I still have the impression that the series as a whole is a bit more mid than good, but you did a pretty good job of getting me to appreciate certain aspects more than I did before. One thing that I still think the first part struggles from is how hard they leaned into Bakugo’s antagonism. I get the insecurity angle that drives him to lash out, but the extent to which he lashes out really calls into question whether or not he deserves “redemption”. In the video you said that the Final Exams arc was Bakugo at his lowest, and yeah he was an absolute piece of shit there, but I think his worst moment was his first hero training class against Deku. Bakugo shot a giant explosion at Deku, despite All Might ordering him not to on the basis that it would kill Deku, and despite the possibility killing or severely injuring Deku Bakugo shows no sign of introspection or reflection to indicate that he’s remotely regretful for taking such a risk just to boost his ego. It’s bad enough that it takes hundreds of chapters for Bakugo to bother apologizing to Deku, but for him to not even feel bad subconsciously for nearly killing somebody he knew since childhood really puts Bakugo’s characterization in a bad light.
Good work, but I think that constantly referring vaguely to "shonen tropes" and how MHA subverts them (you can probably find some shonen tropes that one moment subverts, but also some tropes that that same moment probably plays into), the review of a work should be mostly self-contained. Why is a moment satisfying within the narrative? Is it only in context of the larger shonen landscape that it "subverts"? Or can it stand on its own, and provide intriguing moments that are intriguing because of what has been set up within the narrative? I think MHA can stand on its own just fine.

@@djantouahmed7319 ya but being a hero in mha is just a normal job so in mha batman would fit into society very differently. would be nice to see the mha world from the quirk less perspective i still have no idea if deku being bullied for being quirkless is common? even if deku was chosen to get powers would be better if it was because he could be effective without powers would of felt like he actually prepared to be a hero. I think a quirkless villain could be really awesome would of been better if deku could of been the quirkless hero fighting a quirkless villain stain would of been even more intimidating if he took down heroes without powers
I remember how people said MHA make them remember of Nature.
But Damn, the path is the same, specially when you rewatch with actual standars you see how the early vood writing just derange into massive battles and hyper power scaling.
Not to mention the retcon with Shipuden and all. Trully, a predecesor worth of the Naruto name.
Also, first Naruto themes where "underdogs" and "Privileged"
Remember Neji and my boy ROCK LEE!
This was a pretty nice retrospective and a nice way to recap anime-onlys like myself to catch up on the series. Act 1 was my middle school childhood right here. 🥹
