When you rubbed on the alcohol, my mouth dropped open. I've never seen a natural wood this beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous! Your concept and end result are perfect, giving us a stunning vase. I'm honestly in awe about this piece, Mike. Truly remarkable!!
I have to agree that this is a museum quality piece of art. I love woodworking pieces, but this one is beyond typical. You have such artistic vision and the ability that is needed to make that vision real. It has an amazing form, and it’s just stunningly beautiful, Mike. If I were to win that piece I would be over the moon! It’s so special! ❤
Thanks Richard, I just hope it helps people understand the design process a bit more and it's ok to change your mind or make a mistake, it's all about learning 😀
A love and, an understanding of remarkable wood is a gift not given to us all, but my goodness, you have it in spades. It was both remarkable and, a pleasure to watch, and of course, to listen to your commentary, an important must for mere observers to learn. As an old saying goes, “it’s not so much what you are looking at, but, what you see”. Thank you Mike Holton, I shall be forever grateful.
That's gorgeous - I will never tire of hearing the almost giddy excitement in your voice when contemplating the possibilities of a striking piece of wood like that!
This wood is so gorgeous. When you give this bowl away you will have to order another piece of this wood to make something for yourself. I have never seen a woodturner enjoy a piece of wood as much as you enjoyed working with this. Congratulations, this is beautiful.
Mr. Holton, I started watching your videos when I was stuck at home. (I had cancer and yes I have recovered!). I've recently been able to return to work 👍. I love the enthusiasm you have for the beauty of wood. It truly comes through the videos! Thank you for all the enjoyment you have given me and so many others!
That piece of wood started out absolutely gorgeous, but the first time you cleaned it with isopropyl, the grain almost made the wood look fluid it had so much motion in it. I 100% agree with one of the other commenters who said your piece was museum quality. It appears to be such a simple design, but it truly lets the wood shine through. Nicely done Mike.
10:44 Oh my god... i don't think you ever had a reveal with the Isopropol as stunning as this. The Grain is like a visual explosion, what an amazing wood!
I was going to ask how much but first thing I saw was the cost. That’s a lot of money! I started turning 7 months ago when I retired. I have turned over 100 pieces from Christmas ornaments to bowls, platters and boxes. I think I have watched every video you have made and have copied many of the pieces you have done. I really appreciate the explanations. You do fantastic work and have helped me understand and learn… thank you so much
Complete stunner! And there's no way I could have come up with such a shape! Absolutely brilliant! Your appreciation of us subscribers is really amazing -- thank you!😊❤😊🎉🎉🎉
What an incredible piece. The curves play off each other, so subtle. Beyond the beauty, my favorite part of watching your videos is hearing you think aloud--learning about all the decisions that transform a square block of wood into something otherworldly. And yes, I waaaaant this!
Mike, congratulations on hitting the 40K mark. You deserve every follower and more. I've been watching you from nearly the beginning and you have done nothing but amaze me with your work every week. You took a gorgeous block of wood and did such a great job making something that is worth all of our admiration. Someone will love this piece for years to come!
What a beautiful piece !!!. Aren’t we the lucky ones to have your skill and vision available to see at a push of a button. Never ceases to amaze me how you come up with these wonderful ideas…
Enjoying your videos is reward enough. I was a little skeptical of this turn until I saw the finished work of art. You created something that subverted my expectations and turned out more beautiful than I anticipated. It was impressive that you designed it as an eye catch to bring you in with curiosity and reward you for it when you are close enough to behold it. Whoever wins it is lucky to have a piece of you with them.
I've been watching your channel for a while and this is the first time I felt I needed to comment. What beautiful wood! Just amazing. And you could have made anything out of it and it would gave been gorgeous. But the fact that you made such a unique design, well, I'm beyond words. You are a true artist. Hi Mike! I think we should start calling you “The Wood Whisperer “! As you have a magic touch and empathy with every piece of wood I’ve seen you touch!! When you first unwrapped it, I thought it was spalted beech or similar, trying to look at the pattern. I’ve never seen London Plane cut down, but my goodness! Isn’t it beautiful! And your imagination did it proud…such a beautiful result, almost like a delicate Vase you see the Japanese use for their three twig delicate arrangements- called Ikebana! ! I haven’t disliked or found fault with a single piece I’ve seen you turn, but this, as you said, was the most beautiful piece of wood in raw state, but transformed to absolutely stunning, by the time you had finished! @@helencheadle5709 Hi Helen, so so sorry to hear about your son, I can't even begin to imagine how hard it must have been and still is. Our children are everything to us, we have three sons and a daughter, we also have two foster daughters who have lived with us for over 5 years. Holm oak is probably my favourite wood, I first turned a piece a couple of years ago and was amazed by the grain it is so unique! Where we live now I have a holm oak in the back garden and it's huge are beautiful, I keep getting tempted to take off a limb to do something with but not sure my landlord would be too happy lol. I have had to put a clock close to my lathe so I can keep an eye on the time or I could get into rouble lol. Thanks again for your message and love and best wishes to you and your family, Mike
WOW ! This is out of this world - the wood is amazing , the design is stunning and the fact that the wood is of English origin makes it even better. You are a superstar! Congratulations on 40k 🥂
Comments are easy to make but this piece was exceptionally well thought out. The shape was quite different and really brought together the wood grain - "a dream spun from nature’s loom"
When I saw the grain, my first thought was that it’s “natural habitat” ought to have been a museum or palace - as if it must have had lived several generations in aristocracy before coming to our attention. It has an ageless quality about it. Wonderful!
Oh wow Mike, You have done it again! This beautiful wood and the resulting vase has once again taken my breath away! Who ever wins this magnificent piece of art will not only be extremely lucky and blessed but envied by all! Especially me! 😊❤ ❤ lol I have never seen wood as intriguing as this. With it being half oriental in origin and your design having that Japanese look to it, you truly have brought out this woods natural beauty. Then you always do with every piece you make. I love it! I can see those scent sticks in it so as not to take away from this beauty. 😊❤ Good Luck all in this fantastic and extremely generous giveaway. Once again Mike thank you for sharing your creative genius with us all 😊❤
That is so unusual. I love the colour. I learned a poem about trees many, many years ago. The last few lines were ‘The plane tree is kind to the poor dull city I love her Most of all!’
Child's Song In Spring (1895) The silver birch is a dainty lady, She wears a satin gown; The elm tree makes the old churchyard shady, She will not live in town. The English oak is a sturdy fellow, He gets his green coat late; The willow is smart in a suit of yellow, While brown the beech trees wait. Such a gay green gown God gives the larches - As green as He is good! The hazels hold up their arms for arches, When Spring rides through the wood. The chestnut’s proud and the lilac’s pretty, The poplar’s gentle and tall, But the plane tree’s kind to the poor dull city - I love him best of all!
Mike, that wood was worth every penny. It is amazing and i love your vision for it. Really unique piece of art. Whoever wins this beauty is very lucky indeed!!
Incredible wood grain. I had no idea how London Plain would turn out. Love the idea. Sometimes it is more important to show off the wood than the vase. ❤
OMG! That piece is absolutely stunning! Who would have thought that oblong piece of wood, could've been turned (excuse the pun) into something so beautiful! You are a master, Sir! I was mesmerised watching it morph into the work of art you produced and anyone, indeed everyone, would be proud to own it. ❤
My great grandfather did a lot of woodworking, seeing this video makes me wonder what he would have done with material like this! I’m sure he would have enjoyed watching this as well and seeing the finished project
You are very generous. 🥰 I'll bet that absolutely gorgeous vase is hard to give away! Thank you for all of your hard work... both in your shop and here on TH-cam. And congratulations 🎉🥳 on reaching 40 THOUSAND subscribers. That is quite the feat.
Hi Mike, you made a shining poem out of this magic piece of wood. So beautiful. Your artwork inspires me so much. Thank you. Marita from Cologne, Germany.
I would have to say that this piece of wood was worth every 'penny', it is absolutely beautiful Mike. As always, it was delightful to see & hear you as you set out to make 'something different' within your chosen field. The actual piece as finally presented is an absolute success. You have, as it were, thought outside the square to extend yourself & that is always a good thing. You are 'spot on' when talking about the beauty of this wood, hence my opening comment. SO, beautiful wood, beautiful design of the vase + beautiful finish applied = 'WINNER'. Thanks for sharing this piece with us Mike. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
Thanks as always Don, it is a real honour to be able to get hold of wood like this to work on, it honestly makes my like easy as it does all the work for me. 😀
Well that's really lovely. I thought you would go for a bowl, something safe for the expensive wood, but you came up with an absolutely exquisite and unusual little vase that wouldn't be out of place in a gallery. If you are getting these ideas out of your head then in my opinion you are a really gifted designer. Of all the woodturner's I've seen on TH-cam you stand out as being really special. Well done indeed.
That is the most beautiful wood i have ever seen. I never heard of it before now. My wife is taking agriculture classes for sustainable living and she gave me a long run down on it. I love the floating look to the piece. Well done!
Hi All, as I'm sure someone is bound to ask, I'll tell you all now, this piece of wood cost me just under £250 😊
Wow!
Will you also do a piece for yourself and your family? ❤
As we say in Africa . . . . Eiiiish!!!
Wow Mike, that is such a honor that you would spend that much on us subscribers! Thank you for showing how much you appreciate us all😊

I’m American and never heard of this wood, thanks for the lesson!
You're welcome Debbie 😀
Great to meet you at Harrogate today!
The wood is stunning and really well showcased with this piece!
Hi Jiggsy, you too and thanks! I have just subscribed to your channel and will check it out. All the best my friend 😀
I've never heard of that word before, but I'm in love with it.
Me too, it's my first time turning it 😀
Outstanding! Someone will treasure that one.
Hope so Scott, it could be you 😀
Well worth the cost. You created a piece that shows off that grain pattern beautifully. Love the shape.
..
Thanks so much 😀
The markings in the wood are just remarkable!
Thanks, I still can't stop looking at it lol 😀
The pattern and finish is very rich and almost looks antique. Love it.
Thanks so much 😀
Mike, you found a lovely shape in a lovely piece of wood. Can’t wait to see what you can do with the other half!
Thanks Mike, me too 😀
I mean…stunning. Love hearing you talk through your thoughts/process, and the amount of knowledge share you manage to include as well.
Thanks Gwynneth, I try my best 😀
Very pleased to see this. I have had a small off cut of London Plane Burl for many years and I am now inspired to actually make something out of it.
Thanks Arthur, have fun 😊
You are very generous. 🥰 I'll bet that absolutely gorgeous vase is hard to give away! Thank you for all of your hard work... both in your shop and here on TH-cam. And congratulations 🎉🥳 on reaching 40 THOUSAND subscribers. That is quite the feat.
Thanks so much I really appreciate it! 😀
Hi Mike, you made a shining poem out of this magic piece of wood. So beautiful.
Your artwork inspires me so much.
Thank you.
Marita from Cologne, Germany.
Thank you so much Marita 😀
Wow! Thanks so much David 😁
you've belted that one right out of the park Mike. Stunning
Thanks Adam 😀
That is the most beautiful wood i have ever seen. I never heard of it before now. My wife is taking agriculture classes for sustainable living and she gave me a long run down on it. I love the floating look to the piece. Well done!
Thanks Frank! That sounds like an interesting course your wife is on 😀
Such a nice surprise. We were not expecting a vase!! Very nice!!
Haha thanks JP 😀
The London Plane bowl is incredible. Such beautiful wood and you have exposed THE best of its grain😊
Thank you so much Kate😀
Never heard of london plane until today and my god that wood is beautiful and stunning.
