  • The problem with perfectionism. The perfectionist trap, and how perfectionism can stifle your creativity and lead to depression.
Do you see yourself as a perfectionist? Is that positive or negative? By its nature, perfectionism can be either, so it's up to YOU to decide which path you take. In this video, Chris talks about the difference between positive and negative perfectionism, and how each can effect you.

I also feel it's heavily influenced by social media like Instagram, where you always want your latest work to shine the brightest. Nowadays I see more and more artists re-posting old work, not because they are lazy (as I used to think) but sometimes it's nice to bring back something nice from your past and say 'hey, that thing I did last year was pretty cool'.

I'm in a similiar boat here.. I also didnt know if the work would actually bring in clients lol
It always seems that if I try to be original, I get the sense (from previous results) that It didnt get me any visits, likes or comments. let alone followers.. I only recieved decent results when I copied or heavily based my work of whats already populair..
Its almost seems that the same thing called "being creative" is not being vaildated at all.. polishing it with nice photography or typography doesnt do Diddly-dick. what a joke..

There's nothing wrong with aiming for perfection.
The key is to accept that nothing will ever be perfect - this gives you a more balanced mindset that allows you to continuously improve while accepting and learning from your failures but it pushes you past the 'good enough' mindset that plagues most people nowadays, while avoiding procrastination.
The idea that perfectionism is evil is a complete myth.

A good follow-up discussion for this would be to find out where the pursuit of excellence ends and where perfectionism begins. We're all in different states of proficiency in the things that we do and it's easy to make an assumption that what we're doing is good enough and anything more is just perfectionism.

Man I love this video! It's such a good message. For the longest time I found a formula of artwork that people liked and I enjoyed creating it but every year or two I like to really change up my style and try new things. The majority of my audience wouldn't respond to it and I would back away from it. It felt like I was pigeon holed into one style. There are artists who are happy to keep making the same style of artwork but if you're not and you feel forced into doing the same thing to "people please" it really sucks. It took me a long time to realize that my happiness and experimentation is more important than some unhappy followers.

Speaking as a person who struggles to get something down because I want the first draft to be the final product (or to put it another way, the perpetual note on my lifelong report card is 'struggles to start and complete projects'), this is a welcome year-end message.
One kind of silly way I have confronted my perfectionism problem is to go deep on pandemic self-barbering. Of course I usually look at the results a couple days later, think 'hmmm... not quite right' go in for an adjustment, and mess it up even worse.

Imperfections are part of the display of life. Joy and sorrow, birth and death are the dance of existence throughout which our awakened consciousness can shine. Yet we long for perfection. The perfect partner, house, job, boss, and spiritual teacher. And when we find them, we want them to stay that way forever, never to lose the glow, never to grow old, never to have the roof sag, the paint peeling. We’re also taught to seek perfection in ourselves. Novelist Florida Scott Maxwell writes, “No matter how old a mother is, she looks at her middle-age children for signs of improvement.” You are told that if you do enough therapy, work out at the gym, eat an especially healthy diet, watch documentaries on TV, manage your cholesterol, and meditate enough, you will become more perfect. - Jack Kornfield

Step 1: Re-examine the problem and user research. Do you understand why you are making it?

Step 3: Develop a low fi wire to capture the checklist. Also, make small annotations on your wire to explain your reasoning.

Chris, really great topic! But I felt like I haven’t received and answer.
I have an issue with spending more time than I planned on perfecting 1 piece of work whereas I could just accept the level of perfect and use this time to start the next piece.
I just always feel like I could do more research, I could change the colours of presentation again etc etc. And I think the problem is because there are so many options available to us, it makes me confused eventually. The first perfectionism I call *attention to detail*
It's important to be in a profession where that is encouraged.
I.e My mom works in IT. She is called crazy for caring about the smaller things. But in a design agency, she'd be called a good creative.
(Not sure what the point of that story was but you might take something from it.)

    • @miguel213
      @miguel213 3 ปีที่แล้ว

It's also worth noting that being perceived as crazy for caring about the smaller things can still happen in a design agency setting (due to time and budget constraints). The bottom line matters in this setting just as much as in any other business. Perfectionists should benefit from implementing the 80/20 rule, where 80% of results come from 20% of efforts.

The hardest part is believing it is possible and being able to make progress. Do you have any videos on how to have confidence in yourself? Even after a decade of being in a profession, I still don't feel worthy of anything better than my current situation. Sometimes I don't even feel worthy of my current job.

You're speaking my language Vleker, i can produce good beats but i just cant mix for the lif of me i dont even enjoy it . ill find myself trying to mix for 8 hours every day it will sound good today then the following week when i listen to it again, it will just sound crappy . Solution : i Just outsource both mixing and mastering and i stick to making beat atleast i can keep my royalties on that as a producer . so i'll suggest to find audio engineer online that u trust. that way u can save time and labour which u ca never gain back ever but u can make money at anytime . Learnt that from Chris. Is like using SWAT analysis technique to approach this things.

@@christset I think a lot of musician suffer from this. I have it especially when tracking vocals or guitars. If you don't like mixing then don't do it as you say. But a tip, don't mix for 8 hours. Maybe try for an hour and take a break. Your ears get tired quickly and after a few hours everything will sound different so when you come back to it with clean ears you'll question everything you've done. It can be fun, but it takes a lot of time to learn and you have to do it quickly. If I had the money to outsource it I would, but I'm saving up to outsource mastering for my first EP! Hopefully I can outsource mixing later on :)

@@MrVleker Very true, i tried all that but i realised that i dont enjoy it, so i found away to outsource it to a proffesional instead . i just hate mixing it's like i know what i want to hear. but just cant finalise my mxing . Perhaps ill try some classes online if time permits me though . So far, i understand the basic principle of mixing u like panning and starting with clean instrumentation to bring about clarity when mixeing . but my problems are not understanding what all these plugings does and not knowing when to stop mixing . i'm like mr perfection like Dr dre lol so i had to give up mixing my self for now . cos thats all i need to start selling beats online but i just couldnt mix so i gave up that dream. for now i just do my own music and send them to the enginer to mix and master meanwhile, i know how build beat store website for producers but mixing thing killed y dream . i'm goig to learn it later when i have the time am i have to study music theory first . cos every thing i did was self thought.

@@christset I mean, if you don't like it then don't do it. If you know the basics and if you can explain what you want to your mixer then it's all fine. I totally get it and mixing is also not my favorite thing. I get caught up in it during production and I know it can always be better, although music will never be perfect. It's a fine line. Especially when doing it all yourself it's easy to get caught up in jt

Perfectionism IS CRITICAL ... in My field. Which is computer programming. A single mis-spelling, or comma, out of place, can produce failure. The program may "crash". Or, worse, produce incorrect output data. That goes un-noticed.

  • @joshuapunkt9533

Perfectionism is an unrealistic goal. You should always strife to give your best but let's be honest. It's all an huge process with every step being a new experience you make. Perfectionism looks like it's the end of the road when there actually isn't one. What's perfect to you is also quite debatable to other people.

So, look around your house from what you're wearing, your computer , and ask yourself , what problems are they solving for u, when u bought them devices example your phone, your computer table , your socks, spoon in the kitchen, your toilet seat all that lol . Hope these help . if they work remember to cutyour boy a cheque Yunus lol just kidding.
