Jose Casas's (m2 designer) philosophy is supposed to be simplicity. That front end looks anything but simple. It's a hodgepodge of random shapes that don't flow together at all. A damn shame...all they had to do was "unsmush" the face of the prior gen M2, update the interior, and you've got a winner
Really nice car. I priced one out on the builder and it came out slightly cheaper than a Supra. Just factoring power, this positions itself against the Audi TTS, S4, S5, c43 amg, Supra, Z4, any 5.7l hemi, infiniti Q50/60 redsport, Kia stinger gt. Those are the cars that come to mind in this class of car.
It’s also objectively better then the Supra. Same engine, Four wheel drive (not technically “better” but it is faster. These will do 3.8 seconds 0-60), four seats, a much more practical and larger boot, and the interior is nicer.
6:56 You mention that M440i review and I wanted to let you know that video actually convinced me to get a F31 340i Touring here in Germany fitted with that power and sound package. It sounds so great and is an absolute hooligan. The best blend of practicality, power and inappropriate fun. Infact, you cannot even get that package retrofitted here anymore as it is just too loud acc. regulations. Anyway, thanks a lot for the great review of that niche spec back then and this one of the latest BMW now :)
that review convinced me to buy my 440i w m performance packages 1 & 2 sound noise wtv and then i did a stage 1 tune and for 3 years owners of m3/m4s would literally chase me along to find out why my car sounded better than theres and pulled infinitely harder.....then i sold it to a kid who did a stage 2 and wrapped it and w/in 1 month WRAPPED it around a light pole. RIP bud (the cars name) not his. he walked away.
I disagree. The M2 variations look good because they have a much more aggressive body kit however the non M2 cars from the previous generation look terrible in my opinion even the old 240i. Congrats for buying this car. I hope you have a lot of fun with it when it arrives
I picked one up a couple weeks ago. Ill be honest. Looking at photos and videos of the car doesn’t do it justice. I thought the front was gonna be just ok but when i saw it in person i was shocked about how much more aggressive it looks than online. I thought the kidney grills were gonna be flat but they are at an angle which makes it a little bit more aggressive. But what really shines is the power and the powertrain. The 8 speed is so good! I definitely think bmw is understating the performance numbers

Dislike the look of this new gen, love the performance bump. Interesting to see the same steering feel crossed over from last gen as well. Have a 2018 with x-drive / m-performance exhaust, ton of fun and a great bargain. Let's see that new M2! Great review gents
I don’t get it, you all keep trying to compare this to a M2??? This is a 240i you should be comparing it to the body lines and design of the outgoing 240i. Not the outgoing M2🤔. The old 240i and M2 don’t even look the same. Wait until the new gen M2 comes out to compare the old M2 because I’m positive the lines will be much different. I actually think it looks pretty good on film. 😳

As a BMW outsider, I actually think this car looks good. I typically don't follow BMW styling too closely, but to me this looks nicely proportioned, a little subtle but still fun. I'm sure the M2 will look good if this is its base.
I had this same problem with the previous gen BMW cars, but it's exacerbated with the newest crop: I really hate how they keep the designs looking unfinished or milquetoast until you step up to the full-blooded M variant. The M cars are such a different animal that they can't possibly be the universally appealing range-topper and I think BMW is catching onto that by making the M Performance variants the squishier "GT" alternative to the "race car" M experience, but the looks haven't kept pace. The small flourishes on the M4, for example, totally transform that design from Maytag to Maybach, but I have no use for the speed.
The first gen m240i . m2 , kinda looks cheap. It looks not complete in my opinion . Have you tried to look at the new m240i in person , maybe that will help. Also , dynamically, the new m240i 2022 , blows the older gen out of the water. Go drive one youll know what im talking about. Also , as a daily, interior refinement is 10x better. More refined ride in comfort mode, more NHV materials i.e less wind and road nose, and tech is huge if you drive it everyday.

I test drove the previous generation and couldn’t get over the steering feel. Felt too heavy and I definitely noticed the on centre feel issue. That was an x drive version tho as were in Canada.
I like most of the exterior styling and I think I could overlook the few things I don''t like about it. It is one of the better looking BMWs for 2022 and no manufacturer is really making a small, sporty 2 door coupe like this.
Right now I'm stuck between getting a 2016-2019 BMW 440i and the last gen M240i. I don't hate the new version, there are parts I like, but I just don't like how rectangular the car looks and how long the front end is. I've been rewatching your videos to help me decide between the two, I'm really excited to buy my first "newer" car and to have something I can comfortably drive year round with some decent power. So far I've only owed a 1999, 2007, 1994, and most recently a 1989. Love the vids guys, you are my go to for learning about new cars and finding out what may be worth purchasing. I’m biased, because I have a mineral white one in the garage. Shadowline , red interior. I think it looks great myself. Steering isn’t a responsive as you’d like but grip, power, wow
I was so excited for this car. I’m currently leasing a 2018 M2 and was debating buying that out when the lease was up next year depending on how this car looked. I’m buying out the M2…Hoping the new M2 looks better, comes with the S58 and manual.
I really appreciate how you mention the designers of the XM don’t care about offending internet commentators. Chris Harris has made this point multiple times of “let car manufacture tell US what’s good, not consumers demanding things which don’t make the car better and actually make it worse” . Love it. Let car manufacture do what they do best. If we love it great, if not, cool by us. Unfortunately money talks. And not in a way that supports a uniquely great engineering vehicle. But one that supports the masses of generic boring vehicles that all look and drive so similar.
The previous 2 series and in particular the M2 CS were soooo good in terms of design, that I cannot love this one. It's not bad, for sure, but I miss the previous one.
Yuri, there is no "finish line" with design language. You progress it enough until it evolves into a new language, and this new language BMW is speaking doesn't make a lick of fucking sense to me! Triangles! Sharp edges! Squiggles?! They took everything perfect about the outgoing model and spit on their fist-gripped pens and went to town. The rear is the largest offender IMO with all sorts of strange proportions and design cues that are absent anywhere else on the car. At least the headlights and tail lights flow, though they appear to be lifted from a different design entirely. And don't get me started on that greenhouse profile. This is just upsetting.
i respectively disagree. This new 240i looks way better than last gen 240i. It's a whole a lot more aggressive looking compared to last gen's soft looking. Especially when it's in action.

Great video guys felt very balanced. I’m a huge old two series fan having owned an OG M2 and now have a CS. I’m excited that this car seems to be decent enough to make a lot of people happy, but I’m bummed by a lot of the design features (lights, odd front splitter design, roofline). The exterior isn’t bad to my eye, I like it about as much as the old M240; every M2 looks better though. I think the old two series is more visually exciting from every angle especially from the side profile. The new one is ok but the lights blatantly ruin it and make it come across as goofy and unfocused looking. I’m sad to hear the steering is weird as well as they have had that fixed on the two series since 2016 when the OG M2 came out, and it is the best I’ve ever felt in a bmw in the CS.
@@Toymonkeyjr The problem with it being a future collectible is that nothing in the dash will work in 30 years--all those screens will be dead and there won't be any parts to fix them. People will have like the future equivalent of an iPad hooked up so you can have speedo. Watch Vice Grip Garage and look at how bad the old cars have aged on the inside and those have relatively simple mechanical everything.
I think they knocked it out of the park with this design. It's less "aggressive" but somehow more "muscular" all while feeling very modern / almost futuristic. The only aspect that I don't love is the large triangles in the front grille (seems like they were rushing and just threw some big angles to fill space). And that color....🤤.
I just test drove this car on small track course with the m performance package, what a ride! Not to mentioned the exhilarating ride of the m340i which is such a sleeper. Both great cars. Definitely looking forward to owning one!
The way it gradually lets you over power the rear wheels means that anyone can get into sliding("drifting"). BMW truly doing their best to provide the ultimate driving experience.
The steering feel is such a shame. I could never get over it in my M140i despite heavy mods with camber plates etc. So sad it is still the same in the new one. The M2 has a different steering, not just software and control arms. I think BMW does it on purpose so you can never turn a M-Lite into an M for sane money. Was the M340i really better?
The standard X3 steering is better despite there also being an X3M, so I don't think this has anything to do with preventing M Performance cars from being tuned into affordable M-beaters. I think it's just good, old-fashioned not-giving-a-shit because they are going to sell like gangbusters either way.
I like this two series, I think it's 'good different'. Really nice interior, a lot better than shiny piano black (nice macro shots of the interior trim guys👍). The color is good different too.

I’ve had mine a little over a week and love it. Only thing that’s bugs me is the auto engine shut off which is a pain in the arse. Pictures don’t do it justice looks way better in person
The mild hybrid in my M340 makes a huge improvement to the stop/start. Went from ultra-annoying in my ‘17 330 to something I don’t mind anymore. Plus shifting into M/S disables it in Comfort and Eco Pro also.
I always love the styling of new BMW’s. Their styling is always daring or new. It’s never evolutionary. People always hate on them and ten years later, we realise they actually look spectacular! Even the bangle butt BMW’s look good now!! So in my opinion BMW styling is ahead of its time
The E46 was really the last good 3-Series. The E90s were just okay, and the F30s are just awful. BMWs are for showy, aspirant middle class types anyways. They were never anything else.
I’m glad it looks different. Honestly, most previous BMW’s all looked way too similar to me and a bit boring, besides some earlier M3’s. I loved the first gen 1 series, so it’s funny that the one reviewer disliked that too. This is the first BMW I may actually buy. I do agree that the exhaust tips are a fail. Thanks for the review!

Yeah,new RS3 or ttrs. This is insane value considering the under reporting of power, 0-60 in mid 3s, delimited it'll do 175 mph, that's before any mild tuning. It's the size the M3 should be, for half the price

Well I Think that the looks comparison is a bit unfair (M240i compared to M2) because a M240I from last Gen looks in my opinion not as fancy as the new one.
I don’t get how people don’t like the looks? The hoods longer, the backs shorter, the big grill in the m3 is ugly to me. The front of this reminds me of the 4door m6. Which is definitely a great looking car
Front looks a little worse, side looks as good, back looks much worse. And they blew it on the back seats. But the engine is a peach. I’ve got the M340 and love that engine.
I love this car can’t wait to get one in a few years. The purple is stunning and the car is a head turner with how the back looks. Interior is a 7/10 for me I liked my 2015 2 series more but the bigger screen is nice
Come on, the car looks fantastic! When you look at it from the side, it has great proportions: a heavy-looking frontend and a heavy-looking rearend are well balanced, the height of the window compared to the height of the doors is perfect, and this nice smooth curve in the roofline looks great. The flat grill is cool, although the triangle-shaped front part below the grill looks still a bit weird to me, but not bad. In general, it manages somehow to combine smooth and angular shapes in a consistent way: the classic and the modern. I love it and I want one. Aha, this violet colour is awful. I'd go for black or white.

When talking about the exterior I’m really surprised you didn’t mention how aggressive and “M” it looks (wide arches, hood, mirrors) compared to the old M240. Which leads into my surprise that you kept comparing it to the M2CS vs prev gen M240 - that’s not really apples to apples. As an M2C owner I’m pretty impressed at how aggressive this is for an “M-lite” car and despite thinking it looks worse than an M2/C/CS I think it looks better than the old M240i.

I have a 2018 340i with that exhaust (MPPSK) it sounds glorious! I even have a high flow cat downpipe, sounds incredible
I like the last gen but this one hit me differently,I think I love the change.
This thing is muscular and sleek at the same time and the performance is really good. I drove one three days ago and ordered one in blue.

The previous 2 series and in particular the M2 CS were soooo good in terms of design, that I cannot love this one. It's not bad, for sure, but I miss the previous one.
The front lights on the previous one are to long and narrow, the side profile is better on this one.

Yuri, there is no "finish line" with design language. You progress it enough until it evolves into a new language, and this new language BMW is speaking doesn't make a lick of fucking sense to me! Triangles! Sharp edges! Squiggles?! They took everything perfect about the outgoing model and spit on their fist-gripped pens and went to town. The rear is the largest offender IMO with all sorts of strange proportions and design cues that are absent anywhere else on the car. At least the headlights and tail lights flow, though they appear to be lifted from a different design entirely. And don't get me started on that greenhouse profile. This is just upsetting.

i respectively disagree. This new 240i looks way better than last gen 240i. It's a whole a lot more aggressive looking compared to last gen's soft looking. Especially when it's in action.

Not enough people are saying it - that grille is UGLY! Much worse than the new M3/M4's in my opinion.
I absolutely hated the looks at first like everybody else, but I hate to admit that the looks are seriously growing on me. Still definitely a downgrade from previous gen however
I think it's a big upgrade. The proportions were a bit off on the old 2, looks better now.
I'd say its more like "getting used to it". Just get a M340i and wait for the M2.

The looks are FINALY something new and not the old bmw look they had since 20 years.
and the x drive u can just delete with a hit of a button on your phone with XHP's Xdelete app.. so u basicly have both, a AWD winter beast and a fun RWD togue drifter. (and ur mad about it hooking up? leaving "patches of rubber" would be more fun... if u had a m240 with RWD u guys would just say "Man its not that fast from a stand still..." pls get a grip)
I bought one and i LOVE it + the infotainment is 200000x better than the old bmw's.

Great video guys felt very balanced. I’m a huge old two series fan having owned an OG M2 and now have a CS. I’m excited that this car seems to be decent enough to make a lot of people happy, but I’m bummed by a lot of the design features (lights, odd front splitter design, roofline). The exterior isn’t bad to my eye, I like it about as much as the old M240; every M2 looks better though. I think the old two series is more visually exciting from every angle especially from the side profile. The new one is ok but the lights blatantly ruin it and make it come across as goofy and unfocused looking. I’m sad to hear the steering is weird as well as they have had that fixed on the two series since 2016 when the OG M2 came out, and it is the best I’ve ever felt in a bmw in the CS.

I'm an old 3-Series fan, which is what this car actually is size-wise, it's right there with the E46 and even the E36.
@@Toymonkeyjr The problem with it being a future collectible is that nothing in the dash will work in 30 years--all those screens will be dead and there won't be any parts to fix them. People will have like the future equivalent of an iPad hooked up so you can have speedo. Watch Vice Grip Garage and look at how bad the old cars have aged on the inside and those have relatively simple mechanical everything.

As a f series 2 owner, I originally hated the looks of the 2er but it’s definitely beginning to grow on me.
The same is happening to me, but the side and the back do not match the front :(
I think they knocked it out of the park with this design. It's less "aggressive" but somehow more "muscular" all while feeling very modern / almost futuristic. The only aspect that I don't love is the large triangles in the front grille (seems like they were rushing and just threw some big angles to fill space). And that color....🤤.
I just test drove this car on small track course with the m performance package, what a ride! Not to mentioned the exhilarating ride of the m340i which is such a sleeper. Both great cars. Definitely looking forward to owning one!

If it doesn’t instantly grab you and you have to think about whether it’s good looking, it’s usually not.
The way it gradually lets you over power the rear wheels means that anyone can get into sliding("drifting"). BMW truly doing their best to provide the ultimate driving experience.

The steering feel is such a shame. I could never get over it in my M140i despite heavy mods with camber plates etc. So sad it is still the same in the new one.
The M2 has a different steering, not just software and control arms. I think BMW does it on purpose so you can never turn a M-Lite into an M for sane money.
Was the M340i really better?
I have a 340 and the steering after adding extra bracing with cross members improved dramatically.

The standard X3 steering is better despite there also being an X3M, so I don't think this has anything to do with preventing M Performance cars from being tuned into affordable M-beaters. I think it's just good, old-fashioned not-giving-a-shit because they are going to sell like gangbusters either way.

I like this two series, I think it's 'good different'. Really nice interior, a lot better than shiny piano black (nice macro shots of the interior trim guys👍). The color is good different too.

I’ve had mine a little over a week and love it. Only thing that’s bugs me is the auto engine shut off which is a pain in the arse. Pictures don’t do it justice looks way better in person
The mild hybrid in my M340 makes a huge improvement to the stop/start. Went from ultra-annoying in my ‘17 330 to something I don’t mind anymore. Plus shifting into M/S disables it in Comfort and Eco Pro also.
That’s what sport mode is for, put in sport mode and sport transmission mode and autostop goes away

BMW shifts in their 8 sp auto are so fast…like PDK fast. The straight 6 hp is so underrated. Dyno that. Guaranteed it’s 10% under.
I always love the styling of new BMW’s. Their styling is always daring or new. It’s never evolutionary. People always hate on them and ten years later, we realise they actually look spectacular! Even the bangle butt BMW’s look good now!! So in my opinion BMW styling is ahead of its time
Can’t wait for the New M2 , I had the N55 M2 and it was awesome. I now have a Supra that has the same engine as this M240 and it’s great power!

The E46 was really the last good 3-Series. The E90s were just okay, and the F30s are just awful. BMWs are for showy, aspirant middle class types anyways. They were never anything else.
The old 2 series was already e46 size.

I’m glad it looks different. Honestly, most previous BMW’s all looked way too similar to me and a bit boring, besides some earlier M3’s. I loved the first gen 1 series, so it’s funny that the one reviewer disliked that too. This is the first BMW I may actually buy. I do agree that the exhaust tips are a fail. Thanks for the review!
I didn't really like the look at first, but have warmed up to it and like it now. Nonetheless, it's the engineering that excites me about it, looks are just a bonus.

Yeah,new RS3 or ttrs. This is insane value considering the under reporting of power, 0-60 in mid 3s, delimited it'll do 175 mph, that's before any mild tuning. It's the size the M3 should be, for half the price

Have you drive on the highway at all? You can move the wheel about a half inch in either direction and you will feel nothing

Well I Think that the looks comparison is a bit unfair (M240i compared to M2) because a M240I from last Gen looks in my opinion not as fancy as the new one.
I don’t get how people don’t like the looks? The hoods longer, the backs shorter, the big grill in the m3 is ugly to me. The front of this reminds me of the 4door m6. Which is definitely a great looking car

I love this car can’t wait to get one in a few years. The purple is stunning and the car is a head turner with how the back looks. Interior is a 7/10 for me I liked my 2015 2 series more but the bigger screen is nice
Come on, the car looks fantastic! When you look at it from the side, it has great proportions: a heavy-looking frontend and a heavy-looking rearend are well balanced, the height of the window compared to the height of the doors is perfect, and this nice smooth curve in the roofline looks great. The flat grill is cool, although the triangle-shaped front part below the grill looks still a bit weird to me, but not bad. In general, it manages somehow to combine smooth and angular shapes in a consistent way: the classic and the modern. I love it and I want one.

When talking about the exterior I’m really surprised you didn’t mention how aggressive and “M” it looks (wide arches, hood, mirrors) compared to the old M240. Which leads into my surprise that you kept comparing it to the M2CS vs prev gen M240 - that’s not really apples to apples.
As an M2C owner I’m pretty impressed at how aggressive this is for an “M-lite” car and despite thinking it looks worse than an M2/C/CS I think it looks better than the old M240i.
