MAP32 author here. This one was another last-minute fill-in, but I think I did okay for not having played TNT in several years. Unfortunate that idclip was required for secrets, but I also recall the original being that way. I think I wood-ified the vine texture because I remembered the map as being "too wooden" overall and just went hard on WOODMET and WOOD5. This project has been interesting to play and map for. I think most maps have gotten a little harder due to the mappers improving their skills since the first time they played TNT. I also added some visual details that I knew weren't there in the original because I feared nothing more than creating "TNT but extra ugly". My main problem (which you'll also see in MAP23) was my tendency to remember areas as much more vast than they really were, most notably the "sewer 'maze'".
So about the MAP31 MIDI (my only contribution to this particular video's content, I believe): I taught myself how to play Legion of the Lost on the piano well years and years ago, so when trying to "memorize" it, I just counted phrases until each entrance. Most of them I already remembered from having listened to the song for years, so I just approximated the tubular bells as best I could, and at one point the strings just double the piano, so that was easy. I had a bit of a head start on that one (like I did with the MAP01 music, which I'd also more or less memorized years ago). All my entries in this project were more or less of things I had strong memories of one way or another. MAP05 and MAP10 I had fond memories of (and MAP15 was a map I liked in DM but disliked very strongly in single player). The MIDI tracks I did were all pretty easy for me either because I already knew them or they were simple to memorize with a few careful listens using my musical ear training background.

Map31 was a bit off but in the best way possible. I think it's even better than the original. Sure, the map author took some liberties but, the layout makes more sense and the combat feels great. Even with that random mastermind. Midi on point. Good job.
Maybe I'm also remembering it wrong but it seems to me like memories of TNT: Revilution MAP31 leaked into the mapper's memory of the original TNT Map 31. I get a Reviilution vibe from this map.
*Pharoah* is probably my favorite map of TNT. I just like the Egyptian theme and the level design. 5:30 I always suspected that the yellow key was supposed to be in the tomb (hence the crusher), but there were mapping problems, hence the reason the key was just splatted right beside the now useless crusher. 10:50 so far, I think this version of the map is much better than the original. I like the extra enemies and the extra design elements (like the longer passage into the pyramid, and the 2 obelisks in the yellow key area), as well as the darker lighting effects.
Because i played these maps right before i watched your playthrough i can tell you that the barrel room was correct, and that there are two of them. The one you remember and the one you saw. 31:00 Yes that was in the original too. The end was much tighter in the original. Needed a few tries. Some areas are annoying when you can't look down. Like for the blue key in Pharao.
I never get bored of these cursed remakes, so fun to watch. I hope that decino would try episode 1 remake "the thing you cant defeat" Its even more cursed, but intentional and purely genius mapping.
The floor at 29:26 is inconsistent in the original TNT too ... there's just a warning on the walls saying "RADIOACTIVE" or something like that... but I'd preffer if the liquid on the floor were green to show it better for the player. So, in a way, this recreation is loyal to the original, but they missed the warning.
For such a weird remake of map31, it's very enjoyable what was changed. Also I did the EXACT same thing running right off the side without pushing the switch that lowers that elevator, needing to run around like 4 times.
People have been recreating the entire game from memory including the music, but imagine how cursed can a DOOM WAD get with sprites even recreated from memory?
As different as Map31 was, hot damn it was a nice improvement over the original. Darker lighting, bigger pyramid, more wall murals, etc. Whereas the Map32 end area felt a bit more like the version with MP enemies enabled, and meaner overall. I like these a lot.
There is a yellow key in MAP31? CURSED!!! There is some really cool extra detailing in it, though, which fits nicely. I like the fact they used the TNT-specific switch textures.
In MAP31, there was no yellow key in the room.... at first. I made a guess that it rises out of the ground on a pedestal for you to pickup as a fake-out.
you didn't comment much on the Into Sandy's City rendition, but aside from being quite simple there were a lot of subtly cursed things about this version. I think the entire part around 25:00 to 26:00 was a bit off, but there's also supposed to be a longer duration/tied note at the end of that main riff. but all the notes were the same lenght here.
You should have tested if it's still possible the jump in map 31, in case that the yellow key was missing. And yes, the vines of map 32 were necessary, they gave that map a Plutonia style.

For some reason, I used to vividly remember a spider mastermind roaming the streets of map 13 Downtown from Doom II. So if someone had asked me to re-create that level from memory in ~2014 I would have added it, and it wouldn't have been a meme or a troll.
How to make your Doom level feel like a Serious Sam level. 1) Wide open outdoor space 2) Boss monster literally next to the starting area with nearly all weapons nearby. 3) Egypt. Egypt? No not Egypt again.
I'd love to see Decino tackle The Thing You Can't Defeat after this. It's heavily inspired by this and... well, you need to go in blind. Wonderfully cursed. If you, dear reader, decide to play it, the first level is barely different, but you'll know you've loaded it correctly by the music and by the contents of the secrets.
i tend to use the two pronunciations of caribbean depending on the situation. like i'll say the "CARibbean sea" but if i'm talking the region it'll be "the caRIBean" lol

As far as I was ever concerned, the only right way to beat map 31 was to straferun onto the throne and stand in front of the switch's linedef and press space. If I were remaking this from memory you'd find a significantly abbreviated and much more frustrating version of Pharoah! Also, I've always pronounced 32's name "Caribbean" like the sea, but who knows, they might have meant been referring to the Caribbean islands 🤔🤔
I say "Ca-rib-e-un", except when talking about talking about Pirates of the Carebean, or TNT Map 32, in which case I pronounce it as "ca-ra-BE-in". ...man, what was up with Map 31? This isn't a Plutonia level. And most of the map is actually BIGGER than what it's supposed to be, which is weird.
I really like how we went from "Putting Cyberdemon in this level of DOOM 1 is bad and you should feel bad" to "Putting Spider Mama here is cursed and I love it".

Map 31 is alot curse there. I like it for what it's worth. Spidermaster Mind there? Yikes! As for Map 32, not the best I say, but I still like it. Now for Map 16 throughout the others that will be pretty bad so hoping curse will likely be on my and everyone's side so let's hope for the best. 🙂

MAP31’s Spider may have come from conflating this map with Speed of Doom’s MAP32, which also features pyramids.
Doom Raider looks like the type of map that would be fun to speedrun.

Well the difference is that the placement of the cyberdemon in E1M7 was just straight up evil and you had no weapons to deal with it.
