. Thank you!

I never knew what gouche was until recently. I used to think I was an artist through high school but pretty much atopped after. Was big on watercolors and somewhat acrylic. I need to try gouche so this was helpful.
@Jess Chung This is a great, concise, and well made video. I watched this with my 9 year old to get her excited about the gouache set she got for her b-day. She ran off full of ideas at the ending. Thanks!

I just subscribed after watching this superb demo. Excellent job! I have always been curious about gouache but, being a beginner, hesitated to go near it. You have changed my mind and given me inspiration! Many thanks!
Great video. I have gouache but have limited myself to using just the white. Your video has given me more basic information that I need to move forward. Really well done!
This was the best intro into gouache I have come across so far. Thank you so much for taken the time to do this. It’s time to play with my paints now and not get as frustrated, hopefully. Lol
I am so happy you are appearing in my algorithm. I want to learn to paint more cuz I really enjoy it but dont get how to do it right. I love how you explain things and I finally am starting to understand things! I really want to start with some watercolor and figure out how to do that, and gouche really seems fun and like something I want to try when I can get watercolor understood and executed well!
You’ve probably figured out by now that learning to paint with watercolors doesn’t help much with gouache! Lol I went from being an acrylic-only artist to watercolors and now I wish I’d gone straight to gouache! 😂😩 I feel like gouache is much more like acrylic than watercolors. I’ve been loving learning about it over the last several months, but have forgotten so much about acrylic painting techniques already and I think they’d be very helpful! ❤
Very helpful content. I've been working too thinly and struggling. I'm so used to watercolor media and finding it a stretch to use gouache and acrylics. Glad this video showed up on my search.
I feel the same! I went from acrylic only most of my life straight to watercolors 😩 And although I absolutely love watercolors, I wish I’d gotten a hang of gouache while in my acrylic days! I’ve forgotten so much and all I’ve learned about watercolors the last several years actually hampered my initial understanding on how to use gouache. lol Thank goodness for Jess and her amazing tutorial! I’m much more confident about it going forward. ❤
I just started using gouache (I have done only 2 animal/creature paintings so far) and videos like this one are extremely helpful! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks so much for this! I have zero experience with gouache, but have wanted to give it a try for a while now, so bought my first gouache set today... and your tutorial is going to be my first step! Super helpful, inspiring and hugely talented - I think this channel is about to become a fav for me!! 🙏🏼❤️🎨
Just be aware that you’ll probably want to avoid acrylic gouache since it does not re-activate. One more thing I would share is if you are adding to a layer and don’t want to reactivate the color(s) underneath you can use a workable fixative spray to set the previous layer. Those are the only two things I would’ve added to this excellent video.
This was the best, most practical intro to gouache I’ve seen. Even being comfortable with the medium, I learned something and picked up a few new tricks. Well done!
I like how the video gets straight to the point
I agree!
Agreed! I’ve seen multiple intros and this is by far the clearest!
Thank you! That was really helpful. I have a lot of exploring to do! ❤

@@Freederick1thank you for those words! I just bought gauche paints and needed some encouragement

Plus you can do hard edge ligne claire or soft romantic washes, or both on the same painting, it's so versatile. I think it is very intuitive, most people could get to grips with it after a few tries, it's basically just poster paint like we all used at school, so as long as you are able to make a composition you like and balance the colours in a way you like you'll have no trouble at all.

One more thing I would share is if you are adding to a layer and don’t want to reactivate the color(s) underneath you can use a workable fixative spray to set the previous layer. Those are the only two things I would’ve added to this excellent video.
Excellent video! Very informative.Well done!!!
