6,000+ MILES In My Home Built Ramp Truck! 1992 Dodge D350 Cummins And 1971 Dodge Demon Cross America

  • Who does this? Who pulls a beat up old Dodge truck out of a field, home builds a ramp bed for it and fixes "everything" wrong with it in three weeks, parks their priceless two owner Demon 340 on the bed, and tows it 6,000 miles across America to lose a drag race? Nobody. And that's probably a good thing, to be honest. It's definitely one of those don't-try-this-at-home type situations.
    But today, that's exactly what I'm doing. I've got a 1992 Dodge D350 with a Cummins under the hood, a classic Mopar A-body drag racer on the back, a small collection of spare parts, a backpack full of socks and T-shirts, a credit card to swipe at every fuel station from here to Tennessee, and some big dreams. It's the great ice cream cake drag race road trip! It's "Prudence's Big Adventure!" It's "Turning Left Across America!" It's the 1970s drag racing scene all over again. It's the kind of crazy crap I've been dreaming about for a decade. So let's hit the road and see what breaks. I mean, really, what's the worst that could happen?
    Oh yeah - and look for this insanity on the cover of an upcoming issue of Mopar Collector's Guide! ‪@moparcollectorsguidesmoprt5315‬

Build a ramp truck, drive 6000 plus miles in a Dodge Flintstonemobile, visit various events, pickup slicks and skinnys, break a drag car, do mechanic jobs along the highway and still made time to visit your Grandma .. and.. at the same time videoing the whole odyssey ! Saw it last October on our way home from the annular eclipse, and again earlier this year on the way to Plymouth. I'd met and known Rex since the late 1960s when he raced drag boats against a family friend in the Bay Area (Alamada CA). Rex passed away about 8 years ago. His son Glenn is running the show now.

    I attended a 'Saint Vitus' concert around 2012 or 2013. I had seen Scott 'Wino' Weinrich in Seaside CA for the opening night of the US tour with Conny Ochs. My son was like 13 and after talking with Scott I had gotten a photo of him with my son. So, a month+ later, he was playing in Sacramento with 'Saint Vitus'. I went down with some 8x12 of that photo to get autographed. We probably talked for like an hour+. He mostly wanted to talk about my son, as my son was taking guitar, bass, and harmonica lessons. Anyhow, I thought I was deaf in my left ear as it took three days for the pain to clear after that concert. My earplug had fallen out and I was standing in front of the Marshal stack.

      Ugh. Been there, done that - a few times. Are you pulling the cab or do you know the tricks? Haha. I never had a lift so I would always pull the fender plastics, vacuum reservoir and part of the heater box. Makes room for right side head bolts. My other truck was to use zip ties to hang those back ones in the heads/aluminum chunks as I installed them. This usually also involved a small dent on the driver side firewall. It can be done but it sucks

    I'm very impressed with the old Dodge truck. I was sure this was going to be a movie about how many part stores it was going to take for your trip.
    My old 1990 diesel Dodge was very good on fuel when I wasn't towing something heavy and it had a flat deck with cabinets and tools for oil patch work so it was heavy all of the time but it was horrible on long drives because of no cruise and it pulled to the right.
    To bad the Demon had a major break down at the track. Keep up the good work 💪

    35:52 Aww you missed the obligatory triple horn tap!! Also you barely missed the frog season going across nebarska. The last time I went through in June it was dark, drizzling off and on, and hot. This brought out hundreds of thousands of frogs from the ponds and whatnot on the sides of the road to come eat bugs going after headlights. Do know what happens when you mix that with a 12" section width tire at 80 mph? Popcorn! Or maybe miles of bubble wrap being squished at the same time. Either way my tank green wrangler was a dark brown when we got to our destination.

    For coolant leaks, the ABSOLUTE BEST I have found for stopping the leak is going to sound crazy, but it is regular EVAPORATED MILK from the grocery store. It works amazing and is cheaper than the ones sold as stop leak at parts stores or gas stations. It is the only form of stop leak that is approved for use by John Deere that won't void their warranty and if they accept it for using in equipment that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, I think it can be trusted. I put it in 2 vehicles over 5 years ago and neither of them have leaked since and nothing other than the leaks was plugged by it. One of those leaks was a radiator and the other was a head gasket. Both still run great and haven't lost any coolant.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I haven’t heard that one. That’s brilliant! Yeah, if it’s good enough for John Deere, it’s good enough for this POS. Haha.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage The way to do it is to fill the radiator most of the way with coolant but leave enough room for a couple of cans of regular evaporated milk. Start the car with the radiator cap off and let it idle until you can see the coolant has started to flow as the thermostat has opened. Pour in one can of the evaporated milk and put the radiator cap on. Either let it sit there idling or go for a ride for about 15 -- 20 minutes but watch the temperature. Look for any signs of continued leaking. Turn it off and let it cool and if there is no more leaking just top off the radiator and you are good to go. The person I learned it from did it on his Lincoln V-12 that had a cracked block. 11 years later and it still hadn't lost a drop of coolant when he sold the car. It only sets up where there are leaks and it works fantastic. If you have ever done any cooking with evaporated milk, you know how hard it sets up in the pot around the top of where the liquid was at and it is almost impossible to get that ring out of the pot. Yet it doesn't set up anywhere other than where the leaks are and it can even be painted over on the engines if desired. The regular radiator stop leaks at parts stores can plug the cooling tubes in heater cores and in radiators which you don't want to happen, whereas evaporated milk does not plug anything but the leaks. If you try it, let me know what you think. Personally I would flush that stuff you already poured in the truck out of it before it causes issues, but that's me...lol. Once the milk is in it, theres no reason to flush it until it is time to replace the coolant for normal maintainance, and if you arent one who replaces your coolant per the auto makers recomendations, it dont worry about it. Let me know how it goes

    The TSC boxes are a nice fit - very clean and tidy. My '80 Dodge surfer van had an 11 meter band (CB) radio - an AR3500 with a Francis antenna. The rooftop offered a nice ground plane - the radio did over 140 watts on SSB (measured) and could reach Costa Rica from Malibu, Cal. The 360 alternator had no problems charging RV batteries (Die Hards) on the system.

      I already talked myself into not cab swapping it, brother. But I’m going to back date the nose and doors since all of that is absolute junk anyway. My dream pickup is a 1992 or ‘93 club cab W250 with a Cummins and a five speed with decent paint. I know *exactly* how collectible such a truck is. This one is not that.
