The Fall of Inversions

  • When talking about coasters most people talk almost exclusively about airtime. However, that's not how it's always been. Inversions used to be all the craze. When they were first introduced they were everywhere and everyone loved them. But slowly as time went on people enjoyed them less and less so today I talk about the fall from grace of inversions.

    Smiler does that "inversions are the main focus" so well because those inversions were all still fairly new when it debuted, and even now they all still feel very different from other versions of them and are fitted together in the layout creatively and they sprinkle airtime highlights in instead to change it up. I've never ridden it but I'm sure many love it for a reason lol

    • @coasteraddict10
      @coasteraddict10 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Smiler relies on rolls/corkscrews a bit too much imo, would have been a better ride if the two rolls at the top of the hill were just standard drops that gave some ejector. Not that the restraints would be any good for it, but that's a different story. The batwing, sea serpent roll and back to back dive loops are great (the cobra kinda sucks the transitions aren't great) and it's nice that the rolls are all split apart so don't get monotonous, but 6 of the inversions basically being the same thing is too much.

    • @dominicjannazo7144
      @dominicjannazo7144 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Having ridden Smiler, after seven or eight flips you don't get much out of doing more. The second half doesn't feel any different from the first, and while I don't hate it, I wouldn't go out of my way to do it again. (Which is fine because I don't live in England)
      Compare it to the intamin 10-inversion models that showcase different things in different parts of the ride. The Smiler ends up feeling like a bunch of the same thing over and over.

    Just starting the video but immediately I'm struck by the way we as enthusiasts so often forget the way children and teens view coasters. Do you remember the first time you experienced an inversion? It was absolute magic. We need them. They bring kids and casuals into the fold. They capture the imagination in a way "air time hills" never could.

      I’m currently 14 and never got a thrill of inversions, didn’t care when I did my “first inversion” since i didn’t get any thrill out of it. But first airtime hill was unforgettable. The adrenaline was insane, and it was a true magic. I only really get a thrill of slow inversions especially stuff like jojo rolls and stalls. Maybe when I’m older I won’t be able to bare airtime and will settle to inversions, as I find them less intense and just something to smile about on

  • @rodolfomiranda2676
    @rodolfomiranda2676 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    I Actually think that from a GP point of view, an inversion meant the roller coaster is intense just because it goes upside down, and when Arrow and B&M made the loopers, they normalized inversions to the point where they are seen as kind of mediocre by enthusiasts, and thats why all these new inversions such as a stall are so appealing now. At least thats what i think.

    • @cynicanal111
      @cynicanal111 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think a big part of it is also the nature of inversions. B&M had these perfectly engineered inversions that are a lot less exciting than the oldschool almost-round Schwarzkopf loops where you really feel a difference in Gs as you go around.

    • @viddork
      @viddork 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cynicanal111 More years ago than I care to admit, when I was still pretty new to coasters, I went on Montezooma's Revenge something like a dozen times in one day (the park was virtually empty). It was my first time on a shuttle loop, and it took me half those times to successfully hold my arms up going into the loop. You had to deliberately push back as you started to rise because there was so much momentum pushing you forward. If I recall (and this seems impossible but I swear it's how I remember it), there were no shoulder restraints, so your whole upper body pitched forward! Now _that's_ an inversion!

    I'd argue Intamin started the "sprinkle inversions in as seasoning" thing on the Blitz model (starting with Maverick in 2007). None of the Intamin Blitz coasters feel like inversions are the focus, they just kinda have them when/where it makes more sense for the layout to have them rather than a non-inverting element. Though Alan Schilke was messing with the same idea back at S&S with the El Loco models around the same time (announced at IAAPA before Maverick I believe, but the first installation was Steel Hawg at Indiana Beach in 2008). It seems like it's mostly a matter of a few layout designers really trying to make the best possible ride experience without being put in a box regarding the elements used.
    Even Steel Curtain - a very inversion focused ride - has several moments of airtime sprinkled in and it feels like the inversions were a way to keep the ride as vertical as possible - allowing a 4000ft long hyper coaster to fit less in a similar or less space than a Batman: The Ride clone.

    • @Coastoons
      @Coastoons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, I think Intamin was the one that started the trend but RMC really leaned into it. I don't really credit them though for doing it bc they also had those like 10 inversions models that went everywhere. Those were kinda like the B&M loopers.

    The ride that introduced me to inversions was The Loch Ness Monster at BGW, one of Arrow's greatest loopers--but Loch Ness isn't just about inversions. It's got only two, and they're some of the most photogenic inversions ever built; but it's also got long drops into a beautiful river valley and a freakish giant tunnel helix. And since the inversions are vertical loops with simple hills in and out of them, there are none of the bad transitions that Arrow was known for. It's a superb use of inversions, and there didn't need to be very many.

  • @liam-wg3gf

    For me I don’t really get a thrill out the average inversion, but what you said about the forces they give, is what I care about. I just like negative forces, and that’s what my type is. It can be a speedy hill that flys you upward, or a jarring slow inversion where I’m hanging. The out of the seat sensations is what made me love coasters. Roller coasters are meant to be fun and if we all have our type and can enjoy them it’s all amazing. And respect the other types for the other people who enjoy them.:) I also don’t mind a ride without that many negative forces and can find joy instead in bringging a friend and having a bond experience

      I think designers know which ones are the best and stick with those. Zero G Rolls, Zero G Stalls, inline twists, heartline rolls, etc now seem to be the best ones because they give a variety of forces like airtime and hangtime with laterals as well.

    I started my journey with coasters during the birth of inversions. I'm old enough to say that I rode The Python at BGT a week after it opened(I was 6 to be exact), and it terrified me to where I never wanted to get on another coaster again. But then I rode Space Mountain and BTMR and found out that coasters had more to offer than inversions. A few years later and The Scorpion opened at BGT and the vertical loop became the coolest thing I had ever experienced. For the longest time inversions were it for me, but now I appreciate a good balance between airtime and inversions. This is why i'm so hyped for Iron Gwazi. It looks like it will be a great airtime machine, but also throw in some interesting inversions like the zero g stall and the death spiral(and that insanely overbanked turn is pretty much close to a inversion as well).

Parks now all want to have B&M Dives, Hypers and Flyers, but I would really look to see more unique loopers and inverts. Granted, I'm biased because I've only been to a handful of parks outside of Florida, but Kumba, Montu, Hulk and Kraken are all really solid here and I would like to see more. I think you also make a good point in saying that clones have played a bit part in the inversion fatigue.

Enthusiasts love to talk about air time but GP will always talk about the inversions first in my experience. A good example is Goliath at SFGAm. 8:18 What I like is variety. Inversions, airtime, etc. Purely inversion or airtime focussed rides can still be great, but a variety of elements makes the best kind of rides. This is one of the reasons I like Lost Gravity more than Untamed, Untamed is just short airtime pop after short airtime pop with some rolls but Lost Gravity has floater, ejector whip, hangtime, etc etc.

    @ukthemeparksquad4514 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Neat video and I agree with the overall sentiment that it’s the over-saturation of an element that makes it lose the appeal.
    That being said I do fundamentally disagree that B&Ms inversions are forgettable when you hear most enthusiasts including myself rave about the crazy whip and positive gs of “old school B&M”. Not to mention one of these B&Ms ended up creating the best inversion of all time, Montu’s batwing.
    Still overall a solid video!

    Great video! I'm only a bit over 1 year into being a coaster enthusiast, but it's been interesting to see how my tastes have changed and evolved just in that short amount of time. At the start, I was ALL ABOUT inversions. After riding my first B&M hyper a couple of weeks ago (Mako), I've gotta say that I'm pretty into airtime, right now. XD But I think combining the two is definitely a winning combination, as we've seen in many RMC coasters.

  • @HiAnonym
    @HiAnonym 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Like Werner Stengel once said: You don't have to just throw extreme element after extreme element towards the rider, you need sections which are very extreme and intense like ejector or an inversion but then you also need sections in which the rider can calm down a little and realize what just happened before...but these calm sections shouldn't be so that you fall asleep so it's a very tricky task to get a layout right
    I'd say he ment that the real art of rollercoaster design is not to get extreme intensity or pacing but to get the sequencing of elements during the ride right.

  • @VestedUTuber
    @VestedUTuber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I definitely have to agree from a designer's point of view. Whenever I play Planet Coaster, the coasters I end up building inevitably are based on an existing model with a custom layout based on that model because there's just something in my mind that prevents me from using a coaster model unprototypically. Thing is, when I build any sort of B&M coaster with inversions I feel like I'm just stringing stock elements from the "Loops" and "Rolls" menus together, whereas when I'm building, say, an RMC I-Box Hybrid, Gerstlauer Eurofighter or Infinity, or S&S El Loco, I'm almost exclusively using freeform track and having everything flow together, and the ride just ends up better that way both in the POV and stats-wise. I also have an easier time deciding how to build the ride with the latter models.

    My thing is this: I love coasters that do the job that they were designed to to.
    You need a coaster with fast low to the ground sense of speed and intensity, you need an airtime machine, and you gotta have the inversion machines. I do wish there were more stand out looping coasters though. Cause the standouts are hypers, Gigas, and RMCs. Which is why I kinda like Kennywood’s, Magic Mountain, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, standouts for being varied.

    I think what makes airtime so addictive is that it's the closest approximation of flying. Your body is rising up toward the sky as though you were taking flight. There are lots of activities where you can turn yourself upside down or where you fall to the earth, but the feeling of negative Gs actually pushing you upward is almost entirely unique to coasters.

    OK you found the way to put how I feel about coasters currently that I have never been able to figure out before. this is exactly it and not just for inversions but any element really. Manufacturers need to stop putting stuff in a ride as filler. They need to put elements in a ride for a reason and give them a real purpose. I haven't ridden hardly any rides compared to most enthusiasts but the ones that I have ridden and actually stood out don't have elements that are put in for filler especially inversions.

    Last monts as a rookie in this intusiast rollercoaster world I've been learning a loot with this type o content! But the most idiot is that I'm from Brazil and never had the oportunitty to travel for some great park like six flags or cedar point... I mean, is funny because the unic rollercoaster that I ride was the Firewhip here in Brazil (is a classic vekoma inverted, that model who have something like 40 identical models! So, sometimes is difficult for me to understand why hyper coasters or giga coaster sometimes doesn't have any invertion or loop! haha, Probably one day when i finally ride a lot of coasters in a travel for U.S. parks I'll finally understand what's the motivation behind every project!

    Great video! I've been saying this for a while. Roller coasters are at they're best when they can provide a variety of forces. Even if there is a coaster who's main focus is airtime, I feel like there should be some positive forces sprinkled in just to shake things up a little. The same can be said when talking about looping coasters. If you're gonna focus on inversions, why not throw some airtime in there. I think Fahrenheit is a good example of this.

  • @MrPopsfreshnmyer
    @MrPopsfreshnmyer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree with you about B&M. They replaced (and put out of business) Arrow because they stopped innovating. B&M turned into the go-to for sit down multi-loopers but frequently relied on doing subtle changes to the Kumba layout. RMC brought new inversions to market and they blew up. Now look at the inversions Intamin and Vekoma are putting in. Stalls are all the rage. I like that S&S is trying to come up with new inversions, it'll be wild to see what they do with their Axis concept.

    I got so lucky with Inversions at my home park BGT Montu having that iconic batwing and I think the original Immelmann that comes out of that trench to greet guests coming into the area giving the illusion you’ll smack into the tomb wall and with Kumba having that mega loop over the lift hill and the interlocking corkscrews . But as you said a line up like this makes someone crave airtime my first time on Goliath over GA I marathoned it 10 times on a family trip because we simply didn’t have airtime like that in Florida. Then I did the same thing when Mako was built . I think with the evolution of more comfortable restraints like Copperhead Strike , Maxx Force inversions will make a comeback

    This is the smartest thing I've ever heard! When I was just becoming a thoosie, I just liked coasters in general, but didn't know much about them. I had never heard the term "airtime" at that time, so I thought inversions were everything. My first inverting coaster was Superman: Ultimate Flight @ SFGAdv, and DAMN that left an impression. Then, I started actually researching coasters and learning more, and learned about forces. That's when I started loving airtime.
    also, the vertical loop on boomerangs are pretty dang forceful, some of the best loops out there, frankly. The cobra roll can be really good if it's smooth.
