I much prefer the art-style of the 1999 version it's much more realistic and a little easier to take seriously. Not to mention, this art-style makes the impact of the attacks look much more painful.

The 2011 version is more faithful to the manga, since in the manga Kurapika doesn't seem to be affected by killing Uvo at all. When Uvo is finally dead, Kurapika lost a bit of his footing and thought "did I use too much power" and didn't seem to show any remorse. However, I would say I prefer the 1999 version because it humanizes Kurapika. The whole scene seems more symbolic, especially coupled with his teacher telling Kurapika to quit revenge as it would ultimately ruin him. This scene and Pakunoda's death were done superbly in the 99 version - very emotionally and ethically charged.
Wut Suthirachartkul Idk. The voice acting felt really emotionless here and the dialogue was a bit rushed. Maybe because it's old, but Kurapika's 2011 VA portrayed his emotions and anger a lot more expressively.

But if you read the manga, you know that the 2011 version is totally faithful to what happened in that fight. Kurapika really played with Uvog from start to finish. He went to check if his strength with ET and his Chains was enough, and he far surpassed it. In the manga, he wasn't worried for a second, not even after the broken arm. Uvog, he never had a chance.

I love how the old anime versions had enough initiative to do their own thing at critical points in a manga series. They realize well that there are things that the anime has to do better in order to convey the feel of the moment. The modern anime adaptation was good and all… but somehow most of the time I felt like it was mindlessly droning out, as if it was a gradeschooler halfheartedly reading the passage from a book just because his teacher told him to do so.

I've read the manga and seen both 2011 / 1999 versions of this fight and I must say that I prefer this one. Both aren't bad, but the 2011 one gives me the same impression as Naruto or Bleach, while the original gives me the same impression as FMA (original version too). It's shonen, but, "moderate" shonen. Kurapika's behaviour and reactions toward Uvo look more human and the whole scene has a "seinen" feeling. That's what I prefer in this version x)

same guy who directed rourouni kenshin he's really great at setting up atmosphere as you can see in the old 99 anime especially in the yorknew city arc it was great the minut details that give you the feeling that the spiders are really intimidating and the city dark and large.
I love this version for it's choreography. That little detail of uvogin throwing the can aat kurapica... once you seen it. The 2011 versión seems like a wasted opportunity. Same happened for the fight... I like the close quarter fight style in this one, Instead of the long range, kurapica almost flying away... But to be honest i enjoy both fights their styles are different, even tho i have always held 1999 battle choreography higher than 2011. Examples of this. Gon vs Hizoka / Silva Zeno vs Chrollo
i gotta say that i enjoyed this arc the most. as much as i lover hunter X hunter and their vastly different feels to every arch, the feeling of the mob mixed with thieves drenched in noir really just made this series for me. plus i like how their powers are all realistic in a way. or at least comprehensible. in over mangas, and later in this one, you have the main characters that can blow up mountains... who knows how much strength that takes.

Yeah this one was my favorite arc too, mostly since it focuses more on Kurapika, and he's been my favorite character since the beginning, and even more so when we see his weapon of choice after learning how to use nen, i love characters who fight using chains in any way so to see that i was happy would be an understatement.
I agree 100% and was actually thinking something similar to your last statement, it really is telling how in the beginning of HxH the abilities (even Nen ones) are so much grounded and don’t feel so much out of this world, meanwhile in later arcs, you have clown slot machines that talks back, Nen-interest chibi monster, giant nurse monster that heals , gigantic buddha statues even an elderly woman turning into a bike for others to ride 😝…and don’t even get me started on Nanika lol
I always got the impression that Kurapica took his morals very seriously. He didn't weep for the enemy as much he wept the tainting of his soul. Imagine. He's someone who believes lying is a reprehensible act.
There's nothing wrong with Ubo's voice. He's wild and flashy but most of all, he's intelligent. The VA of the older version fits him perfectly; calm, smooth with a strong/tough and intense voice when he wants to be. It's not really "nostalgia goggles" that put people off the newer version. If the newer version had done a better job, the majority of people would agree to it. This new version may be following the original manga but gives off more of a shounen feel which is lame.
I feel the same about the fight itself, I love the mood, tone and lighting effects, and the initial build up better to, and Kurapika's finnese with the chains. I also like the realistic inflections and motions the characters display which makes it more immersive, however uvo's torture scene on the other hand is arguable because both scenes are amazing atmospherically.
Aside from his personality, kurapica power or nen are special towards spider, it not only the spiders can only release 70% of its max power (desperation) but also enhances beyond 130% all nen type because of the limit break, the chain judgment to his heart. 100% for his scarlet eyes or gene added 30% more by limit break. Inorder to defeat kurapica, theyall attack on group
The artwork is beautiful. The love the reboot but this is so much fun. Two series of frames in particular stand out . When kurapika drops the chains before the fight, that swing is something you don’t get nowadays. Also, when kurapika gets cornered after Uvo goes “100%”, his eye aversion as he looks for an escape is soooo stylish.

The scene where Kurapica prays for his dead comrades and the great moment where he tells Ubo how unpleasant the sound of pain and the stench of blood are and that he can not understand how someone can´t feel anything when killing someone, are ALL NOT IN THE MANGA and therefore they will miss in the remake as well. THIS is what makes the old version not only better than the remake but also better than the manga!
just came here after stumbling upon the 2011 version in facebook because i instantly thought something's different from what i remember. this one was definitely waaay better in terms of everything. you can feel the tension and atmosphere being more serious in this style. i read some comments saying the newer one has better animation but look at the close combat scenes in this one, there were more movements here. plus the character designs were sharper. i mean look at kurapika with only one of his eyes revealing its bright red color. deym! looks way more badass compared to the 2011 version.
In 99 i could identify with kurapica! Ive felt his pain and his struggle! Cant explain exactly... the atmosphere and the dark tunes mixed with the ost gave me an overwhelming experience!! this OVA is my favourite and kurapica is my favourite Charakter

Yes this fight is very well animated but the 2012 fight is also well done. As many people will tell you. The effects, the art, the movement of the chain, the torture scene and when Uvo dies the sin city esque filter was great
I watched the 2011 version before this, and this is so much better. I don't question kurapikas gender, the chain is purple and black, voice is better, eyes are better, music is better, hair is better, the silent prayer is nice, it's just better.
Kurapika vs Ubogin Reminds me of sasuke vs danzo ... since both lost their family and are chasing after the ones responsible and this was their first kill ... and surprisingly their character turned dark after their first cold blooded kill until their friends helped them regain their humanity and get over revengeful thought even if a little... I like Kurapika's deign in the old version his hair and features are so handsome ! and I love him as a character how sweet he is and intelligent but he can become this cold and dark ...
Kurapika never lost his humanity. The reason he ignored His friends was because he didn't want them to get hurt and because he knew they would get in his way. Like Kurapika said his pain would never stop until he gets revenge even if he didn't put Gon and Killua over his revenge.

At 7:29 rather than forcing 'desperation' it should say forcing 'Zetsu' (the nen technique where aura output is blocked and retained inside the body). It's a pretty important point in order to understand why Kurapika won.

This is such a sad scene. The contrast between Kurapika and Ubogin, an exhilarating fight but eventually a tragic end. Felt really bad for Kurapika.

I always got the impression that Kurapica took his morals very seriously. He didn't weep for the enemy as much he wept the tainting of his soul. Imagine. He's someone who believes lying is a reprehensible act.
There's nothing wrong with Ubo's voice. He's wild and flashy but most of all, he's intelligent. The VA of the older version fits him perfectly; calm, smooth with a strong/tough and intense voice when he wants to be.
It's not really "nostalgia goggles" that put people off the newer version. If the newer version had done a better job, the majority of people would agree to it. This new version may be following the original manga but gives off more of a shounen feel which is lame.
no wonder it was so epic the first time i see it. it has the same animation as the rurouni kenshin OVA. damn! Kurapika looks so epic in this!

I feel the same about the fight itself, I love the mood, tone and lighting effects, and the initial build up better to, and Kurapika's finnese with the chains. I also like the realistic inflections and motions the characters display which makes it more immersive, however uvo's torture scene on the other hand is arguable because both scenes are amazing atmospherically.
One thing that I did notice was that they made uvogin look like a total noob against kurapika.
Aside from his personality, kurapica power or nen are special towards spider, it not only the spiders can only release 70% of its max power (desperation) but also enhances beyond 130% all nen type because of the limit break, the chain judgment to his heart. 100% for his scarlet eyes or gene added 30% more by limit break. Inorder to defeat kurapica, theyall attack on group
Also.. reinforcement or enhancer user personality are simple.minded people, contest of strength not contest of mind.

The artwork is beautiful. The love the reboot but this is so much fun. Two series of frames in particular stand out .
When kurapika drops the chains before the fight, that swing is something you don’t get nowadays.
Also, when kurapika gets cornered after Uvo goes “100%”, his eye aversion as he looks for an escape is soooo stylish.

The scene where Kurapica prays for his dead comrades and the great moment where he tells Ubo how unpleasant the sound of pain and the stench of blood are and that he can not understand how someone can´t feel anything when killing someone, are ALL NOT IN THE MANGA and therefore they will miss in the remake as well. THIS is what makes the old version not only better than the remake but also better than the manga!

I like the nen effects here than the later version. With that vibrating sound from nen looks and feels powerful.
just came here after stumbling upon the 2011 version in facebook because i instantly thought something's different from what i remember. this one was definitely waaay better in terms of everything. you can feel the tension and atmosphere being more serious in this style. i read some comments saying the newer one has better animation but look at the close combat scenes in this one, there were more movements here. plus the character designs were sharper. i mean look at kurapika with only one of his eyes revealing its bright red color. deym! looks way more badass compared to the 2011 version.
2011 version was made for slower kids so they can enjoy it too. Hence the narrator explaining everything for hours.
In 99 i could identify with kurapica! Ive felt his pain and his struggle! Cant explain exactly... the atmosphere and the dark tunes mixed with the ost gave me an overwhelming experience!! this OVA is my favourite and kurapica is my favourite Charakter

Now I know the reason I was addicted right away with this anime as it aired in the Philippines in 2002. It's darker than the 2011version. But of course the two are incomparable. I love them both.
Yes this fight is very well animated but the 2012 fight is also well done. As many people will tell you. The effects, the art, the movement of the chain, the torture scene and when Uvo dies the sin city esque filter was great

I watched the 2011 version before this, and this is so much better. I don't question kurapikas gender, the chain is purple and black, voice is better, eyes are better, music is better, hair is better, the silent prayer is nice, it's just better.

the way the video just ends with him holding his face in absolute horror and it cuts so abruptly is so chilling. we don't even hear him scream
1999 HxH is really special From everything it was perfect far beyond what they did with the new anime
Kurapika vs Ubogin Reminds me of sasuke vs danzo ... since both lost their family and are chasing after the ones responsible and this was their first kill ... and surprisingly their character turned dark after their first cold blooded kill until their friends helped them regain their humanity and get over revengeful thought even if a little...
I like Kurapika's deign in the old version his hair and features are so handsome ! and I love him as a character how sweet he is and intelligent but he can become this cold and dark ...
Kurapika never lost his humanity. The reason he ignored His friends was because he didn't want them to get hurt and because he knew they would get in his way.
Like Kurapika said his pain would never stop until he gets revenge even if he didn't put Gon and Killua over his revenge.

At 7:29 rather than forcing 'desperation' it should say forcing 'Zetsu' (the nen technique where aura output is blocked and retained inside the body). It's a pretty important point in order to understand why Kurapika won.
It’s crazy how both adaptations are faithful but feel ever so slightly different
やっぱりクラピカvsウボォーギン戦は1999年の方が出来がいいよな。
新ハンター×ハンター(2011)の方は全体的に明るくて動きも軽いから、この戦いでクラピカが醸し出す冷たい雰囲気とか場面の重圧感とかが全く感じられなかった。
まあそれはセル画がデジタルかの違いのような気もするけど、見てて緊迫感が伝わってくるのは断然旧ハンター×ハンターの方。

The 1999 version suits Hunter xhunter way better. Look at how dark it is. And this fight in particular is superior in every single aspect

i like the fact that hxh doesn't have any draggy episodes unlike other animes i know. i really miss hxh espescially the manga! its been like 8 years or somethin but somehow i never forget it. Definitely may favorite anime and manga!
