    • @chrisgleeton6823
      @chrisgleeton6823 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, that really made me cringe. Same with looping and hooking the cable back on itself. I understand it's probably a new cable, and a very light recovery, but following sound winching principles and procedures every single time will prevent accidents.

    • @burnerjack01
      @burnerjack01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And spool out a mile of it instead of enough for the hook up and then just back the truck up. That way you get to handle all of it. What else would you rather be doing, right?

    Why mess with the winch when you can just pull the guy out with a snatch-rope (a.k.a. kinetic rope) or any rope or chain for that matter? The winch is primarily there to get yourself out of trouble as a last resort.

  • @andrewwilson8317
    @andrewwilson8317 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    You seriously need some stout leather gloves if you ping to be handling that wire winch cable,it bites! I would also be reserved about choking a steel wire rope back on itself,better to use an axle strap and keep the wire straight as possible. Cool looking rig by the way.

    • @regsparkes6507
      @regsparkes6507 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ditto !
      Plus, I'd have that wire rope replaced with synthetic rope , such as Dynice rope. No whip, no sharp 'needles' , no stretch and a fraction of wire rope weight.
      But then again, if a person was to buy one of these vehicles, I guess these after market up-grades would follow.

    • @matthewschiebout9081
      @matthewschiebout9081 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And kinking the cable by tying it back to itself isn't a sustainable practice. Better to learn from their mistakes! Moral of the story, bring/buy winch accessories and practice using them at home. They never placed a damper on the cable either! Don't try this at your home folks, no safety precautions were followed. Or at least admit you're not safe and make sure not to share it on the Web for all to see.

    • @regsparkes6507
      @regsparkes6507 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Precisely !
      If you have the finances, almost anything is possible.
      My comment on the rope was prompted by those guys handling the wire rope with bare hands and, as Andrew (above) pointed out, one NEVER wraps a wire rope around a tow point and back onto itself. That is a receipt for a nasty 'accident', is it not ?

    • @AkMedMan1

    These trucks are part of the MTV family, this is an lmtv. I used to be a 91B and have worked on many of these. The cat engine is rock solid, the rest of the truck is junk. This is an earlier generation. They are much less prone to electrical issues than the newer ones. The ctis will leak guaranteed. They always fail. The interior trim, heater controls will break. Those tires cost around 1k each unless you find some at a government liquidation sale. At Fort Carson they would fail on a weekly basis during the Colorado Winters. The deuce and a half are more maintainable for the average person than an lmtv.

    sorry but you are wrong the modes for the ctis system we correct except for the emergency mode it is for if you have a large leak it constantly pumps air into that tire to keep it inflated as much as possible to get you back .....I know this because I've been a diesel mechanic (63b) in the military for 14years

    • @richarde.6750
      @richarde.6750 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You at wrong, because I drove a concrete mixer with ctis. Deflated the tires will hole 35bs of air for driving on sand while loaded at 70,000lbs. If on sugar sand, you can go to emergency mode and drop the air to 25lbs when loaded. In Florida where we are on mostly sand, our trucks have less problems of getting stuck than a truck with 10 tires and all wheel drive.And a truck with ctis does not have all wheel drive. Just the back axles. But all tires deflate, fronts in emergency deflate to 25lbs and rears deflate to 30lbs.

    • @richarde.6750
      @richarde.6750 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      With ctis, the system will automatically maintain air in the tire if the system can maintain more air than the leak lets out, but the icon will appear to let the driver know of a problem with that tire.

    I'd like to know it's center of gravity for mountain and off-road travel. Does this have a 'tilt angle' gauge ? That might be useful because of the 13 foot height.

    • @TFLtruck
      @TFLtruck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Reg Sparkes That's a good question. We asked about it. The answer is : all water tanks, propane, and such are mounted low (below the floor). Center of gravity is lower than the visual height suggests.

It would probably have been safer and faster to just push the little truck out, but I guess they wanted to show off.

And don't believe the posted clearance (if they even have one posted), because many of them have been hit by high profile vehicles and not fixed, so there's usually a bent piece of metal or dip in the canopy that can lead to a loud, horrible crunching sound when you go under...don't ask me how i know!

      It's a licensed Steyr 12m18 produced in US for military purpose with US engine and transmission.
      The original is way better performing.

    to travel Africa you need trucks that can do 1000 miles per fill-up. This is 1/4 that. How is this an Expedition truck, more like an oversized mall crawler?

    150k, sounds a lot cheaper than what was it Ozark or that other imo over priced expedition vehicle. seems fair when compared with the customization to a regular motorhome.
