@@decino I grew up with an SB16 audio card, which used OPL synth for MIDI. Many instruments' sound was... esoteric. Thank to this, despite whatever instrument it was intended to be, in my head the canonical lead in _Waiting for Romero to Play_ is a pipe organ.
I quite simply could not contain my laughter when watching you enter the main courtyard in MAP18. what an incredible creation; the mapper and MIDI author deserve Cacowards.
The most cursed part of map 18 wasn't the midi, the scale, or half the map being missing. The most cursed part was all the bonuses being properly aligned
I'm grinning from ear to ear after seeing you enjoyed my midi enough to turn it up! (I did the 'Message for the Archvile' cover) Proud to say it was completely from memory (didn't even do a one listen refresher, which the rules did allow), so the wacky instrument choices are because of that. I knew at the time I was forgetting part of the guitar solo but I just couldn't remember how it went. No idea why I used square lead tho... I think it was because I remembered it as being one of the louder instruments? Also, less proud to say that the title screen music is my cover as well. That one is... not so good.
Man, the courtyard. I dont know why, but I laugh since the moment you open the first door... Then I couldnt stop, the midi, the layout, your reaction. Man, XD.
That Message for The Archvile hurts me. It sounds like whoever did the midi remembered how the song goes exactly, but intentionally changed up the notes to torment me in specific
17:50 It would have been hilarious if instead of the Arch-Vile here, a Cacodemon was there instead. It would've possibly meant that the designer was remembering the PS1 version of this map.
36:45 That jump to the blue key in "The Labyrinth" really was so epic! 😲Map 18 was the highlight for me. Loved the music throughout as well. 😊🎶 Really added to the cursed nature of these maps. Well played decino. 🙂💛
Decino saying "window dressing" makes me imagine him walking out of his store, seeing dressing smeared all over his windows xD "oh no, window dressing times 2"
@@TheGuyWhoIsSitting Yes and no. Map18 is super cursed but still recognizable. Map15 was beyond that - it was just a random map thrown in rather than cursed version of the original.
I had to recreate Message for the Archvile for the TNT project (I think mine is a bit more faithful than the one in MAP20 here, but I like the author's take on it) and let me tell you, that song is way too long to make from memory. When I taught ear training and dictation, I had to play little eight bar snippets of harmonic progressions for students four times so they could try to write them, and here, you only get a few listens for a five minute song.
"Oh, it's too wide, you ruined my fun! :(" That cracked me up more than I expected it to! Also I can't decide if the maps or the MIDIs are more cursed.
Dude i have waiting like a week for this! So good to see there are 10 maps still left, is glnna be bittersweet when it ends, i am enjoying this series a lot it feels like sitting next to a friend while he is playing, like in the good old days.
It's always a joy to see your Doom content Decino! I don't know if you were asked this before, but do you always pistol start? Even when not recording? Or do you do continuous playthroughs also?
The only time decino may not pistol-start a wad will be when a mapper _deliberately_ doesn't place weapons after the first one you find in continuous play.
Map 17. Decino: Why is the cacodemon here? Caco: I don't know, I just went away from Heck to buy some bread and get lost. Can you just shoot me to instantly send me back home? It's so uncomfortable and scary in that tunnel. Decino: Ugh, well, yeah, of course. Courtyard is really small. Citadel... Well, unlike most of D2 levels I seem to like it. Maybe because of this D1-ish look. But last time I played it was long time ago. Maps of Chaos doesn't count, right? Oh, wait, I remember. Last time I played it just before discovering your channel. It was under GZDoom, so I skipped some parts by using jump feature. CatChum is more compact than I remember. I Like it that way. Thanks, have a nice evening too. P.S. I wonder, how these maps would be looking if they were made with Spanish theme in mind.
I'm stuck in bed because of a back injury so I have a lot of time on my hands. I've gotten back in to Doom and tried my hand at speed running it. In the meantime I found your vids and have watched quite a few of your playthroughs. I don't speedrun anymore but I do still watch your vids. Thank you. Best time was about 32/33 mins.
3:40 He didnt try to punch you because you caused his pain state, which thanks to you, i know that it causes the revenant to not punch, but fire a missile at you. Thanks Decino!
36:20 shooting the walls behind the imps is supposed to raise that platform by the door (but it was already raised here). Overall though that was a really impressive recreation of map 19.
I tried, ok? :( I did the whole thing litteraly only using memory, didn't look at the originals (s because I also did the music) at all... That's why it's so cursed xD also thanks for the thumbnail! :)
For some reason I always thought, your favourite Doom2 MIDI was from map 9 The Pit. Maybe I imagine things :D Thanks for video, a little breather after a tough week :D
Haha, Courtyard really is twisted in the best way and it's definitely up my alley since I do like the cramped style. :) ``turns up to 12`` - _Spinal Tap band lineup would like to know your location_ ;) Also, epic jump on the Shitadel - well done, and being scammed on the glide, so anticlimactic lol
What I'm suprised not to have seen more of in this series is mapmakers putting rooms from one level into another level instead. I'm sure I'd do that if I tried to recreate a specific old Doom level.
28:53 That little whistle part of the bizarro citadel... Toot-toot-toot Tooot! ...so silly. Eliminates any tension in the map. I cracked up every time i heard it.
lol I like how "Waiting for Romero to Play" turned into a '90s ambient electronic track in the composer's memory. Totally different feeling from the melancholy creepiness of the original.
I honestly like Citadel for its non-linear nature while still being a bit compact so if you know it a bit you dont spend 20 minutes on it. But I can see why people don't like it. Also Huzzah, been looking forward to this episode for a while. Lets end it!
I saw the custom name for Map 20 on the video bar, and given the naming scheme, I was very scared it was going to be missing the "h" had it been placed there as a censor. Thank God I was wrong.
Seems like the creator of map 17 got confused between Tenements and The Abandoned Mines. That elevator in the Caco chasm isn't there at all in the original, but I think Abandoned Mines has something like it. They are pretty similar levels at the start though. Also, that Courtyard was the second most cursed map so far, after Industrial Zone. It's close, but that Industrial Zone remake wasn't just cursed, it was fucking haunted.
The citadel as much as cursed was in the original or in this .wad is still for me one of the best maps, can't change my mind decino. Because I've explored all of it and remember that was really nice looking. And, because it made me feel like a FRICKING IDIOT when I realized I could finish it with only 2 keys, which took me a week to find out when i was like 6yo.
Ah ! You thought I was typing "You missed the supercharge and the partial invisibility" ! But I was - in fact - typing "You're welcome" to your expected thanks ! I'm 4 parallel universes ahead of you !
There is no Easter Bunny, there is no tooth Fairy, and there is no _'Waiting For Romero To Play' orchestral harp._
And I was completely wrong too. The lead melody isn't even a harp . Pretty sure it's a nylon guitar instead.

The most cursed part of map 18 wasn't the midi, the scale, or half the map being missing. The most cursed part was all the bonuses being properly aligned
Map 18 was so full of question-toned sentences, it was a complete delight to see, if only to see Decino absolutely flabbergasted.
41:06 “It’s too wide, you ruined my fun!” 😂😆🤣 I’m dying

"Flame Martian Telegram" sounds amazing and you should be VERY proud of it.
The title screen is glorious my friend :-)
Imo the only difference with the title screen music is just that yours is a bit sadder. Not necessarily a bad change, just a nice thing :)
Man, the courtyard. I dont know why, but I laugh since the moment you open the first door... Then I couldnt stop, the midi, the layout, your reaction. Man, XD.
Decino not finding a super shotgun: sometimes you walk out the door and you just have to say you are fine, but you know that you are not really fine.

For some reason, the MAP18 music reminds me more of Simcity 2000 than Doom.
It reminded me of Heretic above everything.
You can't cut back on UAC funding! You will regret this!
Yo I was thinking the same thing, those strings in particular are so SC2000.
0:37 Archive getting doorstuck. What a fricking noob!
23:11 The flying Arachnotron among decino's disbelief of the cursed map is the cherry on top LOL
So many times the mappers make small rooms bigger but when there's supposed to be a massive open area, they make it cramped!
Those whistle sounds in citadel are just so cursed
Oh dear lord, I'm very much looking forward to the next part! Also, that midi on map 20 is amazingly stanky, love it
