What makes Mark Knopfler even more amazing than the music that he plays is that his virtuoso guitar work is pure feel... the man makes 6 strings sound like that without a pick! He (and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham) are two guitarists who make musical magic plucking the strings by hand. Simply phenomenal.

Mark is a remarquable song writer but he likes playing on stage live.
What makes you groove is his knowledge and practice of many different styles of music he’s been taught by friends, playing in bars and listening to old blues.
He’s a master in rythm, and that why his solos are so perfect. The melody could not be expressed in a better way !

I was introduced to the Dire Straits by my sister when i was 14. I loved their music instantly. And now, being 43, this version, tjeeeee…music can’t get better than this. Technically and emotionally perfection🙂

This is by far the best live performance of this song. The whole Alchemy concert was great. Mark Knopfler is the best gitarist and a unique story teller in his songs. There are still a lot of little (or great) diamonds to discover, written and played bij him!
One of my favourite stories about Mark Knopfler is that, when "Weird" Al Yankovic asked for his blessing for Al to make a parody song of "Money for Nothing" (a song that ended up playing a big part in Al's underappreciated slapstick movie gem, "UHF"), Knopfler had only one condition; that he be the one to record the parody with Al.

I was 17, long hair (all gone now) second concert I ever went to (The first was the Rolling Stones) I went with a couple of guys from work.
Before it started we were saying that they can't play it as well live, got that one wrong!
This was amazing at the time and the audience were rocking and dancing all the way through the song. I'm not surprised that you can't sit still.

All the guys in the band played their hearts out at this concert , what an amazing set. Terry Williams on Drums was awesome , not biased even though he's from my home city 🙂. If you notice early on in the track , Mark and John turn and looked at Terry with big smiles , they knew he was smashing it . Wonderful reaction again 🙂

Great reaction. To play a clean guitar that fast without distortion or tapping is a skill that all guitarists aspire to, but many fall short of. Mark Knopfler is one of the true greats.

And not just the chops, but the musicianship he employs them in service of. I can't think of another guitarist who has ever played a piece that was both so technically brilliant and so undeniably gorgeous in the context of the melody it was being played around. Lots of guitarists can shred, although few at this level, but to do it in a way that not only doesn't overshadow the song itself, but actually elevates it, and to this degree? What can you even say?
@@michaelccozens Check out george Benson, absolutely clean and brilliant. I saw him in London do this kind of playing while doing the Chuck Berry hop across the stage, even the string section of the London Philarmonic that he brought along were stunned

Alan Clark on keyboards is fantastic. His keyboards on "Telegraph Road" from the same Alchemy performance is truly beautiful. Give if a listen. The whole song is gorgeous.

What an absolutely wonderful and genuinely heartfelt reaction to genius. I'm 63 and have loved this band from when they emerged in the late 70s. This performance is outstanding for the all round brilliant and astounding musianship of every member. You rightly give the heads up to the brilliant Welsh wizard that is Terry Williams on drums and what can one say about Mark Knopfler that hasn't already been said. I don’t think British music has anything to worry about as far as losing relevance is concerned, just considering how many good British bands were in the 70’s. Queen, Dire Straits, Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and half of Fleetwood Mac.
1st album was 1975. Punk and Dire Straits came out in same year. No contest. MK all the way.
Any song at Alchemy - this is where the guitar solos are. And the drummer!! AMAZING. Telegraph Road is my favorite. the keyboard is standout here. I enjoyed your reaction tremendously because it is was a very honest expression of surprise and sheer enjoyment of the musical talent! I never tire of replayment of any of the Dire Straits music. It's like I hear it fresh again every time.
I highly recommend Telegraph Road off of the same album.
I see TR as MK's best all-around song with an incredible solo. However, I prefer later versions from the 2010s.

I loved your reaction, the whole band are brilliant musicians, I agree about the drummer he's the best I've heard. I think for me this was the best live gig I've heard. My brother loved the band, he's sadly not with us anymore, I have his music collection. This band made allot of good music, and were very famous in Europe.
First of all I have never seen a more beautiful woman than you when you smile. And music: I don't know what it is about the English, but it seems that in every generation they produce a band or musicians who tower above all else. Check out Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Genesis or modern day Adele. Just unbelievable. And I find Dire Straits very underrated, the guys are all simply awsome. Whether studio album or live. And the "Alchemy" album in particular is the best live album ever for me. Love from Germany to the World.

Pure unbridled , live, no autotune, absolute, no doubt masterpiece. Enjoyed this awesome reaction to yet another real rock banger. These guys are right up there and carved solidly in stone with all the other greats. Zep. Floyd. Seger. Moody Blues. Elvis. Chuck Berry. Springsteen. Heart. The Eagles.

I remember where I was when I first heard Sultans of Swing, I was on a lunch break at college and it blew me away so much that I had goosebumps all down my arms. On my way home I went straight to the record store and bought it. Another Class reaction 🔥❤

Mark Knopfler was to the 1970s what Stevie Ray Vaughn was to the 1980s. Virtuoso guitarists with unique voices playing music anyone and everyone would be blown away by. Fortunately Mark is still with us all these decades later, and he can still light it up!
I think Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits is even more emotional, but this is the best live performance I've ever seen, by anyone.

I was in a small time band in the 90's. Our first gig we opened and closed with 12 min + versions, with improvisations of this song. We hadn't rehearsed many songs so that's how we filled the playlist. Besides, our lead guitarist loved it even more than the rest of us. The audience went wild !

This song is special. It's almost like three separate songs moving along in their own tempo within the same song.

Now you have to watch Telegraph Road, the Alchemy version. It’s a MASTERPIECE of the same kind. Then Tunnel of Love, Private Investigations, basically anything from this concert that yoou can find. As a fan who watched them arive in the late 70’s, I think the Alchemy Live recordings are the most outstanding performances by this already outstanding group of sensationally talented musicians. I’d really love to see your reactions to some of those songs.
The lead singer and guitar player, mark Knopfler, put out an album several years ago entitled "Sailing to Philadelphia." On the title track Mark is joined by the great James Taylor. Please consider this song for a future reaction.

1977 the sun was shining over a greek Island called Naxos. The Girls where pretty as hell..The beer almost for free and Dire Straits played "Sultans of Swing" The best time of my life.

I went to see Dire Straits over 40 years ago after they release their first album. I still talk about the concert friends today Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist, writer and all-round genius musician. No question he’s one-of-a-kind.
I don't know which is more entertaining and charming. It's either their performance, or your genuine and beautiful reaction, which I thoroughly appreciate. Thank you so much. I was 19 when this came out. I'm 63 now, but still feel 19.
