Compare Sachin’s ODI record between 94-03 to every other ODI cricketer from those years and your jaw will drop at how far ahead he was of everyone else.
I think Kholi trumps that though with regards to ODI's. Sachin had a great record in that peak, but there were a bunch of guys who played massive amounts of games not far off. Kholi averages nearly 60 over his whole career, and if you only look at guys with some significant games behind them, he's almost in a different planet compared to them. In an career where he's almost averaging 10 more than the others, it's pretty extraordinary. And then you go to T20I's.... yeah, he's proper good. For the record, I'm still picking Sachin. But Kholi has one hell of an impressive resume, especially when he was captain.
@@bartonez123 that's because it's a batsmans game now. Rules have changed so much. Look at the tests even though Sachin was more of an aggressive player.
Babar averages nearly 57 , devilliers around 54 , Dhoni about 51, hope 50 , Bevan about 54. All of them have played at least 100 ODIs and apart from Bevan , rest all have played in Kohli’s era. This clearly shows the difference between the eras. Every tom dick and harry averages around 50 these days
Every tom Dick and Hardy averaged 50 in Sachin's era in Tests... Why? Test had flat highway pitches made for draw in Sachin's era... No one talks about that. If you can even compare a batsman with 44 average in ODI(Sachin) to 57 average in ODI(Kohli) Then Kohli(49) is better than Sachin(53) in Tests... Tests have become so much bowling friendly...
Bevan played in Sachins era and scores 54 average... So there were players scoring above Sachin in ODI... Sachin was number 1 ranked for 368 days... Kohli was number 1 ranked for 1786 days...
Sachin scored 15k at 53 and kohli is averaging 48 and yet to get 10k. His average will go down to 46-47 by the time he retires. Even comparing them is ridiculous
Mind you Sachin played in an era where home Indian pitches were flat as highways. 2000s was the easiest batting era for tests.. Kohli plays in an era where home India pitches is rank turners.. Ball turns square from day 1. But in Sachin's era even 5th day was a batting pitch in India.. So a 49 average of Virat is as good as 55 in Sachin's era.

I think a lot of people have forgotten that Sachin was a very attacking player right uptill 2003-4 , both in Tests and ODI's and even in his late 30's he use to play attacking shots. I think one of the things which favour Virat is that he is still playing and his best innings are more fresher in people's mind.
Sachin scores faster at a higher average than Virat. Virat is yet to reach the end of his career when stats come down. Wait 10 years after Virat finished.
I really don't think Virat in tests is even top 3 indian batters. It goes Tendulkar, Dravid and Gavaskar. look at the batting averages just for comparison because test as a whole hasn't changed nearly as much as ODIs (powerplay, field restrictions, two new balls) but in tests the only difference might be of pitches and balls (which haven't changed much either)
Tests has gone a massive change since 2018. Tests have become so much result oriented that allmost all tests are producing results. How? By making rank turners in India and extreme swing pitches in England... Sachin Dravid played Tests when batting was easiest in Tests(2000s). Tests had a 60% chance of a draw in that era... Scores of even 900+ was made with just 2 inningses batted in entire 5 day was possible in that era... Tests started producing rank turners and it startes affecting batting averages... Agree include mohammed asif in that list too. Moreover, Sachin faced these poten bowling attacks in around the same period virat didn't face prime amir pre ban and mohakmed asif who at that time best test batsman like Kevin pieterson, AB devilliers, ponting, Clarke and amla rated as unplayable he faced a pakistani attack that had injury prone umar gul, wahab Riaz, a England attack with only broad and Anderson only good in home conditions Sri Lanka only had malinga South Africa had steyn aussies did have potent Johnson, and then starc but these attacks were never comparable with wasim, waqar, shoaib, saqlain. Mcgrath, Lee, warne. Vans, murli Shane bond. Ambrose and Co Sachin had to battle these bowling units in adversarial difficult conditions when reverse swing still was a phenomenon. Now there is no reverse swing with 2 new balls, bigger bats, smaller boundaries and generally conditions favouring batsman. I remember wisden cricket showed empirical data that had DRS been around wasim akram time he would of had 300 more wickets of plumb LBW. Fast competent skilled bowling was a thing of the 90's. Having said that maybe if kohli would be around that period due to his mindset he would easily excelled too.

"Who would you rather watch" is a rather incomplete question. The bats have changed significantly. With the new bats - you would not bother with Kohli. Sachin Tendulkar's cover drive with the old bat could break hands. He followed Gavaskar who batted with his left hand. No point in comparing numbers - See the desert storm innings (2) and Kohli has never done that to the best team of all time.
If longevity is a big deal (which it is), why isn't tendulkar above bradman? Sachin dominated against 3 generations of best bowlers in thsir prime and came out on top every time barring his last away tours in 2012. Call it bias, but with technology and home ground advantage starting to peak from the 90s, sachin should be considered the better batter than Bradman.
@@shubhangkulkarni364 WWII, boat travel and two life threatening illnesses would do that to a man Edit: The first class scene back then was basically test quality anyway; Bradman's first class record is also very awesome
In test cricket, there is no comparison. Sachin is leaps ahead of the next. You see his away record, his record in SENA, record vs oppositions, he is basically peerless. In ODI cricket, they are basically equal. Kohli has better stats but he has played in a much easier ODI era where rules and conditions have favored the batsman. So the only fair yardstick to compare ODI cricketers across eras is to see how far ahead they were from the best of their peers. By that yardstick, both are roughly equal. Sachin was leaps and bounds ahead of you look at consistency and SR from his peers like Ponting and Lara. Similarly with Kohli. So overall, if we are saying who is the best batsman across ODI’s and Tests, then it has to be Sachin. Obviously no data to compare T20I’s, although Sachin had a few excellent seasons of IPL at the very end of his career, so he probably could have been a great T20I player as well.

Also, as for Tendulkar’s longevity, it was facilitated by the fact that the BCCI possibly has the best player/board relations in the world. Brian Lara and every star player after him eventually went to war with the WICB over their mismanagement of the team and the game in the region. And it has been argued that the board played a big part in his eventual retirement. It certainly wasn’t a natural retirement because his antepenultimate innings was a double hundred in Pakistan, where he became one of the then few men to score a hundred in one session
Not close. Tendulkar all the way. Closer if you said Dravid and Tendulkar. But Lara in such a poor team was so good. If Lara had Dravid, Ganguly, Shewag and Laxman with him, he may have been even better. But great discussion as ever. This is punditry and cricket talk. Sachin's Odi feats are so disrespected. He revolutionised 50 over cricket. He has a higher batting average and strike rate in ODIs than Lara, Ponting, Kallis, Clarke, Sangakkara, Hayden, Inzamam, Hibbs, Anwar - despite playing ODIs for 23 years! There are only two cricketers who can be compared to Sachin Tendulkar. Bradman and Viv Richards. If you are planning to compare anyone else - you don't know the sport at all.
In White ball cricket VK has much more impact on the out come of a match than ST had in his era. Yes rules & conditions changed big time in favour of VK. In red ball cricket Kohli is no where even close to ST. It is only white ball where VK is better than ST. VK’s fitness is far better than what ST’s. was but Sachin could ball as well & has very good bowling record as well. So over all ST’s was far better batsmen than what VK is but VK has better white ball record than what ST has.
@@harshvardhanagrawal2225 or maybe they’re just not skilled enough to play in more difficult conditions due to the advent of t20. I’ve seen kohli struggle against bang average spinners and teams fall apart because of a bit of swing
Completely agree. Bats are bigger now, pitches have become much more batter friendly, rules have become more batter friendly, fitness standards have improved. Sachin even without all this in my opinion was better than Kohli
I would rather watch Sachin leave 100 balls outside the off-stump than see any other batter hit sixes-he was such a sight to behold. His technique was flawless, and a work of art- the straight bat with the red MRF imprint, so iconic. In the world of ODIs during Sachin’s era, Desmond Haynes held the record for the most centuries with 17. Then Sachin surpassed that and hit an astounding 49 centuries-nearly tripling that earlier record. Now, with these watered-down ODI rules, featuring two new balls, shortened boundaries where mishits sail for six, and flat pitches that pose little challenge (today’s 320 is like the 250 of the '90s), the entire dynamic of the game has been turned on its head.
I would argue that Sachin is the one exception to the rule when you talk about how today's players have more scrutiny compared to players from previous generations. That is true for most cases, other than Sachin. Non Indians probably don't have a full understanding of this but Sachin's standing was beyond that of a cricketer and a sportsman. He was the face of economic liberalization of India in the 90's. His face was on billboards everywhere and everyone in the country knew who he was. He was arguably the most powerful Indian at that time and one of the most single unifying figures of the time. So Sachin had ridiculous amount of media pressure, even though there was no social media. He kind of blew open the doors for the likes of Dhoni and Kohli to becomes such advertising giants.
Most of the world outside India didn't really get to follow Tendulkar in the 90s. He made my jaw drop. Comparisons with Kohli are laughable. He was averaging 59 in 2002, career runs 7800, then tennis elbow struck and he had to change his batting.
Kohli.. Period! - Kohli's mental toughness, self belief, killer instinct is unmatched. - Kohli has been great as a captain too, Sachin was a great batsman. - Kohli's record while chasing is unmatched - (he thrives on adversity) - Kohli is more charismatic (subjective) - 50+ average on all 3 formats, (which is insane) - defeated Australia in australia - peak Kohli was an absolute beast - Kohli has a spine. Sachin didn't. Yes, the only areas Sachin beats him are: - longevity - test cricket
Sachin in his pomp was amazing, pure entertainment, delight to watch, technically sound, beautiful straight lines. From 1996-2003, only Lara was comparable from entertainment purposes. Kohli has a lovely cover drive, and flicks nicely of his pads. However he is more of a accumulater, king of the singles/doubles, nudging and nurdling his way to runs. Kohli is a bit boring, like Joe root and kane williamson.
Sachin was soooooooooo beautiful to watch. Sachin actually gave me the joy of cricket. I used to support india just for Sachin and Ganguly(bcz he was from Kalkata). After Sachin the closest person who made me love watching batting was prime Babar. But Sachin was❤❤❤❤. I'm from Bangladesh btw
There is space in any all time XI side for both of them. There will be more than one batsman on that XI after all. If I had to choose though it would be Sachin.
What you mean by shorter format? How many T20s did Tendulkar played for India? "1"?. Tendulkar was far aggressive batter than Kohli ever be period. Playing for MI and donning Indian Jersey is whole different ball game. When T20 started Tendulkar was what 36 or 37? If you're talking about ODIs Virat had 2023 as Sachin's 2003. But, he yet to win a world cup as a main batsman. Grinding and scoring runs in winning the Trophy( coz that's what all counts). With two new balls it's easy to score runs in ODIs and India have a better bowling attack. Now, we hardly see any good finger spin bowlers in ODI. No great leg spinner in the ranks. A great opposition makes a great player. Simply, compare the bowling greats in every team at that time. Walsh and Ambrose, Donald and Pullock, Wasim, Waqar and Shoib. Mcgrath, Lee, Gilesspie, Fleming. Warne, Muralitharan, Herath, Saqlain, Flintoff to name a few.

hatsoff to the show for bringing the topic of kohli busy schedule. people underestimating the mental fitness of kohli here. he has played 100 tests 300 ODIs 350 T20s in the span of just 15 years.. and talking about kohli stats in test cricket. he has probably faced tough test teams compared to 90s. back then england newzealand SA were not that dominant even at their home. now every team is dominant at home. kohli has few test centuries but most of the centuries came in SENA countries. sachin is all time great but kohli is the face of modern cricket. tell me one player who has great longevity after 2010 without an injury, when 3 of fab 4 is disappeared in t20 cricket, kohli still stood tall for India and scored important 76 runs for his country in the big Final. im out of words tbh.
For someone who made cricket famous in India and his dismissal would turn off tvs. And now for Virat to replace him and become the face of country is like a whole new level of greatness. No one India would have thought Kohli would go past sachin when Sachin just passed on the torch. Kohli for ages 🔥
This is a no brainer question for someone who has watched cricket since 95-96. The real question is Lara v Tendulkar and the answer is Lara by just a whisker.
Sachin's variety of shots was impressive. At the start of innings he would have different strokeplay, and mid innings or towards the end he would suddenly play unexpected shots to compensate for field spread. His knowledge of the field, the bowlers was astonishing. He could very well play all the shots Virat could, but the same cannot be said about Virat. Virat is more of the run collector who believes in running more. Sachin was a master in finding gaps at any stage of the innings and would still deal in fours and sixes. That is what made Sachin's batting interesting to watch. But I agree Virat has been a master at run-chasing and his run chasing is a treat to watch. But from pure batting perspective, Virat has limited variety of shots. I have rarely seen Virat playing slog sweep, reverse sweep(for a six which Sachin did), the flick shot or a good solid square cut. Virat has clear weakness on the off side as well. Sachin was way more instinctive than Virat, whereas Virat avoids risks.
Anyone who has seen 90s Tendulkar bat would never make any case for anyone else. These guys remember only the post 2002 Tendulkar thats when the TV coverage became global from India.

All these legends were more than just about the game. They changed something about the sport. They took it forward to a next level and showed the world how sports can change life. Sachin belongs to such a level. He was born to push cricket as a sport. Another Virat might come, there might be other Virats in the history. There is only ONE Sachin.

The attack Sachin faced was far more deadlier than what Virat faced both in fast n spin. The pitches were a lot nicer to bowlers. No DRS back then (Sachin would ve had 20 more centuries). Size of grounds. The pressure that Sachin had all through his career can be known only to people of India coz they switched off tv the moment he was out till Sehwag came (a decade of lone warrior 90's). It only emphasizes the fact that the whole batting lineup was completely dependent on Sachin. Kohli is much more privileged that he gets to play in his groove because of a much better batting lineup.
It was a shame that Sachin suffered Tennis elbow, he lost a significant part of his peak, moreover he had to change his gameplay so as to sustain his career.

Now, with these watered-down ODI rules, featuring two new balls, shortened boundaries where mishits sail for six, and flat pitches that pose little challenge (today’s 320 is like the 250 of the '90s), the entire dynamic of the game has been turned on its head.

Chutiya logic agar hardik saath nahi deta toh Virat akele nahi jita pata Virat ko saath Mila h bahut baar toh woh jita paya h kuch innings single handedly jitaye h toh aise 175 Sachin ka add hota agar us din koi last mein 3 runs maar deta usse badi innings chase mein nahi thi india ki taraf se except Maxwell
If you have watched Sachin in the late 90s and you still pick Virat then you are blind or biased.
hatsoff to the show for bringing the topic of kohli busy schedule. people underestimating the mental fitness of kohli here. he has played 100 tests 300 ODIs 350 T20s in the span of just 15 years.. and talking about kohli stats in test cricket. he has probably faced tough test teams compared to 90s. back then england newzealand SA were not that dominant even at their home. now every team is dominant at home. kohli has few test centuries but most of the centuries came in SENA countries. sachin is all time great but kohli is the face of modern cricket. tell me one player who has great longevity after 2010 without an injury, when 3 of fab 4 is disappeared in t20 cricket, kohli still stood tall for India and scored important 76 runs for his country in the big Final. im out of words tbh.
Kohli 2016 ❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥
