Time to float down here and talk about the classic 1990 TV adaptation of Stephen King's IT. Often times this mini-series is highly debated in the horror community as either terrifying nostalgia or a miserably botched adaptation. As someone who grew up watching IT and being genuinely terrified of Tim Curry's interpretation of Pennywise, here is how my thoughts have changed watching this movie as an adult...

Tim Curry will always be Pennywise. i did enjoy the remake of IT. I didn't think Bill did a bad job playing Pennywise, my problem with his versions is that they tried so hard to make him look scary as a clown. Tim Curry's pennywise looked like a normal clown which to me makes him more scary. but anyways love both versions. but the 1990s version gets 1 more point over the remake because of Tim Curry

I totally agree Cody. Tim Curry is a far more affective and iconic Pennywise, not to say that Skarsgard was not good. Curry managed to scare the hell out of me all through my childhood, Skarsgard did not once- but he still played the part well. My opinion.

I know the book is huge but seriously dude read it. It’s amazing and absolutely frightening. The book really does expand more regarding the story of Mike. I was disappointed when they didn’t include the part were mike gets chased by the giant bird/eagle. One of the best parts of the book and they have never replicated it! Good review as always bud. Keep it up.
I'm 32. I've watched the original IT several times throughout my life and have always loved it. Didn't care too much for the remake. I actually read the book IT when I was in the 8th grade and thought it was better than the movie. I got a 100 on the Accelerated Reader test back then cause I had already watched the movie several times haha. My reading teacher told me 'great job' when she saw my score. I laughed inside though cause I knew I had basically cheated. Just wanted to share that little story. Great review.
Tim Curry is the better Pennywise the Dancing Clown and I like the 90’s version better than the New version but don’t get me wrong I do like the New Version
watching Tim Curry taunt, cackle, tell jokes and make a racket on that bannister absolutely kills me, I don't know how anyone there was able to go about without reacting to him, I'd have been creasing myself constantly xD

For me, I grew up with the double VHS taped amazingness of IT and I love it so much. There's something about the 1990 version that holds itself above the movie for me. I can look at the movie and go "Cool, they did a good job." and move on. The 1990 version I can watch over and over and just have a good time and also I feel no one can touch Tim Curry's Pennywise, Bill did a good job but Tim Curry is a fucking legend and you don't compare where you don't compete LOL Now, I've always felt too that the second half of the movie wasn't as awesome as the first half and that giant spider was a mess haha and yesssssss Sister, Sister!!

What always hits me about the movie is the portrayal of Derry. The scenery, the costuming, the people of the town ... there is some uncanny but also very relatable about it.
Wow ,pennywise and Zelda both gave me nightmares too.

Nice review, Cody! I wish I had seen this as a kid so I could have the childhood nostalgia for it that so many people have! I didn't watch it until after I read the book in junior high and by that age, the glaring issues of the second half already stuck out enough to drag it down for me. I like the kids and some moments are great (like the moving picture), but wow do the adult Losers Club moments feel stilted.
By the way, I'm so glad you made the Sister Sister reference. That's what I always think of the first time Tim Reid pops up too.
I like Mike too but he definitely is the exposition character...

36 years old and saw it when it first aired back in the day. I think the film only means something to us 30 somethings who were children when it aired. But we can agree Tim Curry is the only reason the remake happened. Tommy Lee Wallace hated the giant spider as it didn't come out as intended, but it was a low budget tv movie. Tim Curry is terrifying and his performance is still chilling.
This is my favorite review of you Cody!! Love this one even what other people think i still watch this one over 2017 version (Thats also a good version) But this one has a special place in my heart!!!

This is still a classic, I think we can all agree that they messed up bad with that giant spider. However, I still think it’s a masterpiece for Tim Curry’s performance alone.
That's cool brother, you can get enjoyment out of things from a movie that I don't but I think it is far from a masterpiece. Although Tim Curry was great in the role, everything else was pretty dull and boring or just way too over the top.
@suny123boy1 Oh. Excuse me! That is just my freaking name. Also, I don't like that character of Captain Marvel very much. As much as I enjoy most of those movies, I do not put them in this discussion. And also, I stand by it, that miniseries is far from a masterpiece. The first half with the children is fine, but the second half with the adults is stupid. Tim Curry is mostly the saving grace for that miniseries. It is not that scary, and most of the actors, especially as the adults were terribly over the top and had laughable drama. Also, it goes way too out of its way to make balloons scary. Complain about jump scares all you want, but the remake is far creepier than the old one because Bill Skarsgard made Pennywise something unsettling in a fantastic performance. However, that is not the main attraction. The main attraction is that it is a coming of age story and focuses on the fears that these characters have.

The spider could have been made better, thats for sure. Since you haven't read the novel, the spider thing would throw you off. Its explanation is since nobody can see IT's purest form, the spider is the closest thing the mind will allow.
Roger Hendrix a fellow scholar like myself lol. The book delves into so much that only the mind can imagine. Both are decent adaptations, but if you’ve read the book 1st, it’s a tough comparison.

Just like I said in Lee's review, it wasn't for Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise, the entire series would terrible, not just second part. I won't even talk about that FUCKING PAPER MACHE SPIDER!!!

One thing this adaptation did that was better than the newer one was set the film in 1960 (the late 50s with a hangover) and 1990 (the late 80s with a hangover) thus, making it a lot closer to the novel. Sure, I don't mind the 1989 setting in the new one but the 50s were a more innocent decade than the 80s.

I grew up with this film, for me it's timeless It's the only film that I can watch anyday. So many fun memories with that miniseries. My favorite film of all time!

Besides the Georgie scene with Pennywise the things that scared me the most was the Beverly Marsh sink scene and the shower scene growing up every time I was taking a shower or brushing my teeth more so at night I was just terrified I wanted to finish as soon as I possibly could cuz I was afraid voices or a hand was going to come out of the drain

my greatest fear is you getting age restricted i thought this was a very funny movie and i watched this after the remake the scene that scared me was Stanley's death the music the raiser in his arm and the reaction just scared me and still does and at the time of this comment being posted i am 15 great movie you are still my favorite TH-camr
Just reviewed this as well. Currie's performance as Pennywise is definitely a character that would scare the hell our of young kids- he's much more humanistic, yet still has a monstrous vibe.
My brother also pointed out that Bill Skarsgard waa struggling a bit with the English language. I never noticed it before, but the cadence of his speech is definitely different from Curry's (he also talks less than Curry does overall)

Just watched the 1990 It last night and I totally agree with your sentiment on the older version of Ritchie (joke guy) not landing. He was so annoying and I wanted him to go away in every scene

IT 1990 Miniseries was my very first Horror Movie and I was fucking terrified and scarred for life when I saw it for the first time as an 7 years old kid.
Now after reading the book and watching the 2017 version I have some good and bad things to say about it.
The first half of this movie is really the only effective part. When they start off with the story of a bunch of kids that banded together to fight the monster called "IT" and when they kill it, make a pact that if "IT" ever comes back they will reunite again to fight it. This first half centers on the kid actors and they are a talented bunch. They do a great job of setting up the second half, that you know is going to involve them as adults. Also, Tim Curry is very effective and terrifying as Pennywise the dancing clown. He is just awesome as this character.
Once we get to the second half and the kids are all grown up and coming back to the town to deal with "IT" the story goes out of rails. The adult actors were all just terrible in my opinion, especially adult Bill played by Richard "John Boy Walton" Thomas. I wasn't impressed by any of them and kept thinking about the kid actors and how much I wished they were around.
But the biggest flaw with the movie is when the adults go and combat "IT" for the last time. Talking about anti-climatic. I mean this is just a big letdown and an insult for anybody who read the book.
God! I hope the people behind the new IT don't fuck up this BAD in Chapter 2 like the Miniseries did in the second half.
After watching Chapter 2 last night... I think the 1990 version is the best.
One thing I disagree with Lee is his feeling towards the mini series and towards Tim Curry's Pennywise.

I agree Zelda and Tim in this are scary! but one character that was really un nerving for me to watch and gave me the heebie-jeebies was Reverend Kane portrayed by Julien Back in Poltergeist II

I actually read the book in 5 days just before the new one came out and I’m not a reader! You should read it Cody! It’s so good!
Tim Curry has been my favorite actor since I was 2 years old, more because of Rocky Horror but his Pennywise performance is just as iconic. He never scared me however because I knew the man under the clown as my favorite transvestite alien 🤣 IT, Rocky Horror, Legend, Clue, even Home Alone 2 all are on rotation in my house. Chucky as well. We have alot in common Cody 😁
If you take the time to read the novel, you’ll be pleased with the suspense and thrill and things that stick with you in ways no on screen version can achieve. Start with walking tours Bev’s chapter
Late af to the party, but the novel will scar you for life. Obviously it's way better.. but certain parts of it.. make you question Stephen King's sanity. That being said, I still highly recommend you read it or at least listen to the audiobook.

Outside of the spider, the 2nd half was pretty good. Just the spider was kind of lame, even when I was 7, watching it on the tv debut. I forgave it ok enough back then, but even then, I knew.
The 2nd half of the film is the only thing that ruins it for me. Everything else is great. Awesome review man! I'll check out Lee's soon.
As someone whose currently into the book and is through most of it, I'm going on a premature limb as to say that book IT is scariest.
I have to say IT because he's only Pennywise whenever he's the clown.
So far I'd say the scariest part is when kid Mike visits the old iron works ruins and finds IT waiting for him in a hole in the ground taking the form of a huge black bird with bat wings I think it has.
The ruins are very isolated far in a field and pretty much a good ways from the town. Mike is completely alone, his only cover is a smoke stack chimney thing that's partially buried in the ground. IT can't get in because he's to big to fit through the only way in or out so, IT just waits on top pacing back and forth waiting for Mike to come out.
Anyway, I much prefer Tim Curry Pennywise. I believe Skarsgard didn't do as good as most people think, but probably because they don't know the book very well.
As much as I loved Curry's performance and still do, I now know he's actually having too much fun with his role. So far, book Pennywise isn't talking that much at all. He does talk, but I can feel a sense of reservness about him even when he's being very vulgar.
Skarsgard I just didn't like period. He came off as a complete try hard. I even knew that before starting the book and now that I'm so far into the story it actually makes Skarsgard's performance even worse. Also, that fucking projector scene. Skarsgard moving his jaw over, biting his lip was fucking stupid. It wasn't scary, it wasn't funny, just stupid as fuck.
I do actually like his look. It does look scary, but that's the problem. It's not supposed to be scary. The clown suit should visually be happy, colorful, and inviting. So, the constant creepy delivery of Skarsgard's lines isn't helping. It's too much and he's trying way too hard, but I can say that if this wasn't an IT movie the killer clown aspect would have been better. He just doesn't pull off the character of Pennywise for me personally.
I saw this movie on tv in it's original airing in November 1990. I had just turned 13 the previous month and had been watching horror movies for years by this point, so the movie didn't scare me at all, but I agree with you about Zelda from Pet Sematary. I saw that movie in the theater in 1989 when I was 11 and her performance was fucking creepy as hell.
On the DVD commentary track, the actors and actresses note that Tim Curry's characterization of Pennywise was so creepy and realistic that everyone avoided him during the filming.
In the novel, Beverly makes love to all of "The Lucky Seven", but Tommy Lee Wallace omitted it from this mini-series because it was just something that didn't ring true to him.
Jonathan Brandis and John Ritter both died in 2003. Brandis hanged himself, while Ritter suffered an unexpected, fatal aortic dissection.
Richard Masur only appeared in three scenes.
This mini-series came out in 1990, the same year that Bill Skarsgård was born. Skarsgård played Pennywise in It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019).
In the novel, the group is not referred to as "The Lucky Seven". They call themselves "The Losers' Club".
John Ritter was a huge Stephen King fan.
In the novel, Eddie Kaspbrak lives with his wife Myra, not his mother.
The American rock band Pennywise took its name from the character.
Harry Anderson (Richie Tozier) died on April 16, 2018, the same week Bill Hader entered talks to play Richie Tozier in It Chapter Two (2019).
Tim Curry is not in the last fifteen minutes of this mini-series.
All 7 actors portraying the adult versions of "The Losers' Club" have either been nominated for or won either an Emmy or a Golden Globe.
Tom Rogan has a much bigger part in the novel. He chases Beverly to Derry where Pennywise tries to get him to kill "The Lucky Seven". He eventually dies from shock after seeing the Deadlights.
I appreciate what you do, but would like to add another way of looking at penny wise at the end. From reading the book, penny wise is a shapeshifter, and is why the miniseries portrayed him as such.
However, I agree that when changing mediums, the creator has to account for the different way they have to portray the story so it makes sense.

Great review bro, but I definitely prefer the 2017 Remake. Tim Curry is awesome as Pennywise, but the new version is miles better than the original. The main reason why people love the original is just because of nostalgia, because when I went back and saw it, I couldn’t believe I loved it as a kid.

I don't think the spider scene was a case of problems with adaptation; I think that didn't work particularly well in the book, either. The low-rent effects certainly didn't help it, though.
Also, two words: aspect ratio.
In the books it was only a spider because that was the closest thing that the minds of the ones who saw it could interpret what they saw.
Has anyone seen the 70s TV movie The Night Stalker? The vampire in that movie haunted my dreams for years! He still creeps me out even today when I watch it! I was around 9 or 10 when I watched it.
I still like this movie. I think this was the first Stephen King movie I saw (probably around the time I lived in Maine, ironically). I was never scared of the movie. I'm not scared of clowns so Tim Curry didn't scare me. I am however TERRIFIED of spiders. Even the ending wasn't scary to me as a kid with the giant spider. I like all of the kids' performances and I like most of the adults as well. One thing I hate about both adaptations is that Stan is underused. I guess being the first one to die means you get less development. He's underused to the point that you didn't even mention him in the review! Part 2 didn't do much for me. Build-up to nothing. There's still good moments in it though. Part 1 is vastly superior.
That said, I still love the movie. I like the 2017 version much more. The book is excellent. Even if you don't have the patience to read the book, I'd recommend listening to the audiobook, which is read by Steven Weber (who also played Jack Torrance in the 1997 miniseries The Shining and Clark Rivingham in an episode of Nightmares and Dreamscapes, both Stephen King adaptations).
I saw this when it premiered. I was never really afraid of Pennywise. I think it was the bright colors they used. I liked the spider as a kid. Thought it was a cool monster. R.I.P.John Ritter.
Yay a movie review of the first horror movie I ever saw. This scared the crap out of me when I was 5 years old in 1990. It made me scared of clowns. I loved Richard Thomas in this one I watched him in The Waltons with my grandma as a kid. I watch it all the time cause I love torturing my mom with it. I love this movie now. I didn't watch it again until I was a teenager. I avoided it for 7 years after the first showing but when I rented it from my local video store I realized it was actually good but clowns still scare me. I read the book too. I checked it out from the library 4 times just to finish it cause the hardback was so huge.
A little late to the party (well, more than a little), but I do love this miniseries, for what it is. It doesn't scare me as much as it did as a kid, but it has a special place in my heart. Considering how graphic and massive the book is, there's no way that a TV miniseries from 1990 could even include the more gruesome and controversial aspects. Tim Curry is rightly considered a standout, but the child actors were great too. Nothing against the older actors, but they weren't as interesting (even the director Tommy Lee Wallace said as much).

That was a great reviews as to me I wish they add with a new it version sequel in the it pit to show a demon figure to come after a adults as a different shape as a bettlejuice snake or also a Lucifer from a legends classic film I'm very sure that will work on a it sequel what you think of

Tim Curry will always be Pennywise to me. I think bill says guard. Did a good job too. For us 90's kids had the best It. We had John Ritter and Richard Thomas. The remake wasn't bad. Look at the crow. No one can beat Brandon Lee. Don't mess with the original.
I read the book It several times in the mid 90s when I was in high school, and I loved it. I remember hiding in my hallway while my parents watched the miniseries so that I wouldn't get in trouble for being up late, so my memories are hazy. One thing that I will say that I love in the movie version from 2017 and 2019 over the book is how awesome and funny Eddie is. The book version is such a little bitch, but the movie version really made him step up his game, and I loved him for it.
