    This was the greatest WC win ever. Defeating the team who was so dominant, defeated every other team in one sided contest, didn't let any team come near them, acted as a complete unit. To be able to defeat them in a one sided contest and that too in their home ground was something I believe none of us saw coming

    As an Australian, this is up there with ‘99 as my favorite WC memory. Don’t remember’87 as I was too young, ‘03 and ‘07 were great but there was a sense of inevitability about them given how dominant those teams were. ‘15 was great but Australia had home ground advantage. Don't underestimate Maxwell's contribution with the ball. He bowled an average of 8 overs per game, often in the powerplay, with an economy rate of 4.8 rpo,which along with Hazelwood, was Australia's most frugal. (Head also bowled his handy score of overs at that same rate.) The fact that Maxwell could be counted on as a true all-rounder meant that the Aussies could dispense with Stoinis and Green and play two "break-glass" sheet-anchors in Smith & Labuschagne. Hardik Pandya would have given India that selection flexibility.

    • @tosgem
      @tosgem 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I also think Maxwell puts huge pressure on the bowling side without even batting. They can never truly believe they are on top of the game just because they restrict Australia a bit or get 1 or 2 wickets. They can never have that feeling that they own the momentum, and this pressure has an effect before he even walks in. Previous batsmen can benefit from it

Great win by an undisputed team a nation that stands alone in ODI World Cup cricket. It will be 50 years before any other team might match the same level as Australia 6 world cups. How many world cups do others have at most ? 2 . Aus are 3 times further away than WI and India. India blew this one badly, and they blew it at home. That’s sad. I think India has overtaken South Africa to become the King of Chokers. 10 years of visiting the semis and finals but not a trophy to show. Indians lost the nerve. But what impressed me is Aussies connected with every Aussie analyst to come up with the winning strategy, and finally the mind game which the Aussies mastered. Pat promised to silence the crowd and he did, he redirected the Indian bull to the red cloth and like a skilled matador wore it down and killed it. India will never ever create a team this good again, it was it and it went out silently into the night.

    Marnus Labuschagne's innings will look like he dug himself a hole. But, of those who watched the entire Final, and knowing the context of his selection, the stakes, the pressure of the moment he came in to bat, his innings had as much importance as Head's 100. Had he not kept his cool, all of the earlier struggles and victories would've been for nothing.

  • @mikefriend1514
    @mikefriend1514 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    In his press conference Cummins stated that one reason for putting India in to bat was ‘if you make a mistake batting, it can be fatal.’ Ultimately Australia banked on the pressure of the final getting to the Indian batsmen - every wicket quietening the crowd and eventually paralysing India. Who’d have thought India would go for two periods of over 80 balls without hitting a boundary.

  • @Alpha-oo8
    @Alpha-oo8 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +52

    Well, I can’t entirely say I didn’t see this coming, but it was looking very unlikely.
    But Australia timed their run perfectly. They lost their first two matches to the two teams they would face in the playoff, then started building momentum from there. They were never dominant, but they did enough.
    If one thing went wrong for India it’s that for the majority of this tournament, they weren’t even challenged. Which is a testament to how good they are, but it meant they didn’t have experience (in this cup) of winning under pressure. Most matches, they thrashed the opposition. Australia didn’t really thrash anyone except the Netherlands, their best otherwise was “comfortable, but unconvincing”.
    It’s true, India were the better team. They, in terms of performance, deserved the trophy. But unfortunately, sport doesn’t work like that. New Zealand didn’t deserve to be crowned “losers” of the 2019 cup (I mean, they changed the rules after that match, you know something wasn’t right about that.) South Africa have historically been one of the best teams, and yet they’ve never even reached a final. Both England and Australia will argue which one of them deserved to win the most recent ashes (which is perhaps fitting why it was a draw)
    If Australia had never won a tournament before, this would have been described as a fairytale run. It somewhat is, how on earth did they win that from the way they started? The impressiveness of the win is somewhat diminished by the fact they had already won the trophy 5 times before.
    India will have other chances, they are the most powerful nation in world cricket. They will always be in the running for a trophy. If australias win proved anything, you need to do just enough to make the playoffs. Anything can happen from there

That's all they're playing for and they got it. So congrats on getting all the records. Even Pujara criticised Kohli for going for a century instead of finishing match as quickly as possible.
    The best part was the setup by the politicians of having the game at Narendra Modi stadium and PM Modi himself comes to hand the trophy except he has to hand it to the Australians. I mean the ego of naming stadium after yourself when you're the sitting PM. Usually things get named after you in memoriam. If they knew that slow wicket is their weakness, atleast plan better and organize the final on a fast wicket so you can hit some runs.

      I think this would be good. My thoughts watching were that India didn't bowl the same way, seemed so keen to get a wicket that they kept attacking the stumps with their seamers, I don't even remember a slower short ball cutter that had been very effective for cummins

    • @lifeandmore2344
      @lifeandmore2344 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes. There was not much spin in the first innings. If Rohit played the way how he had played against England, India would have posted a much more higher total. One more thing is the way how Australia dominated in the field. May have saved some 40-50 runs. Kholi and Rahul took the risk of taking the game too deep. Can't blame them because Ind had already lost 3 wickets in 10 overs. But, the wicket of Kholi actually changed the game. I know Head's catch was phenomenal, but Kholi's wicket actually snatched the game. If Kholi was not out till atleast the 45th over, Ind could have posted around 290-300, which would have put the real pressure on the Aussies when they were reeling at 47/3. This is the same thing that happened vice-versa in the opening match of Aus vs Ind, where Ind was in the seat which was occupied by the Aussies yesterday.

    For a batsman who was getting out in 40s as many times as Rohit Sharma did should've been a little cautious at that moment keeping the occasion in the mind. Once he got out its 50% game overthen another 30% was eaten up by Legend KL Rahul against a team like australia who have Warner, Head & Marsh & Maxwell, also sending Jadeja ahead of SKY is a very defensive move when the batsmen are struggling to scrore boundaries. A counter attack by SKY would've been their best chance with 20 overs to go.

    Aus(Group)- lost by 6 wicket
    Ind(Final)- Lost by 6 wickets
    India(Group)- won in the 41st over
    Aus(Final)- won in the 43rd over
    India(Group)- Lost 3 quick wickets for at the beginning of their innings only to have a 165 run stand

      That's not a coincidence, that's the pitch conditions at play. Batting was difficult in the first innings, how often have we seen reverse swing? Plus, it was gripping and incredibly slow. Whereas in the second innings, the only time favorable for India was the first 10 overs. The ball was moving initially, but as soon as it became a little old and more dew came, the ball stopped gripping, swinging, seaming, spinning. It became incredibly easy to bat on. I see a lot of people go after KL for what happened, but I just think the poor guy was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Difficult comditions, where both youngsters, Gill and Iyer, got out cheaply. If he holed out, the criticism would have been the same. If anything, that's a pattern in World Cup knockout losses for India: the more inexperienced players fail to turn up routinely. Last time, they were the less experienced versions of KL, Pandya, and Pant. This time, Iyer, Gill and SKY. Even if Iyer and Gill had made 20-30 odd runs at a brisk pace, our position would have been better. And as I had been harping on from the start, Siraj was always a liability. Until now his lack of skill had been shielded by poor oppositions and huge totals. But we saw how when push came to shove the captain could not trust him. Perhaps in that lineup if Bhuvi Kumar was bowling, there would have been much more control.

      They planned for things, 3 hard hitters at the top, then 2 accumulators, then a mad hitting maniac followed by a keeper who can play spin(unlike Carey who sweeps at sight of a spinner). Their lower middle order was better than every other side. In bowling, Starc was the aggressive one, while Hazlewood controlled the runs, then Maxwell controlled the runs and Cummins went for the wickets. Quite a pragmatic team but a winners mentality

It is hard to see if he still gets 500+ runs and Kohl backs it up with 700+ runs. It worked beautifully till this one tick strategy was called out by Aussies in the finals. Would it have helped if Rohit allowed himself the luxury of playing longer innings? The strategy worked because KL Rahul played more roles in this series that would have made Rahul Dravid proud.

      We Indian people on online platforms should be more patient and less hyper-nationalist. With due credit to Aussies, I personally believe that we should start putting less pressure to our cricket team because this is what makes them nerveous on crucial stages of game and be defeated. The sadness I had while watching India practically give up after 100 runs left you could see it in the body language. I'm leaving cricket forever, until BCCI changes, until India becomes a real fighting team, that will fight to the end just like magnificent Australia. That's the end of my rant. Err… your World Cup finals table is missing something ?? Adam Gilchrist ?? If 149 in a final doesn’t count then… oh dear
    This from Cricket Australia web page
    “The decider against Sri Lanka was reduced to 38 overs a side following morning rain in Barbados, before another blazing start by Gilchrist and Hayden saw the former post the highest individual score in a World Cup final - 149 from 104 balls. Sri Lanka retained hope of chasing the distant 202 while champion batters Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene were at the crease, but their dismissals followed by a further rain interruption put paid to the contest.”

    The thing that Australia did better than India was fielding. For that they deserve the highest of praises. The rest was all due to the pitch and the toss. I don't think Australia could have won that they batted first.

      But credit to Australia for reading the pitch better. Rohit would bowled first anyway, as he said in the toss
