5:40 Deku learned a majority of these problems when he became a vigilante. He was exposed to the cesspool that is society, especially when he meets Lady Nagant. Even after learning of the flaws of his society he decided to keep helping people and to change the world for the better, even admitted to Lady Nagant that the world is shades of grey rather than being black and white.

I do disagree on the dark side part.
Depression, self harm and recklessness are a staple of Deku.
He broke himself finger by finger to help with todorokis trauma.
His opinion of himself is always beneath those he protects.
Always fun with getting hurt while refusing others help because they would be in pain
Also... have you read the story?
Bruh, he is literally the only one wanting to save shigaraki.
He does not see them as just obstacles, he sees them as people. That they may not be able to saved mind you (because they are an apocalypse in a boy´s body, how do you even imprison one?) but he WANTS to save him.

I see the dark side parts point. He did have a dark side that was just shoved down so deep that it pretty much disappeared. He would probably circum to it if it wasn't for the Allmight giving him his quirk. If Allmight didn't do that and he didn't make it into ua he could have boiled over. Most people that do that to their dark side usually have to hit rock bottom in order to release that side of themselves. Deku never truly hit his lowest because, he got a quirk, made it to ua and made friends to keep him up. The depression, self harm, and recklessness aren't just from his dark half but, what he was taught by those around him and are a sorta outlet that let's him keep himself from just saying f it. While I think he wouldn't be a villain he will probably tap into that side of him to win against the villains. He currently is trying to save them but only a handful of them are savable. He needs that darker part of himself to end the notion of saving them. At this point they don't need to be saved they just need to be stopped.

    Spoiler for manga
As much as I like this, Deku's dark side is explored in that villain hunt arc. His dark side is exactly the fact that he has fallen for what he considers to be the heroic ideal to such an extent that he will willingly destroy himself and push others away.
I think the drive to live up to expectations being destructive to yourself and others is a good dark side, but I don't think Deku embodies it the best of the MHA cast.

I definitely agree that Deku started out as completely falling for the hero propaganda he grew up with, but I have seen the amount of growth and development he went through as the anime progressed. He, like Shigaraki, adapted and evolved to see the nuance in everything around him. Is his goal of saving Shigaraki rather than killing him short sighted and naïve? Sure, he most like feels obligated to at least try for Nana Shimura.
It's nice to find another psychology-themed TH-cam channel that talks about things like this. I especially loved your discussion about Carl Jung's shadow, and how everyone has a mixture of light and dark. I honestly think it'll be easier to say I agree with a lot of what you said, and leave it at that.

This is a Deku problem only, this is the hero and human society problem. Thinking that someone has to be pure to decide who lives, who dies, goes to jail is inequality in it of itself. This is what Shigaraki pointed out in his speech. I'm not saying you should let villains on the loose, but someone who grew up like Shigaraki and then Deku is bound to be on 2 different sides of the coin. Shigaraki is the opposite and mindset-wise is farther ahead than Deku as in that he knows himself. I love this anime!

I think you have several things wrong. Like a lot even for an anime only. But seeing as you’re anime only, I think your only seeing deku from his very beginning. He develops much more and enters into his darker side later on. He doesn’t see villians as obstacles, instead he’s one of the few that are trying to understand them. He might be led in the beginning in this puppet/black and white fashion, but even in the later season we see a shift in his thinking (the fight with the gentle hero for instance). There’s a lot more, in fact I could write on and on about it, but I would like to see more about what you think later on in the anime.

Not quite right, but you do understand a lot of his character! Deku is a pure boy, a person who desires to do good both because he knows it's what's correct and because he just thinks is so damn cool, but his dark side has been stated that in other circumstances could have ended on him becoming like villains we have seen like Gentle in a more realistic case and Shigaraki in a worst case scenario, but in between we can see characters like Lady Nagant who are people who followed the Hero Society propaganda until they finally snapped after being abused for years by it...
Deku currently is aware of the imperfections of the Hero Society, but before, he was TERRIFYINGLY ready to smash Shigaraki's skull to dust, which is something he is still able to do, but sith the catch of him now trying to understand and save him. Deku thought that being the best hero of all would be just imitating All Might, but now he is carving his own path, as with his life he FELT inequality in his own flesh and overall, more than anything he is empathetic, which will make him rise up from the darkness that has consumed so many on his world.

The thing is with these kinds of analysis there isn’t a right way to contribute the idea without showing the author’s own experience. For example in this video his impression on deku is heavily depicted on what he’s seen in real life and how people in similar situations ended up, when in reality deku isn’t just a boring plain hero you see on the Internet his character has layers and layers of complex thoughts. What I’m saying is there’s more to him that your depicting, but great analysis!

Anyone has potential to choose to be “evil”, and most of those choices come from bitterness and resentment. As far as Deku, he’d have to be this way or think he’s the only one capable of getting things done. An example of good and bad of a personality type like Dekus is John snow and Khaleesi from game of thrones.

I think the initial set up in my Hero in the first season is pretty black and white. Heroes are good villains are evil. Are there potential pitfalls of being a hero actually being a job paid for by the government? Hell yes there are because you’ve got people potentially being a hero for all the wrong reasons. For fame and money rather than actually being in it to help people. You actually see glimpses of that flaw in the very first episode although it isn’t explored massively until later. For Izuku being a hero like All Might is something he’s dreamed of his whole life. He admires them with every fibre of his being and studies them intensely especially All Might. Yes particularly initially to him heroes are good and villains are bad. Based on his own experiences in the first season you can see why he’d think that way. Although I would point out that despite that one of the first things you see him do is save someone who arguably acts more like a villain than a hero especially with how he behaves towards Izuku. Bakugo. Now don’t get the wrong idea Bakugo is one of if not my favourite character I love his character development. But there’s no arguing that regardless of the reasons he’s kind of an abusive ass at the start of the series despite wanting to be a hero.
He is especially initially an example of a shade of grey that Izuku is exposed to. Under this videos argument Izuku is just blindly saving people because that’s just what he thinks a hero should do right? Well when he arrives to the scene where Bakugo has been captured by the sludge villain he arrives to find the heroes doing anything but actually saving a person in front of them that desperately needs help. They are helping other people but not the one boy that is in imminent danger of actually dying. He’s the only one that steps forward. Even All Might isn’t taking any action at this point. Later in the series as he speaks to more hero’s like Endeavour and kids like Kota who hates heroes and more villains like Shigaraki, Gentle Criminal, Stain and Dabi he is exposed to more and more shades of grey. He learns that villains are villains for a reason and a lot of it is to do with the current society ignoring or rejecting some people that need help. He also learns that not all heroes are entirely good either. He reasons with Gentle Criminal later, even identifies with him and says that he’ll save Shigaraki. There are whole episodes of him trying to empathise with villains it’s a big thing in the more recent arcs. If he was the person you seem to be indicating he is in this video then he wouldn’t be empathising at all just calling them evil then washing his hands of them. You’ve obviously not seen some of the more recent content as this was a few months ago now but even then I have to question if you’ve really been fully paying attention to this character and how he’s changed as a person over time.

this is gonna be long, sorry, but TL;DR, deku is LITERALLY me, our personality is so similar, its scary
i've never seen a very similar character in any franchise as me until i saw deku. i am aware that i've always been so naive, seeing the world in only black and white, and- if deku wants to be a hero, then for me its always strive to be "good" in a textbook way and perhaps similar to him- i wanna help as many people as i can on literally ANYTHING, or at least i try very hard to do so. why? i just genuinely love to make people happy, and wanna help people for the sake of them, and perhaps... deep down i know i want to be somewhat 'perfect', just like how deku wants to be allmight. and... because of that, i've been repressing my bad emotions, feelings, be a people-pleaser, or perhaps keeping my problems to myself not wanting to be a burden to my loved ones, always being serious and stiff about laws, and see everything in black and white, and bad at setting boundaries in context of when people ask for my help, and also punishes myself if i make a single sin towards someone and make them feel bad. sometimes i pushed myself too hard just to help people and make them pleased. sure because of that, many people like friends and families are really thinking of me as somewhat so kind and rightious, and thankful. i also have a LOT of friends bcs of my 'good' traits. and theyare all loyal to me too, i'm grateful for that. until i'm finally in my middle college years, i realized that i've been somewhat deluded by my own ideas and belief of being "perfectly good" without knowing how to draw the line so it wouldn't hurt myself, forcing myself to help people be it mentally, or physically. now i'm 22 on my last year of college, i learnt so much about myself that i've been hurting myself (i often feel like i have no personal space as i keep saying yes if others need help. i feel tense, stressed, some days i even feel ingenuine when i help people and that 's just bad) i feel like a puppet to my own textbook "good" belief. the ideas of "perfection" that i've been chasing, while in reality, theres no such this as a perfect human being.
and goddamn if that aint deku
    another scary similarities,
my MBTI personality type is INFJ, and so is deku.
deku looks up to All Might SO MUCH, he's like a father figure and All Might is ENFJ
i look up to my dad SO MUCH, and my dad is also ENFJ. i swear, I SWEAR i'm not making shit up, i too was shocked when i see deku and all might's relationship is like, is very much like me and my dad, and the way my dad is also a person that hides the pain and all smiley on the front to assure his loved ones that everything is fine is so all might. but perhaps my dad have had his fair share of ups and downs, while im here just copying him like how deku is to all might hahaha.

Yet Deku jumped into action against a villain he knew he couldn't beat. I had some very similar thoughts on the anime. Especially with Overhaul, who wanted to get rid of quirks and bring equality. While Overhaul was fighting Deku to get Eri, Deku was simply thinking of saving Eri from a black-and-white perspective. I felt that Deku's reasoning was very immature and that Overhaul had a fair point. However, you have to take into account that Overhaul was researching in an ethically wrong manner. Thus, allowing him to be categorized, with Stain, in the "grey area".
This anime is just non-fictional history repeating itself in a fictional world.

    • @aluralovell6829
      @aluralovell6829 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I'm sorry maybe I remember it wrong but despite Overhaul claiming that quirks were a disease wasn't his goal actually to bring the Yakuza back into power by selling to both sides? Selling the quirk erasing bullets to the villains and the cure to the heroes? It's been a minute but while I do remember him making a comment about inequality in a quirk based society I ever actually remember that being his goal only to pay back his boss who he effectively put into a coma because he wouldn't allow him to torture and let's be honest straight up murder a child multiple times.
I never really saw this as Izuku being immature as Izuku has been shown to understand the points villains have made. However, it is literally his job to save people and Overhaul's own logic was very flawed. Not simply because of his methods but in general. Inequality existed long before quirks so even if his goal was to create equality by getting rid of quirks which I don't think it was, it wouldn't fix the problem and literally in the end Overhaul was only doing it so that the Yakuza could be on top by having an advantage. He wasn't interested in an equal playing field, it just kind of screamed season 1 Shigaraki vibes to me when All Might called him out for being full of it. It's not that Shigaraki didn't have a point it's that All Might could see he didn't really care about that and I see this as the same with Overhaul, what he said may have had some truth to it but he clearly didn't care about that as much as he lead on.
In the end, what else was Izuku supposed to think about in that moment? If you see a man torturing a child, should you under any circumstances entertain his reasoning for it? In that moment? No but you can have plenty of time to think on it later and move from there.

Overhaul tortured a little girl he’s far from in the “grey” area lol you’re making it seem like Deku should’ve heard Overhaul out and let him continue to torture a little girl for the greater good 😂 like what

I tink your point about our dear friend the austrian painter is I think very ideological and not logical. Of course for people with "stronger" quirks it should be way easier to be heroes. The should be logical. We select people for jobs in the real world by a large part on genetic makeup like doctors are mostly pretty smart people and i know intelligence is also determent by your upbringing but you know. We shouldn't just let anybody be a doctor because they wanted to. If being a doctor is not within in your capabilities then though luck. You could bring others in danger by doing something you're not qualified to do. And dismissing or discrediting an opinion just because somebody you don't like or agree with also thinks its a good idea and using that fact as an argument is just very weird. and for the record I don't agree with Hitler but to use him thinking something as a reason for something being wrong is just weird. It's like i say i think x is wrong because trump thinks it's a good idea, like what.

The Religious comparison I really hated, number one mostly because most people don’t understand how Christians think, most people I met think Christian’s are always extreme or take the things we say to the most extreme and literal sense, just because we don’t believe in evolution which is a scientifically theory doesn’t mean we’re blind to science, using that type of example is a low blow and terrible analogy and really had no place in the video there’s so many different things you could’ve used, like media manipulation (which would’ve correlated to MHA and how Deku was a hundred percents effected by it, you talked about it but briefly you didn’t really elaborate much on it) but other than that I genuinely enjoyed the video and a lot of the points you brought up were valid, Izuku is naive and bland compared to every other potential main character, like Uraraka wants to help her parents with money, Iida wants to be like his brother, Bakugo even though he is similar to Deku in his dream, he was always told he would become a great hero, that he would do great things that’s a big burden on a child, Todoroki also had the same burden as Bakugo but much much much more amplified, Mineta although he’s a gag chr and a terrible human being, he’s short and not very attractive so he wants to become a hero to get girls even though it’s shallow it’s something, Deku he just wants to be a Hero because that’s what TV taught him he WANTS to become pure good following the medias teachings naively. anyways other than that great video hopin to look for more

Nice jab with the political and religious propaganda, but failed in that comparison.
Hero Academia is showing the complexity of powers and power is ever-flowing and ever-changing. Power doesn't care about morality, more power is all consuming. Deku probably will not become a villain because of the friends and family that he has created himself. Corruption is a tool that uses to gain power through isolation, power scales can be formed in communities; both are strategic. Sacrifice tends to do one or two things, you ask questions of the person's life who sacrifice their life for another. Deku was not alienated, but challenged throughout his journey to be a hero. Deku discovers that to be a great hero, you can't do it without sacrifice. Sacrifice of one's ego, theories, and life became the great teacher. Just when you think you know it all, you don't. You stop growing because people are unwilling to sacrifice ideas that go unchallenged. Conditioning is still sacrificing their bodies, the ideology of morals, and theories on who/what they want to be.
We are ignoring is that society's practices that make villains and heroes every day. But there are exceptions to outside stimulates and environmental pressures, personal decisions that can crush or liberate the human soul. Deku could have made the decision for villainy a long time ago. Rivalries can create a brotherhood, and sacrifice tends to fuse together bonds that are unbreakable. Painful sacrifice without context leads to manipulation and the creation of villains. Most villains were never given tools to resolve their tragedies or a quiet place to reflect and ask hard questions without manipulation.
Deku was naive to want to be like All Might. After Deku spent time with All Might and got the behind-the-scenes of what this great hero suffers through. He did not turn back, he learn and adapted to the idea of sacrificing - from small to large amounts of sacrifice.
Instant gratifications lead to a lack of appreciation.
But if Deku's friends and family abandon him, then he will lead from desperation, despair, hatred, anger, and then be supported by outcasts.
Last... the people have never been the reflection of corrupted governments, atrocities has and have happened in all countries too. The problem is when we choose not to be better towards our fellow human beings.
