Really like the platter. The redwood pieces cut to give an illusion of flower petals is brilliant. The center piece saved a lot of resin too. You did a great job. 2 opinion thoughts that popped up for me as you made this great piece. I think I would have preferred the resin to be black or grey to give more of a line or shadow effect. Then, I’d apply more finish until there is an even sheen all the way across. It is difficult to get end grain full of finish. But adding finish on top of the OB Shine Juice should build quickly and give an even sheen all the way across the surface. But those are only my opinion. Very nice work Mike. Always a joy to watch your processes.
Thanks so much for your thoughts on this one Doug, when I get a bit more free time I'm going to put this back on the lathe and have a go at a better finish, all the best my friend, Mike
I really liked the long narrow knot in piece #2. I've seen a lot of other wood turners seeming to use exclusively carbides in their videos. What do you feel are the pros and cons of different tool tips?
Everything has its place and carbides can be very good in the right circumstances. The standard carbide tips all scrape rather than cut so the finish is generally worse. Negative rake tips leave a good finish on resin and the cupped tips are fantastic for deep hollowing.
All the color variations on this piece are super captivating. Really draws you in to the work. Redwood is such a beauty. You, my friend are climbing to the top of what TH-cam has to offer on wood turning videos. Just as i always knew you would. All the best dear brother.
@@MikeHolton I will certainly give it my best shot! So many changes this year. I’m afraid I’ve been battling with depression for the past few months. Became a bit of a recluse. @@k9insomniac783 So sorry for the delay getting back to you. Just back from holiday and trying to clear a few messages before I crash. I'm here if you need me in any way I can, keep going, nothing is forever.
It’s beautiful love the way you can use wood with flaws and bring out the colours. I would have liked without the blue resin, thought the copper was deeper and richer 🎉
@ That’s what I love about wood turning. It’s very seldom that I finish a piece and think “wow, I got this one right” or even care for what I’ve made. However, the wood tells a different story. The swirls in the grain, the colors and accents, and especially the abnormalities.. each piece is a snowflake. No matter how many things you make alike in shape or size, the wood stands out alone.
Nice platter Mike, great idea instead of not using the wood. Glad to see you remembering to put your ring guard on. Hope your family is having a great holiday. 😊❤
I just love the color of redwood, it has that lovely dark center and the lighter edge and the resin just adds a whole other dimension, beautiful work Mike enjoy your holiday
Love the pattern you created with the slices of wood. Wasn’t sure about your colour choices for the resin but they actually complimented the woods natural colour really well. 👏
Hi Mike, this was different by the way you used the wood pieces to make a turning blank. As always you kept the viewers well informed on what you were doing as you progressed, It turned out kind of special with its original design. Thanks for the video.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Do you remember all that controversy with the M and S cauliflower steak? You certainly sliced off some delicious Redwood steaks in the beginning; even before you did anything else this was going to be a winner. Your idea for how to put this together was so original and worked so well. It's obvious to the real woodturners, but I am so glad you pointed out that this was a pure end-grain piece. It's your well thought through commentary, excellent filming and editing skills that bring everything you make alive. I so look forward to every video. Hope you enjoyed your holiday.
Thanks so much my friend. I vaguely remember the cauliflower steak, I'll look it up later to remind me further. I really appreciate the comments about the filming and editing, I am always trying to improve on every part of the production, editing takes a long time but worth it. My last video (out yesterday) has an extra camera added to film me and what I'm doing, I'm trying to get more used to looking at a camera while talking to help get over my stage fright lol 😊
I take it very personally (in a good way) that you’ve chosen a California redwood! (Although we’re permanently relocating closer to our grandkids this fall. Yay!) It’s so lovely, your platter. Well done! 🎉
That's a super piece Mike - very well done. Loved watching the process and it has given me a few ideas to try myself when I can pluck up the courage. Thanks for sharing the journey on this one.
I was surprised you didn’t use a glove the whole time! I’ve only turned 2 resin bowls and the shards coming off were razor sharp. Nice result in the end!
@@MikeHoltonreminded me of the time I was given a giant redwood seed as a gift. Had I been able to plant it people in the future may have given directions through my village in Suffolk by saying turn right at the tree 😊
Beautiful result. I agree about the possible increased penetration with the other resin, but what you have turned out quite impressive in it's own way.
Your creativity, unique ability to see what it will be, and skill always amazes me. I love this platter and the colors. I watch Sprague Woodturning out of Canada. He does a lot more resin and has talked frequently about how much resin can hurt when being turned off the piece. I'm glad you put on that glove! Love your videos, Mike!!
Great use of 'fractured' wood Mike. The grain & colour of the wood is great & I actually like the now stable 'shakes' in the finished platter. Your choice of colours for the resin worked very well too. All in all, a great result for a beautiful platter. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
Love everything about it (apart from the yellow that comes from the shellac!) Such a creative use of the wood, it's wonderful. Hope you're having a great holiday! 😊😎❤
Love the piece Mike, makes for an unusual pattern. Well done on another awesome video. Enjoy your time away and thank you for taking care of our weekly Mr H fix 🙃

Now I would love to see the same bowl in the serious version. :)
Haha thanks Judith 😀
Yes I would like to see it with any dark colours that blend with the wood
Grey, or dark brown
It's so pretty! It reminds me of a dogwood blossom with the four petals.
Yes!
Yes it does, thanks 😁

Hello Mike. This is a lovely platter. I really like the “muted” shine. I think it allows the wood itself to tell its own story - and shine through!
Thank you very much Angela 😃
Hey Mike, your artistic prowess really is shining on this gorgeous bowl!
Thanks so much Larry 😊
I love the resin color in this piece. It's absolutely beautiful!
Thanks so much 😀
An absolutley beautiful way to use a piece of wood that may have gone to waste. Looks amazing and another very enjoyable video.

When you said platter i thought you were going to cut it along the length and make it a long plate... This was a wonderful surprise!

Looks fantastic Mike don't think I would have been so brave to take it so thin 😮

Great way to save a log that probably would not be good for much. Very cool. Nice job Mike.
Thanks Tim 😀
Pretty red blue and maybe a hint of ... white. Gorgeous wood, and a really cool idea.
Thank you! Cheers! 😃

What a great way to save a piece of wood that otherwise was unusable. 💕
Thanks Mary, so pleased I was able to save it 😁
Very unusual grouping. Very nice end result. 👍

Love how the resin creates different islands of wood, really attractive.

Turned out beautifully. What a great idea! I never would have thought of that and probably would have spindle turned that piece.

Beautiful. Could make an awesome and versatile center piece.
Thanks Barbara, I agree 😊
So glad you put the wood center in. The finished piece looks so painterly. Really nice effect and great save on the wood!🎉
Thank you very much Penny 😊
Man, that really came out nice. That turquoisey-blue gives it the look of something that should be sitting in a gallery in Taos, New Mexico.
It does have that Mexican feel to it 😄
Beautiful platter, Mike! 🤩 Love the resin colors.

Fun piece again!
Thanks 👍
i learned something new today. I always thought sequoia was a harder wood. Beautiful save on the wood, i love the platter!
