Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I have a suggestion that can help a lot. Paint with the biggest brush the size allow, because more area is covered faster and forces us to stay away from details and to be creative with the brush strokes adding quality to the brush strokes. Try to stay away from small brushes as much as possible.

We were told to constantly consider development of a portrait by half closing your eyes. [Computers were uncommon.]
Therefore, this makes complete sense. Excellent suggestion.
The other point that was always driven home, was that the most important part of getting the mouth right, was to focus on the line between the lips. Once that's correct the lips follow naturally.
In all your work I've seen so far, the mouth is distracting in that it's not correct. The mouth line is too short length wise, while the lips are comparatively too "plump'.
So the proportions are out both horizontally and vertically.
      This affects the resemblance considerably.
I otherwise appreciate watching you work.

One of the hardest things is to transition between drawing and painting. Painting requires understanding of the shapes, while drawing makes you more focused on lines.

As your drawing, focus on shapes and think in 3D and form and NOT in lines. That's how you should think if you want to create anything that is 3D regardless of medium. It didn't click for me until i started doing focusing on form and perspective. Try that and see where it goes!

Backgrounds- I just learned about Joseph Albers’ colour perception excercises too, and exactly how much adjacent colours completely change how we perceive a colour. They’re like colour-based optical illusions, and some are really mindblowing even after I know how it works. I guess that really drove home the ‘background first’ rule.

"You are never too good to go back to the fundamentals" is one of the most underrated art advice

Thank you!!! I work with oils and one of the things that I do that makes it difficult for myself is focusing on the details too early, I already knew I did this but your video helped me understand how to put the foundations of a painting into a better perspective if that makes sense, thanks a ton!!

I tried this out last night. A fast one hour portrait. I could see the benefit.

I recently started painting portraits and it's really nice to know the way I went about it is an actual technique
This vid really helped to remind me of things I already knew and not to focus so much on details so thanks!
I find that when most start painting portraits we kind of glorify the face and block out most of what was learned by focusing on painting it right/perfect and then getting frustrated when it doesn't work out

Starting with high saturation and progressing to desaturation is the best advice in this video.👍🏻
