Believe me he won't lose a moment of sleep over it. He has won the WTC and the ODI WC and retained the Ashes in England all in the same year. He won't be bothered by records. He is a genius as a captain and he will always be remembered as one of the greats of our game long after he is retired, even if he is not in the record books of most wickets etc.

The thing is, most Pacers do not play that long. And ones that get injured that early, even less so. Pat came back and came back stronger than ever. He's led Australia to win the Test Mace and the WC. And he will have taken more than 400 Test wickets by the end of his career at an average close to 22. He's gonna be a legend regardless of whether he took 700+ test wickets or not.

Total tests has to be factored in, Jimmy Anderson has played more tests than Cummins has had hot meals but only the English rate him above the all time greats.
Probably could have retired 5+ years ago. Been a long time since Anderson has dominated a series

@@Gramscifreedom i feel like hes been carried a bit. The way he sooked after that first ashes test last year was pretty poor. If you need a pitch that is seaming sideways to be effective then its time to move on. Broads a unit but at least he’ll bend his back for the team. I honestly cant believe anderson is still one of the top 4 quicks in england at this stage of his career
@@Gramscifreedom He's been pretty average outside of engLand (for the standards of an "all time great" throughout his career.
Take out some anomalys like Pakistan and the UAE where he has barely played on he's only really excelled in the West Indies away from home.
I wouldn't say he's been bad in places like Australia, India, South Africa etc but he hasn't been elite per say.
His longevity obviously is something to be admired, and is a skill of it's own that he's mastered... but is he really in the conversation for ALL TIME great? no, not really.
Sometimes stats do not matter. See Dhoni does not have most runs or hundreds. But we call him great because of character. Pat will be remembered for his character and it will transcend all statistics or numbers. He will not fade into history like some of the greats have.
Once his career ends, he gets to live with the fact that he's also a fantastic person, so his cricket career statistics will pale in comparison to his character as a human being.,
There is no need of all this. He has achieved what most of the captains coudnt in their life time and that too he has done it in a very short period of time. Just enjoy his talent and bask in his glow.

My only take I want to add is that this same argument could be used for many other players, possibly some not to cummins extent but still, and of course many other factors such as would he have become the player he is now had he played those matches or if his longevity could be affected etc. but with the numbers we do have, you have produced the best video you could have so, great work! interested to watch more.
and maybe the injuries helped create the player he is now...

I believe the only two things left for him to accomplish are Test series victories in England and India.
No, speculation is very good but only watching stats, then would make Kallis the greatest ever player in the history of cricket. But he is not recognised in that way, like the whole aura and his impact.
McGrath, Ponting, Warne literally, when I say their names it feels I am naming legends. They have had that kind of impact, it comes from the years of creating that impact.
Pat definitely is currently the best fast bowler on the planet, but let's suppose he adds 1 more WC as captain and 2-3 WTC and T20 WCs then this decade of 20s would be definitely of the kind of resemblance to that great aussie era of 1999-2007.
Australia have started that history repeat very well with 1 T20 WC 1 ODI WC and 1 WTC, we got 4 T20 WC and 1 ODI WC and 3 WTC left till 2030
As a fast bowler I definitely think he would lead Aussie pace attack till 35 or 37, but his body and fitness during this long term comes into play. If he manages to win any of the above mentioned accolades, even with 370-400 test wickets.
He could be rated as a GOAT.

Like all the other commenters, why focus on the future legacy of a player that is still playing in the present?
That being said, I feel the general public's perception of a "legendary player" depends on whether they have outlier stats (total test wickets like McGrath) or obviously exceptional at one skill (accuracy with McGrath, speed with Thomson and lillee).
Cummins probably won't get up to that 500+ wickets mark that he deserves, but interestingly his skillset is so expansive, I do wonder whether that gives the impression that he's an average allround bowler rather than a perfect player. Imagine a universe if the tennis fans perception was skewed so that people would say "Federer is good at everything, surely that is average. But give me Andy roddick. Peak serving".
An accurate bowler with subtle variation who prefers to bowl first change, but isn't precious enough to decline bowling short as a third spell, or bowling off spin/off cutters against India in India in a world cup final. Cummins is OP
I enjoyed this interesting and informative video. But I do want to say that I don't think total number of wickets is the best metric to determine who is the greatest bowler. There are just so many reasons why a bowler might have less wickets than he otherwise might have had, and using this metric is a bit like comparing apples with oranges, especially if the players being compared are from different eras, or even different countries. Does anyone actually think that Muralitharan was a better bowler than Warne? Although imperfect, I think the traditional bowling average (especially over a long career) is still the best method to compare bowlers (within similar eras).
…and his lower order batting. Would like the cross tab of lower order batters (below wicket keeper) who have won or saved matches facing 50 balls or more. Cummins has done it 11 times in the past 2 years.

I think Cummins is good but he is not even close to being the best bowler in the world.
I think he is fighting for the title of Australia's best player since Bradman with Smith and Warne only.
Its hard to compare batsmen and bowlers so if we just compare him to warne, his numbers (in terms of strike rates and averages) stack up. Cummins is also captain of the side, however Warne had this aura and created the theatre that is unmatched.

I guess I missed out on Lillee but as the vid states Cummins could get close to McGrath in wickets, plus he is the captain. I didn't ever see Lillee or AB play, ik they are both legends.
You could also make a valid argument for Ponting as or perhaps Gilchrist as well I think, Gilchrist would have to be the fist choice wicket keeper for test matches worldwide in any era.
Fair to say in Australia for a while we were so spoilt with batters that our top 5 or 6 all averaged close enough to 50
But I do stand by what I said about warne being the greatest showman in cricket I have ever seen and it's not even close

Bradman is the best sportsperson in history full stop. No other sportsperson is so far and above the next best in their field as Bradman is to the next best Batter. So to suggest that Cummins is somehow better than Bradman is ridiculous. Cummins could go down as Australia's greatest ever Pace bowler sure, he may even go down as Australia's greatest ever Captain depending on how he and the team performs for the rest of his captaincy (although I'd argue Ponting and Waugh are still better atm).

You could make an argument that Michael Phelps (Olympic swimmer) is the best sports person of all time given the amount of gold medals he has won in the Olympics.

Lillie missed a lot of time due to injury and the World Series Cricket dispute. Not to mention they played less tests.
For the 13 years he was active playing 11 tests per year at an average of 5.07 (which is the key here when put next to this 4.44 is looking a bit measly) wickets per game that would have him at 669 wickets.
Based on a higher wickets per test ratio the calculation towards the end of this video means Cummins must have played more tests again in this scenario.
Don’t get me wrong Cummins is great(so is Hazelwood) and yes his impact is increased by being captain.
But a quick scan of the teams Lillie played in and he (apart from the odd Cheppel once in a while) was nearly always the main man.

No way would he have lasted that long. I was thinking about this the other day (about starc who has been injury prone in the past too) but both of them would not have lasted as long if they didn't break down as often as they both have done in the past. If anything the injuries have lengthened the careers further as if they hypothetically did not get injured with alot of minor things, with the strain of pace bowling they both would have had a more serious injury that would have potentially forced them to retire early.

No he wasn't. He was injured for years. We knew when he debited against South Africa aged 18 that we had something special.
I don't think stats tell the story we should be looking for. Take Imran Khan for example his total wicket tally is 362 from 88 test matches. His impact is impossible to describe in words. On the other hand, while just as great Jaques Kallis had better overall stats. But I would in a heartbeat would rate Imran over Jaques. Similarly, if we compare Pat with Jimmy anderson or Stuart Broad, the stats or the projected stats won't tell the story of how much impact this man has had on international cricket. Other than that more important than all his wicket tally is when he gets those wickets. You could have mitchell starc take a 5-fer, but what really would have mattered were the 2 wickets cummins took when a team was on 200-1 on the second day of the test match.
